View Full Version : 70 Chevelle - My First Car
Well,
I thought I would go ahead and start my build thread. As the title states, this is my first car that I bought back in 1981. My Dad found it when he was selling insulation to a guy. We bought it one afternoon for $150. Yes, the price is correct. I think I got a good deal.
This picture is after new paint, new interior, wheels and tires. When I frist got it, all it needed was a clutch, exhaust and interior.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/theshow_zpsac2f9f13.jpg
After driving through high school and trade school, the wife and I decided it was time to start our complete frame off build.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/frameoff_zps885e2936.jpg
Got the body off the frame and the wife lost her garage. For more years than she ever dreamed.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/shelistgarage_zps8151bc29.jpg
Here's the roll and pleat job my Dad did when I first bought the car. Seats are still in the attic of the garage. they would probably clean up good to this day.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/upholstery_zps2bde30f6.jpg
As I started building it back, I initially installed H.O. Racing Specialty suspension parts and rear disc brakes from a 1979 Trans Am, KYB shocks and every nut and bolt was brand new.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/goingback_zpse6ce1611.jpg
I used the original engine block to build a 383 and a turbo 400 trans. the original trans was a three speed on the column.

So after life got in the way for more years than I care to say, kids, job, HEEP,

Right on! What are the plans for it? Just re-assemble and drive? Any other upgrades?

Kevin, yes this car has the history. I am the second owner have all the paperwork somewhere here at the house, and just love this car. I did not have any idea what a Chevelle was when Dad took me to see it. I was a 15yr old just looking for a car. That day started a life long bug that just consumes me sometimes.
Dug, Yes I have some plans. Right now the frame is getting modified and I have a LQ9 and a T56 to go in it. Brakes are getting upgraded from 4-wheel drum originally, to 4-wheel disc with stock components, to 4-wheel disc with 14" rotors and Corvette calipers.

.... We bought it one afternoon for $150.
Now that's a deal anytime. Even with the car being 11 years old at that time...that was a deal :trophy-1302: :G-Dub: About time you started a build thread Heep. Let's go baby!! :popcorn2:
Thanks, Marcus
Now after many years as I stated, we have started a complete tear down and going the same direction as before, just with updated parts. No, the wife has not figured out how much this has cost. Please don't tell her.
Here is the rolling chassis before the teardown.

Great build & family history on this one! My first car was a 500.00 primered 68 SS 4spd Chevelle..
Keep us updated.
Alright, here is where I stand today. Ordered the HPI frame kit and I have it installed.

All this is welded in. I now have the ABC Performance rear frame narrowing kit that I am currently in the process of installing. I'll get pictures of this later.

I loved reading and seeing the history of your Chevelle. The vintage Pepsi cup took me back to my childhood. Its also great seeing the next caretakers getting involved early. I will definitely be watching this build. So far you are headed the same direction my 70 Chevelle Malibu is headed.

Frame is looking very good so far, love these Chevelles, great to see a young kid actually interested in working on cars, that's cool, keep pics coming.
Ok guys. I need some idvice. At this point when I finish the frame. I'm ready for the body to go back on to fit engine and trans. Should I go ahead and have the body blasted or wait till later when the body will come off again?
What is the normal sequence on things like this?

Heep, I guess it would be okay to just have it blasted. But, I wouldn't finish anything, be it paint, powdercoat, etc. until it's time to avoid any mishaps.

Cool project!
Heep, I guess it would be okay to just have it blasted. But, I wouldn't finish anything, be it paint, powdercoat, etc. until it's time to avoid any mishaps.
I'm thinking I need to go ahead and blast myself. I really just don't want to take the body off more than I need to. The HEEP was a little different that I did not need to do anything to the chassis. So once the body was on, it stayed on.
The way I see it right now, I blast the body , then put back on the frame. then set the driveline, and that way I can do body work and build everything else. Then blow it apart, paint, powder and reassemble to full build. Sounds simple when you write it down. Should be done in about a week. :lmao:
Of course, I'm no RShop or Ironworks. To bad I didn't find Gregweld on ancestry.com, or I could call uncle greg for help.:lmao:

Nice project. Its looking great.
Thanks WayneZ.
Just thought I would give a little update. Worked all weekend on the rear frame section. This kit is from ABC Performance. He really has thought this through. I am really impressed with what strength was added with this kit.
Here is the first and main cut of the frame. The outer plate is removed.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5311_zpsa9e012c7.jpg
Here is how I braced the frame to hold everything in place.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5312_zpscff61a3e.jpg
This is a 3/16" solid plate that is welded into the frame section.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5315_zps7416a4f8.jpg
Here is the top view showing how thick the frame is now.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5316_zps22839165.jpg
Now this is the added inner "C" that goes to the inside. You can see now that it looks like a replacement rear section that one might add if doing a complete rear sectioning.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5318_zps090aef95.jpg

That is the plan. If I can get the chassis done, the next step is the wheel wells. Stepping out of my boundries on this. We'll see what happens when I band the tubs.

I spy our k brace kit installed in your frame! Nice job, any more pics?
Also, ABC only lists their mini tub pieces as 64-67, I assume they worked for you or they now have a 68-72 version? I figured that section of the frame was very similar from 64 up......

Tyler, yes you can see that brace kit. Very well thought out kit. thanks for coming up with it.
Here are some more pics. If you look at the back you will see where I got a little over zealous with the disc sander.

Cool thanks for posting the pics! You came up with a really neat jig there.....I am going to keep that in the back of my mind!
Keep us updated, looks real great!
Just a little update. Finished up both sides of the frame. The right was a little tougher than the left. I talked with Tony at ABC and he said he has seen the problem I had. It tested my amateur fabrication skills to the max. However, the good thing about metal is you can add more and make it smooth again.
Here is the finished frame. There are a couple of welds that need to be finished on the bottom.

Tore down the frame jig.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5322_zps3cf40092.jpg
Cleaned up the floor and the garage. Took a while. Got the frame back in and turned over, ready for the few welds on the bottom that need to be finished.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5327_zpsc020c3d7.jpg
Her is one of the plates that ABC provides in their kit. It finishes out the frame rail and strengthens it at the control arm mount.
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/IMG_5329_zpsca4dec4b.jpg
That's about it for now. I hope to finish up the welding this week. I had planned to have the body blasted before I put the frame under it. I think I am going to wait. I'll mount the body, do the tubs in the rear. and get everything done and then go back to blasting the body.

Dug, in my mind too many. However, I was trying to learn to TIG while installing the HPI kit.
I think I had about 24hrs in the front portion, and about 30hrs in the rear.

Just a quick update. It rained this weekend, so I was able to do some work and finally finished the frame. Got all the body mount rings that are included in the HPI kit installed and then the braces that are from ABC welded in.
Then, I got to clean out the catch-all. The body. Put a bunch of thingins in the attic of the garage to get it out of the way. My son was excited that he can help now that all the welding is done. Going to be a busy week for work, but maybe, just maybe, I can get the body back on the frame sometime this week. If not, it will be Sunday before I will have some time... no wait, that is Mother's Day. That will not happen. HAHA

Great job. Congrats! Looks like your son is having fun with the build as well!
Keep us posted.
Thanks everyone. Yes, my son is enjoying it. He's learning stuff and I'm enjoying teaching him. We got out to install the muscle car pan on the LQ9 tonight so we can start the process of setting the engine and trans. The body is not setting down completely on the frame yet due to the what I call the drain holes hitting the tubes I installed. I'm sure a little bit of trimming will get it to work right. Maybe tomorrow night I'll tackle that.
I'm also looking at what Stielow did on his engine mounts on his latest project. I'm kind of leaning to copy him and use factory type mounts. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I tried to send him a PM, but his box was full. He's probably busier than a one legged man running a marathon. I have the brackets and the solid mounts from the previous engine that was installed.

So no one has an opinion on the engine mounts?
Should I just do the norm on plates and standard SBC mounts?

Jeep I think either way will work just one is more labor, Mark did it that way because he need the room?? I would just put the standard frame stands in with regular mounts?
Oh and where's the up dates???
well, not alot of progress this weekend. Worked on getting all the body mounts lined up and bolted down. Evidently, after sitting for all those years and all the welding I did on the frame, things have moved a little. looks like I am going to have to grind out one or two of the holes to get this thing bolted up.

Wow, didnt realize how long it has been since I updated. Well, I finally got the guts to cut the tunnel out. Getting ready to set the engine in the frame. I ended up with Camaro mounts for the engine. I'll see how it works out. So my son an I went out tonight and got to work.

My son is 9, and is really getting into my build as well. At the end of the day, all our kids want is time with us...no matter what we are doing. Building cars with them is merely a bonus. We do baseball, cars, and dirtbikes, in no specific order.
Cherish these moments is correct.
Glad you finally cut the tunnel, by the way.
You sir are correct. Our boys need their dads. I was just on the phone with my mom about my dads tools. They are mine if no one else in the family wants them. I remember some good times in the garage watching him and learning.
By the way. I did get the engine set in today. I bet no one on here has ever used the tool I used. I'll post up tomorrow. About to head out for our anniversary. 26 years this past Thursday.

Well, like I said, I got the engine at least set in the frame. Had a rather unique tool that I used, as the frame was set a little closer to the door than I had planned.
Anyway, I had rented this for another project here at the house, and thought I would seize this time to use it.

So this is the outcome of the event. Rather painless in setting it in. As you can see it is jut resting on the pan and the trans has the mount in. I am playing with the idea of using Camaro mounts so you can see them next to the stock Chevelle towers. I will need to see what I can do on this. I think engine setback is good, let me know if I am wrong here guys. Let me know if there are any other pic that are needed to make that decision.

Heep, that is a rather unique tool. LOL!! If you set the engine back, are you gonna redo the firewall to accomodate the engine? Also, why won't you just get some LS adapter plates?
Alright guys, I need some advice. I have purchased the GM conversion pan from a member here and got the engine set in. Right now, I have a 3.7 degree angle front to rear on the engine so it will clear the steering linkages. Now, I'm also more forward of where I would like to place the engine as it is about three inches from the firewall. The one thing holding me back right now is the trans mount. I will need to see what I can do to make it move farther back.
I'm ok with using the normal Ls swap mounts or fabricating whatever I ned to make it work with the camaro mounts.
So what is the optimal angle for the engine to set in? Would I be better off to purchase the Mast pan to make sure everything clears properly? Do I need to set the engine back further than the three inches to the firewall?
Thanks,
HEEP

Here's a pic of the steering box clearance. I basically set mine back as far as possible during mockup. Of course I had my headers installed, and I put the steering box on, to make sure all my stuff was covered. Having your oil pan on will be mandatory to ensure your golden on fitment. I'm using the Holley pan. It's about 1/4" off the top of the crossmember, and I also have a ton of clearance on the sump of the pan to the crossmember. I researched this a lot. Some people reported that they had to raise the engine, in order to get tie rod to pan clearance. My engine is as low in the car, and as far back in the car as possible with a stock firewall, and I have no problems anywhere.
Now I have to go update my build thread with new pics. I finally got my body on my chassis!

Scott, thanks for the update on this. I just posted in your thread. I was just looking at your mounts, and was thinking of doing something similar. I created the normal mounting plates today and bolted them on. Trying to decide what to do here. I really hate to spend more money on another pan.
I am going to have to come up with a modification to the trans crossmember to get the engine moved back as far as yours. This should not be an issue, as I will just have something lasered out to weld together. I am running the HPI Customs frame kit, and I think it is designed for autos.

Scott,
I was looking at your build thread and saw that you had the stock frame stands bolted on backwards, then I realized you were making your own mounts. While having your engine that far back has it's advantages, you will run into problems if you ever want to remove the transmission without removing the engine. The engine needs to tilt down quite a ways to remove a trans, and with the head being only 1/2" away from the firewall, there won't be any room for the engine to tilt down in the rear.
Heep,
Cool build. I've had my GTO since 1985, so I can relate to long term projects! I like your idea of using the Camaro engine mounts and making custom frame stands. My engine is mounted using stock Chevelle frame stands with poly mounts and adapter plates. I think I am getting a lot of vibration from the engine through the poly mounts.

yep, 2.5 worked for me ('65). But,what is most important is the drive shaft working angles on either end are equal, or close to it. So, ride height and rear end type (pinion height and angle) affect it.

Great story and project, you will get it done just keep at it and save your pennies!
alright, thanks for the quick replies. Just verified what I thought was correct. So measuing the door jamb, it is 2.7* pointed down in the rear. Measuring the engine on the valley cover, I am at 5.5* pointed down in the rear. I think I will let it stand there. I can now start measuring and drawing out the frame mounts for the engine mounts. I'll get that done and get the metal next week.
So here is what I have been up to the last couple of days. I had to modify the HPI trans mount. It wouldn't let me slide the engine back where I wanted it at. Tyler was very helpful, send a couple of tube mounts for me to use, but I decided to go a different route. Had some metal cutout and I added it to the crossmember.

Thanks guys, It was good getting out there and getting my hands dirty. Therapy is what I call it. I'lll box that area in when I pull the engine out again. I'm sure it will be out and in a few more times.:)
yes, the longer tabs were needed for the twisting of the trans mount. I will probably hold it in with 3 bolts on each side just for good measure.
So after engine mounts, I guess I'll tackle the trans tunnel and firewall smoothing.
Thanks,

Well, It's time for a little update. Got the engine mounting completed. Kind of like a milestone with swapping the engine out to the late model stuff.
First I took a little tip from FAB53 and built a hanger. This was to get the engine off the spacers I put in when I got it set where I needed it.

Thanks for the props. As for the rear end, it's just a 12 bot posi with 3:73 gears. Air ride suspension with a H/O racing Specialties rear bar. It's probably over kill at 1-3/8" :secret: I will just have to see.
So I finally got to work on the ride today. Got my nerve up to do the rear tub cutting. And of coarse, I hit a road block. I'm cut all the way through to tub itself, except down to the lower area of the tubs front and rear.

Bill, what rear tire width are you shooting for? Glad to see you making progress.
Scott, I am shooting for as wide as I can get. 335 would be nice, but I am not sure at this point. I figure that I have spent the money on the frame work and now the tubs need to be done. I'll get as much tire back there as I can. I have been told that stock can handle 315, but I have not measured anything at this point.
By the way, good to hear from you. Haven't seen anything on your car lately...

Yeah stock tubs with a rolled lip, or in my case a cut back lip, 315's will go. There is 14" of real estate available with stock tubs.
I'm chasing a gremlin right now with mine. Been working on trying to fix since April, as time has allowed me. Long story short, I started with GM electronics, and have moved to the Mast M90 setup, but there's a problem we can't find. I had the owner of Vengeance Racing in my shop, and we still can't pinpoint what's up.
My painter wants the car running. No shell this time, no parts this time. The whole car running. He's done our ISCA jobs through the years, and is getting tired of painting "parts". It's the whole car or nothing, running and drivable.
It's fine by me, but Geesh, if my engine woes didn't exist, I'd be done by now.
I've bought everything I need to finish, except gauges and a steering wheel. I've spent some major dough this year on the car.
I'll get some updates in, as soon as we get car started. Hopefully that happens tomorrow.
Well, part of it is out. Now to move everything in. problem I have now is Tony at ABC is on the Power Tour. would really love to order some tubs from him. I guess I can wait another week. HAHA

Ouch! Rust is one of those four letter words that your not supposed to say. Keep your head up bill, and stay at it. A little at a time, and your done before you know it.
Alright, so I have been pricing metal and found a great deal with Tony G at ABC performance. Before I do the order, I have a question, and I asked this before about the car. Should I have the body blasted before I install this quarter panel? Right now the task is inner and outer wheel tubs and the quarter. Not sure of the other side just yet. I thought it would be better to do one side at a time. Thoughts?:drowninga:
No one has an answer for me? Should I blast first and then install the quarter? Leaning toward installing first, but I need to make sure.

Another option: cut out most of the quarter to get open area for the blaster to get in there, then do the new quarter afterwards. Just a thought.
Good to see you making some progress Bill.
Aaron, thanks for the input. I hadn't thought about doing it that way. At this point, I would have to pull the body back off the frame and would be concerned about movement without the quarter on it. Just thinking out loud here. I might take the idea from Kevin l and buy a small blaster and clean it up at the house.
By the way, when I rode with you in Nashville, did you have a goPro running from the back seat/ If so, I would love to see that video.

Bill, I agree with what Aaron said. If your going to remove a quarter panel there is no sense in blasting it to throw it out. Clean up the metal behind it and treat it. Weld in some bracing to keep the twist down.
As far as your tubs go, I would give it a shot. It sounds like your thinking of replacing them anyway, so practice with the bad one and see what you think. You might be surprised with how you do!
Good luck and glad your moving forward!!

Bill, just cut out the bad areas of metal, leave all the upper and front and back structure of the qtrs and you will still have lots of strength to keep it from moving around. As stated it doesn't make sense to blast metal that will go to the scraper. Glad to see its coming along. As long as you do "something" on each day it will get done.
So do I need to put the door on before I start the quarter replacement for line up purposes?

So do I need to put the door on before I start the quarter replacement for line up purposes?
Well you will want them on at some point. Yes you need them to line up the qtrs, I like to have all the sheet metal on at some point before I start to weld anything permanently. It's much easier to move stuff around before you final weld.
If your using the org doors and still have the org qtrs on line them up first to old quarters as this will help you determine if your new quarters are going on in the org spot.
Same goes for you have new doors but still have the org qtrs on.

Thanks Rick. that was what I had in my mind. I'll get the door down and start lining it up with the new hinges I got also.
Well, I actually got out there and got a little done. First, I got everything out of the boxes. Bought some new hinges from AMD....
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/IMG_7188_zpsff3c8d7b.jpg (http://s115.photobucket.com/user/HEEP_2006/media/CHEVELLE/IMG_7188_zpsff3c8d7b.jpg.html)
Got a RH quarter panel, and outer tubs....

Also got a set of the inner fender tubs from ABC performance. Tony does a good job on these.... There is no way I could have done this.

So after RicKD answered my question about the door, I winched it down from the attic and got it installed.

Anyway, I actually have a day off tomorrow. All I have to do is take the kids to school, fix a water heater, meet a guy about windows for the house, pick up my daughter and get her to a game, and then get my son and take him to practice. Hmm..I wonder how long I will get to be in the garage.. HAHA

Keep at it, every little thing you can do is one more thing done. I won't touch my car tomorrow but my dad is dropping off a bunch of stuff at the blaster for me. More checked off the list.

Keep at it Bill. Out of everything I've done to my car during the last 3 years, getting my gaps right was the biggest pain that I've experienced. By far!
And mine aren't SEMA perfect by any means. That door will line up, it just takes 3 hands, and a lot of patience. You've got this!
Ok, so a little more work today. Actually got some time in the garage today. Water heater not fixed, but the kids got to where they were supposed to go and the contractors showed up, and started the quote process.
So here is what I got. First, this happened. I'm gonna need a little help here guys to put this back togther. Actually did this yesterday getting it out of the window area. Yes, I screwed up big time.

Yes sand the filler out, next for the led you can either grind it out not the best way or use a torch and melt it out still not great! Either way you have either led dust from grinding or led fumes from the burning it out. The torch will go faster, you don't need much heat to get it to flow out.

yes most qrts by the rear body panel have deep spot welds but your do look extra deep, anyway you need to drill them out just like all the others.

Thanks Rick.... You are really a great help on this. I guess now, I really will be putting in electric windows. HAHA
I'm just going to continue to find those spot welds and keep drilling them out, and will get there eventually. As for an earlier comment about haveing the area blasted, I don't see and rust inside the area where the window is. I'm replacing the outer and inner tub, so that takes care of the rust that I have.
I did find a little hole on the drivers side at the bottom of the window. The known areas that rust. I wish there was a way to put a drain in that area so that water does not just sit there.
Not really an update, but I think I may have found some rear calipers.

Scott, they are about 18-20" long. they go on a final drive brake for a large Komatsu machine. Not sure which one just yet. I am working with our Reman facility on a special project at this point, and those get rebuilt here. Kind of impressive for the process here.
Got two weeks left of a six week stint here. Really missing my family at this point.

Wow six weeks that's a long time to be away from your family, how far away are you, do you get to go home on the weekends?
rick, they are 21" overall length. The pistons are " and 2.75" diameter and are six piston. They are for a Komatsu HD785 mining dump truck.
As for being away from the family, yes, it has really gotten to me this week. I do get to go home on Friday, and then return on Monday around 11. About 4.5 hrs away from home. Ready for a home cooked meal every weekend. I've had two Japanese men here with me for most of the time. One went back to Chattanooga to discuss my new roll within my company. The other is still here with me. He doesn't speak English as well as the other. Communication has been fun. He does love my truck, and Cracker Barrel. HAHA

Ok guys, finally back at it and kind of stuck with this quarter panel removal thing. My first thought was to cut every spotweld out and then install the new one. However, it looks like there may be some that will not be able to get to until the old is off.
so, today's question is, do I just cut this thing off close to the seams and then go back to the spotwelds? Or do I continue my first thought process?
Also, in this picture, this is where most body rot resides. I'm lucky on mine that there is very little, but in looking at the future, how can I keep the rot away? Has anyone ever put a drain in this area? Did it work?

Bill, funny that you mentioned putting a drain there. My painter and I, talked about doing this for a while, but instead we settled on using POR 15 in these areas, for future rust control. As you know, the water gets in, and can't get out. I had a descent idea of using a stainless 5/16" tube with a flare on it, similar to brake line, and shooting it down and through the trunk pan, but I chickened out, and bought some POR 15.
These areas on my car were gone. The previous owner used steel wool, or it could have been an S.O.S pad, and covered it over with good ole Bondo. :headscratch:
Let us know what you end up doing.

I would think adding a drain is introducing the chance of more rot,if the Window is sealed correctly and/or flush mounted you shouldn't have a issue. Another tip from a detailer friend of mine was after your done washing the car take some compressed air and blow out any water that does try to sit in that area. He uses a leaf blower believe it or not, less pressure on a larger surface then a line right from a air compressor
Ok. So I will look into the drain or not later. So can anyone comment on the first question on my post today?

Bill, I just cut the outer skin off first then I go after the spot welds. Yes you will get into some crazy positions to weld back on the panels.
thanks Rick.... I will start today by cutting out the panel. I did hone my skills on spot cutting. HAHA
There is a lot of rust in the outer wheel house. It started just falling out as I was cutting the welds.
Well, I finally got a little time in the garage today. Amazing what an hour or two and a cut-off wheel and body saw will do.

Well, I finally got a little time in the garage today. Amazing what an hour or two and a cut-off wheel and body saw will do.

Looking good Bill! I am a bit late on the helping end, and you have some great help already. On my latest Chevelle I used an air hammer with a cutting bit to get the bulk of the quarters off, then I used a grinder and "weakened" the spot welds in some of the softer areas then used a chisel bit on the air hammer and broke off the remaining panels. Your doing great, keep up the good work!
Chris, Thanks for the props. The only hold up at this time is the time...... getting in the garage to work on this ting seems to be a never ending battle. I am hoping to get in there late tonight after my son's soccer game.
I thought I would be dealing with lead in the roof to quarter seam, but it was all bondo. I will start drilling out the spots in that area after I get the rest of the quarter off.
The areas that bother me the most are around the rear window and the trunk area. That will be tedious for me so that I don't screw it up.

I hear you on the "time" thing. I seem to be out of it daily. With a baby and a toddler the time is best spent with them. (Which they are the most important) We don't even really have time to take our 70 to any shows.... So I thought I would do the 69 I found to make a "driver" out of... we will see. LOL.
The biggest thing is getting things lined up, your eye will tell you a lot of where it should be. Keep the doors on, put the deck lid on, put the back glass in (not glued, but use some shims like paint sticks to hold it centered in the hole). Put the window rear mouldings on, just set it all in, you will start to see how it is coming together. You will "fit" the panels several times, don't weld anything permanent until your happy with the fitment of all of the panels inside and out. I.E. wheel wells to quarters and to floor.
I am using self tapping sheet metal screws to hold panels in place, it holds the panel tight and leaves a reference point when I take it apart to final prep the metal to do the final attachment. Once welded, I can pull the screws and plug the holes with the mig.
It is metal, it will move and can be moved. None of these cars were built perfect on the line. That is why there is big adjustment holes on the panels. It is intimidating, and can be over thought very easily. Especially seeing the cars that are on this site. Keep chipping away at it, you will do fine.

Thanks Chris. Never made it to the garage last night...well, I did, but just to hide a Christmas present that was on the porch. HAHA
I've got a lot of clamps, probably not enough, and clekos and such for the lining everything up. Put the passenger door back on with new hinges already. As soon as I get it cut off, I will start this process. I have a couple of days of vacation to burn in the next couple of weeks and two weeks off at Christmas. I'm hoping to get a lot of time in there.
Well, I got some time out there tonight and made some headway. Really got a lot done.
Got the front section taken off.

The "sticky" stuff is seam sealer. The factory used a couple different types depending on where in car it was. I had the same stuff on my 69, make sure to use a weld thru primer on the bare areas that are being attached and use seam sealer again on those areas as well. Glad you made it to the garage. I haven't been in mine for a while. Keep it going!
And was it ever sticky. It's out though and we are ready to finish it up tomorrow. Got a day off.
So at this point, you can see some surface rust on some of the areas inside the rear window and inside the quarter. So what do I do about that? POR-15 ?
I will get some weldable primer when I finish a little repair on the rocker.
Ok, so I finally have the quarter officially off. There is nothing left, beside a pile of metal and dust in the floor.

Bill, it looks like your doing a great job. How far did you stretch the inner? How much room do you have, from the lip of the outer, to your inner wall at frame? You'll have your quarter back on before you know it.
Hey Scott, I have not taken any measurements just yet. I will get some of those tomorrow. I'm hoping for at least 315's or better. I lost count of how many times I took the wells out an in. I talked to RickD today, and he gave me a lot of insight on some things I need to do. I've got a lot of cleko's to put in and probably a couple of pounds of sheet metal screws to get everything set up before welding it all in.
I guess, I can say I am on the downhill side of this at this point. I'll have to say a little prayer that everything else fits up properly.

"Yes, I did get ear protection for him."
That's the first thing I noticed. Rushing air is one of the worst offenders for hearing loss. Ask me how I know.
Best help you'll ever have. Nice work.
Scott, I'm measuring 14.5" from the frame to the inner lip of the wheel well. Not sure what that gives me. I'll have to ask the experts or look up some sizes to know for sure.

Nice job!! Remember, you will have this car apart and back together soo many times fitting and checking your head will spin. But the more you do it the better it will be. Don't over think it. The guys who do it every day have the practice, facility, assistance, and TIME. They get the 8 hours a day, but then a lot of them don't have the time to do their own cars.....
Keep up the good work!!

LOL!! Yes it is me. I have been away from GM dealers for a while, I figured I should change the name. After 20 years I am out of the wild world of dealerships hopefully for good.Still working on vehicles but for a different organization.
Well, I haven't gotten anything done on the quarter panel, still not getting time to work on it. However, I did manages to pick up something I never thought I would have. ChevelleNV had a change of direction so he needed someone to take this off his hands.

Nice tank Bill. What pump is that?
Scott, it is a Gen V Camaro pump that Rick's installs. Nothing special I guess, but it will cover my LQ9. I can always increase on the pump later.
Well, I have made a little headway on the quarter. It is fitting I think the best it can. So there are still a couple of issues. Of course, on the trunk, the gap really doesn't look too good.

So here is the next issue. How to get this to lay down. Do I just cut and make it lay down and weld it back?

Should I cut along the horizontal section to help it lay down and then weld the gaps up?

Sorry, missed this post.
SSSLLOOWW. Too slow. I wish I had more time in the garage, but work is kicking my tail. I'm almost to the point that I may be able to actually weld in the quarter really soon. Trying to catch up on some odds and ends for maintenance things around the house and all. Just life in general.

Good to hear
Well, I just looked at my thread because I actually have a day to work on it. I have a quick question if I can get an answer. Also, not sure what has happened to all the pictures. I'll get that straight later.
Here's the question. Working on the quarter, and ready to put it on the final time. What do I need to do with this surface rust?
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/IMG_7489_zps1ebf827f.jpg (http://s115.photobucket.com/user/HEEP_2006/media/CHEVELLE/IMG_7489_zps1ebf827f.jpg.html)

Totally up to you bill .
Use a rust converter
Wire wheel and prime
Sand and paint ...
Nothing
I took my quarters off and had the car sprayed with primer so I didn't have to worry about it but , I also had that issue.
Ok, so a long day repairing some areas in the trunk and some inner sheet metal. So the inner fender is ready to be welded on. All clamped up and a few screws holding it in.

I've often wondered the same thing. You see the pro shops pulling roof skins off and the inner sheet metal has signifiicant surface (or worse rust). This is usually after the body has been media blasted and is sitting in their nice fabrication area. So I have always doubted that they go back in there and spot media blast it. The other thing that always had me wondering is they will often go to great lengths to show you all the nice patch panels they make and all the places they cut out any indication of rust in the cowls and rockers and glass frames, yet they never seem to address the inner stuff. From what I've been able to gather they seem to just wire wheel it and epoxy it and figure that inner rust won't progress far even in another 20 years and even so it won't bubble up and ruin the paint anyway.
So i'm no expert, but these days what I would do with that is just a quick wire wheel, and then rust convertor followed by POR-15. Accorind to the instructions you don't even need to use a rust convertor although I probably would since its a pretty simple step. Not all the reviews on POR-15 are glowing, but I"ve been using it quite a bit lately and have had really good success with it. I work in a carport and cosmetics and paint have never been my thing, so I often lose patience with prep or have to spary paint in the cold, but the POR-15 has been sticking and protecting everything much better than any spray can. I do have a gun and compressor, but its such a pain in the butt to mix up paint and clean the gun and throw away what I don't use I don't use it too much. Another nice thing about POR-15 is you can brush it on pretty quickly, no need to tape off much because there is no overspray and really easy to see how the coat is doing. Just don't drip it on anything pretty, its very difficult to get off including skin.
Preston, thanks for the input. Yes, i have always wondered the same. How the shop stays so clean, and the work is always perfect. Crap, I probably blew 20 holes in the tunk floor yesterday trying to weld up a cut that I had made.
Just when you think you have it finished, the hole comes back.
Well, I had two days of solid work, takes me too long to do anything due to the second guess nature I have.
Today is spent cleaning the house for the wife because she is dealing with the bus accident we had here in Chattanooga. Her plans were to be off today to get ready for thanksgiving, but that isnt happening.
Say a little prayer for all who are involved in this. Really a bad time.
Also, wanted to add another angle shot to the wheel well.

To your earlier question - - -I blasted the inner structure of my car and sprayed it with epoxy primer. The exception to that was the inner roof structure. I wire brushed and wire wheeled it and brush on a POR 15 like products -- I forget the name right now. I wanted to have everything coated with something, even though it will never sit out in the elements again........
If you clean it up with scotch bright as best you can, a good epoxy primer will stick and protect it pretty well.

Bill, good to see some progress!
I'd consider the epoxy primer/sealer for the inner areas, as suggested.
I was in Gatlinburg when the bus accident happened. No words to describe how tragic this is. Hope your doing well. Happy Thanksgiving brother.

Thanks Scott. We had just come back from Gatlinburg on Sunday before it happened. Spent the weekend with family up there.
I hope to get some more time this weekend and maybe get the quarter completed. That is a hope.
Ok, So I think I am ready to weld in the quarter. Any last minute advise? Is there anything I need to do before the final fit and weld?
My fist thought is to sand, or clean all the areas that will be getting welded. Another thought I had was to figure out where all the wheel well molding screws go so that I don't have to drill through a weld when those get installed.
I have weld through primer, so most areas can be primed before welding. Just throwing all this out there to make sure I get it right. I DO NOT want to remove for any reason.

Bill, glad to see progress again!! I just caught up on this. I would make sure all the areas that are getting a weld have clean metal, use a weld thru primer, I used a "rust converter" on the inner structure of the 69 just a preventative. If you consider how old these cars are and what little protection they had, it is minimal on the inside. I think any primer, converter etc. you use will help the car outlive many of us. also after the paint is done, cured. you can use a product like "3m rust fighter I" in the rockers, inner quarters etc. The trim screws are a pain, you can fit now if that is what you want. I never worried about it until after.of the 69

Just finished reading your thread. I had the same issues and concerns with the inner sheetmetal on my Fairlane. I went to a auto paint supply store and talked with them. The turned me on to a rust treatment system that can be shot through a flexible tube about 21" long. Since I didnt have to do the 1/4 panels at the size you do I needed to get up where you "anti flex" foam is on your car. The system worked very well. There were plenty of little tight areas that could be treated. I just slid the tube in and didnt worry about runs since it is underneath everything. Great build BTW.
Chris, thanks for the input. I'm trying to spray everything with the primer before I weld. Taking off the E Coat that is applied to the panels that are new.
Getting time in the garage has been a blessing. It has been the cleanup of the garage that has Taken much of the time this week.
I'm on it though. My goal is to have the quarter welded in by Monday afternoon
So just when I think I'm ready, I see something that needs to be done.
Needed to set up the trunk hinge brace when I cut it out.

Removed it the last time and punched all the spot weld hole and clamped it back on. So that is where I stand at this point. Was hoping to finish it up, but fell and broke my arm last weekend so out for 4-5 weeks after surgery tomorrow.
So close, but just so far.

Scott, no giving up yet. Just frustrated I got so far, and had to stop.
Yea, slipped on some ice here when we had a little dusting last weekend, and didn't stick the landing. Broke my left radius and go in the morning for some extra metal to hold it together.
One of my friends said I should just go bionic, but I couldn't find a new hand that had a welding lead in one of the fingers.

Good job Bill. Everything's looking good. Keep up the good work. Bill...you, Scott and I...we are the 3 amigo's. Us Chevelle guys gotta stick together in our threads. LOL!! We're all chipping away on our Chevelle's slowly but surely. Mine may be the slowest, but we're all getting there. I have to weld my trunk braces back together as well from where I put in wider rear wheel tubs too.
Well guys, so surgery went well, and I am on the mend. Still can't move my hand at the wrist full movement, but I can enough to get in the garage and do some work. The quarter panel is four spots from being officially welded in. I just need an extra hand on the last four. Here are pictures. Keep in mind, all these need to be buffed down.
First Tack.

Now, guys, I need more guidance. How would you handle this trunk gap?
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/8BDCBC1E-420D-468F-AB4F-954FA18326CD_zpsk1farump.jpg (http://s115.photobucket.com/user/HEEP_2006/media/CHEVELLE/8BDCBC1E-420D-468F-AB4F-954FA18326CD_zpsk1farump.jpg.html)
You can see that the gap goes from 6mm to 8mm and then down to 4.5mm. I have thought af adding to the edge of the trunk, but that would just cause a bow in the edge there. Would you cut the area at the widest part of the gap then split it and weld back?
If so, I need to see some videos of metal finishing. I'm lacking in that area for sure.
Also, here where the wheel well meets the trunk floor and back seat floor pan, do you weld that solid, or fill the gap with seal sealer?
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n306/HEEP_2006/CHEVELLE/410F1FE1-9726-440B-B1F6-CFD233CFDCFB_zpsdz6gpteg.jpg (http://s115.photobucket.com/user/HEEP_2006/media/CHEVELLE/410F1FE1-9726-440B-B1F6-CFD233CFDCFB_zpsdz6gpteg.jpg.html)

Marcus, I do understand. I did overdo it on Saturday. The Doc did say use it. No therapy other than just keep moving it. My son said he could make it move all the way, I told him if he wants to live to see his next birthday, then he will keep his hands off me.

It was just good to be able to get back out there and work on it some.

Well, It has been 6 years since I updated this thread. Much has changed in the life here for my family and I.
So, since 2017, I broke my tibia plateau on a dirt bike, got better after that, and life in general took over.
The Chevelle, took the seat way in the back. Kids were growing up, engaged in sports and school, and just taking precedent for life with the wife and I. Fast forward to April 2020. Amazed at what a tornado will do to a house. we were hit and the house was totaled. Moved into a extended stay hotel for a month, and then to a rental house. The Chevelle stayed in the detached garage during that process.
Before that, the young man in the pictures grew up and talked me into getting him a K20 Chevy truck. Along with that, I got the fever and helped him along the process with a LS swap, new gears, wiring, dash, transmission, and everything else that was wrong with it. So you know that took over the garage and the Chevelle progress stopped.
We ended up tearing down the house and selling the property, and having a new place built. What a process. So much to decide on.
I had a friend that had space for all my tools and the Chevelle. Had to store it for a while so that we could get the new place built and moved into. amazed at even building new, there is still so much to do.
At this point, the boy has been in the Army for two years. He is stationed in Ft. Lewis McCord in Washington State.
My daughter just got married. That took funds away from the Chevelle, go figure, and I got a new job position within Komatsu.
At this point, life is pretty good. Except, the Chevelle hasn't progressed at that point.
So that is life, now on to what has happened in the last month.
With the help of my brother in law, he encouraged to go get the car and get it to the garage. I had completed some updates on my HEEP and moved it to the center bay. The end bay is cleared and ready for the Chevelle.
So away I go.
Here are the pictures of getting it out of storage and getting it home.
Rolled it into the new garage

I have a young one and another coming soon. They're a part of the reason I decided to sell the TA a couple years ago. I knew I wouldn't have time to continue working on a project. Glad to see you're back at it with the car. I wish you the best in making progress.
So while the son was home on leave after his deployment for his sisters wedding, he had talked me into working on the Chevelle engine since I had a new cam and parts to install it. Also purchased the Holley front drive system, so we checked out this part of it also. We both enjoyed the time in the garage again, and it was good for both of us.
Ended up seeing the cam bearing was a little worn. I had initially thought I was just going to cam swap and run it, but now I am too far into it to not go further. The new job enables me to use the distributor machine shop that I support, so we loaded it in the company truck Sunday and hauled it down there to have it cleaned and checked out for wear.
Based on their findings, going back with rebuild kit with all STD components. That will get ordered next week.
Here are some pictures the day we moved it out of the old garage.
That was a rough day.

Bill, I looked in on your build a year ago or so, just to see if you’d been back. It’s crazy how life goes and how fast time moves us along. I bought my Chevelle in ‘11 and me and my son Brandon worked on it a lot together. He was 8 then. Today, he’s in college. I can’t believe I’ve had mine 12 years. I’ve been talking to a friend for the last few months about buying mine actually.
I’m glad to hear your healthy and back on track here. Keep us updated sir!

Scott,
Thanks for checking in and trying to keep track. My job takes me all over GA. I need to stop by sometime.
Hate to think you are selling, but I understand. I've been blessed to be able to keep this all these years.
I may even get to get out in the garage today and Saturday to work on it. I need some garage time.
I'm sure your son enjoyed working on it as much as mine. Mine is actually pushing for me to get it done. I think he just doesn't want to finish is if I kill off for some reason. HAHA
Bill
Had a little time this past weekend. Got out in the garage and started to remove the drivers quarter. Of course, the window and mechanism has to come out first. I hope I can get it back in. HAHA
Then started to remove spot welds to get the quarter off.
One thing I noticed, the new quarters don't have the little pins for the clips that hold the window moulding on. Will have to find a way to address that later.
So, I hadn't realized how behind I am on updating. Some work has been going on. The quarter finally came off and the new one going back on along with ABC Performance widened inner fenders.

Looking good!!
While my son was home for Christmas leave, he talked about starting the build on the engine. So I had all the block work completed, and we started to set the crank and pistons. WE got 3 in, and the ring compressor stopped working correctly. He was disappointed to say the least.
After he left, I was able to get a new ring compressor and get the rest installed.
Then I hit issues. Started installing the cam, and #4 cam journal would not allow the cam to go in fully. So back apart and to the machine shop to fix that problem. Got it all back together, and realized the cam gear was wrong for my application. I'm changing the engine from a GEN III to a GEN IV. Then needed to also install the timing chain guide which required drilling the block. Mistakenly, drilled through the block, which is internal and not a problem, other than all the shavings going inside the engine. So, apart again to clean everything up, then reinstall everything.
At this point, the heads are on, and ready to be torqued. Will get that completed this week.

So a couple of weeks ago, I stopped at Summit in GA. Noticed that they had a steering column that would work for the Chevelle. It was missing a key, so they had it at half price.
This weekend, while waiting on paint to dry, I had the idea of taking the key cylinder from my original 3 on the tree column and putting it in the new column. Yes , it worked so I will be using my original key for the car. Happy this worked out.

That's cool!! Small things like this make builds fun and are a great conversation piece.
I wanted to get some help making a decision on coil overs or stay with air ride. At his point, I have the ridetech airride shocks that came with my suspension kit. I currently don't have the air system, and now looking at possibly moving to coil overs instead.
It would be less money to order new shocks instead of an air system. It would also be less issues with installation. So I am leaning toward the coil overs.
Now the next question, whose do I choose? Stay with Ridetech, or go to like Aldan, or Speedtech? I like the Speedtech at this point, but not sure if it would work with the A-arms from RideTech.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Bill

Looking good. I love the clean & compact footprint of the Holley Mid-Mount set-up.
As for the Air Ride vs. C/O suspension.... It comes down to what YOU ultimately want. I have had air set-ups (basic manual set-ups only) on multiple trucks over the rears. They're great for adjusting ride height when I'm pulling a trailer. But they can have issues & can be a source of aggravation @ times when supporting pieces fail (compressors, pressure switches, height sensors) while not @ home.
That being said, seeing as you are talking about a GM A-body, the chassis is basically like the C/O option w/o the adjustability. The good about the C/O's is the ability to easily tweak spring rate vs. an OE configuration replacement/aftermarket coil spring but I'd bet most replacements springs get the job done as-is. Next is the ability to tweak/adjust small ride height changes as well, So, C/O's get the nod for adjustability over traditional coils if you are the type that will want to 'adjust' things beyond the initial setting up.
Maybe the answer is in the realm of do you like to tweak things, or do you tend to leave things alone if you're good w/the initial set-up?
So, after much measuring and fortuneatly another person working with Speedtech on an A-body with the Ridetech strong arms, we were able to get coil overs ordered. They arrived and so, the install was started.
Before this could happen, I finally finished all the welds and smooth down the welds of the quarter panel. Mark that off the list.
Rearend tried to kick my butt, however, got all the control arms lined up and the upper bushings installed in the rearend housing.
After this was completed, I moved to the front coil over bracket install.

And added bead rolling, but it warped and didn’t fit any more. Never tried bead rolling before, so it was a learning opportunity. 83280

Good to see you still at it Bill. Looks great.
I am still at it. Seems like every time, I think I am done with metal work, I see something else that needs completed.
Waiting on a Trans tunnel metal to be bent, and that should finish up every thing.
Time though is not always a friend.
Thanks for looking.
Bill
A little more work on Saturday. Garage time is always the best.
Got both trunk hinge supports welded back in. The trunk area seems to be complete. Trying to decide if I’m going to leave the jack and spare tire mounts on the floor.
Still waiting on metal for the trans tunnel. Hopefully it will be ready next week. 83332

Also finally made a couple of clamps for the weld table.

So a little more garage update. Got a new TIG machine but needed a place to put it. So now the plasma and TIG are on a tool box I already had. It needed all swivel castors on it and a way to hold a gas bottle. I made a frame out of 1” square tubing and got it all put together. 83466

Back to the Chevelle.
Searched for brake information in the brakes section of Lateral-g. Received some very good information about a company called BigBrakeUpgrade.
They were very helpful in getting information to me and walking me through the process of modifying Camaro brake backing plates to fit a 12-bolt GM rearend.

Got the axles back from the machine shop and set up to drill and tap for new 12” studs. Made a block to ensure that the drill and tap went in straight. 83560

Also got the new exhaust manifolds and installed on the engine. Tried to put the picture in, but Tapatalk seems to not like to do that.

Pictures of the rotors and calipers installed.
Moving forward to the front brakes. The previous brackets will not work with the new calipers. Contacted BIGBRAKEUPGRADE.COM and the correct brackets will be here this week.
