View Full Version : Made an executive decision...
I've been mulling over this decision for months on end. I've decided that I won't be doing the RS grill on the car. It just won't work with the intercooler, it interferes with the door actuation. I've considered all the options and this is the best route. I really wanted to do the RS, I had planned it from the beginning, but it's just not going to work.
Guess I need a new rendering now. lol I'll still use the endura bumper, so I guess my car will have the Thrasher look.

I like the standard grill better than the RS grill.

Scott, just make the RS doors non-functional and run a bright or HID headlight to shine through the door grilles. That way you wont have to run all the RS actuators and tanks and can save all the room.
I run my headlights like this at night and get enough light to see the road, and I think it looks better with the doors closed at all times anyways.
Ryan, I've thought a lot about that option. I'm just not sure about it since I plan on driving it a fair amount at night. Thanks for the feedback on driving with the doors closed. That's something that Charley had also recommended.
Along with the intercooler, another reason for going with the standard grill is that I plan on ducting the inlet plumbing to the turbos from the area of the grill outside the headlights. It will all be enclosed and should work great.

I agree, just don't hook up all the vacuum junk. Have you checked out the DSE kit to see if that may work for you. Worse comes to worse just push them in with you hand went you want to open them.... I just love the RS look...
There's physically not enough room for the doors to open past half way with the intercooler mounted on the core support.

No problem Scott, I love the RS grille so much I would have done anything to make it work. :hail:
I still think if you run HID's you don't need the doors to open. I am running Bosch bright headlights and I have enough light to see at night with them closed.

 I agree.
Where there is a will...there is a way. With all the other cool, custom stuff you have done, this should be nothing.

Scott, as was said earlier,RS or no RS the car is still going to ROCK!! As the saying goes..Function before Form. Put it like this way..More HP or RS front end..No brainer?? LOL!
Oh, it will definitely work if I just run the lights through the doors. I'm just not real wild about that. I like the standard front, too.

What about custom fabbing an intercooler that will fit with the RS headlights?
Trevor, that's an option as well.
It sounds like everyone likes the RS more than I do. :)

Scott dont fall under the pressure. The standard frontlooks killer. I used to like the RS front but I think the Standard just has a Bad A$$ look to it where as the RS is more refinded looking. LOL

Your renderings of your car is a HUGE influence on the direction that i am choosing to go with mine. Your car won't be the same to me without the RS setup! :hail:

I like the RS grill better. I think it's sleeker and stealthier looking but if you're into the more utilitarian, "git'r done" look leave the standard one. Afterall is said and done, it's your car and you have to look at it everyday. It's just a personal preference thing. One is not better than the other.
Thanks for the kind words, guys. :)
This is something that I've been wrestling with for a long time. Jody and I were talking it over at SEMA and on a regular basis ever since. It really does boil down to personal preference as I know I can run the lights through the doors... but I also want to pull cold air from the outside areas of the grill.
I have both setups in the shop. I've put both versions on the car and just sat there in a chair looking at it. And looking at it. Then swapped it out and sat there some more. I know the grill sets the tone for the character of the car. I get the vibe that the standard front end is more business looking and the RS grill is all about being clean and more modern.
Some guys struggle with color choice, some struggle with picking the right wheels, but this damn grill has been eating at me for months.

The car is going to be kick-a$$ either way. One could do worse than to have a car that looks a bit like the Thrasher. It'll be great, don't sweat it.
Personally, I prefer the standard grille anyway.
Thanks. :)
Reading your post, I realize I should have started a poll just for the fun of it. Maybe I'll start a new thread with that question and a poll...

May sound stupid, I'm a turbo virgin, but would a smaller IC work?

Go with whichever one that you like. If you really want to run the RS, just fab up a new mech that will allow the doors to go up and down instead of left and right.

If you do go with the grill closed all the time with the lights shining through, you should put a really good driving light in the lower valence and that should help some.

Scott, I think I know where your coming from. The lights will work thru the doors but you want the system to function properly, right. If the doors opened there would be no conversation. If I was building the car I would like the doors to work, that's just me. Maybe there is a way to make it work. The car will be great with the standard setup also. Sounds crazy but maybe you could have the doors be releasable and take them off with a quick release pin when driving at night.
Good luck

Scott -
I am doing the same thing with my Firebird (kind of). The lights will shine directly through the grilles, but I am also working on a quick release setup just like Stuart just mentioned. I spoke with a buddy of mine who works at NASA. He said they actually use two alternative methods for doors and stuff on the shuttle:
1. Magnetic strips - similar to the kind that holds refrigerator doors shut and
2. Industrial Velcro - George de Mestral invented it, but NASA utilizes it on bunches of stuff
Either way, your car is killer. :hail:
P.S. Intercoolers are way overrated, just use a wet sponge !!:willy:
Yea I guess I am partial to the stock grill ont he red 69's. I know there is alot of good advice in this post, and all I can say is make sure you do what you want.
The bottom line is "it can be done". If you want an RS grill, there is a way to do it, somehow! But either way it will look good.
And I think you got a few more steps before then huh! LOL. Althought you seem to have got a streak going here with more and more work getting done! Congrats!

hmmmmmmm 1/4 turn quick release could be cool IF you dont mind taking the doors off and throwing them in the car for night driving.
And remember..silver is an option!!!!

I hate decisions like these, they kill you to think about them. One minute you've made up your mind, the next you've had a change of heart again. You can always swap it out later when you figure out how to make it work the way you want it.

I too run with the doors closed at night.
Back to the point here. It seems clear you're not committed to the RS style so move on with your standard front, cool air inlet, etc. Such a great car. All that time in the chair staring could be wrenching time :)

You think this is a hard decision? Try having to deside if you want to build up your 66 nova or 68 camaro first. LOL I think The nova will be built first but then I see Penny and I want to build the camaro. :D

Scott, I got to say I love that Stielow runs the standard grills on his builds, it gives them the right attitude for his build style. But, I just looked at your rendering and feel that if you are going to use the fender well trim and such, the RS frontend really works on your car...it, along with your wheels and other part choices, gives it that very clean and classy look. But if you are going to loose the RS trim, I would go standard...gotta love the way Thrasher and Mule look!!
With that said I agree it will be a very sweet ride when done with either front end! And trust me I know how these decisions can not only kill time but also cost A LOT of good nights sleep...this is comimg from a guy that finally 'thinks' he knows what color his car will be!!

Scott, I also wanted the RS front until I saw this car. It is classic and looks mean....then I decided to go with the Standard grill. Either way, build it like YOU want it.
