Hey guys, though I'd post a few pics of my sons project. It's a Gen 5 Camaro SS hes been working on.
On the performance side:
It's been bored and stroked to a 418, 11.4.1 compression, heads massage by Lingefelter, GT11 Lingenfelter cam, CP pistons, Lunati crank and rods, Meizire Electric water pump, Innovators West 8 rid front drive, Turn One power Steering pump, Every freakin bolt inside and out has been replaced with ARP, Pure power billet oil filter, Katech tensioner, Improved Raving valley baffle, ported intake and throttle body, etc, etc...
On the attention to detail:
The entire block, both inside and out along with the cylinder heads have been completely grounded smooth. All the accessories front drive brackets and the motor mounts were completed sanded and powder coated in "Anthracite". The oil pan, valley tray and timing chain cover powder coated in texture black. The thermostat housing powder coated onxy, intake in a gun metal gray. The block, heads, alternator, ac compressor, power steering pump all sanded down of any casting and painted BMW "Frozen" gray It's a gun metal gray with flat clear). All the pulleys were given a brush finish. Ring Brother washer for the intake bolts and throttle body, Lokar dip stick, etc, etc ......
There is a lot more but you get the idea.
Here's a couple of pics:

Hey guys thanks for the props. I will have Nathan create an account when we get back from PRI next week (I will try to post pics from the show while there) and answer some of the questions asked. I think the Gen 5 front-drive is a great alternative and a economical option. The brackets are about $100 from the dealer. I also like the way it keeps everything down low as to not crowd the top of the engine.
Chris I can't wait to see what you come up with! Everything you do is top notch. You could probably tell there's a lot of your influence on these pics. Maybe Nathan can use some of your new stuff on his build.
Has anyone found part numbers for these brackets? I'm wondering if factory setup like this is available.
By the way, as everyone has said, it doesnt belong under a hood. Awesome job.
HEEP
A very inspiring piece. Any more shots of the lower 1/2?
I found this link to the brackets. I'm guessing that the reservoir for the power steering has been removed and you are using a separate one. Can you get me this information?
Thanks,

Hey guys Nathan here. As some of you might know, I'm the oldest of Al's three boys. What you might not know is I'm also the best looking, LOL. :D I hope my brothers don't read this. :_paranoid
First off, I just want to say I love this site and understand my first love is muscle cars. I've been a lurker here for a long time and have learned a lot from everyone. The other thing I've notice is all the folks here are TOP SHELF! So when I say thanks for the props, it means a lot to me coming from this community. I really appreciate it!!!!
At my Dad's suggestion, I created an account and hope I can contribute to the group.
I might start a build thread in the project section if thats OK. I know as a Gen 5 Camaro, it's outside Lateral-g's norm. Being we are all car guys, I think you guys would still appreciate the work I'm putting into it. Plus some of the stuff is relevant as it's an LS platform with Tremec trans. So you could say it would be more of an idea thread than anything else.
Maybe I'll call the thread "Braking the Lateral-G mold II", Hope you don't mind Brent, LOL
In the meantime, here is a quick background on the project. I've named the car "G5R". The G5 representing 5th gen and the R for racing. The theme is a racy, mechanical, industrial look while elegant at the same time. Part of my influence is Chris's "Blu Balls" build and Steve's "Bad Penny, Jame's "One Lap", Tenacity, etc, etc, etc,....... My ultimate goal is two fold, to build a decent handling car that I can take to the track with the attention to details you'd normally don't see in these cars.
Thanks again for the great site and more importantly, the great community of car guys,
Nathan
Do you have any pics before it was assembled after the parts were powder coated?
Garickman, here are some before and after..........
Before I had any of the pieces powder coated, I removed any casting seams, insignia, etc....
These are the factory motor mounts which look kinda cool for OEM. The one on the right is the before any sanding

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/024-5.jpg
Looks great! Are all the accessory mounts from a 5th gen Camaro?
Yes
Also, why is there a belt on the w/p if it's electric?
Has anyone found part numbers for these brackets? I'm wondering if factory setup like this is available.
Yes, you can get them from the dealer. All three are less than $100
HEEP
I found this link to the brackets. I'm guessing that the reservoir for the power steering has been removed and you are using a separate one. Can you get me this information?
Yes, I'm using a remote reservoir tank from Lee's Power Steering. It has cooling fins built into it. I will post pics later
Thanks,
HEEP
I will post a lot more pictures and answer the other questions I didn't get to later.

Nathan, what all did you use to do the sanding and grinding? I ask in case anyone else might want to follow in your foot steps later one. I know I'll follow to some extent with my LT1. I love the look of them stock so doing some clean up to the existing design appeals to me.
Also, did you send the powder coating out or do it yourself?

I had my local powder coater do them. I sent the intake to "Mike the Powder Coater" in GA. He has refined the art of powder coating composite.
I used several dremels with different bits to help me speed up the process. This way I didn't have to waist time changing bits for different applications.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/005-22_zps57ca8d20.jpg
I had to search high and low to find a tank large enough to Ultrasonically clean the block. I know the owner of a local racing transmission shop that has one, but it wasn't large enough. Before they spent $20,000 on their tank, they'd just hot tank the parts after machining. Even after cleaning the parts, when they'd dyno the trans, they'd check the filter and still find metal shavings! Which is the reason they bought the Ultrasonic Cleaner. In my case, I also felt a bit uneasy due to the fact that I could feel media from the blasting which could have potentially gotten into the valleys.
We also bored the cylinders 15 over which throw metal shaving everywhere. I wanted to make sure the block was surgically clean.
I called airports to see if they had one big enough and no luck. Finally, I found a race engine shop who had one and did it for me.

Here are a few more idea pictures.
I replaced the ugly factory radiator hose with something more aesthetically pleasing.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/010-7.jpg
I got this idea from Rogers 68 Camaro build. I recreated the water vapor line with XRP AN braided lines and fittings. The hose end that comes off the T fitting would go to the radiator but I'm redoing it. I'm welding a -3 90 degree fitting to the aluminum radiator tube to connect it there.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/034-3.jpg
I dremel down the injector connectors and got rid of all the fat that wasn't necessary for good clamping.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/134.jpg
I covered them with a 90 degree heat shrink boot to get a cleaner look.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/014-5.jpg
At one point, I was going to run individual hard lines to each injector. You can see the AN injector hat on top of the rear left injector.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/098-2_zpsbc48faec.jpg
But I looking to replace this intake. So I'm not looking to do any more R&D on it.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/096_zpse0000032.jpg
This is a cool idea which I haven't seen anybody do. Perhaps somebody here can take advantage and implement it on their own project.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/010-7.jpg
What are these radiator hose clamps and where are you getting them?
thanks

I'm interested in the long skinny bands that you are using. Where do you get them at? I've never seen the bigger "flap" discs either?
I make all my own sanding bits. I get that question asked a lot. I going to see about making a How To video of the process.

Those are constant tension clamps used in NASCAR. I got them from

Part of my goal is to drop as much weight as possible. I'm using a Mantic twin disc on the project. Part of the reason for my choice was weight saving. It's about 17 lbs lighter than stock.
I love the aluminum casing. Looks like something from a James Bond movie.

WOW Nathan, just WOW!!! You are indeed an inspiration to even someone as anal retentive and detail minded as myself!!!
I clicked the link on the constant tension clamps and saw the price, I almost spit coffee on my laptop keyboard, but then looked again and realized that the price was for a bag of 10 :_paranoid . Thanks for the link!!
Where I really lost it was the packaging on the Mantic clutch, that's over the top!!
Now, after seeing your bar-setting detail work and after working on my car for 6 years, I want to tear it apart and start all over!!!

From one anal retentive to another, I appreciate that, LOL.
I found this link to the brackets. I'm guessing that the reservoir for the power steering has been removed and you are using a separate one. Can you get me this information?
Thanks,

HEEP, this is the tank I'm Using. It's from Lee's Power Steering. The cooling fins have shown 40 degree temp drop in on the race track conditions.

Here's an update as to what I'm up to right now.
I had mentioned in an earlier post I will be using a complete Pfadt Racing suspension on the Camaro. I received my coilovers last week.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/IMG_3137_zpscbe06e41.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/IMG_3125_zps106ce580.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/IMG_3132_zps8bf58525.jpg
These things are so pretty that I felt I'd give some homage to the beautiful Pfadt colors,. I will be detailing the rack in the same colors.
Here is the game plan:
The orange circle represents the aluminum piece that will get anodized orange. It will need to get polished to clean up the casting.
The beige circle represents the steel housing that i will get painted to color match the anodizing on the coil overs housing color.
The red circles represents the seal plug and shaft which we will polish to a chrome finish.
The steel hard lines will be replaced with brushed stainless and black anodized AN fittings.
We sent out the four bolts and Clamp to get cad plated which will give them a soft goldish look.
The tie rods will get painted in a similar color as the gun metal color on the coil springs.
This will introduce a little interest in the engine bay. I also planning on powder coating the frame in the same gun metal gray on the coils. Should tie in really nice.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/1-25_zpse69562d4.jpg
I took it to Lee's for dis-assembly.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/065_zps70230472.jpg
This isn't my rack but it gives an idea of how I'm looking to redo the hard lines in stainless.

This is the same piece as in the picture above with all the lines connect in OEM raw
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/1-25_zps296e5510.jpg
I did this all by hand because it's hard to get a flat finish using the dremel and I wanted it to look like a piece of billet. It just took me 5 hours...

Marty, I really appreciate the props and I'm glad to hear we have one more 5th Gen enthusiast  The car is currently in pieces but I will post pics as I go. I'm currently welding all the holes in the engine bay. About 70 so far.
Here are a couple of pics of a little something I was working on today.
Because I'm using a remote tank, I didn't like the gap that was exposed between the back of the pump and cylinder head when I removed the factory tank that covers that section.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/031-8-1_zpsee92be7a.jpg
So I had the filler piece machine to fill the gap. It was hollowed out, so it barely weighs anything.

Hey guys!
Here is a quick update. I've been working on putting together my new sub frame. Since I had to take the factory sub apart to reuses the factory spindles and lower control arms, I figured I'd detail everything!
The picture below is a in progress comparison. So far, I've grinded most of the casting on the one on the right and hit it with my sand blaster. The red circle on the upright on the left highlights two more humps that I will also be grinding off. The one that has a bolt hole is to mount the back plate for the stock brakes, but since the stock brakes are going, there's no need for the extra ounces of aluminum, LOL... So I'm grinding it off.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/051_zpsdcd400b9.jpg
Again, still a work in progress. You can see where I have to still remove a little bit of the seams that's left.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/055_zps03a12d4c.jpg
Here you can see a side by side comparison of all the factory casting bumps I removed.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/046-1_zps2ccb3ef6.jpg
Once I was completely happy with removing all the factory casting, I polished them to a mirror finish. (reference the one on the left)
Next, I taped off the areas where bolts are going through. I didn't want to paint to those areas and deal with the paint getting jacked up when I'd tighten the bolts.
I sanded blasted them one more time to create paint adherence. (reference the one on the right)
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/3-23_zpsf5769f02.jpg
Next came a light coat of etching primer
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/046-1_zps9d8e6996.jpg
And finally, I spray them with some Seymour Alumi Blast paint from a rattle can.

I figured I'd post an update update before heading out to the garage this morning.
We had our street wheels setup mounted (on the tires, not the car, LOL, as it will be a while since my cars in a millions pieces right now!) I think the titanium color will play off the white nicely.
10.5" BBS Ch-r all the way around on Nitto Invos 315 rear and 295 fronts.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/1-25_zps4632f153.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/3-23_zpsb45ecf74.jpg
Also received a few carbon pieces.
Most carbon hoods for the Gen 5 Camaros are made just for the "BLING" factor. They are only carbon on the outside and glass on the underside for economic reasons. They end up weighing more than our factory aluminum hood. This hood is dry carbon designed for racing and carbon on both sides. This one is less than half the weight! This is one step closer to the goal of ridding 400 lbs.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/4-24_zps77383843.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/6-19_zps8246a84e.jpg
The weave is close to perfect as can be!
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/5-19_zpsda2aed9b.jpg
We are also having other pieces recreated in carbon, ZL1 rear spoiler, rockers, front splitter, shark fin, rear diffuser.
The Leno Camaro is somewhat of an inspiration to the build, hence the reason for the BBS. I am also working on a wheel package for the track that will be about 40 lbs lighter!
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/01-leno-camaro-sema_zps40a34658.jpg

I am replacing the SS rear lower control arms with the updated ZL1s. This will allow me to run Pfadt Racing new ZL1 bars. While I'm waiting for the bars, I felt the GM arms just weren't up to par.
You can see in this picture where the lines are all jagged. I used the blue pin striping tape to outline the amount being removed.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/1-25_zps48ee614d.jpg
You can see it was also covered with splatter.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/3-23_zpsf813a933.jpg
And had these machine markings on the sides.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/4-24_zps088001b3.jpg
Well, after some sanding and some more sanding, we got them smooth.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/5-19_zps4ff614b1.jpg
Here's a quick comparison of before and after. You can see it's now more symmetrical.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/aa-2_zps1cc78a6a.jpg
Perhaps the fabricators on here can help me with this one.
This is the rear trailing arms package I will be using from Pfadt Racing.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/RCASet1_zps204df694.jpg
I was toying with the idea of making some cut outs on the control arms to replicate the Pfadt pieces. I did this quick deal to get an idea.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/054-2_zps17ea71c0.jpg
My concern is I don't want to weaken them to where they will flex. One idea is to box them or perhaps create filler pieces for the cut out. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys I am really backed up on the posting! I will be posting some more later this week.
In the meantime, here is a quick update: In the quest to reaching the goal of ridding 400 lbs off Project G5R, we are leaving no stone unturned. One of these being the oem battery which weighs in at 45 lbs. We chose a lithium battery from the Lithium Pros. This mod alone will shave 30 lbs off the car.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/2-24_zps7056a3ac.jpg
This battery is used mostly for racing applications. it comes with an internal computer to manage and preserve the life of the battery.
Here is an exert from Jegs web site:
Lithium Products L3400 lithium Powerpack batteries are lightweight racing batteries designed for road course, asphalt Circle Track, drag racing, and dirt track use with alternators. A unique feature of these specific batteries is the use of the batteries' full battery management system. The main function of the BMS is to protect the batteries' battery pack.

You can see it was also covered with splatter.
And had these machine markings on the sides.
Well, after some sanding and some more sanding, we got them smooth.
Here's a quick comparison of before and after. You can see it's now more symmetrical.
Perhaps the fabricators on here can help me with this one.
This is the rear trailing arms package I will be using from Pfadt Racing.
I was toying with the idea of making some cut outs on the control arms to replicate the Pfadt pieces. I did this quick deal to get an idea.
My concern is I don't want to weaken them to where they will flex. One idea is to box them or perhaps create filler pieces for the cut out. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!
What you can do is have an over lay piece with the shape and designs laser cut into it then weld these pieces to the existing uncut arms. You can even inlay carbon fiber into the recessed areas. Similar to this bell crank we did.
Might be time consuming to do. Also increase the weight of the part.

Al,
What Nathan and your sons have done with this build is amazing and the accolades given are well deserved!
As a father of college age kids I think there is a more impressive, more important manifestation in this build. You, Al should be so proud that you have raised the boys (not sure how many children you have) to be so grounded, patient and thankful for what they have and what they can accomplish. In a time of instant gratification, entitlement and "buying" the best, video games etc... your sons are taking the road less travelled in this generation. This is a huge complement to you and your family. Rare is the teenager or twenty something that will take the time, dedication and focus (and the work done requires a lot of each!) to accomplish such an amazing goal and product, one small step at a time.
You should be proud and the boys should be also. Your family exemplifies what has made this country great and seeing this continues to reinforce the good that is out there.
Sincerely
Peter

Just received all new replacement glass from Optic Armor. This is really neat stuff as its 50% lighter than OEM and 250% stronger. I didn't realize that this is the same stuff Ring Brothers use on some of their build. The other benefit is that your losing the weight from the top lowering the center of gravity.

We almost decided to keep them like that. But to keep with the theme, we started monkeying with them. I took a pic of them side by side, polished and brushed. We both agreed that we like the brushed look better.

Here is a pic of the new custom flex-a-lite radiator with our custom fan shroud mounted on it.
39612
the first fan shroud we made had some incorrect measurements. Made another one, and measurements were still wrong .... As the saying goes, third times a charm, and thus the third shroud finally fits perfectly. On Monday I'll get the fan mounts welded to the shroud, and call it done for now. we need to test fit it in the engine bay to make a bracket for the rad to mount to. Once that's done, we'll powder-coat the shroud.

I also has to give props to Cris from JCG! He took 3 hours of his time Saturday morning to the boys and I come by. He reviewed the progress of the project and what still needs to get done to complete it by SEMA. He gave the boys realistic advice and gave them a game plan. In addition, he is going to help them with some custom pieces to take the project to the next level. Some of the stuff will cross pollinate with first gen, so stay tuned.
The attention to detail of what Cris does is just at another level. Check out this neat replacement check valve for the master. It replaced the ugly plastic piece with this piece of functional art! He will also be doing a billet replacement reservoir tank for the master with a built in separate reservoir for the trans.

Chris is one of the Nice guys in this industry. He loves what he does and is more then happy to help others. Heck I called him and asked him if I could borrow his wheel tool that Mario had and without even taking a second to think about it he said sure no problem. Chris only knows me from this board and yes I have bought a few things from him. But to lend a $2500.00 tool to a stranger from Chicago say's a lot about his character.
I look forward to all of the post from JCG on this BB & on Facebook. He does some outstanding work and the best part he finishes his customer cars and doesn't break their bank.

Thank you for the props Marty!
He does some outstanding work and the best part he finishes his customer cars and doesn't break their bank.
ps looks like I am going to be ordering up this check valve for my car.
Incredible work, can't wait to see more. Way to go, guys!
This reminded me of a video we shot several years ago of the Rad Rides crew cleaning up the block on the Ridler car. This was the first time I had ever seen anyone block-sanding an cylinder head...

Here is a neat piece that came in yesterday from New Zealand. It's meant for the Holden's but with some mods, it will work great on the project.

Normally these cars have an intake that makes an 90 degree bend from the TB to an air box on the drivers side. The wanted to have a true ram air effect, so this one will sit over the radiator and under the core. To make it work, the section mark off in the picture will need to be removed and boxed in.
What you don't see anymore in this pic are the 100 or so holes they've welded in on the frame rails and other sections.
40359
You can see in this pics all the holes that hadn't gotten welded in yet. The over hang was also cut out (Still on in this picture) and now they are in the process of making a flat fire wall. I will say that it's not easy making these engine bays look good.
40360
This is the same intake used on a race series in NZ and AU.

Hey Jeff, can't wait to see your car in person, sounds like your pretty close.
Here are a few pics of some of the work they did.
In order to make room for the intake, the rad support needed some massaging. They cut out a portion of the center section to make room.

Here is a quickie of what going on at the other end. A lot of work has gone into the trunk cutting, slicing and dicing. Goten rid of something like 50 lbs of metal all together. I will post more pics later but here is a quick shot of the panel. Received the billet trunk hinges, they will also save a few ounces, LOL. I will post pics later.
The logo will have a brush finish while the panel and the rest of the trunk will be done in a satin gun metal. Thinking of doing a carbon panel for the divider.

Thanks guys! What they lack in experience they are making up in innovation. What till you see what they are up to next.
Here are a few progress pics. My buddy Kevin at HM Racing Design helped the boys with the roll bar and bumpers. They specialize in $500,000 Trophy trucks, so this was a cake walk for them.
Replaced the front and rear bumper which are made from sheet metal with chromoly tubing and dropped over 30 lbs.
41397
41398
They also tied in the mounting points for the rad off the new bumper. From the inside of the engine bay, the rad will have a floating look to it.
41399
41400
Since they got rid of the rear seat, they were able to mount the main hoop on the ledge were the rear seat would normally be. This allowed to set it back were you can't see it from the side view. All the other bars we've seen, come off the floor by the front seats, so they are always visible.
41407
41401
Check out how the down bar came down just above the rear solid mount. The secondary bar fall right above the strut mount solidifying the rear section. Finished it up with a gusset and small dimple.
41402
For future planning, they welded in the mounting plates for the front down bar in case they want to go the a full cage down the road.
41403
Filler panel for passenger side of the firewall. This is were the factory cabin filter use to be.
41404
Gas filler is being relocated to the trunk.
41405
This is a preview of things to come. They have gotten rid of 30 lbs of metal bracing that was there to support the rear seats.

Thanks Wayne, pushing to get it done for SEMA. Going to be Line-Xing the entire floor panel next.
The boys did a tremendous amount of work for something that will look so simple in the end. Creating a flat firewall on the driver side.
Here is a pic of the original engine bay. The red circle represent studs (total of 11 studs) that were sticking out about an inch through the firewall into the engine bay. These studs are welded to the plate that hold the buster and pedal assembly.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/4_zps3c098fea.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/AL7319/media/4_zps3c098fea.jpg.html)
In order to create a flat firewall driver side, the first step was to cut off the studs off the plate.
Next they had to come up with a way to mount the plate to the firewall.
Seth made the template for what would become a ring the shape of the hole.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/1_zps566cbd31.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/AL7319/media/1_zps566cbd31.jpg.html)
Next came cutting the shape out on the plasma cutter
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/2_zps6d63793f.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/AL7319/media/2_zps6d63793f.jpg.html)
Nathan cleaning out the edges.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/3_zps8fc9e452.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/AL7319/media/3_zps8fc9e452.jpg.html)
They cut the heads off the bolts and here they used the plate as a fixture to weld the bolts to the ring.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/6_zpsfcb0a46c.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/AL7319/media/6_zpsfcb0a46c.jpg.html)
There's was about another 20 more steps to get to where they welded the ring
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/5_zps189354e2.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/AL7319/media/5_zps189354e2.jpg.html)
The holes were use to rosette weld the ring to the firewall.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/008_zpsfc82bed5.jpg (http://s1231.photobucket.com/user/AL7319/media/008_zpsfc82bed5.jpg.html)

Finally, they welded the ring to the firewall with the stud now facing the cabin. Next on the list is making a carbon fiber firewall.

Thanks for the compliment as that high praise indeed! But, I'm not sure about that as Mike and Jim always discourage them at SEMA not to do what they do but do encourage them to go to school. Nathan and Justin are both engineering majors. Justin wants to go in to the suspension design. Nathan wants to be the next golden boy in Silicone Valley
Wow! So many little details.
Thanks Wayne, they wish they had more time before SEMA to do more but time is working against them.

Thanks Mike for the props. They were going to go with Raptor but we saw a truck where the whole body was shot with Linex and the consistency was incredible. Your right on the weight gain but we're thinking no more than a couple of pounds.

Thanks D, it is kinda cool that they will be keeping our hobby going forward in the future.
Here is a quick update. I have got to give all the credit to Justin on this one as this has been his pet project.
Over the past several days he's been working on a close out panel for the trunk to separate it from the interior since we lost the rear seats. This stuff has taken time. lots of it. It is one of those things that though it may look pretty simple, not many people realize how much time and effort is put into it. Here are some pics.
The template was the first step. Hours of fitting, checking, trimming, trashing, cutting, checking, trimming, you get the idea... the driver and passenger sides were not identical as well so had to do a separate template for each side.
41724
Hand cut the panels from the template
41725
Made two bends to comply with the frame it will sit against in the trunk.
41726
Next came carving out the bezel. Your not going to believe this but he did a lot of the work with a $6.99 set of files from Harbor Freight.
41727
We had a sheet of carbon made by APR performance. These guys specialize in wings and aero. They will be making one for G5.R. This has got to be the largest piece of flat carbon in the "UNIVERSE". That was for you GW, LOL
41719
Here is a close up.
41723
Tracing the template.
41720
After some online research, he found the best way to cut this carbon was with a jig saw and a carbide blade.
41721
here a mock up. Next in line will be drilling the counter sunken holes and bolting.
41722
On a different note, the steering wheels is being sent to get completely redone at DCT. These guys do amazing work, mostly for exotics, lambos, Ferrari, etc.
GW this is a wheel they did for a R8. I think it would look killer on your car.

Well, cars is off to paint. There is no kidding, over 10 days of skimming, sanding and primer in the engine bay. They even skimmed the inside of the fire wall were the filler panel was welded in. There more hours in the trunk than I can count. Every single spot weld has been smooth.
The boys are thinking of going with the same color as the Z/28 concept. What do you guys think?

Satin white should look good. One option that I saw last weekend that really surprised me was a satin clear wrap over a gloss color. Easier to spray and (in theory) maintain since you don't have to repaint panels if something gets scratched or polished.

I agree, it is a nice color! The biggest challenge is getting the paint code.

Rick, that is the biggest concern that would be reason for hesitating going with it.

Standing out at SEMA is a consideration. Blood red was considered but living with the car after SEMA is the biggest consideration and white just fits these car well.

We looked at some satin whites wraps and they look really nice. The down side is because of the body mods, the car needs to be painted before wrapping as the primer would show through. So painting to wrap didn't make sense.
Because of the maintenance issue with satin, we are leaning more towards a pearl white. I gues the biggest reason for the pearl is just to be different. If your going to spend thousands of dollars to repaint the car, you might change it at least a little so folks know it's not a factory job. I personally love the factory white. Specially if done right like RS's Innovator.

Life is like that though and everyone learns differently and at different time. As you and Al have mentioned, these brothers haven't done anything like this before and that's part of the story. Quite possibly to coolest part of the story. I think I'd be sure to have that in part of the write up/display information. I think it might help encourage people young and old. Be sure to let us know when the car's going to be featured in the magazines as I'm sure it will be.

I was using some files yesterday --- and got to thinking to myself about what an underrated tool they are! I (and this will be a big statement) don't think 90% of the people picking one up, know how to use them properly.
I was taught by a guy that did pick and file work - and lead work - at my first job at Gateway Body and Fender... when I was 13.
I remember at School, then we got an Iron "cut-off" each, that we could only use a file to make a certain length and be perfectly square before we could move on, then we had to mill it according to blueprints in a "stair-pattern" and then drill/mill holes With specific Width, lengths, depths and such. When done, it was over to the lathe :) Good way to learn the basics and train, now I dont know anything.. Ha..Ha.. :D

She was dropped yesterday to get the custom exterior finished. As you can see G5.R is in good company (Two Bentleys in front and a Merc on the side) These guys specialize in Bentleys, Rolls and all the other exotics. The funny thing is that they were all exited about the American iron project, LOL.

Thanks!
Have a set of Forgeline track wheels being cut for the track. BBS are very nice but are a bit too heavy at 29lbs a piece for track use. 20 by 10.5 all the way around and will make for a good street package.
The new Forgelines are 19 by 11 square set up with very aggressive fitment. These are about 9 lbs. lighter than the BBS per corner, and a crazy 12lbs(front) and 16lbs (rear) lighter than stock each! They will also be able to rotate them from front to back extending tire life. Tire selection is looking like the Toyo R888 305 all around.
Here's a picture from topspeed of the wheels

Being that we are all enthusiasts, you guys more than anybody can relate to the disappointment and let down thats taken place. Thanks guys for the kind words. In summary, the paint shop promised the car done in two weeks. That would have left 3 weeks to put the car back together. They took 4 weeks leaving only one week and no way of getting it running.
Race Ramps didn't though it would be an inconvenience pushing the car onto the ramps so they are using a Cadillac instead.
Kinda took the wind out of the boys but they are dusting them self off and regrouping. Pace was slow down to a more relax level and they are moving on.
Here are a couple of pictures with the mock up plastic engine. It is quite unfortunate that G5.R didn't get to debut as it's looks menacing and will be a great performer considering it's about 4 to 500 lbs lighter and 150 more HP than the upcoming Z/28.
It was also going to debut a new twin plenum intake made from composite that looks killer. The manufacture was having a rapid prototype cut at the expense of about $10,000 just to have it on the car. I wish I could show you guys pics.

From inside the engine bay, the radiator appears to be floating as you can't see any brackets. The shroud in the picture is a mock up. The final version is much nicer, it was made by Derale specifically for G5.R.

Here is a little neat deal they did to the stock intake. Took some HP Sticky shield from Heatshieild Product and used it on the bottom of the intake to reduce the radiant heat off the engine.

World’s Prettiest LS3?
If the old adage “God lives in the details” is true, than Nathan Moreno has built quite a shrine in this LS3 motor that ultimately will find its way back home to his Gen 5 Camaro. This thing is a razor sharp take on state of the art engine porn and seems a shame to be tucked under the hood of a car. The motor was recently posted on Lateral-G with quite a laundry list of high tech hardware.
Along with a displacement bump to 418 cubic inches, this LS3 is sporting a ported intake and throttle body, 11.4:1 compression ratio, Lingenfelter cam and heads, Lunati crank and rods, CP pistons, Pure Power billet oil filter, Innovators West 8 rib pulley and Turn One power steering.
Nathan must have gone through a lot of die grinder abrasives after all the smoothing and finishing that went into this build. Working with a gray, tone on tone color pallete consisting of BMW “Frozen” gray, gunmetal and anthracite, the result a high tech pin up that takes more than one viewing to appreciate. The carbon fiber valve covers are just the right garnish for the top of the motor and Nathan even manages to make the composite intake manifold look cool.
In the meantime, we’ll keep you posted on when this gasoline DaVinci is reunited with Moreno’s Camaro. Until then, put a glass table top on it and let mere mortals pay homage at the shrine.

Modified the Derale brackets that came with the cooler. The PS and Engine cooler brackets were welded together and fab up some end brackets to mount them onto the custom rad support.

One of the proverbial "two step back scenario" of the project has been the roll cage. After having it mostly completed, the boys sat in the car to check the head room clearance only to conclude there wasn't enough for comfort. We studied multiple Camaro cages at PRI including the factory COPOs, they all have very little head room. So the boys are ripping out the entire cage and start all over again. This time the factory head liner wont be a consideration. The cage will run as close to the body as possible. This should give them about 6 inches of clearance. None of the cage will be visible as it will be hidden under a custom suede headliner and interior panels.

Plumbing up the whole deal... engine, trans, ps, diff coolers, radiator, fuel, brakes, catch can, vacuum lines, etc...... is a lot of work.
This was pretty cool. Instead of using a clamp to hold the vacuum line, the boys removed factory press in tube and replace it with a AN fitting.

Absolutely beautiful work! The attention to detail is insane!
I just have one quick suggestion with the position of the MAF -- I had mine about that close to the throttle body and was told that when the TB blade closes if the MAF is mounted to close, the turbulence is forced back through the MAF resulting in inaccurate readings/single sent to the PCM. It needs at a minimum of 9" to 12" to avoid this.

Over 9 lbs of wires remove off the interior harness alone.
This is the accessory harness. You can see how it is now routed through the frame instead of the engine bay.

He's been in the business over 25 years, and specializes in Trophies trucks where those harness are just over the top. He worked at Alpine at one point where they made those custom SEMA cars. Hot Rods and Custom Stuff uses him as their go-to guy for all of their wiring. So for any home builder or Pro shop looking for a great guy, Eric is your man as he is mobile and does works in all the west coast states.
Here is another one of those cool little details. Notice how the water vapor line now goes into the radiator tube instead to the actual radiator. Next the radiator cap will be welded into the tube also. Lot's of thoughts and work into this tube!
