I've read through a lot of really cool builds on this site and I have learned a lot from everyone on here. I figured I would start my own build thread. I'm calling this car "Beast Mode". I edited this from the original posting because a few guys said I was being a bit modest about the build. My intention is to build the best car my salary will allow me to build. The car will be built by my dad and I out of my dad's garage. Here is the car when we started. I bought it from a guy in Georgia in 2011, a decently solid starting point.

Here is the foundation of the car. A Schwartz Performance G Machine Chassis.

*Moser Full Floating 9”
*Baer 6P’s and 14” Rotors Front and Rear
*Aluminum Third Member w/Wavetrac Differential
*Ridetech Triple Adjustables

Shout out to Dale @ Schwartz Performance

Wow, nice parts list there. You were modest in your very first post as if this was gonna be just a simple, low key, run of the mill type of build. After seeing the chassis and all of the carbon fiber, this car is gonna be one bad 69.

Here is the body being test fit on the chassis. We ended up cutting the floor and lowering the body over the chassis just a little bit in order to get the stance a little lower.

I picked up the doors from Auto Metal Direct and they seem to be pretty good quality.

I ordered a grille from Yearone but haven't gotten it at this time...

Paint color has been an incredibly hard choice so I'm still undecided. Engine and Trans I am still debating.

Very cool start to an Awesome project.Would love to see some photo's of how the rear frame section fit up under the car.

Thanks! Here is a photo of the floor cut up. We have way more cutting yet to do. I bought a Miller Plasma Cutter recently and it was well worth the money. The car won't have a back seat so we will have to come up with something for that area.

Typically with this chassis the body fits over it with very minimal cutting, but I wanted to take it a little further even though it would have been great the way it was intended. Normally only a few inches of the rear footbox area has to be sliced for the rail to come through the floor, similar to how you Detroit Speed guys cut out the floor.

We will end up getting rid of the original frame rails because they are really not necessary with the full frame. I just ordered Detroit Speed Deep Tubs which will be installed with some additional new metal work.

Hey Thanks, I figured it wouldn't be nearly as much of a pain as having to clean around each bolt head. Although I feel sort of bad about spending the money for titanium bolts that will never be seen.

As you can see from the photo and the description I went a little overboard, but if I had left the floor the way it was the chassis fit very well between the original frame rails.

If you are considering buying one I would strongly encourage you. The Schwartz's are great people. Get in contact with [email protected], he will get you any information you need.

We recently took the car back apart after doing a rough mock up with the Carbon parts. It's now on the jig so that we have a perfectly square starting point for doing metal work. Quite a bit of metal has been cut out of the car with more yet to go...

Vince@Meanstreets
12-06-2013, 11:25 PM

LS7 Z/28
12-06-2013, 11:34 PM
We recently added a frame extenstion to the back half of the chassis and cut out the trunk floor along with the old frame rails. We made a fuel cell frame/guard that will be removable with four bolts. Later we will make the upper straps for the cell when the new floor is in place. One of the next things we are planning is doing metal work in the trunk area. We will also be starting on the full rollcage soon, along with seat and pedal mock up.

Here are some before and after photos of the fuel cell guard and new chassis back half.

To get it up there we used an Engine Cherry Picker on the backend with a strap running through the taillight openings. One guy guided the cherry picker while my dad and I lifted the front of the car. We will do the same to take it off. I'm tough as nails.

From what I have seen in person the rear could use a 3/4" stretch to match it. But thats just my opinion.

Thanks for asking Skip! Doing lots of metal work on the floor and trunk areas. It's really tedious and slow going but we are getting there. We should be getting a lot done over the next few months. I'm accumulating funds and parts also.

I think the fenders look really good. If you look down the side of a stock '69 the rear is definitely wider than the fenders are. I think Anvil did a fantastic job. No one that has come to look at my car has even noticed the extra width unless I tell them. I tried to get a decent photo but it's quite difficult to get the right angle without seeing it in person. I'm no Sieg...

I can agree Vince, a little bit of width in the rear might make it just right, I'm not doing it though haha.

Quite a few things have changed over the last few months. A lot of the metal work has been completed and I have acquired a lot of important pieces. Here are some of the photos of the metal work. I Made the decision to go with an LS Engine and a Tremec T-56 Magnum so I bought a mock up block and ordered a new transmission with a Quick Time bellhousing so we could work on the firewall and floor. The new floor was fabricated with a raised tunnel, mounts for the seats were fabricated along with that. The firewall has been recessed and completely redone because we pulled the engine back a few inches. I bought Detroit speed deep tubs and we added around 3" to them so now I can fit 17" wide tires in the rear if I ever decided I wanted to. The trunk area was totally redone to accommodate the fuel cell and to get rid of extra weight. The stock rear subframe is gone because it's not needed with the full frame chassis. The full roll cage is in place, and we are currently working on installing the new Dash to fit around the cage.

I decided to have a Naturally aspirated LS7 427 built by Thomson Automotive and my dad and I drove up there to pick it up about a month ago. I didn't trust my truck to make it on a 20 hour round trip so I borrowed my Mom's new Chevy Equinox. The engine just barely fit and she was not very happy about the whole deal but we made it.

The engine ended up at 665 Horsepower and 571 Lb/ft on 93 Octane. It has a Callies Dragon Slayer crank, Oliver Rods, Diamond Pistons, Trend Pushrods, Custom ground Comp Cam, etc... It should be a pretty solid engine.

Some of the parts I've bought: Kirkey Road Race Seats, MOMO Nascar steering wheel, Schroth Nascar harnesses, Joes Racing Carbon X Shifter boot, Fesler Trunk hinges, Wilwood pedals and masters, Borla Mufflers, RAINGEAR hidden wiper kit, Flaming River Steering Column and a few other parts. I have a lot of stuff to buy yet but things are progressing.

Awesome car Casey! I don't remember responding before but notice you mentioned the Australia V8 Super Cars. I work for a performance transaxle company that is the US distributor for the transmissions in those cars. We primarily do transaxles but that unit is very modular for different drivetrain configurations. I'm assuming you were joking about that but if not send me a PM. Keep it up!

First build I've read with the Schwartz chassis. So am very interested in seeing how this will turn out. Have you decided what you'll do with the deleted rear seat area? Curious as that is something I've been considering doing on my build project once I get started. Also curious how it would handle if you did go to the 17" rims. Sounds like a dray car with that width.
Best of luck on completing it the way you want it to be.

A few more things have been done recently with quite a bit more planned for the next couple of months. The engine and transmission have been mocked up, along with all of the steering components. Gussets were added between the firewall down bars and the chassis for added stiffness. The new dash is in place and the Anvil dash insert is mocked up. I bought a Vintage Air Gen II heater and it has been mocked up as well. The Fesler trunk hinges are on and they are very high quality and fit great. I am very happy with how the cockpit turned out. The position of the seats, steering wheel, pedals and shifter are all right where I want them.
Within the next few weeks I'm planning on taking the car to have custom headers made, also one of the next things my dad and I plan on doing is fabricating a rear spoiler and rear diffuser. After a few more things get fabricated I plan on buying a rotisserie so we can finish all the welding on the car and send it to be media blasted. If all goes well it should be painted before winter and assembly will begin. I have a bunch of parts on back-order from Anvil so that is a big factor in the timing of the bodywork and paint.

Rod
Thanks Rod, I plan on having custom carpet made for the floor and rear seat delete area. It probably wouldn't be beneficial to run that large of wheels for handling, but maybe one day I'll put some that wide on just for fun.
Here's the company I work for: http://weddleindustries.com
Very cool! I really want one but I don't know if I could justify having a transmission that costs more than most people's engine. Maybe if I was wealthy. I like what Holinger does also, they make really cool stuff. There's nothing cooler than sequential.

Things are starting to pick up a little with my project and quite a bit should be happening in the next few months. I recently had custom headers made for the car and I'm very happy with the way they turned out. I'm planning on getting them and the rest of the exhaust system ceramic coated black when I send some of my other parts to be powder-coated.

I purchased a rotisserie to make the final metal work, blasting, priming and body work a little easier. My dad and I are finishing up the final metal work right now. The body and the chassis should both be going to get blasted very soon and then we plan on starting the body work and paint. I am really looking forward to assembling the car. I also ordered a Billet Specialties Tru Trac serpentine setup in black. You can see it mocked up in some of the photos.

After winter came up faster than I had hoped, my dad and I ended up doing all of the sandblasting for the chassis and body by ourselves in his garage in the temporary paint booth that we set up to do the blasting, priming, bodywork and paint in. I don't have an enclosed trailer and did not want to attempt to bring both the body and chassis out into the weather in bare metal. I purchased a sandblaster and we did all the work ourselves. The paint booth that we set up works great and once the body work and priming is finished on the body we plan to take down the poly that is currently up, thoroughly clean the floor and put up new poly so everything is nice and clean for base coat and clear. I actually debated not blasting the body because I was told that the car was solid and ready for paint by the guy who sold me the body. The windshield and rear glass channels were completely rotted out and the guy used body filler to fill in large holes and pits. There were also many other areas that were like Swiss cheese and he just smeared body filler or even seam sealer in some areas which was a pain to remove. Obviously I am glad we put in the work to blast the car even though he claimed the body was in perfect shape. Oh well I guess, it's completely solid now and ready to move forward.

Currently the chassis and suspension components are all painted and mostly assembled. I also had a few parts powder coated which turned out pretty decent in gloss black. The chassis is a low gloss black as well as the roll cage. The headers and exhaust pipes were ceramic coated in satin black. I'm really looking forward to assembling everything once the body is painted.

Yeah, that's what I figured too... The Black Dog Speed Shop cars in Pirelli WC had 4 on their 5th Gens and I really liked the way it looked. Plus I really didn't want to use the stock latch system and like you said stability. I'm using the Anvil Vents. Thanks dude.

Currently the car is at an interior shop here in Minnesota having a stock style headliner installed, along with custom carpet, custom rear package tray and custom kick panels. There are still quite a few things to sort out and finish but the car is finally able to move under it's own power. The side glass and the door panels will still need to be installed after the interior is finished along with installing the taillights and a few other things. The car will also be going on the chassis Dyno at TPIS in a couple weeks. Here are some photos from the last few weeks.

There are still a lot of little things to finish, adjust and tweak but the car is almost complete. I don't think it will ever be completely finished. I drove it down the road once but haven't been able to put any miles on it yet because of an idling issue which will hopefully be resolved soon so I can put some miles on the car before winter here in Minnesota. I'm planning on posting some video soon if all goes well.

The last year or so has gone by really fast. The car is now complete and I was able to make it to a few shows this summer. The reception of the car has gone over quite well with many people taking interest in the car and giving my dad and I positive comments. I was also fortunate enough to be chosen to receive an editors choice award from Power and Performance News at the Street Machine Summer Nationals show. I was given a very well made metal plaque that is incredibly nice. I was also fortunate to finish fairly well in two different autocross events I attempted. The car worked very well right out of the box and only needed minor shock adjustments to be competitive with other people who have been running autocross for many years. The car also put down 531 rear wheel horsepower on the dyno at one of the shows, which I was pleased with. I added a few photos from this summer so far. At the end of August the car will be going to California to compete in a Super Chevy Magazine muscle car challenge. The car will be driven by Jeff Schwartz in the competition. I'm sure it will be a fun event to witness.

Casey,

Did you get your fuel pump issues figured out yet?
If not, let me know if you need any help.

Hey Brandon, I was going to contact you to let you know the status. I ended up finding a new tank that is the same dimensions as the one I had. It has a sump already built into it, which will save all of the hassle and extra time and effort. I am switching everything over to Magnafuel. I'll definitely let you know if I need anything tig welded. It was nice talking to you at the events. I'm sure I'll see you around somewhere if I don't stop by your shop sometime in the near future.

Congrats on the Editor's Choice! Also glad to hear you've been able to get out there and enjoy the car this summer.

Awesome Beast! Quick question, do you recall what pound springs/shocks you're using on your hood hinges?
