View Full Version : 69 NOMARO Project

While ago I ran across a rendition that Brian Stupski from PCK did of a 69 NOVA/69 CAMARO project and thought it was pretty down right cool. I know you NOVA guys are going to think what to a NOVA but it will be OK.
My goal was to find a nice car to start with and it had to have a vinyl top and not a bucket of bolts. I located this Yellow car in Oakland Hills CA and got it home to see how this would all work out. Here is the start.
Rendition by PCK.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/image_zps52ca9f2e.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/image_zps52ca9f2e.jpg.html)
Here is the nice car we are going to start with. Yellow with black guts. 350/350 AC car. I did have to throw some wheels on it as the yellow 14" with hub caps an beauty rings did not cut it for the pictures.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/DroidPhone071_zpse1b406cb.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/DroidPhone071_zpse1b406cb.jpg.html)
Now the teardown to see if this will all work. I ordered all the AMD 69 RS Camaro parts to build this.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart013_zpsfba471c8.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart013_zpsfba471c8.jpg.html)
Now the moment of truth,, Kenny said there is no way it will bolt up!
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart018_zps82227c5b.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart018_zps82227c5b.jpg.html)
Fenders and core support all bolted right on and fitting pretty good. The grill will be the next challenge.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart017_zps9898d402.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart017_zps9898d402.jpg.html)
After 4 hours of work in the garage we have a complete RS front end on the project and the lights and everything are working and ready to drive to the Goodguys event in Pleasanton CA.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart020_zps64bc664b.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/VeloceampTonyKart020_zps64bc664b.jpg.html)
So the next step is to graft the 69 Camaro door skin to a 73 Nova Door so we do not have a wing window. We also will replace the Inner/Outer wheel house with the Camaro one and DSE Mini Tub and put the partial 69 Camaro Quarter.
This project will get an LT4 engine with FAST fuel Injection on a Carb intake so we can use the cowl air cleaner so it all looks stock. It will have updated suspension and Budnik ICE wheels. PPG is working on the paint color but it will be close to the new KIA Blue that is out right now with the White Pearl Yenko stripe with NOMARO on it.
Stay tune for more updated !!!
And Kenny it all bolted right on!!!!

A few of us saw the car at this weekend's GG in Pleasanton and rreally did not know what to think. It is definitely creating some buss on local discussions and forums so that is an interesting start :)
Promising rendering, a fastback Camaro woudl be a fun ride, but still debating, maybe a satin black paint on the rest of the body will make it easy on the eyes for those more visual like me :)
What are the plans with the rear section, taillights, etc?
Interested in seeing the next steps ;)

We will be putting Camaro tail lights in and section the bumper to tuck it into the body better. It will all be primer soon so you can see it all in yellow. We did get the aluminum front fenders but not sure if we will keep them on this.

Trey, we will use the GM LT1 manifold and run the throttle body with the four injectors. I did a 69 Camaro Z-10 a few years ago and did a LT1 manifold with direct port 8 injectors with the cowl air cleaner and liked it as it looked stock under the hood.
Thanks for checking this out..

Ed, yep, honestly alum woudl be killer, but since you will likelly be chopping them steel is much easier to work on.
I give kudos on going forward with this. I normally like doing body mods on my cars but go with more subtle stuff :)
One suggestion is to get rid of the RS\SS light covers

I really like the rendering. But when I look at the car that is all wrong color wise and the trim on the body really screws up the perspective of the what has to be done to make it look like the rendering. The yellow and black and side trim make it look way thinner then reality.
We will have to see what kind of miracles we can work to pull this task off.

Ed told me about the Nomaro on Friday, and it sounded "interesting." Then he showed up with it on Saturday. I can honestly say it looks a lot better when you see it in person....... And I know it will look even better once the car is sitting at proper ride height.
Hats off to Ed for building this. It really is pretty cool when people have the courage to build an imaginary car that someone rendered as a "what-if" concept!
I look forward to seeing this being built.

Just thinking out loud here.......
But if you are changing the entire nose, the door skins and the better part of the quarters. Then also putting Camaro taillights in to. Wouldn't it be easier to adapt the Nova roof and trunk to a Camaro?
I still like where this is going though.

.... But the front end bolted on as you see it. Tail lights are easy... and then "just" door skins. Ed's plan sounds easier.

I am digging this idea. Can't wait to see it in it's full glory. The discrepancy between the bumpers may be a little tricky as the Nova has such a large rear bumper, but I am sure the Ironworks crew will give it a little nip and tuck to balance it out.

Guys sorry it has been so long since we added anything to this post. As some of you know Ironworks is working on my 69 Camaro project right now and other customers so the NOMARO has been put into the trailer and is on hold right now until we get the Camaro out of the shop and off to paint.
We will get back on the NOMARO after that. I did get a set of 73 doors with no wing window to use for the project. The LT1 is getting rebuild right now and we will be getting the FAST injection soon to go on it so we can use the stock Camaro cowl air cleaner to look stock.
New pictures coming after the new year...
I also ended up getting the cal license plate that reads "NOMARO"

Hey guys, just an update on the NOMARO.
I took it over to the painter a few weeks ago. He is going to put the doors and rear quarters on and get it painted. I figure I can get all the suspension items ready for it and the engine and tranny so i can just pull the sub frame and put all of it together and slide it back under with all the drive train installed.
Drew Brothers Custom in Chandler AZ will be doing the Doors, Quarters and the Rear bumper along with painting it the blue you see in the rendition. I am going to put the "NOMARO" script in the Yenko stripe.
I will have Rob Drew add pictures as he move along on this.

Awesome to hear about progress. I've got two Novas and am not as big a fan of Camaros, but when I first saw this rendering I thought it was gutsy but cool. Lol, I wonder what a 4 door version would look like, I might just have to draw that myself... :lostmarbles:
You all probably know the Speed Tech Nova. I think this whole transformation can look ultra clean and cool. Speaking of suspension, what's the game plan there?

Well the start of cutting this car up and adding the Camaro doors and Quarters has started. I figured we would need to change the Outer Inner rear wheel tub as the Nova is much lower than the Camaro and the Camaro is a lot wider in the rear.
Here is the difference in the Quarter length.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside1_zps6eafa7b9.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside1_zps6eafa7b9.jpg.html)
Here is a good look at the outer wheel tub on the Nova in relation to the Camaro one.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside2_zpsa877c61c.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside2_zpsa877c61c.jpg.html)
Now the Camaro outer is installed to see how the side will look and to figure out how much needs to be cut.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside3_zpsa81d458a.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside3_zpsa81d458a.jpg.html)
As you can see the outer tub sticks out from the body but this is what we need to get the Camaro Quarter to sit right.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside4_zps0ca1aff8.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside4_zps0ca1aff8.jpg.html)
So now there is no turning back as this project is moving forward and we will keep updating and get this done soon.
Enjoy the shots.

Hey Steve, I figure I have to try something different to keep up with all the cool stuff that is out there and make mine stand out.
Here is the Door to Front Fender and how that is shaping up.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside5_zps41863184.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside5_zps41863184.jpg.html)
Now we are tryin to figure how far we want the fender to stick out as this will help with bigger tires under the car....We all want bigger tires. If we just put the outer inner fender on stock it was way out and looked like we put fender flare on the rear so we cut an inch and a half out of the tub and got the quarter skin to fit more flush and not look so flared out.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside6_zpsae77e870.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside6_zpsae77e870.jpg.html)
As far as the post on the door and quarter glass we are going to leave this in so it is not like a Camaro. I dod not want this to look like we took a Camaro and put a Nova roof on it when we are done so it will have the post and the rear of the car will be Nova. Bumper, Tail Lights and rear trunk. Just a reminder of how this is going to look.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/image_zps52ca9f2e.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/image_zps52ca9f2e.jpg.html)

Well now it is getting a little tricky getting all these panels to matchup. As you can see the Camaro quarter is a little smaller in length than the Nova so there is going to be some work on the tail end of the quarter to make this all flow nicely.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside7_zps621f43d5.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside7_zps621f43d5.jpg.html)
The door fit pretty well to the Nova door frame and looks to be maybe the simpliest part to get figured out. Here you can see the back of the Quarter and how it will need work to make things flow.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside8_zps688eb99e.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside8_zps688eb99e.jpg.html)
About ready to cut the Nova skin off and then we can weld the quarter panel into place. You can really see the flare that the Camaro quarter has over the Nova. Without a mini tub we could put a 335 tire under this.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/nomaroside9_zpsdc98f9a0.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/nomaroside9_zpsdc98f9a0.jpg.html)
As you can tell we are only working on one side so the other should be much easier once we figure it all out on this side.. I hope....
Thanks for checking it out.

Instead of trying to use the 69 Quarter why not just use the gills and recreate the body line from scratch. I think it would be much easier then trying to use an existing Camaro panel.
In reality your just trying to add a body line detail which could easily be done in steal ( not by me of course ).
edit.
It looks like your trying to go to high up on the existing Quarter Panel with the Camaro Panel

Marty, I think the way we are going about this will make it easier once we get the parts all trimmed down as there will be very little left of the Camaro quarter besides the lines and the wheel opening.
The Nova quarter has now been cut and started pulling it out to make the transition between the two so the body line goes into the Nova quarter to the tail light.

Brett and Derren, Thanks for checking it out and your comments on the build. It has a long ways to go but little by little it will get closer to what I want.
Need to work on the Door Frame to get that all lined up next as the doors have a little different ark to them.
Stay tuned as I will update as progress is made..:thankyou:

Kevin, it will be at a Pleasanton event at some point. It is in Phoenix at the painters right now. It will be a while before it is all ready from there and then I still have to do the suspension and drive train.

Just so you know 69-nova, I could not find a good Nova to do this project so I used a 72 Pontiac Ventura II since it is the same body in the areas that I needed it to be. So I did not waste a Nova, look at some of the first pictures and you can see it is a Venture from the tail section with the Pontiac between the tail lights.
I have a few Camaro's and just like how this looked when it was drawn. Now a days you have to go outside the box to do something different. This is my outside the box!
Hope you watch and see how cool it is turning out. Popular Hot Rodding already picked it up so some poeple like it or just want to see it done to draw judgement.

Ouch! ;) Am I the only one that wishes you would've hacked up a Nova rather than a Ventura? There are plenty of Novas out there to play with but the Omegas, Venturas and Apollos are getting more rare. I currently own 2 Novas and would love to have one of each of the "X-men" but the rarity of the others, especially ones that have good parts you can't buy like front clip parts, makes it tough to to find decent project cars for a working man's price.
Either way, plenty of Camaros and other "more desirable" cars have been hacked over the years in effort to create something unique and cool. Look at all the old school cars that were once nice classics that got turned into rolling custom sculptures. I say who cares what shape the donor was in, the end result, if it is anything like the rendering, will be cool enough to stand out and be something timeless. Better to start with a clean body anyway, less body work to do outside of the face lift. That's a plus and a smart choice as far as time and cost is concerned, right?

Sorry for no updates lately. With the Goodguys events in full swing and the Goodguys Texas Road tour eating up most of my time I have not been able to get things moving on this project.
Working on figuring out the Camaro quarter to the tail section as the body line is to low for the break in the tail section, may have to move the rear bumper up some to make the body line right to the top of it which would make the tail lights shorter or require the Camaro tail light to be installed.
SEMA is taking up most of my time with four cars going this year and all the figuring to get them to and from. Look for the Goodguys G/RS 69 Camaro in the Goodguys booth, The Goodguys 2014 Chevy Crew ASV (AutoCross Support Vehicle) to be in McGaughy's booth, Our Ford Focus ST Rally Car to be in the Ford Racing booth and the Goodguys 32 Tribute Sedan to be in the main haul by the Ford Booth.
Also the Goodguys AutoCross Finals Shootout is a big project that I am heading and it is taking up sometime.
Look for more updates later in November.

I'd never seen this thread before. Never even heard someone say nomaro outside of my shop.. but i'm building one.:innocent: VERY DIFFERENT one.. but a nomaro none the less. 1970 camaro rear, 69 camaro grill and valance, on to a nova. We're done with major fab work. Sorry i don't have better pictures but let me show you where we are at with our nomaro... which retains more traits of the nova and doesn't just look like a wanna be camaro (sorry, with the header panel you did it looks too much like a camaro.
Front, mostly done: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d69/lesstutrey/nomaro/1077413_661191307241942_1603659690_o.jpg (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/lesstutrey/media/nomaro/1077413_661191307241942_1603659690_o.jpg.html)
Rear.. sorta done: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d69/lesstutrey/nomaro/1147536_666516336709439_1686037303_o.jpg (http://s33.photobucket.com/user/lesstutrey/media/nomaro/1147536_666516336709439_1686037303_o.jpg.html)
And we're cutting in paint now.. major fabrication is done.. we're cutting things in so here's an idea of what color will look like:

Well a little more work on the Nomaro project this past week. The quarter is all one piece now and ready to install. We had to add to the front and back of the 69 Camaro quarter to make it fit the Nova lenght. As you can see we also had to install a Camaro inner fender as the Nova one was lower than the Camaro on the outside edge.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/Nomaroside15_zps78e12ba1.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/Nomaroside15_zps78e12ba1.jpg.html)
Here is the Quarter on the car with it lined up to the door.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/Nomaroside13_zps1a3635ca.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/Nomaroside13_zps1a3635ca.jpg.html)
You can see how we were able to leave the rear section of the Nova and make the body line work with the Camaro.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/Nomaroside11_zps2d3706a2.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/Nomaroside11_zps2d3706a2.jpg.html)
Here you can see the little piece we added to the rear window area to make it line up with the door edge as the door on the Nova is just slightly shorter. This piece added to the window area will just cover the glass by about 1/2 inch. Much less work than sectioning the door...
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/Nomaroside14_zps0e5524f3.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/Nomaroside14_zps0e5524f3.jpg.html)
Here is a look to see one side together with the front end and the door lined up. Starting to look like the car in the rendition...
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/69nomaro/Comova/Nomaroside12_zps0ab36003.jpg (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/69nomaro/media/Comova/Nomaroside12_zps0ab36003.jpg.html)
Now we can work the other side and then off to body work and paint.

Is this gonna be the new LT4?
Well the LT4 is out of a corvette and has been rebuilt. I am going to do a direct port injection on the carb type manifold and run an air valve so I can put the stock cowl type air cleaner on the car. This will give it a stock look with the valve covers off a 69 Z28 and the block painted orange. The goal is to make this car look like it came from GM back then but with modern suspension and electronics to make the drive more comfortable.
Here is the Direct Port Injection.

Trey,
If you go to www.azspeed-marine.com you can call and they do the direct port on the LT1 GM carb manifold. They use the FAST throttle body and wiring. The manifold is still offered from GM Performance Parts and they just make the fuel rails and drill the holes for the injectors.

Trey, I decided to get with FAST as to their latest and greatest injection for this motor. They have a new system that looks even more like a carb and will work for the direction that I am going. Still use the GM manifold, just not useing 8 injectors just the four that come with this kit. I will let you know how it all works.

I thought the 2.0 version was fitted wth 8 injectors?
JJ you are right there is 8 injectors in this kit. I just won't be doing them in the manifold like I did before with my Camaro. The goal is to make this look like something GM could of built back in the late 60's.
Also the metal guy is finishing the other side and then the painter has to prime block and sand and paint it before I get it back to do the Suspension, engine, tranny and interior. it will be a while before this is done.
My goal is SEMA this year, we will see...

Mike,
Marc will be driving the Goodguys 69 Camaro on the tour and I am driving the Goodguys G-10 Pickup that is on a thread build from Scotts Hotrods. The tour is filling up fast as I think everyone talked so much about the last one everyone wants to be part of these cool drives.
The Nomaro will debut at SEMA is the goal, then it will do a road tour in 2015. I have been driving the second gen and enjoying it almost every day.
Look forward to truckin across the country again with you!
I will update this build with some pictures as we get more done.

Ed,
I was going to offer the use of my shop which has built in chain hooks in the floor for pulling things down.
It looks pretty good considering it needs close to 3" of altitude adjustment. :D
I've heard a lot of negative comments about the outcome of the car as it's very hard to visualize the appeal even with renderings until you see it near completion and/or in person. It was quite the leap of faith you took and I'd have to say it's going to bury a lot of the negative comments.

Sieg, I have to agree with you, I was/am one of the negative though people, I personal don't like cross breeding. The idea sounded goofy, but now in paint, really looks nice, the craftsman ship is great.
It takes a lot of guts to take a chance like this and it paid off.

Mike and Sieg,
Glad you both like the outcome, yes it is going down about 3" to 4" to get the look I am wanting. I talked with Bret at RideTech today about the coil overs from him so I can get the stance needed along with the performance. I want to keep the look like GM would of done from the factory or as a concept car.
Motor will be painted chevy orange with aluminum valve covers and use the cowl air cleaner on the fuel injection so it looks some what factory. I am also looking at the American Racing Rally wheels in a 18" and 19" for the larger brakes but still keep the factory Rally wheel look.
Interior is going with a set of 69 Camaro deluxe bucket seats covered with the black and white houndstooth and stock SS nova door panels in black with the Camaro center console and horse shoe shifter. Gathering the rest of the parts now and will keep updating this thread.
Thanks for all the comments.

Well I got the trunk cleaned up and painted this weekend. This car was really clean to start with but this really added to the finished look.

Now it is time to work on the inside, clean and paint the floor and insulate it before carpet and seats. The floor was really clean as you can see before the paint work starts.

Also I took some 69 Camaro seats that I had and will use them on this project with the Camaro center console. Seats will get the black and white houndstooth.

It was nice that the threaded inserts in the floor for the seats worked for the two outer seat bolts. I will have to make the inner mounting for the seats as this car had a bench seat and no holes for the inner bolts. Console and seats fit just like a Camaro...

Im sorry, i love Nova's.... I love Camaro's..... But not together. The front end doesnt go with the rest. But that might be cause im too used to seeing them seperately. Or maybe its too Camaro-esque for the rest of the blend?
Anyway, Your work on the other hand, is WAY up there, attention to detail is superb.
Maybe if i look at it long enough...... Someday i'll get it!!

The execution is definitely superb which makes it nice. I think something that may help it look "more correct" to those that aren't quite seeing it, would have been to use the non RS front end. That way the round headlights are out front like you're expecting to have on a Nova. Just a thought. I like this car and can't wait to see it finished. I love that it has an LT4.

... and this reverse build idea is really a good idea. Now if you could find a donor subframe you could just powder it and install the motor and trans and make it a quick swap. However since no two of these subframes are even close to being the same that might not work.
What suspension you putting on the car ?

Looks like you really pulled it off. I was expecting to see the smaller Nova taillights to drive home the Nomaro theme. Those Ventura taillights do look a bit big, but that rear billet panel really makes it look nice. Seats look great as does the engine.
As has been said, it's pretty trippy. Crazy as it is that 3/4 view photo makes me think of a Maverick in a weird sort of way. Coolest thing about doing this helps us visualize "what if GM designed ..."
How much suspension drop will it have? I'd like to do a quick photoshop when I get a break in the next day or two, I can't wait to see it lowered a bit.
If you haven't already bought it all, while you're shopping around for suspension, give us a look... http://www.speedtechperformance.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=56/mode=cat/cat56.htm

That looks great but I think you forgot to put the Carpet in.
... and this reverse build idea is really a good idea. Now if you could find a donor subframe you could just powder it and install the motor and trans and make it a quick swap. However since no two of these subframes are even close to being the same that might not work.
What suspension you putting on the car ?
Marty & Ben,
I thought about the Sub frame swap but your right they are not all the same so that may cause a problem.
The suspension is a mix of a bunch of parts. The Speedtech upper control arms for the front with RideTech lower control arms, 2" drop spindles and RideTech coil over shocks. The rear is TCI torque Arm with a Moser 9" and RideTech Coil over shocks. I should be able to dial the ride height right where I want it with these parts.
The wheels are a 19" and 18" ralley looking copy that Alan Budnik is cutting with the correct backspacing. I have a set of disc brakes off one of my other projects that I will probably use on this.
I will be pulling the sub frame with the engine and tranny this weekend then strip the sub frame, powder coat it and do final assembly on that to get it back under the body.
Coming together. Not much time left until SEMA. The NOMARO will be in the HRIA/ARMO booth inside right by RideTech. Come check it out if you can.

The car has to go up pretty high to get it out but it is a whole lot better that doing it all from the top after it is painted. few wires and tranny lines and hoses and it comes down pretty easy.
