Hey guys, been on here for a little over a year. I've had the car on the road since April of '11 and have had it since '91. Got it from a friend as it was totaled. I use to have a 71' RS in the mid eighties and have missed it ever since. Well this one has seen paint jail, a business startup, three kids (and college funds),,,,etc.etc, nuff excuses...lets get this thing slideways....

Currently has beefy T56, 12 bolt 3:73, full Hotchkis dress, Baer's sport/track, nice interior new with older Recaro's (soon to be new ones), 6 point and subframe connectors to come, coil over's to come (the Hotchkis front coil's are waaaay too stiff and dont sit right after i've cut them four times (a little at a time).
Plenty of work to do....but its a start...

Hey Mike question for you, who's hood do you have? It looks like the cowl is smaller then most I've seen? Not to big me likey :headspin:
The hood is an actual cowl off of a 70 SS chevelle that the previous owner did back in the early 80's, i dont think i could ever do that to a factory hood. My body guy took it off of the one they had done (all bondo) and tacked it on a good hood and its what we have. I'd like to get the actual cowling to work, that'd be interesting...

Well she fires and runs.
Bugs, GTO computer was for an Auto, my T56 isnt agreeing with the computer, six reprograms with HP Tuners and its getting closer. But my mechanic Josh is on vacation this week so the bugs will have to wait, although she is very drivable. Me likey.
The clutch is still "not blead" enough imo, two GM techs have said sometimes ya just gotta drive em for one to two weeks to settle everything in. I would have liked to install the Tick performance adjustable clutch master....so well see next week.
Any opinions on this matter?
Thanx, Mike

Its an LS1 with an 85mm intake and long tubes....and heads getting built and a cam in the works. The heads are getting done in Fremont by Angie i believe of Daves engine and machine, and is spec'n a custom grind from comp. but thats phase 2. Right now i am at about 410 at the crank and i just need to learn how to "drive" .

its getting closer, but running into computer gremlins. Redid the computer, swapped out the GTO computer for an 01 F body computer, now running into fuel issues. May be the fuel pump in the new Spectre tank, may.....to be continued.

did this on my Tick install....
unhook the line that goes into the slave and push on the pedal lightly by HAND. pretty sure if you do it by foot, your going to blow the line up. When i was bench bleeding like normal i left the plunger inside the quick disconnect closed and slightly pressed the rod and watched all my air bubbles go straight up the reservoir

thanks scott, i will try that.
still cant figure out the "fuel" shut off issues, have a thread going on in high tech retrofits, but still havent found the problem. We're thinking it may be weak pump in the tank, new, but weak. Thats my gut....

Well, went on the Goodguys trip to Texas on is maiden road trip, 2nd time on the freeway on its way too texas. Had a great time. Car ran great, had no fuel issues at 6000'. Car had a great run, steering issues still to be sorted and still can't fill the tank to full (venting or baffling issues) and small driveline shimmy (probably the shaft) and no a/c sucked in Arizona
Knocked down 24.89 mpg and went 2085 miles. LS is the waaaay to go.
80 mph, 2000 rpm, with 3:73's and 17"rims.
Pics to follow when I get home,

Congrats on the successful trip,I bet it was a good time,do you have a vent on your tank?
glassman
10-07-2013, 07:12 PM
Yeah, its been vented and revented, i think there either may be fuel or a pinch in my hard line, but my venting hose goes up above the tank and i believe its routed correctly, still may be a baffling issue. One thing we noticed (David Pozzi to give credit where credit is due) spotted the filler tube goes all the way down to the bottom of the tank. I get the car home on thursday, so up on stands it goes (it seems to like being worked on, kind of like a chick hooked on plastic surgery)

Hey Mike,
It was great meeting you and some of the other Lat-G guys last weekend. I enjoyed hearing about your trek from the west coast in spite of your drivetrain difficulties. I also enjoyed checking out your ride as I am headed in the same direction with my '72. I can only hope to have mine as far along and at next years Good Guys alongside yours.
Looking forward to hearing you've sorted everything out and are back on the road soon in spite of your busy schedule.
Thanks again for taking the time to share and I hope to see you guys back in the Big D next year.

just to clear up some of the questions that were posted before, in case someone is losing sleep over it:
The fuel pump was indeed causing our cut-out issues. But we did chase the traction control stuff all the way through that computer. Dang, they hid stuff everywhere. We went back to the GTO computer because the f-body computer didn't like the GTO oxygen sensors. Somewhere in one of these posts by glassman there's a youtube link of it cutting out. I'll post it here, just in case: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NsnFdl6wzo
you can see the fuel pressure plummet under load.
and the clutch didn't need to be bled. The problem ended up being a combination of not enough shimming for the pilot bearing on the new front plate conversion and too much preload on the input shaft behind the front plate conversion. When we switched from LT1 front plate to LS1 front plate my brother put an extra shim in the input shaft bearing recess and it spec'd out fine.. except when we torqued down the front plate it got too tight in there so it was making the first few gears tough to shift into. We must've had the transmission out 3 or 4 times on that one. (and I thought I was fast at pulling T56's before.. I got it down to a science now)
now if we could only get the tank to full, we'd be in pretty good shape.
if you're more interested in some chatter on the build, I threw up a quick blog post on it, too.

P.S. Sorry to hijack your thread, glassman, just wanted to tie up the loose ends on some of the questions and talk a little more about the build. I'm sure some of you like to stick your noses under the hood a little bit :unibrow: I know I do!

Well after two months of research: front clip vs. control arms and steering, tomorrow she's going to Custom Works in Chico for a little work
March "sport track" accessories
Speedtech upper and lower CA's
AFCO adj coil-overs
Custom Works sub frame connectors
GM new steering box 14:5-1 i believe
Power coat existing subframe assembly
Hooker headers new ones
Hooker engine mounts and crossmember
So I decided to do this over the subframe change out for a couple of reasons:
#1 I'm a "good" driver but not great, need more saddle time so I wont be able out drive my talent for quite some time.
#2 $6300 to $7200 plus exhaust, brakes, and other incidental's adds up quick vs $4200 and i get to keep the Baer "track" brakes i have on it now, which are good, but not as "good" as what would of came on a subframe set up.
#3 Hooker's new set-up i saw at SEMA was a serious seed for me, pretty much turn key and gets all the angles and clearances just right for a good price and minimal headache, i've been through enough with the LS swap as it is.
So as she sits now, the Dynatech headers sit 2.375 from finished floor to bottom of collector now, I've got the trans-adapt engine mounts at their highest setting (my t-56 is 3/16 from the tunnel), I may be able to get the Dynatech exhaust to work as its 22.5 C/L right now and the Hooker setup is 20.5 c/L. So in my opinion, the collector is just too low.
I currently have 0 steering under "autocross" conditions, something we did in the swap with the reservoir effed up my steering, plus i needed a new box anyways, 2 to 3 inches of play was a little much. The car steers fine on the freeway and left and right turns, but when forced, it hydraulically locks up.
Plus my alternator being so low took away Ackerman angle so the geometry is off, which could be adding to the problem, when i "jerk" the steering wheel.
So moving the alternator, new power steering box, and adding a/c, was worth it to get the March "sport track" kit, $1450 vs $2400 for the Wegnar, while i like the Wegner setup more, a grand is a grand (less new water pump), so we'll see if this March set-up is worth the 850 or so, cause i've "bought" many a headache's in the past by trying to save money. With three kids in college right now, yes, life is very expensive. So hopefully, in a month or so, i'll have a front suspender set up ALOT more dialed in than what i have now...
Now, to ponder the rear....

I would not worry at all about the subframe. They are great with a few modifications and reinforcments. Just Keiths addition of the Delphi box will wake it up nicely.
Keith will give it the run through. Talk him into making composite wheel houses for you too!! For that much needed tire space.

You've basically listed the same reasons I intend to keep my front sub as well, Mike. I can't afford a new front subframe and rear suspension. I'd love to go with one of Scott's front ends but I simply can't justify changing out the entire front sub either. Good luck with it. Let us know how you like it once it's back together.

When i saw the hookers in vegas (my wife will love that line) they were almost flush with the frame rail using their mounts and xmember. I think that pic has somewhat of an optical illusion to it. Yeah, the closer the low spot is to the tire the better. Tire goes over the obstacle and the header will go up too.

I was thinking about those new Hooker headers myself since they are for "maximum ground clearance" in the description. Reading all the articles I could only find pics of the 74-81 headers and a note saying they won't fit the 70-73 because they will hit the floor. This made me very nervous about them. Sorry you had to be the Guiney pig....and it's not working out.

Todd, we werent able to get that dimension today, but the t-56 is where it was at before, almost rubbing the tunnel, so the engine cant go up any. Pretty sure everything is the right parts, we may just have to swap them for the later gen 2 stuff. Also, can you check and see if theres any mathematical difference between the ss ones and the ceramic ones i bought, the ones on the SEMA display were s/s.
I'll upgrade if i have too, i'm looking to gain an inch. would be nice and acceptable if we could acheive that, otherwise the Dynatechs were fine in my case. Somebody else looking to use this kit for an LS swap, it is a good kit, easy and well priced.

So, the subframe is stock. Only the upper shock towers have been modified to accept coil-overs, and the front g-bar mount has nothing to do with it. So that rules the modified subframe possibility out.

It is possible that you have a set of big block frame mounts instead of a small block set? I cannot remember which is which, but as I recall, there is a difference in the height of the mounts between the SBC and BBC...
I don't know if it would matter or not, but did the subframe come from a Camaro or a Firebird?

above is not the case. Custom Works Performance is on a pretty small network of authorized dealer/installation centers for Hooker/Holley EFI. I have Todd's cell phone number and we have been working really hard to figure out any issue here. The frame mounts are correct, because the Hooker kit requires use of the clamshell mounts. There is no issue with fitment, and the early headers fit pretty much where they were intended to fit. Todd and I have compared pictures back and forth. We believe that there may be an issue with minor changes GM did to the chassis, and or body bushing dimensions.
So you know, I couldn't be more happy with the installation of the Hooker LS mounts, cross member, and headers. We have been selling lots of these pieces and will continue to do so. It is the best complete system out on the market, and the price is pretty fair as well. Also we will be installing the Hooker relocation brackets for the accessories on Mike's car. We will be able of offer you pictures and our feedback on how they work and fit!
There is no need for everyone to go on a lynching. Mike is very pleased with the look of his new parts. His only issue is that the gains in ground clearance have been less than what he expected. So right now Custom Works and Todd at Hooker are working together to ensure the products you get meet your expectations. In the mean time call if you have any questions or need some parts 530 864-5846 Keith- Custom Works Performance

Steve, the car is held up a little at Custom Works due to the accessories mounting. The kit i ordered from March (sport trac kit) doesn't work for our second gens, the bracketry allows the alternator to go out too far and hits the inner fender....parts from Holley should be at Keith's shop around Thursday.

I have had nothing but problems with 2nd gen header clearance. My guess is the manufacturers would rather have it closer to the ground than the floor boards. liability with potential fire hazard I suppose.
I now run mid lengths and extend the collector tube and attach with a band clamp. It also involves notching the frame. :underchair:
I wish these guys would at least take some advise if someone (like Keith and myself) had offered it free of charge.
BTW the Edelbrock ones fitment WAS pretty nice.

Of all the long tubes, which have the best ground clearance, is it the Stainless works or Kooks or something else?
Which mid lengths and extensions do you use? Do you have any pics of this setup? I remember a comment from Stielow that he like the mid lengths too due to clearance and that the power loss is extremely low compared to the full length. I'm thinking I'll take this route for my car

Kooks are nice but out of budget for most of my clients. Power loss is miniscule. Not enough to sacrifice ground clearance and a set of expensive headers everytime you drive down town.
I have an album on the header and modifications made on my facebook page. The headers, mods, coating and labor was less than $800.

I plan to either make my own or go the midlength route like Vince. I figured I would be doing this simply because no one that I know actually makes a header that clears a WS6 subframe. We will see where my welding skills are when it comes time to build the headers. Kinda wish the Hooker parts had worked out. Though, moving the engine to the center wasn't something I was really wanting.
Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience with the Hooker parts, Mike.

The only problems i really had with the hooker stuff is the distance of the headers to the ground. Otherr than that, its a good product for a good price, also gets your pinion angle just right, i didnt like the face that it moves the engine over a 1/2 inch, screwed up all the power steering stuff and alternatlr bracketry...but yeah, the mid lengths are the ticket.
Now we have what we think are some coil's not firing, almost ready to bring home, detail then auto-x, then cage and mini tubs, rims and torque arm or four link.....
ks71z28
02-07-2014, 11:26 AM
While the Hooker stuff was a disapointment, Mike's car was really nice to work on, and will now run with the big dogs! We beefed up his subframe, installed our coilover kit, added additional bracing, and powdercoated the frame. We installed a set of our subframe connectors and solid body bushings. We also installed new upper and lower control arms. The underside of the car is stunning. We installed the Hooker headers, and also re-worked Mikes Dynatech exhaust system to tuck the X pipe up another INCH! Unfortunately the headers are the low point. I was able to tweak the driverside to at least match the clearance of the passenger side???
We also installed the entire Holley accessory bracketry. Fo anyone with a 2nd gen interested in using this stuff we have some work arounds and I suggest calling us to assist in making it work, it is the cheapest way to go, and looks factory, oh it is!

Going up to Chico today to trailer it home. Since we had to move the coil packs from behind the engine to the stock placement back on top of the valve covers (the holley system moved the engine back 1/2" so no room), we had to install the stock LS1 coils i got when i bought the engine, turns out about 1/2 of them are bad.
Keith borrowed a side from his buddy's car and it ran fine, so he drove it 10 or so miles to "shake it down". So alls well cept the coil's..plus he'd rather me trailer it home and do small trips for a while to make sure everything's good.

OK. So Josh and i got the coils (well Josh) squared away, got her runnin and took her out on her maiden (new suspension) voyage tonite at dusk. Wow, just wow. If you can "picture" whats something is supposed to feel like, thats is how my suspension and steering now "feel" like, its just right. Baked first and second and the steering and the car are planted just right.
The subframe connecters, Gbar bracing, Speedtech UCA's and LCA's and AFCO coilovers and new steering box, its like driving a whole new car, no comparison to the way it was before.
Like to give Keith at Custom Works a shout out, great service, great pricing and overall a great job. He did the Holley/Hooker mounts/exhaust conversion. Powder coated the subframe, door hinge bushings, and new front accessory package.
Pics to follow and some slideways video....

I've got build threads on both PT and NastyZ. PT link is in sig and here's NastyZ http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=155518
I haven't updated anything simply because there's nothing to update. I'm working on getting the seats I bought installed but work is slowing me down there. I hope to start a thread here soonish since this is my home mainly now. I'm moving really slow though so it won't be updated often.
After the seats go in, seat belts are next. Then, I'll move onto suspension and chassis bracing. I'm still not as decided as I thought I was on suspension so I'm glad to see you're enjoying your setup.
How smooth is it so far with bumps and cracks in the road? In particular, the leafs?

My thoughts as well. Though I do have a lot of experience driving 4th gens and c4/5 vettes. I may be biased from the get go but I'll give it a shot I think. I can always sell the leafs off later on when all my dividend investing makes me rich :D
I'm taking this same attitude towards building the LT up also. Keep the initial build simple but on a solid foundation. Upgrade from there if I think it'll be worth it. If not, in goes a stroker 6 liter. Learn a lot along the way and have fun doing so. Hopefully.

You are hanging out with the wrong bunch then! A multi link rear suspension costs about 7-10 times more than a good rear leafspring set up, once you factor in the well I may as well mini tub, and so on.....
We have steel leafs and composite leafs to suit any performance or comfort situation. The limiting factor with leafs is really the amount of tire you can put under them. Most of the multi link rear suspension systems out on the market are flawed in some way due to the impossible packaging under the car.
Also, generally speaking the shock valving has more to do with a rough ride than does the spring rate. Mikes car has what would be considered a pretty stiff spring rate, but rides sweet because the great valving on the double adjustable AFCO coilovers he's got. It's all in the combo!

One option, as Vince can appreciate is to modify a set of headers, VS building a custom set. Some headers lend themselves well to this.
Well after smashing several set of headers, trying to find better ones, and offering to help manufacturers re-design there headers for better ground clearance, we decided to take matters into our own hands! We had a set of Hooker Super Comp headers that fit pretty well, with near equal length primaries and 1.75" tubes. The aweful Hooker ceramic coating had gone to sh*t in less than 2 years, the "Hooker" badge had fallen off, and the bottoms were now a bit flat, so we had nothing to lose. We were able to section about 3/4 out of each tube to move the collector up approx 3/4". Our goal is to get the car about 1/4" lower in ride height, and gain a little more ground clearance. For now all the tubes are fit and ready to be TIG welded, but for now they are just tacked together to test fit. We will be doing a new custom stainless exhaust to snake around our new torque arm rear suspension, trying to fit a true X pipe in about 10" of space, wish me luck!

Lookin good Keith! that' should do the trick. I scraped mine twice on the freeway doin a cool 70 on my way back from Laguna two weekends ago. Todd sent me a box (thursday i believe) so i will be playing with it as time permits over the next couple of months or a hole in the headers, whichever comes first i believe.
Ordered the rest of the roll bar from CA this week, so next week it will be "cutting sheet metal thirty" in my garage. Dry fit, then have Kyle the welder do his magic. Hopefully that will be done before T-Hill on May 3rd.
Fixed the latch.
Drove it 325 miles so far since Keith has done the front end and i must say all is well with the suspenders and steering!
Now for more power, cause baking them through 2nd gear isn't enough LOL

Glad you're enjoying the ride, Mike. Funny you should mention headers. I was just laying under mine today thinking about how I want to run the exhaust because I'm not interested in scrapping headers at 70. Making my own is still the route I intend to take. Hopefully, Todd/Holley can get the issues resolved and offer a great fitting header.

Also trying to get some photos up from the current set up that Keith did. Car drives fantastic.
Too funny also, my very first run on the course yesterday morning, bam, car breaks. Thought it was a fuel pump, turned out to be a bad crimp at the relay box feeding power to the pump. Whew.

Well, the car finally had a track day.
Went up to Thunderhill with Greg W and Sieg and met up with Dave, G, Ron.
What a great time.
I signed up for the school as i've never been on a track before, as a passenger or pilot. Dam it! Its about time. Getting this car "track worthy" has been quite a project. 22 years in the making (guys dont feel bad about your "delayed" projects, you know who you are).
So, said i wasn't gonna go on the track with out a rollbar, well......you know how that goes "i'm just gonna take it easy and do the school". Well after some making fun of my car in the class "Hey Bill (my instructor) can you go with Mike in the Camaro? How olds the car?, Dam thats things almost as old as me". hahaha, very funny mother fu.......r. I said "well, i've done some thingss to it" he says "like what?", so i tell him the list of a few major things, he smiles, looks at me and says "ha, were gonna have fun".....Holy crap. He has me doin a 100 down the main straight on my warm up lap, has me pass the one car in front of me, bam were gone. Turns out, i was thrown in with the wolves, hes an ex transam champion and pro and pro track instructor. Man i learned what this car can do.
Effin fun. Moved my way outa "beginner" real quick. It was a blast having the track to virtually myself during the last three sessions. Only got past twice, once was a "Busch cup car" and a new Shelby mustang. Now, this was the beginner's group.....but hey....

Epic weekend, one of my favorites of all time. I'm hooked. Been wanting to do this my whole life and finally....dreams do come true.
Only issue i had all weekend was a broken spot weld on my hood latch and the hood kept "unlatching". So a rubber bungee under the hood around the g brace, good to go.
Ran it up to 125 ish up the front straight, 6500 rpm in fourth, then hard on the brakes and gentle smooth drift into turn one at 80 ish.....so much fun.
Great instructor, he only ran with me two outa the four sessions the school had, and said "i recommend you go up to the next group, you got this".
I felt good, confident, but not overly so. Still have great respect for these machines we use, they can hurt you in an instant. So what i did was push the machine till i felt comfortable for the both of us. Well, used all of the track, pushed the machine to its limits (tach and tires)....and she loved it.
Very very worth it.
The suspension work Keith at Custom Works did was outstanding. I am running 245's up front and 275's in the back and the car was very welll balanced. Front wasn't coming out nor was the rear coming around. I went from curb to curb in each turn as fast as possible and simply fell in Love with this sport.
I'm in trouble. Can't wait to go again.......
Thanx for checkin, Mike

Well just made it home from a 4000 mile road trip. Yep, 4000. 2400 from Pleasanton Ca to Texas, north route, Texas to home south route. The car, well Shes hurtin for certain.
The Hooker/Holley LS i installed after SEMA last year is a complete bust. The headers were so low, we found cracks in the tubes (In Texas of course) and it ran full rich the whole way home. Not knowing this was the problem, we ran outa gas in the middle of nowhere in north west texas (at mile 260 and was getting up to 400 per tank). Had the complete good fortune of an empty flat bed come by and towed us to Amarillo. Thank goodness it was only a gas issue. My MPG went from 23 to 16. And thats a longass drive.
Gonna do a write up on the trip like i did last year. It will be in open discussion, but I wont mention Charlie, hes a handful.
Great people, great driving great time. Shi__ty weather. Two friggen hurricanes. one in Utah (roof caved in across from where we were stayin) and comeing into Fort Worth. Rained each day. But the show was better than last year.
More to follow, but i've been away for 11 daze and time to spend some time with my lovely of 28 years.

Can't leave "well enough" alone. Well, it wasn't enough.
After talking to a few different people, I decided to take it to CustomWorksPerformance in Chico. Keith has done me right in the past, and i'm confident he'll do the same this time. He could work with my schedule and do some other things to it as well....
DSE rear. Mini tubs. Forgelines. New Exhaust. and a couple of other goodies....Wegner Motorsports accessories kit, and too come Texas Speed and Performance heads and cam.
Here are some high quality pics

No updates on my car really, Mike. I've got an alignment coming up that I need to do. I did just get my Pypes system in and a new rear end to start building. Planning on either 3.90s or 4.10s and a Trutrack dif I believe. Plan to order my header parts soon, too. So, lots of plans and ideas but no really progress.

Thanx Skip, yeah 4100 miles on this one trip, the exhaust was bad from Hooker from the get-go, i shouldn't have "let it go"...cause now i have a weird wiring issue with my O2 sensors (causing a full rich scenerio) and i thought it was the wearing out of the headers from being too low, but it appears i hit something and tore some of the wiring loose, not sure....but after driving it 4100 miles on this trip, after about two or three dayz, i just wanted to drive it again....i guess thats a good thing.

As of right now, I'm likely going to leave the torque arm in place, there is no way I can get my car and Mike's car finished. If I miss the only event close to us, that would be stupid.
