We just started this project Monday.. The car has been lingering here @ the shop for a few months putting a plan together for it.. Last Saturday I drove it 2 the SoCal Challenge & now is in pcs ready for upgrades…

Car was an original 440 6 Pack, 4 speed, Dana 60 Car…

Carter Hickman has a concept for us…

The first step was putting it on a jig & cutting out the existing frame rails… We measured the JCG 67-69 Camaro Sub-Frame with ride height & it was a close enough match… The grafting of the sub-frame is going pretty smooth..

Engine choice! LS Mast Motorsports 416 with RPM Road Race transmission.. C&R 9” Ford third member… I know a lot of guys are not gonna like what we are doing their.. But you can't beat the HP & packaging from a LS engine.. It is gonna be pretty damm cool showing up to LS Fest in this car…

Wow Cris, you guys are fast, wasn't the SoCal challenge held only a week ago?!? Amazing how much is already done to it.
I love the rendering! Can't wait to hear all the Mopar guys whine about the hot little Mast motor you have in this machine. What oil pan are you running on this motor, it looks like a sheetmetal pan?

Am I the only one who cringes just a little, about taking a 440-6pack car and putting a chevy in it?

Nope. I do too but I understand the reasoning and respect the owner's wishes. Not saying you're not but I'm certain a lot of people are going to have the same reaction. This car is going to be cool as hell though. Love the rendering.

Josh- We are on a fast pace to get this car on the road.. I have a completion date in my head that I would like for this car to be completed.. The car will be a down & dirty re-do.. Nothing fancy.. just upgrades to do some testing of JCG components..
Oil pan is ATS pan that we used for mock up..
I knew the drivetrain choice for this car was not going to be popular.. but I had a pile of parts sitting in corner of the shop that I pulled out of 2007 Mustang that needed a new home.. Primary goal for this car is to test & race the crap out of it.. & have some fun..
If time permits & can find somebody to let me borrow a late model Hemi Engine.. I will fit it between the frame rails to see how it fits..

Ooops, there you have....any takes that will give Cris a Mopar engine? Don't hold your breath Cris. Do what you do. It may just be me, but I wouldn't care if you put a Honda 4-cylinder in it. Of course I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get my point. Just as long as it would be a bad a$$ car.

Motors are easy to come up with, especially now that Penske has switched. Looked at these when I was going to do a Cuda. I was going to give $8500 for one that was complete but needed a rebuild. To make them run well on the street you need to knock the compression out, change cams and add more stroke. They have reduced one to $5300 that needs a rebuild below
Here are 3 http://www.racingjunk.com/NASCAR-ARCA-ASA-HOOTERS/2713104/3-Dodge-R5P7-Engines.html
Most are around 3.230-3.30 on stroke and the redline is more like 9800 unless it is a restrictor motor.

I'm really looking forward to the final product. Cris and I spoke about it before, so no issue in saying it here; the biggest thing with cutting this car up is that it is a REAL 440/6, A833,Dana 60 Car. These types of things don't mean much to Chevy and Ford folks as it does to Mopar folks, and its not about "mopar or no car." The reason for this is simple to people who appreciate restoring "correct" classics. Mopars (unlike chevys and fords) were actually tracked, vin'd and registered by EXACT build specs. Mopar was lucky enough to have someone high up in management to save our registries since the beginning of the company to reference from. We can figure out the exact build options our cars came with and this is obviously very big in restoration world. To do something like this would be similar to just shoving it off a cliff for the sake of doing it. Were time not a factor, they could have sold this car for a considerable amount of money, bought a /6 3speed car with a 7 1/4 rear end, and no one would have cared about them sticking any suspension or motor combo in for the sake of speed.

Well not to side track Cris's thread all I have to say is you couldn't be more wrong in your statement. I'm a GM guy who looks at this the same way as you. Blame your Mopar folks for even letting this happen. What are ''they'' thinking. :lostmarbles: I to believe this should never happen I don't care what brand of car it is! It sucks but that's just the way it is. A lot of people don't look at it the way you or I do. To them its just a car.:topic:

The front suspension is compressed about 1 inch more than what ride height will be ... We want to make sure that we have plenty of room on the inside tires for turning radius..
Here is what flares will be looking like... but with less on the rear..
Estimate late July.. early August to get it on the road...

Inner wells are done, Wilwood pedals on firewall done, Got most of one of the front flare done, sub-frame connectors almost done, rear qtrs. are cut to begin flares, rear axle is getting floater ends welded this week, & the list keeps going... I think we should be done with the hard fab work in two weeks...

Got some rear stretch & flares going on today in the fabrication shop… We lowered the top of the opening to give the car a lowered effect to maintain ground clearance & suspension travel.. But we also pulled the lower bottom of the qtr so that we keep from kicking up rocks to cover the tire but also works as a deflector of air ..

In the last 6 months I have developed a working relationship with Borla Exhaust! This is something custom they do for JCG on the exhaust tubing & custom mufflers… What you see is 2.50 & 3.00 tubing .049 wall.. Next tubing kit they do for me will be 2.75..

It appears that you have skills in building cars. Here's my question; why would you build a car like that starting with a such rare example as an original 440 Six Pack car? You've removed so much of what made it special in the first place that you may as well have started with a Plain Jane slant 6 or 318 car, or better yet, a new Dynacorn body. In my opinion you've built a nice car but unnecessarily accomplished 2 additional things, you've ruined a piece of history, and thrown away a lot of the cars original value for no good reason.

Simple...that's what the customer wants and pays him for. As much as anyone may disagree, if the customer wanted a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower as a powerplant, Cris would have to ablige. I'm exaggerating here, but you get my point. Personal opinions and like doesn't pay his shops bills or salaries. But, what does pay is him doing exactly what the customer asks of you and making him happy. I'm sure we've heard of that old adage....If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't about me being happy or unhappy, more like disgusted, and while I am definitely a Mopar person, I also appreciate all makes. No, I wouldn't ever put a GM or Ford engine in a Mopar, but if someone else chooses too that's fine by me. However I do find it illogical to throw away money and a historical object for no substantial reason.
Think of it this way, would any of you GM guys cut up and modify a similar car starting with a nice original COPO, Yenko, ZL-1, etc. Camaro?

Scott although I agree with your position it is going to fall on deaf ears.
I've see plenty of 318 powered Challengers out here in CA that could go under the knife instead of this car but it was his car and in the end he paid for it and can do what he wants with it.

Next question, why would you do that? Yes some were in good condition. One was a Yenko one was a 68 Z/28 and a 70 1/2 Z/28.. a couple of true SS & RS cars and one friend did a ZL1.. This was back in the late 70's thru early 90's and they were turned into street race cars or drag cars. Plus a whole lot of circle track cars.. That's why. I also know of a lot of Mopars that were cut up to make drag cars ..
Let it go dude ;)

For record I am not a tree hugging Mopar purist since I visit this site and not a dozen Mopar resto forums, but I just gotta say in this day and age---why why why cut up a V code (440+6) car when as mentioned you can purchase a complete new body shell. I am building a pro-touring 71 Challenger, mini-tubbed, DSE Q-Link rear suspension, etc. so I do understand the desire, but mine is a car without any heritage, it has a state assigned VIN (factory VIN could not be proven), no build sheet, etc. and could never prove what it was since nothing is numbers matching.
I've been holding off from responding to this since Cris and his shop do excellent work (!!!) and I admire their projects and skills and also want to see what he is producing for Mopar suspension options, but the customer should have been given options including a repro body or a normal non-rare car. Sell it to someone at BJ who would appreciate the rarity, take home a trunk load of money and build it from a non-rare car..... oh yeah, too late! Seems like most guys who spend the money on a pro shop to build a car of this caliper just sell it in a few years anyway, without remorse or connection to the car once the photo shoots and spreads are over. Where's Sickfish, most of the Ring Brother's builds, etc. Most have gone over the auction block.
I have a hard time looking at the build knowing what was cut up. These cars are not on every corner. Production numbers of this car vs. a camaro are staggering low.
I dreamt of owning an original 440+6 car since I was 15 some thirty plus years ago but they were always at the time to much money or in bad shape since I lived in the midwest rust belt at the time.
Not stirring the pot, the customer can do what they want but a car like this is truly in the league of COPOs, Yenkos, Boss 302/429s, 427 Sideoilers, 455 TAs, GTO Judges, etc. and should have been saved. As far as people previously cutting up these cars, yes they did. Now they shouldn't. Everyone knows better.
Nuff said.
Can you put it back to original---please :)
Cris and crew-love your work! Top notch, just have a hard time with this one since there are so many other options out there.

This thread is proof that you can't make everyone happy.... It's really irrelevant (especially at this point) what the car started out as- this car is receiving a high quality build and will be a better car in every sense of the word when it's done. I think it's great that the owner is willing to do this- the car can be enjoyed now on the street, on the track, etc. and will pave the way for many more cars to be enjoyed just the same.
A plain stock car is boring. They're too "rare", "valuable", and in many cases too fragile, temperamental or unreliable to be driven on the street let alone track. All you can do is look at them, take them to a show (usually trailored)/ put them in a museum or trade them like stock at the next BJ/ Mecum auction.
Purists: Look at the bright side- there are more original parts available now to restore your cars with.
And what's the big deal with using another brand of engine? It's been going on for far longer than any member on this board has been alive. This isn't the first MOPAR to get an LS engine, and it won't be the last.

:catfight: if Dunn is driving this car it will be tough to beat, but by slapping the Mopar guys in the face by tearing apart the 440/6, you have put a target on this car, pure and simple. To beat it in a Mopar powered Mopar would be sweet justice....

I have been watching the responses over the weekend & holding back .. I knew this build would not be popular due to the fact of the cars original vin & trim tag.. but we have made the modifications with no regret.. This build.. is a joint build between Karl & I.. I have a personal investment of time & money on this 70 Challenger… There are designs & prototype components that I have not shared with the community till I proof their fit & function..
A car is only “ORIGINAL” once in its life time.. Starters, Alternators, Radiators, get replaced.. Motors get blown up.. Transmissions get swapped, Rear ends get ripped @ the spring perches due to heavy launched from drag racing.. Qtr panels or roof skins get replaced due to body rust.. Now I am going to talk about my restoration days.. I have restored some of the nicest 67 thru 69 Z28’s in the West Coast.. but also have been asked to build clones.. GM produced about 20K Z/28’s & now all of a sudden there are 40K Z/28’s.. There are some pretty talented people out there that can stamp engine pads with original numbers.. even seen it on the transmission cases with the rough texture on the sand casting.. Stamping date codes on rear-end tubes.. I know guys right now that have Trim Tags with vins & titles that have donor 69 shells to re-body a Camaro into a Z/28… Guys that convert their open eye Camaros into RS/Z28.. I have always told my customers of cars that I have restored that if they ever claimed that they car was original in drive-train.. & I knew that it was not.. I would disclose the truth .. I can keep going on about this subject.. but now we will get back to the Mopar.. But one of the main reasons I got out of restoring cars.. people were driving me nuts looking for a correct date coded alternator or starter..
This car is an Original 440/6 Pack car.. But certain parts of the drive-train were replaced & certain components were not the factory suspension components… Certain body panels were replaced.. We knew that when we got the car.. It was disclosed to us.. In the end.. we traded a car & got some cash.. Sold parts.. We did very well with that.. It justified the cost of all changes we have made to the car… This car will not be show car! It will be daily driven & raced to the boundaries the car will allow us..
To the Purist: I apologize for cutting up a Mopar that has a vin & trim tag that is a 440/6pack.. but in the end we are doing what we think is right for us.. We are building this car to meet what we like to do.. Build board line race cars that are daily driven! I just got lucky that we can build a car like that & have a driver that can complement the build…
To the supporters of the build: Thanks guys! Here are some pictures of the car finally on the ground…

Can you reproduce some of the factory assembly line paint markings just to piss people off a little more. That would be awesome.
Is this car getting a full cage? I'm a little curious on the choice to have subframe connectors that appear contoured to use the sheet metal floor as the top side, yet have such a massive cross member at the B-Pillar. I didn't fully read back through the plan so I'm probably just missing something.
Also, what's the plan for the interior?

The car will not be getting a full cage @ this time.. We will determine next year what the future enhancement will be for the car.. For the time being it will be daily driven & Autocrossed with testing on the road course.. We are trying to establish right now which will be Karl’s road course for the future.. & that one will get a full cage..
The interior will be stock panels with rear seat delete.. Sparco race seats with steering wheel, Fire system.. What else.. Oh! “CUP HOLDERS”
Here is what the underside structure looks like.. The Challenger has torque boxes just like a Mustang… I am really starting to favorite this type of design.. I can really tie in a chassis into the rocker panel & add some rigidity to structure of a car.. We have about 4.50 inches of ground clearance & everything is sucked underneath the car… Nothing hangs below the frame rails..
Please excuse the welding not being clean.. That will be done when the car gets disassembled & undercoated.. Trying not to waste any time.. Car need to be in the body shop late next week..

Also, what's the plan for the interior?
chop chop!
I don't care much for the engine, but then I don't much like make to make interbreeding like this regardless of the project.
I am a bit surprised at cutting up a V code car. Not from the purity stand point necessarily because this just increased the value of the remaining cars, but from a financial standpoint it doesn't make much sense to me. Even if it was sold at a fire sale price of $60k, which would have moved this thing in days, you could buy a Dynacorn body for $13k and have $47k for the rest of the build. Heck for that matter, you can buy complete, equivilent 72-74 E bodies for $8k and save even more and get all the detailed doo-dads for a build. The front end treatment would be no big deal either since it looks like it was all replaced with fiberglass anyway.
Since its not my car, it guess it doesn't really matter much what I think though.

A Dynacorn body for 13K.. What about all the glass, regulators, dash pcs, trim for the glass, roof rail trim, door latches, locks & a hell a lot more components.. Plus take into consideration that a dynacorn body does not fit panels very well ... The fabrication time to fit & gap.. Body work & paint.. Have you priced a paint job lately?
From a financial stand point.. A Dynacorn body was not a option...
Buying a 8k rollor car.. don't know what you are gonna get till you start peeling layers of the car apart... I can tell you horror stories of cars that have come in here that 40K was paid.. to tear the car apart and find layer of body filler or panels that were repaired with fiberglass filler.. Body panels replaced body work & paint.. it all adds up...
This car had a decent foundation for us to start.. & in the long run it will save some money on the build...

The pictures of the underside have me :headscratch: . I'm not used to looking at cars from that view, my jack doesn't go high enough!
I've got a couple questions about the frame rails that tie into the front subframe and the torque boxes.
Near the torque box, is the rail notched and than the TB is plated? TB, frame rail and cross member all tied in together...is that right?
The rail running through the floor, is that just welded to the floor pan top and bottom? Easy cheesy?
Car and the fabrication look great:thumbsup:
Who cares what the drama queens have to say about what you're building:catfight:
I've been through the same deal. I took a 1 owner, low mileage 1978 Cougar and made it a targa top and turned the trunk into a rumble seat, people were not happy!:lmao:

Cris,
One question. Will this car driven hard and appreciated by the customer or is it just a one shot deal and then sold?
If so, since you stated it was not all that original I am probably back on board. I still don't agree with cutting up a V code car since other options are easily available (no excuses here-there are other options) and if they can afford a pro-build they can afford other options (again no excuses on this no matter what is said---same goes for the LS motor-all motors are an air pump---a new 3G hemi can flow massive air probably better than an LS but more costly since less mainstream-pay up like all of us Mopar fools do :G-Dub: ) but I do want to see it through and see what you have in store for the final product. :D
Nice build by the way---even if it goes against the grain and my wish to save a car like this. I like the stance and attitude of the car!

Kudos to you for taking the time to talk about the other options people keep bringing up. Personally, I would have just ignored them, since you are building it for a customer.
I get that there are valuable cars out there, but if everyone saved those valuable cars we would not have the incredible aftermarket we have and great sites like this to see those parts be put on cars by great shops like yours. I am really looking forward to the end result.

We got the trunk & the rear bumper pcs in fiberglass fitted… Trunk was pretty good fit.. Bumper was not too bad with the new aluminum fabricated mounting brackets.. We also got some rear spoiler concepts that we are playing with.. Yesterday we simulated some wind tunnel drag thru Solid Works.. Also playing around with an idea on active aerodynamics..

I think the reasoning that Cris gave on why this car was modified versus a different car or evev a aftermarket body make sense to me. As I have gotten older, I realize that having a solid complete car to start with can save alot of time and money in the long run...
Anyway, I really like this car and the build quality looks top notch. Can't wait to see this one finished up and what it can do. :trophy-1302:

I love people telling you what should be done with your car, I'm still getting hate emails on my Mustang. All people will tell you is that the car was so valuable, how can you cut and modify it. The price of vintage Mopars is way down over a couple years ago, and when done right (which this car is obviously done right) I really don't think it hurts the cars value. I'm a big Mopar guy, and I know I'd love to have it.
Damn the torpedos!!!Full steam ahead!!!
Seriously not seeing the value in that Mustang. I wouldn't have a problem cutting that thing up.

Just completed this project… been thinking about this for some time & finally got around to making a set.. pedals that are adjustable from side to side & little adjustment from up & down.. This will should help with heel & toe.. Plus I wanted to increase the pedal ratio.. the Wilwood’s have a 6.25 ratio & now we have increased it to 7.25 ratio.. this should give a bit more leverage.. We will need to play around with M/C bore size to find one that is not very firm but will give us a small amount of travel for modulation..

We've been experimenting with various aerodynamic improvements on the 70 Challenger. In order to aid our development, we've generated a rough model of the Challenger center profile to study the characteristics of airflow over the body. By creating a virtual wind tunnel with the aid of CFD simulation software, we can evaluate how changes in spoiler angle, height, and profile--for example--affect the overall lift and drag generated throughout the body. While this model only gives us a partial representation of the aerodynamic behavior of the car, it is a great starting point in evaluating how certain changes alter the pressure zones and air velocity over and under the vehicle. As we develop a more comprehensive model of the car, more and more aspects of the car's behavior at speed will be realized.

Thanks Al! Should have some prototype pcs for your Camaro this week!
Cris you guys are cruising! Love the satin high tech look, looks AWESOME!.
It is not in the budget!
You need to make a set of Fake Hemi valve covers for that motor. The would be the icing on the cake.
My painter is on vacation.. :mock:

Let me do some testing first.. before I decide to do these pedals..
Pm me pice on a set, I would like them for my 69 Camaro build

All parts are made by JCG.. we grafted a Camaro sub-frame that we designed for our shop builds.. The sub-frame connectors were something we whipped up just for this project but are easy to make..
This is a car we built to test our suspension.. Yesterday it hit the ground!

Chris, this is a fantastic build. Sorry you had to take so much flak for it. Some people go out of their way to push their opinions onto you. So many of these cars were destroyed racing or on the street over the years that it should not even be a conversation in the first place.
I really like every little detail about this build, including the engine choice.
What bore size did you end up with on the master cylinders? and if you don't mind me asking what drove you to increasing the pedal ratio? Was it from track experience with blu balz?

Rod- I think that nick name just might stick! :D

We are @ 7/8 bores on the master cylinders & the pedal feels is stiff.. but that will change.. Late this week we will start testing on Hawk pads.. so if I can get the instant bite on the pads to leave room for some modulation on the pedal.. we will keep the 7/8 bores on the m/c.. but take into consideration that I have Wilwood Superlites 1.62/1.12/1.12 on the front calipers & 1.25 on the rear.. If I make a change.. it will be to 1.75/1.38/1.38 on the front calipers on W6A's.. Hawk does not make pads for these calipers.. but can get a custom set if required like I have for Blu Balz.. We increased the pedal ratio to gain some leverage which I can tell that I have gained when stopping the car... but all that information will be gained & tested later this week.. The brakes on Blu work great on stock pedal ratio.. only need to add brake ducts & now we are running Castro React SRF Racing brake fluid, Hawk Pads

To early to say.. but the car had great forward bite.. Slung it a bit from side to side.. On the video the car had no sway bars on yet.. Got BF Rivals on it.. RideTech shocks that have been re-valved to our specs.. 850 front springs & 600 on the back.. Need to set my pinion angle..
My experience with the 3 link on this car that we tested on another one here @ the shop had great corner bite.. you felt like you could roll on the throttle & hold without the car stepping out from you.. & that car had no rear sway bar..

Here an after thought when I was mounting the battery.. We are arunning a 17 lbs Braille Battery tucked underneth the dash.. So I had to figure a way to jump start the car or put a trickle charger.. We machined a brass bung to mount to the side of the block for ground that was close to our power source in the engine bay.. I am sure we could have done something better.. but weight is a big factor on this car.. didn't want to run cable all over the place..

Atleast this one is doing its intended purpose, moving!!

01-01-2014, 06:08 PM
We got about 500 miles on the car.. Car has very good street manners.. The short links on the 3 link rear suspension gives it a bit of a rough ride.. Still trying to find the right shock set-up in the rear.. The lower control arms have been hitting the inner wheel @ lock to lock on pass side.. We just re-designed a new lower control arm to fix that problem.. Fabricate them next week.. Gonna change the cam in the motor.. Don't like where the power band comes on & the car bucks from 1k to 3k on the rpm while street driving.. Karl will not like that.. Installing the same cam as we have in Blu Balz..
In two weeks we take it out to Buttonwillow for its first shake down run on the road course.. So I got a list of about 10 items I need to fix before it goes on the big track.. Karl will be driving it for the first time that weekend.. & we also have Danny Popp coming to SoCal to give me driving instruction on the road course & work with Karl on improving some of his driving technique plus do some big track testing for the Challenger & Blu Balz..

This weekend we just done testing the Challenger as if we were taking it to a event.. The car was on the road course for the first time & got one of the best guys to come out a do some testing for us on the road course plus give me some driving instruction... Danny Popp! In 2013 while attending events in the mid-west I was fortunate enough to become friends with Danny & asked him late in the year if he would come in to So Cal to help do some evaluating on the Challenger which has all JCG front & rear suspension.. & let's just say that I am finally relived that I have finished testing this prototype that was built into this car.. Danny drove the car to it full capability & asked him to spare it no mercy! The car performed well for it first outing on the road course.. Still have a few small bugs to dial out but we are close.. Karl also came into town to drive the Challenger for the first time & when I dropped him off this morning @ the airport was very happy @ the results of the Challenger!
When we left Oxnard Friday morning.. The car had 502 miles on it.. We drove it from the shop to Buttonwillow & put about 280 miles on it round trip plus ran it all day on all sessions that we were allowed.. Then we Auto-X on Saturday all day only giving the car about 30 minutes break between runs.. Karl, Danny, Casey & I were driving it all day.. Drove the car back to the shop.. Car has about 960 miles on it now! It never was loaded on the trailer & survived the abuse of this weekend.. Only made an adjustment to the shocks, panard bar & checked tire pressures when required..
Danny has named the car "BARNEY" Big, Fat, & Happy!

Cris congrats on getting the car out! What is your driving impression compared to Blue? I could be wrong, but was the car loose in the vid? I'm sure D Popp makes all cars look loose, lol! Also, what motor did you guys put in there, another LS7?
What app/vid equipment did you have for the graphics in the video?

Tom- If I post the video of me driving you would get bored compared to Danny's.. LOL
Car weights about 3260.. The 416 LS3 is making about 600 hp!
Man it looks fast in that video Cris, any idea on the current HP/weight?
1.3 g's on street tires! BFG Rivals.. :thankyou:

Thanks Ron! Danny drove both cars.. Blu was lose & the Challenger was tight.. We took out all the high & low speed compression out of the rear with all the rebound.. The Challenger had more forward bite & the front was working good! All changes that need be made will complete the sorting of the car.. Danny stuffs a car into a corner & deals with the consequences coming out.. The term "lose is Fast" applies to Danny but experience laying down stripes on the road course & getting the car side ways & catching it was the great thing to see in the passenger seat!
We are sticking with the LS3 this year in the Challenger.. The transmission on the Challenger has a ZR-1 gear set in it that are like a close ratio Muncie.. 4.11 gear in the rear.. Danny prefers this set up for road course.. In 6th gear wear are 3k on the rpm @ 80 mph on the freeway..
The lap timer we got is a Aims Solo that Larry Woo hooked us up on.. The camera is also from Aims..

We got a new lower control arm that will now clear up to 315's on the front! The first design was creating tire rub when we went full lock to lock & had to many rack n pinion limiters.. I really did not want do a fabricated control arm but was the easiest way to get clearance..
The spindle also changed.. When we welded the caliper mounting brackets they distorted a bit.. Did not like that.. so we redesigned the caliper mount bracket to bolt directly to the machined part of the spindle plus it holds the Wilwood radial mount caliper.. It interlock for less flex on caliper mount which translates to better pedal feel.. Plus we took some weight out of it..Waiting for SKF bearing packs from Van Steel & we will bolt these on next week..

This past weekend had Danny Popp come into SoCal for some test & tune on the Challenger plus to give me some driving instruction on the road course.. It was a great weekend of gaining knowledge & making sure the changes we made to the car worked.. We are close to having the car dialed in.. but still chasing some very minor things.. But the one thing that I am very proud of for the JCG gang as Danny refers to us now.. is the durability of our car preparation.. I told Danny not to spare the car any mercy & to run it as hard as he could within his comfort zone.. The Challenger survived!! Best time he knocked down was 1.59! We ran the snot out of the Challenger plus Auto-X in two days.. My driving abilities on the auto-x are showing thanks to Casey's coaching for the last year.. I am barely getting comfortable on the road course but was able to knock down a 2.12. Practice will bring my times down & confidence! In car video of Danny driving.. I can't believe how fast he down shifts a car plus moving his feet like a type writer!

I just finished reading this whole thread. I am amazed at the level of fabrication on this car.
I have to admit if I had the money, I more then likely would build my 68 charger pretty close to how you built thism challenger, to be driven.
About the only thing I would of not done is, put an ls engine in it. All aluminum wedge for me please.. Yes I am a Mopar guy true and true but, all the factory number stuff, and original this and that crap, you can keep it. Sitting around a show making sure people don't touch your trailer queen, Please.. BORING!!!!
By chance do you have any more pics of the front spoiler, and rear wing??

:BlahBlah: :BlahBlah: I thought you just read the whole thread. People have already complained, cried, sobbed, moaned about it and it's old news. MOPAR guys it's not the end of the world. Besides, if you owned a shop, you would have done exactly what Cris did....put an LS engine in it because doing what a customer wants pays his bills. Here is a little in car video of this past weekend @ Laguna Seca! I was testing my skills on "Loose is Fast".. This was one of the most fun events that I have driven! The cork screw was a blast.. Bruce Cambren gave me some advise on front straight away coming over the hill where I kept lifting.. I managed to put 117 mph with his advise when he clocked me! On my last run of the day I was able to sueeze in my best time of the day 1.55.. Special thanks to Danny Popp & Casey Cronin for teaching me how to drive.. I promise you guys I will get faster with time.. & to my good friend Karl Dunn.. you have allowed me to live something I only thought would be a dream! Thank you Karl for letting me drive the Challenger this weekend..

Vid is very cool Cris, I think they are the best teaching aids. Teachs you where you hit the breaks early, and got on the throttle late. etc. etc.

Thanks for the ride along, that was awesome!! My hands started sweating just sitting here watching you drive the course.
What I liked was watching you step the pace up every time you caught up to another car on the track, rabbit and the hare kind of deal. I do the same thing, when you see someone you are chasing down, you try just a bit harder to catch them.
Question about the passing rules, about the 15 minute mark you came up no a black import type car...and struggled just a bit while waiting until his passenger finally pointed you by. I thought for a second you were gonna pass him a few times then backed off. What exactly are the passing rules at these events? Do you have to wait for a point by? Or do you have to wait for a passing zone? Or both?
Looked fun, would have loved a chance to drive on that track.

Glad you enjoyed the ride along! I never thought that I would be driving like this in such quick time especially passing cars.. The highlight of this session was passing Matt Alcala! We have been bringing in Danny into SoCal for the last two months not only to shake down the car but to instruct me & Karl.. I ran the car with no adjustments all weekend.. just adjusted tire pressures! Car ran like a champ..
We only had four areas that we could pass on.. So I tried to stay within those areas of passing plus was driving within my comfort zone.. This session was my sloppy one of them all.. by the end of the day I had better lines.. One of the main reasons I drove the car hard was because I had confidence in it! I rode shot gun with Danny many times when we were doing our shake down runs that taught me what the Challenger could do..
Rumor has it that JCG has a new addition to their crew!

If you don't mind sharing (and I understand if you don't)
How much does your upright weigh with brake bracket included ?
That LCA looks massive, how much does it weigh and what thickness metal is it constructed from ? The pivots look like they are sized for a stock configuration style bushing ? what are you using - delrin, poly, or rubber ?
I have always loved a proper Mopar - some of their styling was the best. Love how easily you created that front flare its massive and yet not that noticeable. Purple is a great color too.

Uprights with caliper brackets are about 11 lbs..
Lower control arm I have not got a weight & 1/8 plate.. The pivots are our own delrin bushings with bushings.. heavy? yup.. but strong!

For the last two months this car has been put thru the test.. Attending as many open track events that I can plus doing some Auto-X events.. Car now has about 2500 miles on it with half of those being very hard track miles.. Car is working great... Making adjustments & changes as I learn what the car likes.. Gear changes, tires, brake ducting, completed the interior, & the list goes on..
Next phase for the car is to pull motor & make some changes.. Ditching the manual brakes.. going with Master cylinder & booster from a 2008 Z06 Corvette.. Get the car ready for USCA event in Fontana & then headed to the Mid-West for some events out there..
Action shot from this past weekend @ Good Guys Delmar!

Yes sir! But also has alot of spring in it.. For small tight courses we were loosen up the car so that we could get it to turn.. When we have road course events & big Auto-x we tighten it up..
Another thing we have been working on is getting forward bite.. In this picture you can see that we are putting the power down!

Cris why you ditching the manual brakes???
Cris@JCG
04-09-2014, 12:04 PM
Manual brakes take more effort to stop a car.. It is nice when you have one master cylinder to control the front & another to control the rear with the capability to bias out in the cab of the car but we are giving up time on the road course by not being able to go deep into turn.. Most forms of racing use a pedal assembly like what I have in the Challenger but you have to find the right combination of bore size in the master cylinders plus friction material on brake pads.. The power booster will aid in stopping the car with less effort on the foot plus you will not be as tired from a 30 minute session on the road course.. Another key factor that will help on the Auto-X will be that with a tap on the front brakes.. it will help set the weight on the nose & help rotate the car around cones.. Our C5 Vettes are spoiling us with their braking capabilities! But most important of all.. Karl wants power brakes on all his cars..
We are also looking @ setting up two cars here @ the shop with a Antilock Braking System ABS M4 from Bosch Motorsport.. hoping that these will systems will find their way into Blu Balz & the Challenger.. Big benefits from this on the track!

I tried running my cars with manual brakes since they are lighter and much easier to setup dual M/C's and much easier to package as well. I figured it would be fine since almost all race cars use manual brakes even the big heavy stock cars etc.
But, yeah, they sucked. Sucked for street driving and sucked for track driving. Very difficult to be smooth when you had to put so much muscle into the brakes. I ended up mounting a hydraboost with a bracket that uses dual M/C's, but the whole contraption is almost 16" long and quite heavy and would not package in almost anything but a specially built tube frame (like my car).
To be happy with manual brakes on a street car I think you need to be <2800 lbs. and like Chris said you still need a perfect mix of bore sizes and pad friction.

Okay - I seriously don't get putting power brakes on a car -- to me that's a bandaid for a poor braking system.
It takes no effort to stop the Mustang or tap the brake to set for turn in.... and this car has little tiny rotors and calipers (2 piston front and single piston Corvette style rears). The Mustang takes effort to DRIVE but doesn't take any leg effort to stop or slow down. Coming from a guy that used to be in the brake business -- I'm very surprised at this issue.

I don't get it either. I ran my car at 3500 lbs with me in it with manual brakes on the street and track (1500 total miles) for almost 2 years and loved it. Never will go back to power brakes.
I just hated the "mush" of the boosted brake cars I did drive.

I'll jump in on the f*ck power brakes bandwagon. When I owned the Chicane-LM Camaro (known now as BluBalz) it had manual everything- door locks, steering, brakes, & windows. I had not ever had a better braking or feeling car than that setup with the Alcon calipers; and it was not a heavy pedal press to get the vehicle stopping very fast.
Only one that came close to it was a 68 Camaro with a Hydratech boosted unit on it that Paul helped us setup. That thing was worlds better than any vacuum assisted car I've driven.
Ok. Back to lurk mode.
