I've been "conversing" with The Rajha about these pics... because they're just plain weird to me.. and I'm 100% positive it's the camera angles used. So maybe he'll post up some pics and have Brycen take them so we get a normal view. :faint:

I'm not building a low rider hopper... and if I am... it stops today.

Dude.... we're going to add a panel paint job and then with the Intros it'll be perfectly suited to cruising Ark Kansazz.

That wouldn't be my opinion -- but I'm hoping it's the camera angles... I'm reserving judgement til I see it next week... but right now... I'm a bit "stressed" to say the least.

Thats one cool looking shortbed Elcamino! Is Greg getting a hot tub put in the back!

It's an extended cab to boot!

Greg,
I think it's just a combo of the low camera angle, standing close with a wide angle lens, and not having the glass in.

I think its the back glass being out , you don't realize how far back that back glass comes. I think it looks good..

Car looks nice - it appears to have a little bit of the Alloway rake.

Yes once the rear glass is in and you get a shorter guy to take a picture it will look normal and these wheels have timeless look no reason to buy some trendy wheels that will date the car in a year or two after it's finished.

I agree with everyone above Greg, The glass will make a huge difference. And like Marty said the wheels in my opinion are timeless, but you have to like it more than everyone else.:)

I think that the body line that drops to the rear is throwing off the stance too.... seems that the back needs to come up just a hair over "level rockers"?

+1 on the rear glass.

As far as wheels, I like them but if you did a mixed finish on them with some darker color in there it might make it look less 90's street rod. there is alot of cool components to that wheel and a ton of different ways you could do a two tone finish on that wheel!

I absolutely think it's too low... but that is totally adjustable -- and we are trying to see how low the Ironworks frame can go... Obviously -- Pretty low!

Rodger took the pics I've been whining about - while laying on the floor - with a FISHEYE lens... that distorts the view from being on the ground AND a fisheye stretches things in a funny way.

Trust me guys -- WE know a stance... so no need to break out the panel paint and lace yet!

Now where'd I put those hydraulic fittings.... :_paranoid

Greg,

I think the stance looks great but I think the car could be raised up an inch or so. I also think that when the front bumper is put on you would be able to tell how low it really is. I really like this build and cant wait to see it when its done!

Musclerodz
03-02-2012, 03:25 PM
its not any lower than a new corvette, just twice as long as one.

WSSix
03-02-2012, 05:45 PM
I wouldn't raise it a bit. I love how long and low it is. Yeah, I like a lot of tastefully done low riders too. In the end, its your car though. Raising it a touch won't hurt the looks either. The car is going to be awesome that much is a given.

Stop!! Stop!! You guys are killing me.  For real, I can remember it like it was yesterday. Back in the late 80's when I was in high school, guys had the triple gold wire wheels in a 13" or 14" sticking out 2"-3" past the fender. That was cool as hell back in the day, but boy was it silly. And you are right Sieg, your car had to be brown if you had triple gold wire wheels. And, Dayton's were too expensive, so everyone had either McLean's or the one's picture here with the Eagle on the centercap.

Nice progress guys.is the frame in the car ? or are you guys just playing with the ride height for the new chassis to follow suit? the way the cad drawings looked this is going to be a unibody car? or is the chassis going to bolt on? keep up the great work. ps. you might want to add more length to the pedal travel so gregs legs can reach the pedals.

The Final prototype Chassis is FINALLY under the car. That is as low as the ride height can go on our chassis.

The Car has adjustable electric Brake and Gas pedals from a modern car. That should make it more comfortable for everyone.

I am hoping this chassis looks half as nice as the one under your black Truck.

PS. I am not sure Greg could afford the three girls maybe just the painting of them. Of course that might get him in trouble also.

I don't understand you guys -

"The car looks too low".

You can tell me the car is functionally too low and will hit driveway ramps or speed bumps. But this crap about "the car looks too low" , that is not possible.

Okay the idea of a 1" rake back to front would look good though.

It's like I said to Rodger.... there's only one guys opinion that counts... and that's the guy that is paying the bill. :woot:

However... everyone needs to remember that Ironworks is also developing the chassis for these cars ('58 to '64 X frame cars) and this was/is the basis for this car being built in the first place. So if you like LOW... then this is the chassis to look for because obviously it get's 'er done!

Greg,

Really looking forward to what you and Rodger/IWK end up with since you're starting with a clean sheet of paper.

At the end of this colorful saga, I suggest a set of Intro wheels be given to the loyal, enduring thread subscriber (human or automated) that correctly guesses how many paint samples you'll end up having looked at.

Uhm, Doubt it - see Rodger borrowed them from Kenny 62 that is at his shop waiting for a Chassis to be completed. So unless Rodger coughs up the Money to pay for them, then they need to go back to Kenny.

Today was a fun day, We rented a scanner in Orange County this weekend and Bob Braga brought it up to the shop to scan many elements of the 62 Bubbletop. We are working on designing the grille, headlight bezels, gauge pod for the dash, taillight bezels and side trim. We got a lot of details hammered out and look forward to progressing on with the project.

I don't know of any shop that could justify the need for a piece of equipment like that. That romer arm with perceptron laser scanner and tripod is over $150k.
Renting the scanner and designer who can run the software is much cheaper and cost effective.

Weld...the car is amazing. Such a bummer that it's been a pain to get it done right. Sure, cars like that will have a small issue or to during shake down, but it's been a bit much. Especially for what you've paid for it. Sorry to hear it's still not 100%.

So I'll get hammered on this -- but on Monday we worked on a few details -- seat position - dash - and pedals etc - as well as the stance.

Brycen had to take the dash out of the car and cut it all apart to make the changes I asked for. Pretty amazing that he was able to do this while we worked on some other stuff! The dash is going to be moved "out" about 3 INCHES so I can reach the switches and the stereo etc. We also SUNK the gauges into the dash - and angled them... Of course these are just mock up pieces as they'll be tapered and much more detailed than these cups are.

I'm not going to make any derogatory comments about changing the dash to fit you. After all, AMG plucks homeless Germans of various heights/weights off the streets to make sure customers of all sizes fit their cars. You're proof of that.

Jeff-

You have to click on the "green thingy" that looks like "film" and then copy just the YouTube part of the address AFTER the = sign.

The problem is when you try to paste it in between the [ YOUTUBE ] [ /YOUTUBE ] it cuts the right side "[" and you have to add that back in... try it and you'll see what I mean. When you paste it cuts out this "["--------->[/YOUTUBE] so then won't work.

Sieg
03-15-2012, 05:29 PM
I click the share link below the video on youtube and copy that link

Then paste it into my post and it looks like this:

http://youtu.be/MFCNVvvmxNw

Then you need to delete everything left of and including the hash mark like this:
MFCNVvvmxNw

Then I highlight that portion and click on the green video icon in the menu and that wraps the tags around it.

Sounds good Greg. I was just telling Beth my dream list of parts for my 64 and it made me think of your car.

So while I was listing things she interupts me and says "you need a whole Impala to fix your Impala". I am now reassesing too. :_paranoid

Drove it most of the day today! I really like that little POS... wind in your hair - bugs in your teeth.. 5 speed to row.

However.... I'm not jumping on it 'til WINTER.... I want it to stay together all summer... then all hell can break loose. The exhaust needs to be completely re-done - it's cracking at every weld joint...

I think I have a buyer for the project and should know more in a few days. He is interested in the project where is it and how it is and the direction it is currently going.

We should be receiving quite a few machined parts and lots of other parts we have been waiting on here very shortly. I will continue to post. The taillights are awesome.

It would take a lot of typing to give a DETAILED reason -- but summing it up as just not feeling it -- is exactly it. As the build moved on -- I found myself asking "why am I building this" more and more.

Now that my little '32 drives great... I'm loving driving it. I'm loving driving the track car ('65 Mustang)... I haven't driven my Nomad for a year (loaned it to my sister and brother in law) and haven't missed it. I still have a '37 Ford that either needs to be "done" or I need to decide that it just needs to go away.

The '62 is like the bike -- it just felt HUGE to me -- and I like the "fit" of my cute little '32... My S63 feels the same way -- huge... but there is a REASON for it (4 buddies and golf bags). I feel more comfortable wheeling our R8 around...

There's really nothing complicated about the decision. I just wasn't falling in love with the car other than the rendering which is super kool... but super kool for someone else.

Theres a joke in there begging to get out.

Give those guys at Ironworks a real challenge. Chop, channel and section away till the car is roughly a 20% smaller scale version of itself.

Love the car Guys  , Sorry to hear you are not happy with it but as you say the only one who's opinion that matters is the owner and if its not your thing it is better to get out before it gets too deep.

Unfortunately in the time you have had with this car you have made me want to tear my car apart and start all over!! (Although I would still keep my intro's on it) Wish I had the tools, time and cash to do it but until then it will roll as is with little upgrades here and there.

I Look foreword to the completion of this project and am sure the new owner will be more than happy with it.

It's funny how people keep pinging me about "WHY" I put this project on hold... everyone is looking for some ulterior reason... you know - like Rodger is screwing me - or the work isn't what I wanted or some other BS!

I'll say this one more time -- so everyone gets it. Rodger and I talk daily - as friends FIRST and FOREMOST. The project has always been just "something to do" for me... and was never really the dream car of my lifetime. Kool? Hell yes! But these builds are time consuming - lots of decisions to make - details, details, details. So with that -- you go to bed thinking about it - the what ifs - the maybes - the color combo... all that.

Now -- I'm also working on this trailer/toter order... and traveling -- and have track car and show car dates etc.... and I just didn't want to be distracted... and have to "think" about the '62 for a couple months. That's as simple as it gets folks...

In the meantime -- a guy stops by Rodgers shop and asks about the build and may be interested in taking it over. To which I said "I'm okay with that" at the right price. If not - We'll finish the car and cruise the crap out of it etc.

So to everyone with their panties in a wad. Get over it - there's no wreck to look at... no dead bodies...

And with that -- I'm off to Monte Carlo to watch a Grand Prix. Yeah - it sucks to be me. :unibrow:

Nope ---That would be "Octopus" -- owned by Paul Allen that you're referencing. Octopus is 414' and the yacht in this picture is only around 300'. I'm using the M/V Laurel just outside this picture to judge against. The Laurel is 240' and was built up in my neck of the woods by Delta Marine.

:unibrow:Greg.

Well I'm pretty excited that this project is finally back under way. Greg Heinrich who owns the 70 Chevelle and 55 Chevy, referred us to a close friend of his that was looking to have a custom car built, but could never get anything that fit him and was comfortable to drive. Cliff is 6"8" tall and wanted a car that would fit him well unlike most everything you can purchase new. Greg told his car building buddy was also a Giant and could get that handled. The discussion was that 1962 Bubbletop is one of the few cars that has a tall roof line and looks awesome in a mostly stock form. So all we had to do was reverse everything from the Short guy who owned it before to the Super tall that owns it now.

The Plan is to have the Ironworks Impala Chassis under the car with a Twin Turbo LS engine with a paddle shifted 4L80E trans. We plan to have this car completed for early 2016. Its time to be hammer down on this project.

I knew by the look on your face after we had done all the work with the electric pedals and long travel Mercedes seats to get you to fit in the car, that when you could not reach across the open the other door, it was over. It just took you 2 weeks after that to tell me, you were done.

It is ironic that the deal breaker for you was the selling point for this guy. I just take the seats and slide them the other way and adjust the brake and gas pedal brackets the other way. And Whammo a guy bigger then me feels normal in the car.

Same thing happened to me with the 94-96 Impala SS. I love the looks of those cars. Took many years before I got the chance to drive one. When I finally got the chance, I was so let down because the car is too big. Even an 6 foot tall, I'm too narrow to fit the car correctly as a driver. I can't even put my elbows on both arm rests at the same time comfortably. I fit in an F250 Super Duty more comfortably than I do the Impala SS. I still like the looks but I'll never own one. No sense in owning something you're uncomfortable in.

94-96 Impala SS.

Gotta admit though, those were some sweet cars for that time frame. Honestly, I still want one in my collection. A buddy of mine has one that he bought brand, spankin new in 1995. He's upgraded it with an LS3 and a 6-speed automatic, big brakes, 3-piece 20" wheels and a host of other goodies. It is one bad car.

Here is a sneak peak of the Twin Turbo engine getting the basic layout for the exhaust plumbing. We are working with Kurt Urban Performance and Eric Turner for a bitchin twin throttle body water to air intercooled cross ram for the engine. The stock plastic manifold has to go.

We are starting the basic interior layout for the dash and front seats. We are going to use the Dakota Digital VHX cluster and just machine our own housing for the cluster to get the desired exterior look with their internal guts.

Im thinking the front bumper on these cars is harder to change then the front bumper on a 69 Camaro. Nothing is ever an improvement. You do realize a big fat ass car needs a big fat ass bumper.

Otherwise it will look like a girl with big butt and no boobs.

Progress on the bubble top has been good. She is pretty much in 2nd prime awaiting to address some small issues to get it ready to coat the chassis and put it back together on the chassis. We want to final block the car on the chassis where it will sit till the end of days. These cars move around alot.
We are fitting the dash to the interior and getting the seating position dialed. We have a few more parts to build under the hood to finish the intake. But we are very close.

One of my all-time favorite cars...wicked job on the fabrication as well as the entire thought process going into this build...which leads to this question, how long did it take you to plan this build out and how many revisions to that original plan if any.I'm blown away...great work!

cheers

Man this might be the deepest question I have ever had on a message board.

The car is really the same concept that is was in the beginning. The road became more defined as the journey continued on. But if you go back to the original dash concept to the big chunk of billet sitting there it is still the same concept. I think if you around the custom car world you can look at a car and tell who built it. Their style stands out as much or more then then actual car styling from the manufacturer of car originally.

These are some original sketches we did of the dash concept
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Gregs%201962%20Bubble%20top/briandash.jpg (http://s616.photobucket.com/user/ironworksspeed/media/Gregs%201962%20Bubble%20top/briandash.jpg.html)

To latest drawing of the dash to the final product.

Good ideas never go out of style but the way you pull them off will change as you learn new methods to do things. We are doing more and more in Solidworks as it allows us to think deeper and get more detail then you could afford to in making some parts by hand.

We have alot to update the world with on this 62 Bubbletop.

First off it will be unveiled in the Meguairs booth inside under the lights of of their hot rod alley booth.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Cliffs%2062%20Bubble%20top/2012meguiarslogo.jpg (http://s616.photobucket.com/user/ironworksspeed/media/Cliffs%2062%20Bubble%20top/2012meguiarslogo.jpg.html)

We settled on painting the car a Ferrari color, Grigio Scuro. Its really bitchin color that has a lot of color change flop. The intake on the car is out for red wrinkle coating now. And the car is currently at Sid Chavers for interior.

Since this one is ready for delivery to the custom and we have all the engine and tuning issued dialed. I figure I will close out this build thread. This car has to be one of the quietest custom cars I have ever ridden in. The turbos really kill any noise going down the highway. Its might even be boring. Being a big old boat it sure rides good. We might even just drive the car to the owners house instead of delivering it in the trailer. You can check our website for a ton more build pics.
