UPDATE - after Greg's loss of interest in the big OL Bubble top, We did some trading for this car and my 57 Chevrolet and I put a chassis under this car and have had it in storage for a couple years. Well It is now under new ownership for a 6'8" customer from Las Vegas. Alot of the same concepts will be incorparated into this project as originally planned. We are looking for a 2016 debut with this car and ton of billet parts.
We have been hinting about this project for a while, so here we go. Greg asked me if I could build him a 1962 Bel-Air Bubble top for him earlier this year. He said he would let me use the car to promote our 58-64 Impala X frame replacement frames we have been working to bring to market for quite a while. He said the car had to have laser straight paint and have a bitchin interior. But he said he hated these cars but his son loved the 62's. I just happen to have a 1962 Bubble top clone I had bought off craigslist early this year for this very reason.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Gregs%201962%20Bubble%20top/ShoppicsApril019.jpg
Well at SEMA this year my good friend and fellow car builder Neil Lea finished up a super slick 62 black bubble top with an fuel injected 409. Greg came home from SEMA and said that was one of his favorites of the entire show, I knew we were on to something when he went from hating them to actually noticing one and saying it was one of his favorites at SEMA. He may still hate them but times are changing.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Gregs%201962%20Bubble%20top/DSC02175.jpg
So on to the build. Greg said he wanted big power, not the kind of race car big power that goes down the back stretch at Spring Mountain, but the kind that will plant you back in the seat as you get on the freeway. So we looked to GM Performance parts for their LSX-376 and put the big Magnuson Super charger on top with the Wegner front drive system. I have been told 700hp is easy with this. But we want the big torque number at 2500-3000 rpm. That should be no problem. As Greg and I began talking he wanted to make the car a driver but also wanted it built with some really nice one off parts. We have gotten pretty good at this Solidworks thing and have some guys who helps make up look good ( Bob, Eric, Matt ). So it was decided that we would machine a billet grille and headlight bezels like no one has ever seen. We would do the same with the side trim and a really bitchin dash. We purchased some SL500 front seats and are working to get those mounted in the car for the features they offer and the comfort. We are working to fill this car with top of the line features that you would find in a new car and hope we can do that with the ISIS system.
A few months back I stumbled on to this Lexus that I saw at SEMA that for some reason was the initial inspiration for this build.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Gregs%201962%20Bubble%20top/HRE_open_house_1013mm_proofs_215.jpg
Well I then found these other wheels from HRE that just really got my wheels spinning about how to build a 1962 Bubble top that was really quite different. I thought these wheels would do it. We have been selling HRE wheels for a long time and know there is no better quality then their wheels. I knew that these were a must have on this project. I got to tour their facility the day before Thanksgiving this year and let me tell you the work they put into them justifies the expense when you see the vast selection of details and colors of coatings. The styles of some of the wheels have to be seen in person to really understand. Pictures on the internet do not do them justice.

Well Time for some pics. Here is shot of the Magnuson Super charger bolted to the LSX-376 with the Wegner front drive system meant for these blowers. It runs the blower belt behind the water pump and relocates the drive system forward. The valve covers are from Katech. The engine will be DBW and will incorporate our new line of wiring harness's that will come wrapped and equipped with mil-spec connectors.

The car when I bought it seemed really solid. But after I got done having the car dipped we found that the outer rocker and floors were pretty solid but that somehow the inner rockers we junk I'm not sure how that happens. So of course that takes quite a bit of work to cut out perfectly solid rockers and floors to get to the inner rockers.

http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Gregs%201962%20Bubble%20top/ShopPicsNov2011003-1.jpg
The quarters had the typical trace rust on the lower edge and the outer wheel tub was JUNK. Since we knew we wanted the car as low as possible and wanted to run a 295 rear tire. We went ahead and built some rear wheel tube to maximize the room over stock and not have to rework the stock wheel tubs because of rust and shape.
Now as you can see in this picture the peak on the replacement quarter was not the same as the doors. To some people that small thing might be addressed with Bondo, but we went ahead and cut in new metal we formed to match the doors so there are no paint shrinkage issues and its right.

Well Like I said we started with that Lexus as a direction. We really thought this car in a brown to Dark gray would be bitchin. Then Greg discussed the lava brown used on his wife's Audi R8. We had also been in disscussion with Sean Smith about doing a few sketches and working with us for some ideas on the details of the car. We started out with a really loose sketch of the side view of the car and ended up with this. We were trying some ideas on putting a recess into the side trim and some other details into the car at this point.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Gregs%201962%20Bubble%20top/sideview.jpg
We then decided we wanted to have a smooth transition in the side trim and carry the reveal a bit further forward on the side of the car. We also had the HRE 943RL wheels drawn into the rendering. I really feel this rendering helps put Greg and I on the same page with this car and starts to give the car a really different but very bad ass vibe. I'm really excited about the direction of this build.

x2 i like the way it flows with the rear pillar creating a arch...
man that brown is gonna be sick!!! what color for int then? a rich light brown like in the new jeep suv??:unibrow:
Hats off to both of you. Very classy indeed.
IMO the moldings in the hand sketch rendering are very unique and different compared to the rendering moldling that looks like a modified version of stock.
But thats my 2 cents.... and in this economy its reduced to 3/4 cent so its not worth much.
Greg... the "Weld-Air" concept looks great.

Greg, I had a 62 while I was in college. Fixed it up (paint, wheels and rebuildt283) then gave it to my younger brother as a gift when he graduated HS then watched him destoy it on a daily basis. Really liked that car. They really take on a good look with the right stance and wheels. The renderings of the car you have are a beaut. Hard to keep up w/everything you've got going, man retirements a bitch ain't it!

Cruiser style cars rule !!!
Greg,
What color interior do you plan on using? Also, are you looking for 700 hp to the wheels or crank? I just read that the nick Williams 102 mm tb really opens those blowers up to more power and cooler iat's.
I plan on following the build progress the whole way:thumbsup:

Geez -- A guy goes out to dinner and comes home to find a whole bunch o shizzazel going on 'round here!
EEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAA
Thanks to all for the kind words.... and AL -- I got a good belly laugh out of that man! Too funny!
Just for arguments ---- RODGER likes the brown on the LEXUS.... I love the LAVA GREY on my wifes R8... Per this picture. They also have a grey brown color per the post by SKIP showing on an R8.
Here's my problem.... a car has to kick you in the nuts... and really can't be what "somebody else wants". And brown just isn't a color that does it for me. I'm kind of going of the looks and feel of - to pick one car - a CLS 63 AMG - a car that just turns heads - everyone knows it's powerful - but won't "win" any contests particularly - but you know it kicks ass... and they're not "orange" or bright blue.... they're BLACK - or metallic grey -- or silver (that's out)... SO when I picture the car done -- it has to say '62 updated big baller road hog kool like a big ass Mercedes. Does that make any sense?
Here's the wifes LAVA GREY R8 -- which is a color that really makes the body lines shadow and highlight. But we're not done yet or settled on the final color for exterior or interior...

I'm thinking my initial post was misunderstood. I like both colors for the car, brown and gray. I think the brown was a more traditional color for the car when it was taking on that direction in the beginning. Now I fully agree with the Lava Gray we have discussed, it represents a more "Badass" vibe that we are looking for on this car. I think it fits the direction we now have the car going in. I posted a pic of the Lexus for the vibe it gives off and feeling Greg and I had both felt about the car in the beginning. That Brown Lexus is the baddest Lexus I have ever seen and that was the vibe I was looking for on this bubbletop. Plus that Lexus is the car that inspired me to do a high end S63 Bubbletop kinda car. I have never seen this Lava Grey in person, As far as I know Bakersfield does not even have an Audi dealership. Then when Skip posted the picture of the brown Audi R8 I was kinda confused as I did not know if that was a different color then what I had only seen on my phone up to this point.
So Game on with the Lava Gray. Now we need to find the interior colors and the black to dark gray to titanium inside trim and wheel center color.

So I have a place to put my lawnmower??? -- like Lenie!:unibrow: :D
These are pics of when I bought the car. I actually went to the dealership with my son Alex to look at the S4's with him.... and this was sitting on the floor... the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. Gwen's birthday was in a couple of weeks (the lightbulb lit up!) so I bought it for her. She was driving an '06 BMW 650i Convertible... On her birthday I took here and some friends for dinner - none of them knew what I'd done. We drove her BMW and had valet park it. When we went to retrieve "her" car - they brought this up with a big red bow on it.
Her comment was priceless -- She's busy blabbing with friends -- turns around and sees this and blurts out -- WTF IS THAT? I said - it's your new car -- and she says -- WELL... WTF IS IT? It's become a standing joke now.
Anyway -- back to the thread -- RODGER is right on about the intent of the build -- a '62 Bubble Top S63 AMG. It doesn't need a 572 twin turbo rat-a-tat-tat motor it just needs massive torque... paddle shifted 4L80E... kinda fat tires - great interior - a color combo that says inviting, classy, & badass like a high end call girl... and just enough rumble to get noticed. The doors have to shut like my S63... and it has to have a compliant but capable ride (Ironworks new chassis!). Don't look for it on the autocross... look for it on the highway and on Power Tour. :woot:
Awesome build Greg. Very classy. And it's in good hands. (understatement)
Hope you all have a great Christmas.
Greg don't change a single thing from that second rendering!!!!!:faint: :faint: :faint: :wow: :wow: :wow:

That's going to be one awesome build guys. Love the concept, dig the drive line, and really like the wheels you've picked.
Greg,
The R8 story was a good one and had me chuckling here. First time I saw one of those was a few years ago when Calgary was the kick off city for the infamous Bull Run. Four of us were headed to Montana on our Harley's for a day ride when an hour south of town we were blitzed by an R8 that went by us at warp 5. About 3 miles later he was stopped on the roadside with a Sheriff parked behind him. We laughed and rolled on as the cops were waiting for all these guys headed stateside out of Canada. About 5 minutes north of the border we were doing 80-90 and rolling in the hills when that same Audi passed us again.
This time he was at warp 7 and must of past us doing at least a buck eighty or more because we watched him disappear down the valley and over another rolling hill in a matter of seconds and that was a long ways from us. It sounded wicked when he blasted by us the second time and it was obviously WOT. Nice car for sure and I'm thinking your wife agreed. I'll bet your stock moved up on that move. I know my wife would be tickled if I bought her an R8. Gotta wait until she's done hauling the kids around before that happens though.

That is a color called TEAK BROWN -- Drove over to Audi to see it.... it looks great in this rendering - but is totally boring brown in "the flesh". BUT -- I found another color called DAKOTA GREY that is a grey brown that I sent to Rodger yesterday that is pretty close to the rendering that Sean drew up.
Those renderings...wow.

Here's a couple of iPhone pics of a color called DAKOTA GREY -- kind of interesting - and plays different tones in different lights!

Yeah -- we've flip flopped a lot! Oh wait.... you're talking about the colors! Yeah -- it was amazing to see it go from brown gold to grey brown... which is what I kinda liked about it. The other color - Lava Grey - goes from medium grey to dark grey... with a larger metallic flake. I really like both of them.
Might have to have a couple panels sprayed out and live with 'em awhile....

:woot:[/QUOTE]
Greg, I think you are spot on. I am so looking forward to this car. The details are perfect and I love the fact that the exhaust note will be subtle. I think a lot of guys that build cars similar to this ruin them by putting the big rumpty rump exhaust on them when understated power suits the build style so much better. The AMG or M5/M6 exhaust note is spot on!
I think I came a little when I saw Roger started a build thread on this!

" Raja (also spelled rajah, from Sanskrit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit_language) राज rāja- and Urdu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urdu_language): ... is an Indian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India) term for a monarch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch), or princely ruler of the Kshatriya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kshatriya) varna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varna_%28Hinduism%29)."
Good to see Wikipedia has high (or tall? ;) ) regard for the 'The Rajah'. :D
Greg, regarding the exhaust note ...I know you want to keep it low key. I like the deep, throaty sound many of the stock GM LS exhaust systems have.
A number of aftermarket systems I've heard seem to have lost that.

If it ended up sounding just like my S63 - I'd be thrilled! It "rumbles" but never intrudes into the cabin - but jump on it - it gets loud but very deep throated.
Some of these exhausts sound like meat grinders on steroids.

Maybe it got said, but if you're trying to make it like the AMG S63, why not use that engine? It would fill that engine bay perfect. But I understand you're probually just trying to show the LS bolt in of the chassis, and go with a proven platform probually huh? The 7 speed and new 5.5 bi-turbo motor in the 2011's would be wicked...

If we were building a Riddler car - that would be "the ticket" - but we're building an "every mans" car - one that can be built by anyone... that is friendly that way. LS/blower motor - simple crate stuff - A chassis from Ironworks - nothing too trick in the body - some billet stuff for "bling" and to make it a bit 'wow' - but not overdone...

No plan to wack the roof. But we might chop the windshield just a bit but not lower the overall height. I have thought about rolling the top of the windshield line forward just a bit, kinda give it the hair club for men treatment. In other words get rid of the balding man look they can tend to have.

Sounds like a smart fix for that hereditary condition that plagues all bubbleheads. ;)
In the rendering (which I know do not always convey even a close representation of the vehicle), it looked like the top has been chopped.
So I wanted to see if that was intentional or not. Thanks for clearing that up.

Well I have a different view on renderings, Greg and I discussed this a few days ago. Renderings are just a basic view the direction of the car. They are not an exact cut list on how to build a car to get this desired rendering appearance. They provide a direction and give the owner a sample of what certain things might look like. Enough to make some decisions on things they may like or not like. Renderings help customer that are struggling to visualize what a builder is suggesting or vice versa.
The thing is you could hire the best designer/artist on the planet to design up the project on paper for you and the project could end up not looking like what was drawn for a few reasons. It may not be possible, I see lots of cars that have some crazy bad ass stance and there is no way that car could ever be built let alone driven. Then sometimes what looks good on paper does not look so good in person. It really comes down to the guy doing the work, if he does not have a sense of how to make something look right or have someone to tell him what is too much or not not enough. Then it makes it tough to see the rendering through to a proper end result.
The last thing I have found is with the computer age, what some artist draws and put on paper might be 100% perfect to scale and proportion but when they scan it into the computer and then somebody resizes it to make it fit a certain picture size and then somebody uploads that pic to say photobucket and then somebody views it on their jumbo monitor and another guy views it on his flip phone's tiny screen. You really have no idea what is what. I have seen customers spend money with artists to try and get this 100% perfect proportion rendering and that is great if you want to hang on the mantle. But if all your looking for is a road map what does it matter, because your just wasting time and money. Most artists get 400-1000 bucks to do a few views, and at say 40-50 bucks an hour that is just a few hours spent on each rendering. I prefer to work with a few different artists and I pick them for ideas and their style not always for a perfect hand drawn sketch. I picked Sean Smith on this project for his ideas that push the envelope. He does not care about what is normally done. Sometimes he wants to push too far and sometimes that idea that is too far is just right when you think about it for a while.
We also hired a second artist who gave us some ideas, but I have not seen any sketches. I picked him for his restrained ideas. Both Greg and I thought it might be a good idea to have one more idea guy in the discussion. So far both guys have kicked in some great ideas. The headlights and taillights on this car will be killer due to both guys.
I find it is easier to build a crazy over the top anything goes car. One where they just throw the laundry list at it. But it is hard to maintain the original design that made a care so sought after but yet improve upon that original design but not go TOO far. There are lots of cars that I think go too far. But like the old saying goes there is a girl for every guy and a guys for every girl. And some guys like FAT CHICKS.
I did want to say publicly that Sean Smith (http://www.seansmithdesigns.com/) knocked the side view of this car out of the park and some of his ideas have been pivotal for this project. Just seeing what Greg and I had discussed in a rendering has really helped Greg and I come up with new ideas and really helped us communicate ideas and get a handle on the direction and vibe of this build.

Greg's Bubble top is progressing nicely. We have been working on some details as my guys are getting the sheetmetal together. We have set up a rough mock up of the chassis to fine tune the ride height we are looking for on this project. I have a few ideas to be able to make the car sit even lower and make the frame a bit stronger. So here is some of the basic mock up we started with. These are 19's and 20's. I'm entertaining running a 20" and 21" wheel combo so we don't have to custom make the 19" front. Plus I think we have left some of the traditional look behind with the vibe of the car and could go from 45 and 40 series tires to 35 and 30 and still not have the tires look like rubber bands.

Here is the start of the fuel tank we are building that will use the Vaporworks fuel system. We will be using the CTS-V fuel pump in the stainless tank with multiple fuel pick ups. We will be relocating the tank from underneath the car and in the way, up and into the trunk. It should be about 24 gallons if my math is correct.

The taillights are from a Lotus Elise. The headlights are made by JW speaker. They come in 5.75" and 7" diameters. They are an LED headlight that uses 2 Watts for each light when on. Ironworks will begin selling these in the next few weeks. I'm working on doing a comparison install with them in my wife's Jeep.
Here is a video from Harley Davidson that shows a closer view.

Awesome! Jw Speaker products are nice! There a local company and make some great products. I am going to be using the Harley Screaming Eagle headlights on my project and jw speaker also makes them.
Cant wait to see this thing done!

I'd love you to see it at Tracys! It's got to be there early September and should be there a month. That gives him about 3 days to work on it and the rest of the time for fishing....

No - you just have to be able to bill on an invoice topped with a rubber stamp... Negative cash flow has always been a sign of wealth... just ask the average American. If your wife has a great big Louis Vinyl (pronounced Vi Nell) purse - then you must be wealthy and therefore a professional (at something). :willy:

I agree - the other option is to look at the LED Taillights that are on Semi Trailers and then build a custom housing. The size would be very similar to what is already on the 62 and it sure would be Trend-Setting. Then you could start a new venture selling custom LED Tail-Lights for 62's.
Heck I think the Ring Brothers said it best - We make more moeny selling parts then we do building these cars.

We got the SL500 seats set up on brackets in the middle of the car. The blocks of wood are just to hold the seat up on the outside until we get the outside rails of the chassis installed. These seats have a ton of adjustment, front to back, up and down, recline, etc. I think Greg can drive this car with just a phone book now.

looks like seat needs to be forward 1.5 feet he'll never reach the pedals.
You might need to salvage a pedal assembly out of a car with the power adjustable pedals. even then it might need more travel.

Greg, it is looking good. If I can't have a ride in your mustang, maybe this.
You guys better shorten the door length. Greg will be so close to the steering wheel that the distance between his back and the rear of the door will seem like a country mile ! And dont even get me started on the distance from his back to the C pillar  Perhaps thats the design so Rodger can sit in the back seat and get chauffeured around.

Did you mistake that for an arm measurement? :D
My off-road riding buddy's is 28.5" and he was a 400 & 800 meter relay specialist on the Oregon track team in the early 80's and his dog is a Corgi.
Kidding aside getting down there and having that seat set-back and height custom tailored is a good idea.
