My name is Joe, I am a 57 year old ex-Jarhead wrenching in my garage.I have been around lurking for a few years, just hanging back.
My daughter and I bought this 68 GT for her to drive while we customized a 63 Fairlane for her. My thought was it would take us a week to get it running, and driving, and it did.
One thing led to another, FMX died, swap meet replacement C4 made it 5 miles, 351 spun a bearing. She drove it to school once.
So, here we are two years later, decided to go somewhat pro-touring. Hopefully it sort of qualifies, I have seen the builds here, mine is low level.
I am installing a TKO600, Global West front suspension, fixing anything mechanical that moves, and then I will drive it for a while. When I have enjoyed it for a while I will blow it apart again, and make the outside look better than a pumpkin.
Here a pictures of what I have done...
November 2011, brought home from Cheyenne, WY

rebuilt 351, nothing special at this point, has a mild comp cam, stealth intake

my daughter Kasey did most of the prep to get the engine bay ready for paint.

how it looked for about 5 miles, then the so called "rebuilt C4" grenaded.

back to the drawing board, building hydraulic bracket, installing scatter shields, suspensions, etc.

Travis I thought you were my cohort?:headscratch: We're all just big cars.
I think there are 5 Torino's on here now. 2 Formal roofs. Joe check out Jason, Torino420s, Formal roof she is a sweet looking ride.

I agree with Ron, Joe, More:flashie: Glad to see you post some pictures. Looks like the previous owners for yours and mine got a deal on the same repaint.:unibrow:
Kasey looks to have done some really nice work on the prep. Those shock towers and aprons look nice. You would have cringed if you were there when I cut mine out they were flawless.:underchair:
Good post Joe!
Sounds like Kasey knows what elbow grease is all about, nice to see her vested in the process.
I also noticed you and Rob have similar work platform/pedestals......must be a Torino thing. :D
Keep up the good work as it looks it won't be long before the Torino is a reliable driver.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys :hail:
Kasey is a great helper, and a good wrench. She will be 18 on Veterans day (Semper Fi). She did get an alternate car to drive.
BTW, I do know Jason (Torino420) from the Torino forum. The picture of the clutch pedal linkage, and master cylinder setup is copied from his design.
I do have a few more pictures I can post.

the "great pumpkins" door jambs look like heck. You would have thought they could have wiped them down with lacquer thinner before applying the Elway Orange. I need a spring on my lower hing due to my doors not staying open.

Rob,
I had to get the "great pumpkin" elevated so I came up with that saw horse idea. I had those "back" pallets under the front tires at one time. I put the craftsman stands under/near the torque area. I am 6'7", and somewhat round too, at 275. I can now move around underneath and work on the TKO, the quicktime, etc.
For the front brakes I have already purchased the CSRP Kelsey Hayes style replacements. They are nothing fancy, but will bolt to my spindles, and the car will be a little safer. The old distribution block on the driver side fender was froze when I bought the car. I didn't know about that system when I bought the car, and how the slider in the block functioned. I bought two used ones, both were froze. I am replacing all of it now. The back will remain the large drums for now.
My Cragars are 16 x 7, and those are new Falkens, 235-60, I don't think that is a Pro Touring size or style, but they will get me by until they wear out, or I accidentally melt them with the TKO, and the 3:50 gearing. I would like to have 17" steel wheels, with a dog dish. When I bought the Cragars, I got them off C-list cheap, and they were in great shape. I didn't know the 16" size would be a pain to get tires for. They have a 5" back space.
The paint, hmmm not sure, I am all over the place on that. I sort of want it to look sinister if that makes sense. The formal roof 428 Cobra cars were always my favorite without the chrome, and outside marking. I am not shooting for a clone, but I am thinking of taking off all but the front and back GT marking, and having it be a darker tone. Maybe a grey, silver, or something similar. When I was working on the rear driver quarter window I had all the interior out. I was disappointed to find out someone had done a hack job on replacing that quarter panel. I will be in for a cash lay out on that side when the body work stage comes along. The "great pumpkin" may just get sanded down and get a hot rod satin black for a few years, lol.
BTW, that trim down the side's is off a Fairlane and makes no sense how it got there. Someone would have had to put all those little studs in the GT body, or special order it.
I am attacking all the mechanical's, make it safe and enjoy it for a while. I think Kasey would like to drive it a few times too, lol. I also am changing that horrible front suspension, and hope to go to a Borgeson steering box, I already have their PS pump.
Someone asked what the plans were for the 351, nothing else as of yet. It is a rebuilt unit, It seemed really strong for the five miles I put on it after the cam break in, lol. It has a Comp cam with 268 duration, .456 lift, 110 lobe separation. I have a Weiand Stealth intake, and a Edelbrock 600 CFM carb.

Clutch is in, working on slave cylinder, and clutch fork fitment. The fork I ordered was the wrong one, I had to use my daughter's T5 fork which appears to be just right.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/Ram_zps4a5f5d80.jpg
I bought a Horror Freight jack to help install the TKO since Kasey is working now. In January I tore my rotator cuff installing the TKO when it fell off the motorcycle jack, but I saved the transmission, but not my shoulder.
Mocking up the install here...

Rosehill performance slave cylinder bracket. I had to use a bolt for a pushrod to get a picture. I need to trim the stainless pushrod prior to install.

Well no work this weekend, but I can always post :flashie:
And I have a question with this one ??? When I finally get my Global West uppers back from them being altered, my front end will drop. I know I can drop the rear.
My tire size is 235/60-16 ~ 27.1 inches tall. How does that compare to a Pro Tour tire? I know the sidewall isnt a 35.
My assumption is the car can sit lower around the wheel/tire combo. Is it going to look goofy lowered down around this wheel? Wish I could envision it.

It's going to look better low. In the rear your tire is the same height as my 345 30 19 so it will tuck in and fill your wheel well really nice. FYI without tubs and with about 5.75" to 6" of BS you can fit a 285 tire on the rear of your car with the leaf springs.
Up front the shape of the fender lip makes it difficult to slam the car and get a good turning radius with a wide tire. Typically most tires on the front of the cars you see on here are 25.5" to 26" tall.
With your GW stuff I bet you can drop the front about 2" and still get decent turn radius with a 27" tall tire at 235mm wide, if the BS on the wheels is right. The taller tire will actually tuck up farther in the fender and give a more lowered look.
What size are your wheels? 16x7 or 16x8? A 16x8 with 4.5" BS is a pretty good fit on a shock tower car.
Now get out there and slam that thing and let's see it. Once you get the front lowered you can dial in the rear height to give you some rake. Keep in mind if you do swap to a shorter tire up front then that will create some rake.
If you get your butt to CA I'll give you my rearced Dever leafs that will lower your rear 1.5"

I also ordered trim for my pole barn, and I need to finish that up. I ordered a new patio door for my wife and that comes in three weeks from today. When that gets here my first floor remodel begins for her birthday. Then my progress will look like Torino 420's, lol...

Then I put in in the steering column. I wish I had taken pictures before, because I put it together, and took it apart three times before I remembered how it went together. It was an automatic column Kasey and I modified, and then painted.

I needed to move my Griffin radiator up about 1.250" so I built a prototype bracket. My bend calculation was off as usual, and the bead didn't turn out too straight. I learn from doing this so I will make another.
I need to make the bottom piece, but it will not be seen.

In order to do anything "straight" you need a fence or some kind of guide. No way can you do something like this by hand and expect it to be perfectly straight.
Nice piece… and if you're like me - I'll do it until I get it right and learn a bunch of stuff along the way. Then the first buddy that stops by will say -- Hey dip squat! Why didn't you do it "X" way? And I'll scratch my head and wonder just why I didn't… :>)

My son would go to his mother and ask her to pay for someone to modify his car.

Fences work great if you have a straight parallel outer edge to work from. So far I've found that's rarely the case (often cause I can't cut a straight line :/) The last floors I did, I used a well placed little piece of angle iron clamped to the part and rolled along it as a guide. Not perfect but I was very pleased with the end results.
Just presenting options! Looks good, I've enjoyed following along.

I hear ya, I had to build a fence "designed and produced by "Rube Goldberg" just to make that piece.
I spent all morning modifying my cheap ass bead roller to make this one piece, and the  went off and I remembered all the posts I read on the internet about buying a Mittler Brothers unit instead, the first time around.

Just ran across this thread. Nice project. It brings back memories, as my first car was a '68 Torino GT, blue in color, with a 289 - 2bbl motor, and a four speed purchased in 1973. Apparently the original 302 had been blown. It was a good car, and got mid to high-20's for highway fuel mileage. I traded it in 1974 at Billion Motors in Sioux Falls, SD for a 1972 R-code Mustang Mach 1. Thanks for the thread.

Greg, I am patiently awaiting the :ups:
Mrs Claus, ordered me a Borgeson steering box from Amazon. It is one of those "we will ship it when it becomes available" parts, but it was allot cheaper than anywhere on the internet.
My parts stash dictates I have enough inventory I can keep busy for several weeks anyway.

I have been searching C-List for buckets for months. i have even went and looked at some.
My wife suggested I check a local wrecking yard for seats, it's where she recycles here pop cans. Last Friday I asked her if she would like to go with me so we bundled up (it was 20*) and went for a junk yard run.
We looked for almost an hour, and almost gave up when she spotted these in a 98, 5 series BMW, all electric, and leather. Luckily no rips, filthy as heck, covered with glass, no guarantee they would work.
I had to wait until Monday to pick them up, and since we celebrate on Christmas eve, the day was mine.
Here are the before and after pictures of what a good cleaning did.

Back after a three month "Force March" on the house remodel. Still not done with the remodel, but i took a week off of work just to focus on my Torino.
I finally got the Global West parts on, Doug Nordin's crew redesigned the upper control arms to fit my shock towers.
I also have disk brakes reminiscent of the Kelsy Hayes 4-piston style this would have had on it in 68. I need to paint the "British Green calipers" :disgusted:

I also started on the Borgeson power steering box install, which requires I shorten the collapsible column. It will still be collapsible, just shorter by 1.5 - 2.0 inches. I need to fine tune it.

I love the look of poverty caps. For a long time I considered doing the same thing but in 18". 18" gives you a better selection of tires with some height to fill up the rear.
A 285 fits out back with leaf springs and no tubs I did a 285 17 on teh rear of mine for the first time around. I think a 275 40 18 for the rear and a 255 35/40 18 for the front on 18x10s. That's 25"/26" tall front and 26.5" tall rear. They will fill the wheel wells up. I had a 245 on a 8.5" wheel up front with my shock tower suspension so I'm sure you can fit the 255 as long as the car isn't super slammed. I still have my custom arched leafs that Dever Spring made for me hanging around (about 2" lower ride height). If you get out this way I'd give them to you.

I have my Borgeson power steering box installed but it requires I shorten my steering column. In 68 Ford changed to a collapsible column which made it a little harder to shorten, and I had just repainted and re-installed it so I managed to beat it up modifying it.
It has 3 collapsible sections and I removed 1.5" from the outside piece to start with, and I also removed the auto shift lever from the inside tube. I made two Delrin bushings to help center the inside tube, and the steering shaft, although the steering shaft bushing is mainly for aesthetics, and to keep stuff out of the tube.
I have to mount it in the Torino and see if my measurements are correct, if not I have to remove more. Trial and error.

I had some time off of work and was able to complete a few tasks on the GT.
I ran into a known issue with the Quicktime RM6065, and Lakewood, now Accell told me I would have to modify it myself (where is the "you can KMA smiley" when you need it). The starter will not bolt up to the blockplate and I was faced with pulling my TKO out.
I made a template using my C4 block plate and stuffed the starter hole full of plastic bags and taped it off. I had to grind out enough material to turn the starter to the "2:00 O-Clock position to get the bolts to thread in and the starter to sit flat in the block plate.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/photo_zps066a9dc7.jpg
With that fixed a normal Ford started would now fit. I also found out through all my "GOOGLING" that Ford made Mini PMGR starters for the 5.0 Mustangs , so I bought one.

Brake lines were on the agenda so I did some research and found a Disc/Drum Ranger master cylinder. I also had a Master Power Brakes combination valve, and it had a non-functional bracket so I had to fab up a new one. I spent a few days learning how to bend and flare brake lines, as I had never done that before either.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/bracket_zps6ab2d838.jpg
The lines were really close to the Wilwood master cylinder, so it was a challenge.

Hey Jarhead,
I don't mean to hijack your thread, but all the talk of steel wheels here gets me excited. I'm a steel wheel guy. I just got a new set of Wheel Vintiques Mopar steelies for my Falcon in 15x8--yeah, I'm also committed to 15-inch wheels for some reason. I know the Mopar wheels are somewhat wrong (but look so good!), but they do use the same bolt pattern, and you can't see my brake rotors/calipers behind them (cool!). I wish I had a picture, as they're made for dog-dish/poverty caps, but I'm just going to run them plain, like the caps fell off or something...
Continue the cool stuff with the Torino--you'll love the difference the new goodies make!

I have been ordering parts and prepping the underside to receive the QuickPerfomance 9". I bought a Eaton trutrac with 31 spines and new axles. I also bought a new gas tank, mine leaked and had more patches than Joseph's coat of many colors.
My neighbor TIG'd in the new Moser fill bung and the Currie drain bung, after i cleaned up the housing that appears to have been submerged in the Titanic.
I need to do a quick sand job on the inside of the trunk and spray it while I spray the underside of the car.

Wheels and Tires....
Got a MINT set of these from Dave (nopants68) for Kasey's 63 and she snubbed her nose at them. I was like they would be cool on your car, she said no thanks, so I am putting them on mine.
Need some steelies, but can only find these...
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wvi-62-7912518/overview/
From previous conversation FE Torino said
"In the rear your tire is the same height as my 345 30 19 so it will tuck in and fill your wheel well really nice.
AND
A 285 fits out back with leaf springs and no tubs I did a 285 17 on teh rear of mine for the first time around.
Currently have 235-60-16

This 68 pictured has 17 x 9's all around. 245/45's up front and 275/40's in the back
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/IMG_2835JPG_Thumbnail1_zpsa0440ab9.jpg
With that said will a 285 fit on a 9" wheel?
I currently have 5" backspace on my Cragar's, and what do I make of this offset calc?
Backspacing (in):5.125 in.
Offset:+3.00mm

Thanks, it keeps evolving:lol:
I bought the aftermarket ram-air from James on the Torino Cobra forum. I bought the lid from Semo Mustang, and a WIX filter. James allows you to delete things you don't need.
He has his own website with different versions. It's a blow molded injection part . I sanded, primed, wet sanded, painted, repeat, rinse, on mine

Well last week I plunked down a large down payment to get my motor built.
After weeks of surfing, asking questions, etc I decided on a Fordstrokers.COM
427 Dart SHP block
4.125 bore X 4.0 stroke
Specs are here

Going to run a Horsepower Innovation e85 Holley, about 12:1 compression. e85 is plentiful here.
A Super Victor if it will fit under my hood.
Jim Wood is known for doing only 302/351W based motors so I am excited.
Shooting for 500+ HP ~ 500 Torque
More to come :flashie:

It has been a while since I updated this...
I had 9 days straight to work on the sheetmetal and had to go back to work Tuesday.
I don't have allot to show as I had not expected how long it would take to cut 1 million spot welds :bang:
I started by cutting out the driver side floor pan, and toe kick.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/Rust/IMG_1222_zpsagx5lstm.jpg
I did some rust prevention using POR15 on the "so called" frame rail.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/Rust/IMG_1503_zpshoga7xrx.jpg
My transmission mounts were only spot welded on, I guess that how they did it in 1968. I ran some beads in several places so I didn't have to worry about ripping them off when I dump the clutch  .
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/Rust/IMG_1496_zpszc5ev73s.jpg
I set the floor pan and toe kick in place and did some more marking. I have not tacked them in yet because I need to make a pattern to use for tunnel replacement.

Thanks Jason,
Yes I took all the wiring out and will get a Ron Francis. I called them and they will give you a better selection than their vendors get (so to speak), you can specify different things for a harness that say you would order from Summit using the same part number.
I may get this one or the next higher priced one, depends on the needs of the system when I get there :-)

I never did care for the extra large tail lights on the 68.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/Rust/IMG_1049_zpspjcmq6mn.jpg
Made a prototype sheetmetal piece to get close as possible for the 69 mounting.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r194/CattkeKing/Torino/Rust/1A%20-%201%202_zpsbqfmhmtq.jpg
Found the best location for it and held it temporarily with sheet-metal screws.

The 69 tail light assemblies are installed. I still am not happy with the final results, back to the 18 gauge stash for another pattern.
I bit the bullet and bought a lower front drivers side quarter panel, and a trunk drop down. The amount of time it took to make the light mounts was more time than I had to spare, but I like fabrication.

Progress has been slow as hell. Been having some health issues ...
My wife has been seeing me struggle and asked what I needed to help with the car since Kasey is off to College. I told her I could use a rotisserie and possibly a bead roller a few months ago. That came a week ago so I took 3 days off and to took me all three days at my pace to get it put together and make unibody mounts. I did cut a little more floor out and brace the door jambs.
I will use the bead roller to do the firewall and some other stuff so it is a little different. I also have Kasey's 63 to do.

Apparently I just gawk at other folks projects and never post any progress on mine. Maybe because I am always building pergola's our yard work?
I haven't got much done in a year, mainly because sheet metal work is frightening :superhack:
Jody really needs a MIG welder Smilie :mock:
So I had to go to the salvage yard because my trunk weatherstripping channel was rotted out. I found a 69 Fairlane which was helpful because it also had the tail light sheetmetal in it that I wasted a week on making and didn't get quite right.
I started with the passenger side that drops down along the trunk, tedious and stressful.
jarhead
02-09-2018, 08:12 AM
Then feeling confident I moved along to the driver side, but I found rust in the "so called frame rail".:smiley_smack:
jarhead
02-09-2018, 08:17 AM
I had to clear ou the rust in the rail. make a pattern and then a patch out of the salvage yard metal and by then I was concerned about welding that corner up without the trunk lid on...
So I did what any amateur fabricator would do :badidea: I moved on the the wheel tubs and left this for another day until I grew a bigger pair.
jarhead
02-09-2018, 08:26 AM
Since I had already cut the inside wheel well out on the driver side I started working on it. It was 40* in the shop so I got it tacked in place and had to quit. There was some pattern making I forgot to take pictures of during the deep freeze but I did get some pictures.
I did some measuring and I am confident I can get a 305/35-18 in here, Maybe a 19 if I find the right wheel that I like. I am kind of set on a "steelie" look..
Hopefully I can get back out the soon and do some more welding.

When you put a tack --- while it's still "hot" in that area -- just tap the metal down on either side of it (1/2" in either direction). Tack that newly closed up area and repeat....
I use a hammer like this.... doesn't take hardly any tapping because the metal moves nicely when it's heated from the tack...
Use the "pointy end" across (perpendicular to) the gap

Keep that welder humming and the shop will warm up! Same as already
been said, don't worry about cutting something up. Best part of metal work is we can cut stuff up and put it back together as many time as it takes, carpenters run out of wood!
Very cool that you found a 69 in the salvage yard. That would never happen here.

trying to dial in the wheel size and offset so i can order the 9" housing...:ups:
A 18x12 will fit the back, but i may need to go with the 11".
Now i have to narrow it down to what wheel i want, i am all over the place. If i go with a "steely" and poverty cap i will have to have them widened.
18x9 isn't quite going to make it on front. it's pretty close but i'd have to do the "57HemiCuda mod" to the fenders, and I don't have Ron's skills :D:D:D
GregWeld

I like the poverty cap / steelie look.....
And here's something everyone should remember around here.... nobody was born with the skills... they're acquired... and come faster with the more scrap that lays on the ground. The beauty of metal.... you can cut it and bend it and pound it and shorten it and length it... wad it up and toss it and start over.... Then you'll stand back and slap yourself on your sorry worn out old shoulder - and think "hmmmmmm never woulda thought I could build something like that!".
Doesn't have to be Brycen "mymetalduckiscoolerthanyours" metal work either.... because that's why they make Bondo!

Yes I am measuring to see if I can put pockets in the original frame rails and reinforce the outside of them. I have been looking at how SpeedTech manufactures their extreme chassis, that looks like a great option on making the pockets. I want them to be inside the frame rails rather than on top with sandwich brackets if that makes sense.

Had to remove the temporary supports I had holding the housing. I didn't have enough steel on hand so I used a couple of old lawn tractor blades :drowninga:
I ordered some spring perches so I could drop it down a little farther to mock-up trailing arm clearance.

Not yet, have to finish paying for them Dec 2nd.
Larry and Zak are awesome to deal with. They allowed me the time (weeks and weeks) to get the measurements right.
I agonized over the measuring :headscratch:, built jigs, built supports for a 9" housing, had a friend come over and double check all my measurements.
Going with titanium centers and brushed barrels.
jarhead
12-09-2019, 05:53 PM
I got the housing setting on some square tubing that is tacked to the frame rails and on top of actual spring perches. I got it as low/high as I think it will be for bottoming out.
I then was able to get it all squared up and centered so I mad some templates out f cardboard, then hardboard. I need to get these dialed in and have four of them plasma cut.
more fiddling ahead

Joe, this one isn't mine. I borrowed it from a buddy who has a shop and uses it all the time that warrants the need to buy one. I would only need it this one time and therefore, weren't willing to spend the coin either. I, too, have way too many needs as well.
