That is too sad, his store is an institution around here. I wondered why your Sunoco car was at the Birmingham World of Wheels.

RIP..

As someone who is fighting all kinds of things, I am here to say we are not guaranteed today, let alone tomorrow..

We forget that..

May he rest peacefully, and may his Family have the strength to carry on..

I have very sad news to report. Mark Whitlock, owner of Mark's Outdoor Sports in Vestavia Hills, lost his battle with lymphoma this afternoon. My good friend Mike Bolton, sent this short dispatch.
Mark Whitlock, owner of Mark's Outdoors in Vestavia Hills, lost his battle with lymphoma Wednesday afternoon. He passed away at his home at 4:20 p.m. family members say. Whitlock was 52.
Whitlock opened Mark's Outdoors on U.S. 31 in Vestavia Hills in 1979 and it eventually became one of the top 10 hunting and fishing retailers in the nation according to several national publications.
Visitation will be held Friday May 18, 2012 at 1 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at The Church at Brook Hills located at 3145 Brook Highland Pkwy.
Mark was a true friend. There is no way to put into words how much he helped me through the years with my work as a photographer for The Birmingham News. If I needed help, he always made time. Knowing him made me a better person. He was friendly to everyone I ever saw come in contact with. He loved his family and he loved his job and from what I could tell, he treated his employees like family. He once told me that when he was at the store, it didn't feel like he was working.
I will miss him terribly because I lost a true friend.

Thank you for the photo...For me, it puts a face to go along with his name since I never met him...And for me, it makes the loss that much more real and painful.

RIP...Seems like he was loved by many, and that is the sign of a very successful man.
