Been on the site for a little while now, and I must say that you guys are a dedicated and talented bunch of enthusiasts.
I'm a 40 year old gearhead, who does electrical contracting out of necessity. It pays the bills. My passion is cars. I'm a performance and technology nerd. If its cutting edge, I'm interested. I've had my hands in a lot of cool stuff. I've built a couple high end builds for show. Both were trucks. The first one I built for myself, and its won just about anything ISCA could throw at it. It's been featured in truckin' and Sport truck magazines. It's won the coveted Boyd Coddington award. 1 of 400 he ever made. Not trying to boast here, just laying some ground work. I'm pretty picky. A perfectionist actually. I do my own work, and I do it right. I've worked with cars since I was a teenager, and its a passion. I've worked around quality people, and I believe that makes all the difference. I worked for an engine builder who did a lot of cup engines, and other types of racing engines. He taught me how to be patient, and why attention to details matters. He also raced asphalt late models, and I worked on his cars. He taught me chassis. Years later, I was able to afford my own asphalt race team, and what I learned from him, engine and chassis wise, was invaluable.
All the while I've been a fan of the 70 Chevelle. I've had many chances to purchase a nice one through the years, but passed. I'm not one to just buy a car from someone, and enjoy it. I have to make it mine. It's a disease. I'm in Georgia, and around here, if its a 70' it's worth more than say a 71' in the same condition. I don't know why. But it's true. So when it came time to begin this project, finding a nice donor car at a reasonable price was impossible. So I found a suitable 71' in my price range, and pulled the trigger. It's a decent car. An Alabama Craigslist find, that had been in the same family since it was new. It will be a 70' clone when I'm done with it. Nothing wrong at all with a 71'. Just not what I wanted.
I'm looking to build a 70' that will handle well, as I will surely go dodge some cones. It must have a decent amount of power, high 400, to low 500 horse, with gobs of torque. The car must stop well, and be above all else, fun to drive. I don't want to use the pro-touring title, but I guess that's the overall look I'm after. I've owned a couple of corvettes, so I'm kind of spoiled with what I'm looking for in a overall package. This will be fun. I have tons of pics to share with you guys, so be patient. This will take a while.

Started with this. Bought it November of 11'

Another view. Gotta love those wheels. I just realized that my cat is in the first pic, and a partial of my dog in the second pic. That's funny.

So, the first order of business was getting the car apart, and seeing what I had to start with.

http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y502/Che70velle/55A424F8-AA10-4E7A-B543-38E1D298044F-1745-0000023CC6F85B11_zpsc3b8c602.jpg

So I got the shell up on a rotisserie, and quickly saw that I needed floors, and the trunk pan had issues as well.

Che70velle

So I made a quick trip over to Year One, and purchased everything needed to convert my 71' into. 70'. I began with the floors, and made quick work with them.

http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y502/Che70velle/D975D6E6-A1F0-4DDD-99D4-EA54F9E965AB-1745-0000023CC327857D_zps93377867.jpg

I left my tranny tunnel opened, because I knew the t56 would require more room.

Overall the only rust issues I have ran into are the common floors, trunk, and bottom corners of the rear window, which was an easy patch.

I am not, repeat, am not building a show car. I will drive this car. A lot. Having said that, my paint job will be a quikie. It will be nice, don't get me wrong, but I'm not gonna spend up all of my home equity doing it. I've been there and done that. So I'm gonna spend nearly all of this cars budget on chassis and drivetrain. I considered an aftermarket chassis, but I love fabbing my own stuff. I knew That I wanted a true coilover car, and I had a direction that I wanted to go. I looked at my GM frame and started with measurements, and went from there. After spending a lot of time on my front end, I realized that I could buy the Global West extended travel kit as cheap as I could build one, so that was first in line.

http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y502/Che70velle/19D1A751-89D4-4A11-9B65-4B587F1BE3C3-1745-0000023E435F6745_zps31e80484.jpg

It's built very well.

The install was really simple...

Weld the perimeter and a couple of other key areas and your done.

On to the rear end coilover setup. I removed my factory upper spring bucket brackets first. I then installed a crossmember after many measurements were taken. This crossmember was inset into my frame with a holesaw, instead of flush mounting it, on each side for strength.

I then braced this crossmember to the factory crossmember diagonally.

I had ABC Performance, in Michigan, custom build me some custom boxing plates. They build a lot of boxing plates, but this was the first set they built with lightening holes in them.

I added another crossmember in front of the axle, that my two tubes that run front to back, tie into. I added trussing off of these tubes, into my new boxing plates.

Welcome to the site. Where in GA are you located? I'm from GA and am trying to move back to the ATL and mountain region. I love it there. I just need to find an engineering job first.

Love what you're doing with the Chevelle. Do you have plans to build the engine or just run with what it has to offer stock?

Thanks Dug, I am going to try a "big bar, soft spring" setup that used to work well for me when I raced NASCAR late models. I am gonna dodge some cones, and being as how these a-body frames are as flimsy as a fly swatter, I figured I better try something. I might cage this car also, which would really add a lot of stiffness. I'm on the fence with the cage, due to the weight. I've already added more weight than I wanted to.

Thanks! I'm in Dawsonville, about 1 hour north of ATL. As far as my engine goes, I worked with Mast Motorsports to "pick it up a tad". I'll cover more of the engine side a little later. It's a pretty mild LY6.

I like Dawsonville. Gorgeous area. I've been through there a few times and loved it. You're not far from AMP. Any plans to visit or have you visited already?

Don't worry about the added weight. Just add more power to bring the power to weight ratio back towards your goal :D

Trey, I am up in the N. western part of the county, just a couple of miles from Amicalola Falls. It is a beautiful place to live, for sure.
Glad you mentioned AMP. I have been, in fact my son, who is 9, is a big fan of exotics, so we go over there to check out the lambos, and ferrari's. Itis quite a place, and I'm amazed they chose this area to build it.
I'm a very weight conscious guy. The cage would place weight high...exactly where I don't need any more with this boat. We will see.

When I left GA, AMP was still embroiled in legal battles. I had forgotten about it until recently when I heard it was finally built and open. I'm glad it seems to be working out. Road Atlanta is also in a very pretty area of the state. I hope to do some HPDE classes one day at either or both. Maybe even track days on my motorcycle

I can't wait til I return home.

Put my lower motor mounts in place, and front suspension arms on. I did not buy lowers that were designed for coilovers, so I knew all along I'd be modding my lowers. I wasn't sure how far I'd have to go, until I nailed down my ride height. I'm using 7" stroke shocks.

http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y502/Che70velle/1BD2F456-26E2-4381-ACA8-BF1738E1428F-1745-0000023F274D9ADA_zpsf24cc822.jpg

Che70velle
12-29-2012, 09:29 AM
This is at ride height. As you can see, I had to add 2" to the bottom of my arms, in order to get 2.5" of shock travel, which is about 5" of wheel travel. The modded arm is still above my crossmember at ride height. Should be ok, I hope.
I have always raced on Penske's, but I think I'm gonna give JRI a try.

Are the rear coil over mounts going to be strong enough? I would think you'd need a double shear mount since the weight of the car is being carried through the mounts now.

I like the silver color.

I at this point am not sure. We ran these style mounts on our race cars, which were lighter for sure, but saw very high loads while cornering. I will mod what I have, if so. The silver color is the new silverado bright silver. It will be the body color also. I have never built a vehicle with the chassis/body the same color.

Thanks Wayne. I hope the chassis works like it looks.
With the chassis out of the way (for now), lets move on to drivetrain.
I got a really good deal on a t56 that had been rebuilt. I came across this unit locally to me. The only snag about this tranny, was that it was a 96' unit. Pre-LS version. I knew I was going to put an LS engine in my car, so replacing the necessary items up front in the tranny was in order. And this was fine by me, because I'm the guy who enjoys this type of stuff. A lot! So I ordered a new input shaft, front cover, and bellhousing. Let the conversion begin!

This is the longer LS style input shaft on the right, compared to the LT-1 style of yesterday...
http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y502/Che70velle/0EABE194-C601-4591-AF23-42A4A430B372-1745-0000023D0555F2B1_zps76769399.jpg

The conversion is pretty simple, as long as you have access to some micrometers, and a way to fixture the tranny up in such a way to measure preload on the input shaft. You'll have to press a bearing race into the rear of the new input shaft, as they don't come pre assembled with the race. You'll have to play with a shim set under the race in the front cover, for the bearing you see pictured on the old input shaft. This is where you set your preload. Done.

Out back, I bought a 12 bolt, that just happened to be date coded a 70'. It needed to be totally gone through from absolute end to end, and everything in between. Yea for me, again, as I truly love this type of stuff. So I ordered a big stack of bearings and seals, a 3.73 ring and pinion, and a Eaton posi unit. Even bought a fancy rear end cover. Lol.

Here's the housing after I cleaned it, and checked it for straightness.

I knocked out all of the races, and began the set up process. Here is most of the new bearings and seals, and the 43 year old 4.10 ring and pinion.

For power, after much looking around and researching, I went with an LY6. This is the only regret I have in my build. And I say that only because of the iron block. I don't want or need the extra weight up front. I'm building this car to turn. I will NEVER drag race this car. So the added front weight won't help me at all. I will most likely swap over to an aluminum block in the future. But I'm gonna run hat I have for now. On the plus side, I am a big fan of the VVT engines. Always have been. They are obviously here to stay, so it's a technology we all need to embrace. Anyway, you know the drill. I took my relatively low mile engine apart to inspect, and I'm glad I did. Yuck, what a mess.

Here is a lousy close up pic of the engine, the day I got it to my shop. Pretty average condition.

I was blown away with what Mast Motorsports had done with the VVT technology, so after consulting them on a direction, I ordered a cam kit from them. A little better than 500 flywheel horses (although I'm WAY more interested in torque) with a cam kit, long tube headers, intake, and a good tune. That's pretty hard to beat, dollar wise, and plenty of power for me on this build.

17" billets. No, they are not Forgeline, but for what I payed for them, you would have bought them too.

Bolted the engine and tranny together, with a new TDP stage 3 clutch in between them, and finally set the combo in the chassis. It had been a while since mock up. I think they were glad to see each other again. ;)

Can I get some info on the cherokee steering box? Direct bolt in? I'm a little behind on the information aspect of my Chevelle.

Can't wait to see more, keep the updates coming.

Looking good. I'm glad to see you keep the VVT technology. I like the idea of embracing modern tech obviously. Considering these cars are also meant to cruise, going on long trips and saving gas is just icing on the cake.

One advantage to always keep in mind with an iron block LSx engine is that rebuilding or stroking one is cheap since you don't have to worry about resleeving the block. Can you stroke the engine and keep the VVT? That would be cool if you can.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks boss, you should definitely start a build thread. The Jeep Grand Cherokee box is a direct bolt in. Your chevelle steering arm will work. The only difference is the threads in the box where your lines attach. The jeep box is metric thread, and your Chevelle box is SAE. If you are going to make your own AN lines, you can buy AN fittings, and then there is no difference. If you are going to run standard lines, there is a line that is a direct fit, but I'd have to do some research to find it again. Just make sure you get a 98' Grand Cherokee box. Now go start your build thread!:lateral:

Yes sir, for me VVT is a no brainier. I understand the tech, and its got mad potential. I will drive this car a lot. That's really why I'm going the LS fuel injection route. Fuel economy, and reliability. I have gobs of high end SBC parts in the shop that I could have put together and had a 427 small block that would have gotten at least 5 mpg's. lol!
I hear you loud and clear on the iron block. I can live with it for now. The VVT doesn't know, or care what the stroke is.

Sorry for the hijack.heep,i have a 89 12.7:1trans am box in my chevelle and you can use the sae hoses, the metric female threads are close in pitch, you just need the aluminum deals that press into the box so you can use flare fitting hoses.tom lee sells them(lee manufacturing sun valley ca.)also if your running a p style pump, they sometimes suffer from whats referred to as lazy pump syndrome.you might need to modify the poppet valve to increase the pressure/pump flow, its a pretty simple mod.phil

I've been working on a truck project all winter for a friend. It payed, and my stuff does not, so I went with his. I'm actually glad he called me. It was a fun transformation. Delivered it to him last week, and now I'm trying to catch up on stuff around the house, but between the rain, and my many priorities, I've been a busy boy. I was getting a game plan together last night on my car, as to begin striping paint, and getting some primer on it. So hopefully I'll get to work on it here in the next few days, and get some pictures up. Thanks for digging this back up and dusting the cobwebs off it! Huge milestone for me. Bodywork is done, and car is sealed. This took me a while. I'll be putting the shell on the chassis, which has been done for a while now, and build the entire car. Check gaps, make sure harness works, in case I need to drill and grommet something, etc. I just want to make sure everything is right before we paint. So basically build car, blow it apart, paint, and rebuild car.
The good news is I've already mocked the car up entirely once, body wise, so my gaps are decent. Believe it or not, I'm on the downhill slide. Bodywork absolutely whipped me. I'm too picky.

Thanks man. My fuel system plans are currently a Tanks, Inc pump in my stock tank, with custom baffling. It will be next summer before its done, so plans could easily change before then. I don't like the aftermarket tanks. They hang too low for me. I'm gonna go stock tank either with pump in, or exterior in line.

Thanks Marcus. The car will be the same as the chassis, which is the new silverado bright silver. I forget the actual name that the tech told me, for the shade. For stripes I am going to put just a smidge of black in my mix to make the silver a tad darker. You won't even see the stripes from 50'. Not really a ghost stripe, but just an "almost" stripe LOL.

Scott, I've thought about doing this myself. Didn't really know how I wanted to do it though, because....like you, I didn't necessarily want ghost stripes, but I wanted them a tad, shade darker than the paint on the car. I didn't know how to go about doing it because I figured I'd have to try 2,000 different colors to get the right shade of darker blue. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.

Heep, when turning to the left, my linkage misses by a hair. What I did was reverse the tie rod ends. I put the inners on the outside, and the outers on the inside. I did this because of the zerk fittings. The inner zerks aim toward the pan, and the outer zerks aim upward. It's the zerk fittings that hit the pan, and a lot of people fill them full of grease, and then cap them off. By reversing them, I can still grease my tie rods, but it requires turning the wheel a little bit.
I will try to get a pic for you and post it up.

Rick I measured them tonight, and they are right at 40", sitting in the car, measured up the rear of the seat, at the same angle as the seat, or the tape measure running parallel to the back of the seat. Geesh I hope that makes sense. Yell at me if it doesn't.

Scott,
Do you realize that it is now 2014? Just wondering.:relax: :underchair: :poke:

Bill, I had a very busy fall and winter, which is good for the Chevelle account, but it also means that I was wasn't able to get much done. I got my entire fuel system for myself for Christmas, and in the last 3 weeks I have purchased everything else I needed to complete the car minus gauges, and a new windshield. I finished all my gap work, and body work this past weekend, which I've worked on every chance I got, this winter. I'm currently wiring the car, and hope to start the junker this weekend. If that goes well, then it's disassemble, paint, and then reassembly. I should drive this thing this summer. I have seen the ups guy so much lately, were now good friends. Lol.

So, how is yours coming along?

HEEP
03-17-2014, 04:47 PM
Scott, you have been busy. Did you forget that we love pictures? Well, sounds like you have your hands full. can't wait to see how things are coming along.

so what are you using to wire the car? Painless? AAW? I'm still torn on who to use. Especially when Stielow starts posting up what he is using now.

As for mine, very slow. I did get the front end installed. I'll get pics posted up later this week. Right now, we are in the midst of Soccer season. My weekends are taken up.

Che70velle

Yeah, I gotcha. Baseball started last Saturday for us. I went with AAW, and a PSI engine harness. I'm building my own battery relocate kit for the trunk. I have a friend with a killer 68' camaro, who put a Ron Francis wiring kit in his car. He placed the fuse block in the trunk, and it's pretty trick. I love marks builds, but he has to better himself every build. That gets expensive. Me, I'd run out of ideas, after that many chevelle's. Pics coming soon!

So which AAW kit? Yes, Mark has to be running out of ideas. But I am sure he will not disappoint us in the future. I have no idea where he comes up with this stuff. However, he does push us, or at least me. Just don't have the money to spend like that.

So are you mounting yours in the trunk also?

I'm using the AAW Classic Update kit. I bought mine through Summit, but MCB has it listed for the same price. My firewall is stock, so I'm putting it up front. Only thing in my trunk, which will be Rhinolined, is my battery, sub box, and an amp.

Ok, so a lot of parts purchasing has taken place in the last 6 months. I THINK I only need to pick up my gauges, and a steering wheel. Lol, I should have never posted that, as we all know how just when you think your done, it's time to order more stuff.
Anyhow, I have some progress pics for anyone who cares about this pile. My painter, who has always done my show stuff in the past, gave me an ultimatum.
He told me no more "parts", or shells, or cabs, or beds. He's done with going through all that effort, and I don't blame him, as many of you know how much work it is to pull off a nice paint job. BUT, he's good. REAL good, so I'm gonna take him the car assembled, and he's gonna spray it. He wants it running and driving also. He told me he ain't pushing any more cars around his place. I'm cool with that. I've never done one this way, but there's a first time for everything. I have already painted the firewall/cowl, door jambs, and trunk jamb. I will paint the inner fenders, the inside of the fenders, bottom of the hood, bottom of the decklid, etc.
I was planning on leaving my tunnel exposed, painted the body color, but now I'm leaning toward covering it with maybe something other than carpet? I dunno. I'm just trying to build something a little different. I have an august 1st appointment with my painter, so I have a month to get the car completely assembled and drivable. It's been a busy few evenings for me.
I lost a lot of time this spring fooling around with GM electronics trying to get the car running during the SECOND mock up. I ended up going with Mast electronics, and I'm glad I did. The car sounds great through flowmaster mufflers.

Andy I bent everything myself. Both new crossmembers, and the tubes running front to back, are coped into the frame, meaning I used a holesaw the size of the tube, and the new tubes go into the frame, and are welded from both sides. I have changed the mid-crossmember, the one that turns up and just touches the floor in front of the rear seat. It has been cut out and replaced with 1 1/2" x 1/2" plate that now turns down and goes below the driveshaft. I thought that during mock up my mufflers would fit behind the one that I made first, but no dice. Now the mufflers are sitting on top of the new flat crossmember. I'll try to find a new picture...
I know that there are kits out there, but you'll have to do some research. Shoot just order a chassis from Roadster Shop and get it over with. :ohsnap:

Thanks Scott (and Ron),

I'll do some research on kits. But i do have a welding questions. I've only welded with my Mig thus far in my restoration/rebuilding experience. I've used it for all of the body work i've done, and even welding parts of the frame on my Chevelle and my old nova (which is sold now). However, attempting what you've don with your frame seems like strength and taking your time with the welds is important. I know i've done what i've thought to be "good strong welds" with my Mig on thick steel before, but do you suggest getting a Tig for this type of frame fabrication? Just wondering. Thanks again for the help and keep the pictures coming. :welder:

A good weld is a good weld... the TIG is better for doing fine sheet metal work... in the hands of a skilled welder. And TIG is really for the guy that wants to work with Stainless and Aluminum as well as mild steel (although you can weld both with the right MIG setup).

A TIG bead is easier to clean up than a MIG bead - but if you're not building a RIDLER car - who cares..

The key to either is not to make a cold weld with little or no penetration. I see many welds done and shown on this website that I wouldn't want to drive or ride in the car... and any experienced welder can see what I'm talking about.

Andy I currently do all my welding with a huge Miller mig setup. I do plan on getting a tig in the future, as Greg said, for sheetmetal work. I took metal fabrication classes, and was taught how to make sure welds penetrate correctly. I have some ugly welds on this chassis, but they are sound.

Here here finally someone else says it. I've thought that for years and seen lots of questionable welds on here and pro-touring.com now it's just because I fab and weld all day for work. so yes I'm picky but still can't agree more Greg

Brakes are done and bled. Clutch is bled...what a pain. I overlooked the fact that the slaves bleeder was up in the tunnel. I had to fab a wrench to even get to it, and then I couldn't get my bleeder tool on it, so had to do it old school. Put fuel tank back in next, and car will be a radiator away from moving under its own power.

Che70velle

I decided to put my clutch master here, instead of going with the "kit" that everybody runs. It was tricky, as it just misses my fuse block under the dash, yet is just below the cowl under the dash also. The angle it's at is no problem, as there will always be plenty of fluid in the reservoir. I've done one like this in the past with no problems, and yep, the fender will fit with no problems also.

Greg, I do like that website! Thanks for the linky. Unfortunately for me, I do everything the old school way, including my notches. I simply don't do enough tube notching to warrant me spending the coin, if you know what I mean, so I use a scribe to locate my pilot hole, then use a holesaw. It's a lot of wrist-breaking work, but it works for me.

My TIG is a Miller Dynasty 200 DX.... and it's been flawless. It's relatively small... and I built a cart that holds it and my Thermal Dynamics CutMaster 38 Plasma so the two machines don't take up much room.

Welders are like golf clubs --- a great golfer can hit any club in the bag - or borrow yours and still pound it. Welders are the same way - in the right hands a guy can weld anything well even with the bare bones machine.

I've said it before on Lat G ---- Nobody really "needs" a TIG machine... this is the last thing I'd buy for a home user. They're very expensive and they take lots of skills (all can be acquired with practice!). They're nice to have around and I prefer it over MIG. Once you can TIG - MIG is for farmers to repair a tractor. LOL But day in and day out - all anyone really needs is a GOOD MIG machine. I'd rather see someone buy a real decent machine that they'll have the rest of their life and it's useful.

A lift! OMG once you have one - there's no turning back!

A MIG -- with some skill a guy can do anything

A 2 or 2 1/2" Belt machine like the BurrKing 760... you have no idea how much this gets used!

A BIG - GOOD Compressor... first tool to buy in any situation.

A big - good - bead blast cabinet... another tool a guy doesn't need... until he owns one. Either buy one or find a friend with one!

A METAL heavy duty work table...

But a TIG isn't on the list of must owns.

Not really an update, per say, but more of a setback. I had a august 1st date with my painter, which I ALMOST made. No problem however, because my painter backed me up a couple of weeks. So I'm getting down to the wire with this deal, and I get my hood blasted to gain some time, because it had a really nice thick coat of red paint and clear coat. I spent an hour with my DA sander and basically scuffed the clearcoat. So off to the blaster it went, and came back RUINED. I'm talking as wavy the Atlantic. So, I scrambled, and picked up a new hood, and got it fitted. Not the end of the world, by any means. Done.
So I finished up some last minute wiring to get the car running, filled all my fluids, started the car and she sounds great. The car is up to temp, and I go to top off the coolant, and the radiator is full of a thick light brown foam that smells like oil. That's when I came to the realization that I'd broken the block when I was rebuilding it. I was torquing the last head bolt, and I heard the block ping, just before the torque wrench said stop. I got a little over zealous with lube and it bit me in a blind head bolt hole. I had known what I'd heard, but I'm an optimist. So...long story short, I have an LS2 block at the machine shop right now, and hopefully I can get this thing turned around quickly. Sad part is, the car was ready to drive, minus paint of course.

Ok, the new improved engine has been back in the car for a couple of weeks now, and sounds great. I ended up with an Ls2 block that I had a new sleeve put in, bored .010 over, decked, align honed with new ARP main studs, and new Mahle coated pistons. The original assembly was balanced, and all new bearings and gaskets. I had the l92 heads cut down and I kept my Mast camshaft and my VVT. What a hybrid mess! I went from 9.6:1 to 10.2:1, so that's worth a little power.
I've put the hood on the car for the LAST time, and it almost makes me tear up to type that. I'm 2 weeks away from a 3 year build, and my painter wants the car NOW, so I'm ready to get it to him. Yay for me!

Greg it's hard to tell from my grainy, lackluster ipad pictures, but the under hood items are done. Firewall is smoothed and done. Door jambs are done. Inner doors are done. Trunk jamb and under trunk is done. Roll bar in car is done. I painted all these items myself. All we have to do at the paint shop is the outer body only, which should go quickly (dare I say that), since hood, both front fenders and pass. side door skin are new, meaning a lot less blocking. Obviously the chassis was done and the bottom of the car was finished in a flat undercoating before I set them back together.
This car is drivable. Brake pedal is rock hard. Clutch feels great. Power steering is firm, yet easy to turn. I'm a little excited about this!

I try to go every month. I go with my friend and his dad. We get there by 8 usually. We're done by 9:30 or 10 so if you've got a busy day, it's easy to get it squeezed in. The show keeps going on though. There are plenty of people to talk with and most people are rather friendly and willing to talk. You could easily be there for a number of hours if you chose to.

For me, the best part is that anyone and anything can show up. There's no judging or entry fees. It really is more of a cruise in than anything else. Last month a couple Fiskers were there. A slew of modified Ruckus scooter showed up. The hella-flush crowd is usually there. Rat rods, some exotics, and muscle cars all over too. I love all inclusive shows/gatherings simply because you never know what you're going to see.

Just read this thread and I like it, great work.

Once you can TIG - MIG is for farmers to repair a tractor LOL But day in and day out - all anyone really needs is a GOOD MIG machine.

Gw,
WTF is this supposed to mean!?:twak:

I figured KEVIN might get a good laugh out of my "MIG is for Farmers" statement.

Guess what happened today? Yay!
This was scheduled for last fall, until my painter came by the shop to inspect what I thought was ready...I'm an electrician, not a painter...so after he showed me my shoddy work, I went back to blocking. During this endeavor I managed to hurt my rotator cup, so blocking got very slow. Then my father in law passed away, and paint got put on hold. Then winter showed up with a vengeance, so there you go. I did all the body work and pre-paint primer, my painter did help me get the front end sheet metal perfect, as well as the doors opening and closing like a new car, once we got it in the paint booth. I can drop the hood from 6", and she closes perfect. I'm amazed. HUGE thank you to my friend and painter Phillip Martin! We put stripes on it hopefully tomorrow, then cut and buff this week. Took me 3 years and 9 months to get to paint booth...

Stripes are on, cut and buff is done, and car is back in my shop. I had envisioned the stripes being a tad darker than my base color, but it wouldn't work out that way. They are a pearl and binder mix, layed over my base. At certain angles they go away, and at other angles they are there. Exactly what I was looking for. Some will like them...some will not. Anyway, I have a pile of new parts to bolt on this thing. It's a sprint to the finish line at this point. I'd love to drive it this fall. Got my new grille assembled and installed this evening. More to come!

Trim pieces are going on well. Doors are built, and done. Side glasses are adjusted perfectly, which is a chore. Headliner rails are stripped clean, and screwed back in. Headliner goes in next, then package tray, then front and back glass. I then wire lights, and finish interior. I have RideTech shocks coming with a dab of secret sauce, and I've decided to go with Global West front control arms, to improve front geometry. A set of Falken tires next week, and it's a driver before you know it. It won't be finished, just done for now. These are never finished...

I drove down into Atlanta to pick it up in my truck, (to save money on shipping...because I'm cheap...no I'm thrifty) and while in their showroom, I was probably the most excited I've ever been, while making a purchase. Bought some pieces of tubing from a company called Intakehoses.com
Very reasonably priced, actual carbon fiber stuff. I already had my filter, as it came with my Mast Motorsports ECM. They have the rubber connections, and clamps also, in many different sizes. I have some tube and stuff left over if anyone is interested...here's some pics

Che70velle
12-27-2015, 12:58 PM
I ran the tube into the fender, so the filter element stays out of the hot engine bay air, and built a close-out panel to help seal it off. I had to leave an opening in front of this panel, to access my headlights, for practicality.
I cut a 4" hole in the bottom of the inner fender, below the filter, to help pull in some cooler air, and made a diverter shield (scoop) to put over the bottom of it, on the bottom side, facing the bumper, to keep any splash water, or debris from the tire, out of the hole I made...
