This is mental !!!!! I am finishing my 66 GTO protour wth Ls3 and people are prasing me. Fack my car ! You guys have depressed me massively, I want to stab myself in the neck ..lol
Please Nathan, anyway you can post a simple step by step (highlevel)
of how you did the motor and paint, I have gone through the forum. But something consolidated for "numpties" like me would be extremely grateful.
I am pulling my motor in November and doing the exact same, imitation is the greatest form of flattery ..
Please email me steps to my gmail please or post for the engine, just want the esthics part, the paint codes ? the sanding required ? all the paints used on the headers and rest, have 430 to wheel 515 at crank, happy with that. (

Link to my weak build compared to yours ! Lovely work man !!!!!!

PS - how much horse and torque you have in that LS3 ?

Good question.... I thought I would smooth out my intake while I had the motor out and cant seem to figure out how to gen in all the cracks even using the sandpaper cones.

It is! Is there any info what kind of low speed / street manner it has? Can it be used with stock cam ?
I'll see if Jamie (Owner of OZMO) can jump in and give some feedback.

Robbie thanks for the props, we haven't dyno it yet but are hoping for 600 range on HP.

Nathan has done a complete how to in another forum. Here is the link: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188393
Jamie sent me some pics of a first gen that has the same intake but with the shorter runners.

Should be interesting to see how the longer runners will look.

Al asked if I could respond to this question regarding the intake manifold: We designed this intake primarily for street guys who want good midrange torque, whilst still maintaining high flow for high HP.
Anytime you make a change to the heads or intake, a custom cam should be specified for maximum performance. That said, the runner length on this intake is only about 1" shorter than a stock GM LS7 manifold and will work well on a stock cam.

Thanks, to be honest, mostly just sweet equity and attention to details going on here. There's some pics of the car in the thread.
Speaking of details......
The plastic factory PS tank wasn't in keeping with the rest of the project so a CV kit was ordered.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319041/Untitsssled_zps07722170.png
The kit brings two sets of bracket to giving different mounting options. Unfortunately neither of the two brackets worked with the fifth gen setup.
So it was decided to mount the tank remotely. Unfortunately again the piece the tank mounts to was to short to mount it to the shock tower. So it had to be extended.
My buddy at HM Racing and Design milled a piece to weld onto the CV piece.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319040/001_zpsc1aa3681.jpg
The two pieces were then welded together. The back side was given an angle cut to match the slope of the shock tower. Holes were drilled at the same angle as the shock tower so that the bolts would sit flush to the sheet metal.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319040/IMG_5521_zpsa2c57776.jpg
Finally the boys smooth it out so it would like look like it came that way from CV.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319040/IMG_5527_zpsbc70ff99.jpg
And finally the almost finished product.Still need to get anodized.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319041/008_zpsd95220be.jpg
Lot of work went into making something look so simple. What I covered was just the high lights.

Thanks guys for the interest! The boys have been busy! Both Nathan and Justin are taking the summer off from UCSD to get the car finished.
Justin flew to Wisconsin Wednesday and will be there for two weeks. He is helping Craig at Xtreme get the rear cradle done. Here are couple of pictures of the rear frame rails being mockup up.

The new OZMO and NW TB are in. Jamie (Owner) said it's his favorite intake. The boys are still giving it their touch". Some guys can't leave well enough alone, LOL. Jamie is also milling a billet valley plate. Should be here in a week or so.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319069/IMG_6075_zps317168b1.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319069/IMG_6070_zpsc31146d8.jpg
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319069/IMG_6067_zpsd8d0af17.jpg
The lines on the reservoir were replaced with crimped end for a cleaner look. (See the pictures on the top of the page to compare the difference)
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319069/IMG_6078_zps5324d81e.jpg
One of the implication with the new intake is the TB now sits higher and further forward. This created to steep of an angle downward from the TB to the air intake for the shorter distance. The solution is to push engine back 2" and lower it 1". The domino effect is that the radiator hose, motor mounts, trans mount, exhuast cross bracing, drive shaft will need to be modified. Currently the headers are the lowest point under the car. They sit about an 1.5" below the frame rail. To compensate for the engine drop a new set custom one off headers and exhuast setup is also part of the plan. When done the frame rails will be the lowest point.
Seems like a lot of work but the added benefit will be the transfer of weight. Craig explained as a rule of thumb in racing every inch takes 100 lbs off front It might actually just be 75 lbs but 100 lbs is the rule of thumb. Lowering the center of gravity which should help.
Still waiting on a few parts to start on version 2.0 of the track inspired engine. Drive sump pan, pump and dampener are in. Just waiting on the new track inspired cam and TD rockers. The Lingenfelter LS3 heads might also get replaced with Trick Flow new casting. Pat G likes them better the the Mast.
Bill Dailey recommended to use two separate inline filter. A 75 micron from the pump to the tank. A 25 micron from the cooler to the engine. Justin design on Auto-CAD these cool clamps to mount one on each frame rail. The brackets follow the contour of the rails and the filters appear to be siting on the top of the actual rails.

Incredible looking and I can't wait to see the rendering.
So what will be the final color of the outside of the car ?
Marty the car was already repainted in the factory Summit white last year. This is were it got held up in paint jail, hence why we didn't make SEMA. Since we are updating the look, we will have to paint the new 2014 trunk, rear bumper, hood, front bumpers and rockers. Since all the ZL1 carbon stuff is now being replaced with Z/28 parts, rear spoiler, diffusers, flares, front splitter, hood insert and the carbon roof, those will also need to get satin clear. So in essence we will be redoing everything other than the quarters, doors, and front fenders.
i love this photo. perfect balance of color, finish, and texture.
Thanks Mike! Tom and Ted from Derale came by on Saturday to discuss SEMA display and mentioned as much as the picture show, it a must see in person.
Regarding Dan's attention to detail, he is replicating the Forgeline in CAD! I thought the prelims were already incredible!

Dry sump plumbing time. The tank will need to notched into the frame rail for clearance. Breather is going on the other by the opposite to the brake booster to balance out both sides. All tanks (dry sump, breather, brake booster, PS, catch can and over flow) are getting anodize gray for continuity. Peterson used 5356 welding rod for the sump and breather tanks as normal welding rods will anodize in a different color and look funky.

Unfortunately its going to take two weeks to get the plates water jet so Justin wont be able to be able to complete the cradle in the three weeks he allotted to be in Wisconsin.
.
2 weeks for water jetting? Where is this in Wisconsin? I know a couple places that might be able to get it done sooner.

Justin modified the DSE motor mounts to allow for a 2" set back and 1/2" drop.

Dailey's dry sump is in.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319087/241_zpsa157937b.jpg
The dry sump tank was being mounted on the front right wheel well. Space was a a premium as the tire was hitting the tank when clocked inward. To gain 1" of clearance between the tank and tire required notching the tank, eliminating the mounting bracket and direct mounting it the frame rail.

The trans mount needed to move back 2" and 1/2" back also. The was done by simple creating a 1/2" thick spacer that also relocated the mounting points.

Katech is making a new set of valve covers for G5.R that won't have the bolts for their coil bracket as there's no need. They're also removing the filler caps since it's now dry sump, and lastly, they are also relocating the PCV NPT female fittings to the back of the valve covers, making for a really clean look. They sent us a set of the black anodized billet caps that go around each bolt so that we can strip and finish them to our liking. Part of the reason we didn't want the caps to be black is because the ones on the current carbon valve cover have now turn purple and look like crap.
Here they are before the anodizing remover was poured in. Anybody interested in the product, let me know and I will post the info. It was really good stuff.

Even faster is CRYSTAL DRANO sold in a small can -- Home Depot etc --- put some in a plastic bucket --- add some water... put parts on some kind of wire and dip 'em... I use a clear plastic bucket so I can watch them boil -- because when you get the mix right --- it's friggin' boiling! And the anodize comes off in seconds... Rinse 'em off... and you're ready to polish or paint or whatever you're doing.

We were considering the MAST heads as part of the engine rebuild. After speaking with Patrick Guerra who spec the new road coarse inspired cam, he suggested if we were looking for a superior head, to look at the newer Trick Flow LS3 255. He said they have an LS7 chamber which moves the intake valve away from the chamber wall which reduces valve shrouding and improves hp a great deal.
I will be interesting to see were we end up power wise.
The only bad part is having to remove all the casting to make these smooth as it's a lot of work!

Trey I wouldn't call it a rebuild as much as an upgrade. The short block will stay intact. Just changing the cam, wet to dry sump, heads, and intake. Ascetically, replacing the current CF valve cover with a new set of Katech CF covers specific for this build. Just the proverbial snow ball effect, LOL

You can see how much cleaner the C pillar loos when compared to what we started with.

OK guys need a little input if you will. We are trying to figure which product to use for the flooring as a heat shield. Theses two products come from Thermotec. The gold give a flavor of super car stuff. The thing is the sliver lends itself to sit better and doesn't tend to crease like the gold does. So should we go for the high end look of the gold and the better fitting silver? The aluminum will handle radiant temp of 2000 degrees and the gold 1800.

stick to the functional silver.....but i do looove goooolld
Silver, keep the punters looking for all those beautiful body mods.
I like the silver and take a look at DEI stuff as it is not only heat but Sound. So you get the best of both worlds.

We are going to go with the silver.
Our resident suspension engineer "Justin" is in Pennsylvania at Penske hand assembling the racing shocks for G5.R right along with the tech assembling the Formula One shocks.

So is he getting college credits for this ??
Not sure Marty but he should! Both Nathan and Justin will be attending a racing program were they get to build a mini Formula One race car. So they should be a big contribution the the team.
The shocks are made and hes flying back. He is so exited on how much he learned while at Penske!

On G5.R the rear cradle is finish. Haven't weight it yet to see what the weight different is but I can tell you you can curl this one with one arm. The factory cradle needs two people to carry it and your huffing it.

Being that these are not being made to turn a profit, nothing but the highest quality parts are being used. As an example, prices on rod end range from $20 to $120. These are on the top end side.

Thanks guys!
Unfortunately we wont be making SEMA as the car got hung up on the paint side again this year. Last year we didn't make SEMA for the same reason as we only had two weeks left by the time it got out of paint. Basically it needs a complete repaint as all the panels have battle scars from the working on it. Which kinda suck as $7,500 was blown on last years paint job. We were hoping to have it repainted by now but our time schedule hasn't lined up. To redo it with the time we have left would mean rushing it the rest of the build and that lesson was already learned once.

Bummer on the Sema thing and wrapping the car is not a bad idea since you plan to race it. It will actually protect the car to some degree.

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement! We looked into wrapping but it last year as a possible solution but the car still needed to be painted as the wrap will show if there areas the are primered. It will even show the orange peel through the wrap.

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319161/016_zps67f4c3c3.jpg
With the concern for cracking under stress, the seams were cleaned and stitch welded and finally reskimming the smooth.

OK as the "UNIVERSE" series continues, we didn't want to have the bolts feeling like they were the only one who didn’t get any love, LOL.
Just spent 20 plus hours doing every single bolt on the car.
I'm not sure how to embed this video. Maybe Jody can do it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a99tCPA87tw
So here is the process we put them through. The bolt on the left has all the steps. First, it was sand blasted (this first step gives the nickel and satin finish). Secondly, nickel plated. Third, the head was drilled to give it a counter sunk look. By drilling the hole after nickel plating, it gives the bolt a two tone look as the hole goes back to a stainless finish. Finally the stainless hole was hand polished. Hope you followed all of that.

We redid the water vapor lines to include the rear ports also. The Trick Flow heads have the port open so we figure instead of plugging them, we would just do all four. The LS1 would have all for port vented from factory. Cylinder 7 would tend to run hot. The LS3 not so much, so only the front are vented. We figure,, what the heck, just extra piece of mind.
Here is what we came up with.
53659
53660
Trans and diff cooler lines almost done. Still need to adopt a i line thermostat and filter. There was a lot of head scratching to come up with the best solution on what fittings to use to make everything flow.

Stainless brake lines are almost done, thats on the to do for today.

Here is another nifty tool we wish we had when the project got started. It allows you to drill consistent counter sink holes as you can dial in the stopping point. This would have been of great help when we’re doing the aluminum bezels. We are going to use it to drill the holes for the windshield and rear glass.

We have to thank Dan again for revising the final vission of G5.R. We loved the white but with so many of them in white, we felt we would need to do something a little different. Also remove the bars off the lower grille and recess it further in. Same thing with the upper and converted the fog light pods to brake ducts.

Justin figure out a way to installed the hood latches without having the cut out open the bottom side of the hood to access nuts that hold down the Aerocatch like you see in the picture below.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319185/HP3_zpsje8gyqvz.jpg
Basically, its a billet bezel that has a tap for the screws to insert into, eliminating the need for nuts. The two studs are mounted to the bezel. they allow you to hold the bezel in place as you bolt the latch into the bezel. Once the bolts are installed, you remove the studs and install the two remaining bolts. The bezel sandwiches the catch without any nuts.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319184/005_zps7wslfzrg.jpg
The only thing you'll see from the bottom of the hood is the 1/2" hole for the pin.

Interior work:
Since the car is now a none AC/radio, the idea was to remove any GM hint that it ever came with these features.
Radio and AC face plate mods: The idea was to clean up the face plate and give it a floating effect.
To give it that effect, the face plate mounting points were cut off.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319184/1_zpshxm7psuu.jpg
Next, all the AC and radio control were shaved

http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319186/2%202_zpsxgg6q9wz.jpg

Replaced all the GM electronics. The gray box is Racepak's Smartwire which replaces all the fuse box and relays, plus it controls all the body functions. Its a really cool piece. It also cut down your wiring to about half. The red box is a mock up of Racepak’s G2X Data logger. The black box is Holley's Dominator EFI ECU.

Absolutely beautiful!!! I hope you make SEMA too, as i would love to see it in person....re the hood latches, on the 1/2 hole on the underside of the hood, you may need to clearance that a little more to compensate for the angle of the hood hinges (unless A- you are going lift off only or B- your angling the red male "receiving pin".
I had to on my 70, and now its getting redone in c/f as well...

Thanks, we hope the clock doesn't run out on us.
As far as the hood pins, there so much though that went into just something that would seem so simple.
All of the install we've seen, the pin is just mounted on the rad support were the factory rubber bump stop goes. The challenge is it positions the latch to close to the edge of the hood line (See picture below).
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319195/pin2_zps7gh69mj9.png
We eliminated the factory hood strut and came up with our own design. The picture below shows were the factory hood strut mounts too. GM designed the same circle on the drivers side of the hood.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319194/F27101177_zpsootpg7ew.jpg
We used this location to position our hood pins to come through. This gives the illusion that the hood was design with these circles so that the pins would go through it.
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319184/051_zpshzihwwof.jpg
To accomplish this, Justin designed brackets in CAD positioning the pins to come out rough the original factory strut mounted location. (See back circle in picture below)
http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/AL7319189/009_zpsocrxzx8y.jpg
By doing it this way, the latch sit a couple of inches further back from the hood line making it more visually pleasing. The latch were also angled slightly to follow the cowl line instead of positioning them straight forward.
This is an example of the kind of attention to detail thats gone into this build!

Great idea for the aerocatch bezel. I have a set to install on my carbon hood but have hesitated because I didnt want to cut out that large of a portion of the hood structure. I may just look into bonding the nuts into the bezel since a machined bezel is not available.

Tony, in retrospect, we would have rather put the work that has gone into G5.R onto a first gen. There’s not much left that is a Gen5 other than the body. This is just one of those things were it gets away from you.

We are at the point were the project is most enjoyable. Most all fab is down and now we are just putting her together.
We received the trans back from RPM. They did their Stage 5 performance upgrade on it. We also replaced every bolt with ARP.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1280x1024q90/924/iGfAEy.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/poiGfAEyj)
We also replaced the stock slave with RAM's through out bearing.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/924/eujBbs.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/poeujBbsj)
We also decided to replace the Mantic clutch with RPS twin disc carbon clutch. We have heard nothing but great things about this clutch. More expensive but worth it in the long run.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/xCgCzp.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmxCgCzpj)
We added a little heat protection to the starter.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/6Eq948.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pm6Eq948j)
DC Powers made us this alternator to match the 8 lbs Braille battery. They made machined both end out of billet and we had them anodized gun metal gray before they put the unit together.

We used ll Much vapor canister for both the gas tank and the diff. We located on on each wheel well.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/924/sDb8WZ.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/posDb8WZj)
Becuase we relocated the gas fill to the trunk, we had to come up with a solution for the vapor line, we used this slick valve that will close if the car were to flip upside down.

Smoothed and painted the underside of the hood vent black.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/921/rCE3iC.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/plrCE3iCj)
There must be 100 hours into this hood vent! This will give you an idea what we start with. Each vent was slightly enlarged. We removed the 6 studs mounts as we are going to epoxy it onto the hood. Then it was time to smooth it. You just cant skim coat the part as the gray will show through on the to side. So had to build it with high build black primer and sand most of it off. This process was repeated four times before painting it black and cleared. The top side was given three coats of cleared followed by black candy and three more coats of clear. The end results is amazing but most wont know the amount of effort that has gone into just this one piece.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/GUC5MZ.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmGUC5MZj)
Painted the down bars black on the carbon fiber grille.

Couldn't leave the peddles unpainted.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/921/75bwGx.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pl75bwGxj)
Could get these powder coated as the rubber would melt, so we painted them to match the powder coating. We might not use them as we are making billet drop spindles and new front control arms.

This was like the fourth rending of the coil wires relocation bracket we made, LOL. Waiting on the ARP custom 12 point stainless bolts to replace those.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/921/tXsJpR.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pltXsJpRj)
We used the factory brackets for the emergency brake lines for the trans cooler lines instead.
The diff bolts were replaced with ARP studs.
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/923/0VoYoI.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pn0VoYoIj)
More ARP custom bolts. We drilled them for safety wire. Once we are done and know were not going to take anything apart again, we will wire them up.

Justin has been design a strut bar that will tie in the firewall to the strut tower. He 3-D printed them first before having them machined.
Camber plates with mount for strut bar. This was his first design rendition.

Thanks guys. I wanted to take a minute a thank Dan for the incredible job hes done updating the rendering. He added the new wheels we are looking to run. We had to replace the original GA1R because they sat too tucked in once we added the Z28 flares. So we figured we update the look with Forgeline's GE1. It gives it more of a GT3 look. He also added the aluminum sub splitter.
