View Full Version : Weird Tuning Issue - MAF related? Coolant Sensor? Stupidity?

Hey guys,

Weird issue with my base tune on my swap car and I wanted to bounce a few things off the forum to see if I haven't thought of anything.

Here's the details...

'08 LY6 with a mild cam LS3 intake and injectors, Lingenfelter 100mm MAF.

For a while it has started right up and run, but has been real fat the whole time. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the MAF as it is a monsterous piece without a screen or much of a pipe leading up to it...just getting the swap started running.

Right now though, I am struggling to keep her running or even starting it for that matter. It blackens and wets plugs with gas. Swapped out a new set of plugs and it is doing the same thing. I had the initial flash done taking into account the MAF parameters of the Lingenfelter piece but I am concerned it is just not metering properly down low. I am also concerned that I possibly have the wrong coolant sensor in the car. As stupid as this sounds, I had an aftermarket one for FAST EZ EFI (when Iw as initially using that) and an Fbody on and I may have put the wrong on in. So that could be an issue if I guessed wrong for some reason.

I will admit I have not cracked into the PCM tune yet because I let a friend borrow my laptop with the HPTuners on it and he dropped it :faint: :faint: so I am SOL right now, but like I said I had a base flash to get her running and she did run...albeit way rich. I don't want to wash out the rings with prolonged running.

I should have my laptop back this week and can do some data logging, but I am wondering if there is anything else I am not thinking of. When I say pig rich I mean WAY rich. Plug wetting goodness. If I error the MAF by unplugging in and run in speed density should that not at least tell me if the MAF is causing problems...assuming it evens out a bit?

Any help is appreciated and please be gentle, I am a newb with the FI tuning but I am a fast learner and open to suggestions!

Thanks,
Dave

I think until you get live data you are just going to be guessing what the problem might be. If the MAF is way out, your ecm should kick out some p01xx codes and ignore the signal. Same thing with the CTS. If it is out of range the ecm should ignore the voltage and use IAT as an alternative. Hurry up and get the laptop hooked up so we can see some data.

what is the computer out of? I just ran into a deal on an LY6 that cost me days!! Mine was running lean. Can you at least plug in a cheap scanner with some live data to see what the short or long term fuel trim is?

I am going to wait until my HPTuners Pro with my LC1 wideband shows up in a couple days before I restart. I will be converting my other laptop to the tuning laptop since my buddy texted me this morning and said he can't afford to fix the laptop he "dropped"....btw "dropped" actually meant he left it unattended somewhere for a few minutes and it got stolen.

Oh well, live and learn and don't lend your stuff out unless you can really trust who has it...my problem is I trust everyone too damn much.

Back to the topic at hand, for clarification, the LY6 has been converted to non-phaser with LS2 chain and cover, Lingenfelter 58x to 24x conversion box and LS2 cam sensor. The PCM I believe is from a 1999 as the harness is from PSI Conversion in Toms River, NJ. Quality stuff but I think he just did a general flash and may have missed the mark for the injectors, etc...

I have also heard issues with the Lingenfelter MAF needing a screen or being clocked a certain way to actually read properly. I am going to plug the HPTuners in when I get it set up and just read the basics to see where I am at. I will lean on everyone else once I get the goods.

Thanks for your help and interest thus far! I am very interested in becoming proficient at tuning. I hate having to go somewhere for something without a solid knowledge of it myself.
