Ben, of eGarage.com (http://www.egarage.com) has teamed up with Nelson Racing Engines and the Roadster Shop to take the eGarage Camaro to the next level. The goal is to add much needed strength to the car to handle the monster 2,000 HP 572 twin turbo engine built by Tom Nelson. A custom Roadster Shop chassis was designed to add strength and rigidity to the car along with an integrated roll cage. Suspension will be our Fast Track IFS and IRS sporting Penske remote reservoir coilovers and Brembo brakes at all 4 corners. The car will be undergoing a complete mechanical transformation from the chassis to cooling system, to turbo and intercooler systems, to complete fuel system, and then some.

Build videos and interviews will be up soon on eGarage.com (http://www.egarage.com). In the mean time, check out their site for their truly unique and inspiring take on portraying collector, exotic, and custom cars; the owners, the builders, and the stories behind them.

After analyzing the car and the build, it was decided that a custom perimiter chassis would be the best approach. The decision was made to widen the platform and build a chassis that would go out to the rocker panels. This would add strength and allow the body and the roll cage to be tied directly into the chassis. In order to do this, the stock floors would have to go.

The car was braced and the stock floor was then cut out.

3M 5916 weld spark paper, it has a self adhesive backing take look here.

Also another awsome car by RS

Thanks everyone. This should be a pretty cool build and we are excited to be a part of it.

Rick, you got the 3M paper correct. It works very well on a painted car to protect it from sparks and paint damage while working on the car.

The frame rail build:

Main center rails welded up in the fixture.

Rear frame rail sections welded up then removed from the fixture so they can be ground smooth.

Body and engine mocked up on the bare frame to double check ride heights and clearances for the engine. The goal was to get the engine lower in the chassis to gain better hood clearance to the intake.

Angled side rails and a flat center crossmember will allow for a drop floor to be built so we can maintain the same headroom as if the original floors were still in place.

Yes, it is. Not sure exactly how many miles were on it. The dash and entire interior were removed before the car was shipped to us, and I never asked Tom what kind of street time the car had on it.

This is going to fun to watch. What are he plans for the turbo's and inter-cooler?
We are re-working the intercooler and radiator set up. We set the motor back slightly to allow for more room for a larger intercooler and more space around the radiator. We are going to get started on that area of the build in a few weeks. We still have a lot of figuring and decisions to make.

Thanks to everyone else. Stay tuned, a lot more to come on this one!

Roadster Shop
10-27-2011, 07:37 AM
Greg, coming from a guy who drives a 32 ford with 3 pedals, I would think you would be the last person asking about foot room! :D

The pictures skew the sizing of the actual floor. The stock 69 Camaro in our shop has 20.25" from the trans tunnel to the kick panel. This car has 19.75" measuring from the same area. It shouldn't be an issue only losing 1/2" of foot space.

GregWeld
10-27-2011, 07:49 AM
AH HA! The photo really skews the actual space... I even went back and looked twice before posting my question. But I also knew you guys wouldn't build something that was weird/wrong. Just figured others would get the same "view" I did.

And you're right about the '32 and foot room! TINY is an understatement! LOL

A buddy having a '55 Chevy built had this issue - when the shop finished the firewall and gave him the car back - there was nowhere to put your feet. He had to cut it out and start over...

See ya soon!!

It has been a while since we have updated this thread, but a lot of progress has been made on the car.

All of the floors have been completed and welded in. We also widened the rear tubs to get a little more tire under the car with out rubbing.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Ben%2069%20Camaro/Picture219484-1.jpg

Fabbed a bulkhead between the trunk and interior.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Ben%2069%20Camaro/Picture219480-1.jpg

Mounted the seats, steering, and pedals. By building the dropped center crossmember in the chassis, it allowed us to lower the floor in the car and we were able to gain almost 2" of headroom compared to a stock floor.

A lot of work has also gone into the front of the car. The work in the nose of was all about creating more room. The intercoolers, oil coolers, air box, etc... left little room for a sufficient radiator with in the stock core support. That led to overheating problems and drivability issues. The core support was re-designed and built with the radiator mounted ahead of it. This gave us room for 2 large fans on the back side with plenty of room to spare for the other components still to come.

Start of the core support sides welded together with both sides punch and flared to give it a cool look.

We knew going into it that since we had a custom wider radiator built for the car, and we moved the radiator forward to gain extra room, the stock hideaway headlights would not fit. The original headlight doors would pivot 90 degrees and sit beside the headlights when open. We re-designed the headlight door to slide behind the grille now and be operated off of actuators. (I'll get better pics of the mechanism once the header panel is removed in the next day or two.

The original headlight door is on the bottom, the new version is on the top.

DJW - We did build the core support. We needed to move the radiator ahead and wanted to use a wider radiator than any of the aftermarket units allowed for.

Doom - This car doesn't have an original style hood latch. It uses hood pin latches so they will be mounted to the sides of the core support

Nothing too exciting happening lately. Here are a few pics from back in the beginning of May. The car is completely painted and ready to assemble. We sent the motor back to NRE because Tom wanted to go through and re-seal the motor and install his new Mirror Image Turbo's. We are waiting for the motor to return before we continue with the assembly.

Prepped for painting the underside.

Don't run it in sequential mode. run it bank to bank. you won't need a cam signal only a crank signal.

Chris, we are running the Electromotive EFI on the car. This motor is set up to only use a crank sensor,no cam sensor. It is set up to batch fire instead of sequentially fire. We don't have the car running yet so I can't weigh in on the EFI system.

Time for an update on the beast!

With the all the previous work getting completed around SEMA last year, the owner began to think that the exterior needed some attention. While the exterior of the car looked as tough as a blacked out '69 can, it didn't really convey the performance capabilities lurking beneath. A plan formed for a more aggressive update on the looks- a 'wolf in wolf's clothing', as it were.

You can see from the rendering, modifications will include an aggressive hood opening, custom grille and honeycomb insert and RS headlight treatment, lower 'open' valence and front splitter, side moldings with carbon inserts and aggressive rear diffuser and air straightener. Front bumper will be neatened up and tucked while the rear will receive an aesthetic change to match the front. The rear spoiler has a touch of WRC style with the vertical air fins and will have a swept profile to flow with the body.

We started at the rear with the bumper. The factory bumper on the front (while usually ill-fitting) looks 'correct' for the front of the '69. The rear, in our opinion, always looks a little like an afterthought. We decided to make the bumper fit the natural lines of the rear tailpanel shape while sweeping up and into the body like a Mustang or the RS Challenger we did a few years back.

The tail edges of the quarters were removed to accomplish two things. First was to tip the quarter out to meet the new bumper edge. Second was to straighten the body line that follows the quarters where it meets the tailpanel.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8404/8637121711_d0a74a71f2_b.jpg

New quarter end pieces made and in place. You can see how moving the edge out helps the overall look of where it meets the bumper.

While still a subtle alteration, this mod dictates that a new bumper would need be made as we wanted the lower edge to sit lower than stock.

When reading through the start of this thread i was gonna ask a question about how the exhausts were going to pass through the frame at the rear loop in relation to the floor, as a pic later on showed the floor sitting right in the middle of where you had the holes in the frame for the exhaust.
I see you changed it though to just a recess in the bottom of the frame instead of passing through it, could you have also raised the floor a bit in the rear to still pass through the frame? or is the way you have done it still kept the exhaust pretty horizontal through that area without having to dip down around the frame.
Just asking a question without going back through the thread to find the pics, not sure if anyone else picked up the change either.

Good eye - we did change the plan for the exhaust as we were building the floor. We decided it didn't need to to encroach on the interior space any more. We changed out the rear crossmember for a different design you can see here:

Progress continues on the rear valance with fab work on the diffuser 'scoops'. With the openings created and new lower sheetmetal blended with the body we start laying out the shape and spacing of the outer wall.

Progress continues on the rear valance with fab work on the diffuser 'scoops'. With the openings created and new lower sheetmetal blended with the body we start laying out the shape and spacing of the outer wall.

You can see from this shot that the scoops are not just flat sheetmetal bent to the 2d profile. Each scoop now has a flared edge, steps, attachment bosses, and a wall thickness!

Some of the latest progress pics on this Camaro: got the doors/recess wrapped up and gapped nicely, also removed the door handle and locks.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7330/9126956769_b0fae995e6_b.jpg

Next up, the hood!
The plan here was a bold, diving recess with lower openings to allow for some much needed airflow around the monster motor and turbos.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2882/9129187492_d42c59f349_b.jpg

The plan then was to widen and fill the recesses on the upper cowl, picking up the new body lines from the hood. The design progressed a little further to merge the left and right recesses into one large one.

Time for more pics of the progress of, perhaps the most malevolent vehicle in the shop: "The Truth".

Finishing up the metalwork on the hood and windshield cowl. You can see in this pic how deep we managed to get the pockets to extend into the already packed engine bay:

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2833/9421966239_325b6c32eb_b.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5536/9421207891_6ca6a584a6_b.jpg

The lowest faces of the hood scoops will eventually be opened up and receive a machined bezel and mesh.

Attention then turns to the front splitter and lower valance opening.

With the main shape of the splitter locked in, we now begin the lower valance (or lack thereof) and the opening shape:

Fab question - Is that splitter 0.25" aluminum or thicker ?

And the rounded leading edge was that really formed solely by hand operation of the grinder/sander ? Looks pretty nice if so.

I LOVE the fab work, absolute masters at the WORK you guy's do....

BUT!! Damn i hate body kits (even if its not a kit...) i HATE aero of any kind on Camaro's. To ME it just kills the car... It looks like Darth Vader's ride.... When a car is taken to that point, i just dont understand the purpose of starting with a Camaro. Might as well start from scratch and build something thruly unique. I know you guy's at RS are apable of such a task and it would surely be kickass!!

Again, love the hand work, just not the style, and i mean it in general, not just that particular car. I'm trying to foresee this style in a few years and trying to sell that car too... Finessed lines, tucke'd bumpers, pans, small scoops/ air intake new rr spoiler style are ok in my book, but anything that protrudes the body or is a major change (like the rear extractors and such) to the original lines i have a little difficulty with... I guess its cause i see too many Honda's with wings and such on 'em and it makes me think of these... Maybe its age related? Then again, im only 40 so...

Love the wheels on the car tough!

Just to make sure we're cleanr, i didnt mean any offense or bashing, just sayin'

Thanks Josh - This one started really after we thought we had come close to being finished! After the car was shown at SEMA, with the new chassis and the other details we had added, Ben really wanted to alter the look to something other than just a black '69. Something more aggressive that gave more than a hint of the car's potential.
We bounced tons of ideas back and forward (there were 13 versions of the rear spoiler before we settled on this one, for example!) until we got a package that really gave the car it's own identity.

I love it ! It looks Awesome.

I guess its cause i see too many Honda's with wings and such on 'em and it makes me think of these... Maybe its age related? Then again, im only 40 so...

Love the wheels on the car tough!

Just to make sure we're cleanr, i didnt mean any offense or bashing, just sayin'

Lead.

No offense taken. (and thanks!)

That's the great thing about this hobby though is the mix of styles and opinions therein. For every owner that loves the stock lines of a '69 and wouldn't dream of messing with it, there are owners who see the potential for modification screaming from every line.

For this car though, it was on a different trajectory from the day a 2000hp Nelson motor was installed. The 'purpose' of starting with a '69 Camaro, plain and simply, is that is what the owner wanted. As builders, it would be a pretty dull looking shop portfolio if all the cars came in and went out looking the same. No matter what vehicle we start with, someone is going to get upset if you do anything other than a factory restoration. If the owner was worried about resale, he would have probably bought a Porsche.

As a shop, a build like this gives us a chance to stretch our design and fabrication 'legs'. The guys working on the car enjoy it because there are unknown elements that are genuinely a challenge to create, from a design standpoint it is a rewarding challenge to gather hundreds of elements and generate something the owner loves, we can be proud of as a shop and hopefully inspire others down the road. Personally, building something unique is truly more satisfying than building a clone of what everyone else finds 'suitable' or 'acceptable'.

As mentioned before, no offense taken. The owner of this car, ultimately is the one we are looking to please.

I always enjoy your builds, I love the different elements that you take from different eras as well as different vehicles and incorporate them as if the vehicle came that way. Never to "tacky" always with the right amount of "taste"! I have incorporated a few of your "ideas" in my own builds, I look forward to ALL of your builds and thank you for continued inspiration....now back to our regular scheduled AWESOME BUILD!!!!

And in the theme of today, another bump for a 'pre-sema' thread :bump:

This Camaro build we were not necessarily trying to keep quiet since most of the details had been revealed previously, but it took quite a plot twist toward the end.

The plan the whole way was to keep this car in line with his theme of every car he has being black. Given the amount of new details and unique modifications done to the car, we were concerned they would get lost if the car went black again. Either that or many would not even know the car had really been changed since the 1st time round.

Thankfully he ended up agreeing at the last hour and we did the complete 180 we were hoping for!

Chris I remember when I came to the shop at least 18 months ago and you guys were doing reassembly. It was black back then (and the Charger was top secret in metal fab).

I was shocked when I saw this car on the SEMA floor. What a transformation! You guys killed it ...

One of the machined details we added to the car, it was on the rear quarter glass as a vinyl decal on the original car, sums it up pretty nicely:

One detail we wanted to adjust was the grille opening itself. We wanted a slightly deeper, cleaner look to be incorporated with a waterjet honeycomb mesh.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7483/15819606391_548a183bd5_b.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5609/15635677279_ccce251242_b.jpg

With the addition of the twin recessed scoops on the hood, we wanted a machined bezel for each opening that picked up on the more aggressive, contemporary details we were adding on the car.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7498/15823051972_5da7ff799a_b.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7537/15819611061_4bf88f71a3_b.jpg

New honeycomb mesh we created for the large opening below the bumper. Fun fact: the lower honeycomb pattern is a slightly different (taller) shape than the vertical grille above. The lower one sits on a 45 angle and the upper is vertical. The taller pattern on the 45 then looks the same as the pattern on the vertical even though both meshes are at different angles.

That's an easy answer. As with any shop, it's all about what the customer wants and most importantly how much the customer wants and doesn't want to spend. It's no more different than one individual wanting a full-on, highly customized car with one off wheels, etc and another wanting just a simple, "as it came from the factory" restoration.

I'm not sure why you are hating on the charger for lack of details or fabrication. (I think this is your 2nd or 3rd post about it now) There is an insane amount of detail in this car that maybe you do not see. Most of it is on the subtle side to enhance the looks and lines of the original body. At least 75% of the body was completely built from scratch or drastically modified. I think the center of the roof was the only thing left untouched. The interior is 100% hand fabricated as was the engine bay, trunk, entire chassis, belly pans, etc... Every part on the car was either built from scratch or machined specifically for this build. The only store bought items on the car are the tires, brakes, and basic mechanical parts. Everything else is a 1-off piece. We will start a build thread sometime next week to show all of the design, detail, and fabrication that went into the Charger.

Wouldn't it get kind of lame if they did the same thing on every car? Seems like you're kinda hating on the Camaro. I get it if you're saying you love the work and the details, but personally like Chargers more and therefore would like to have seen them used on that build. Though I gotta tell ya, if that's it, it's not coming across that way and you're just sounding like a hater.

I was wondering what he was talking about myself. :buttkick: I just figured maybe he didn't notice the one-off wheels, custom interior, custom rear tail, etc. Don't know how he could have overlooked it, but maybe he did. I think Stevie Wonder could see the amount of work that went into the Charger. :goggles:

I have no complaints on the fabrication. While I haven't seen it in person, for what I've seen on here is top notch. Probably way better than what I could ever do. However, the end result makes it look like it's a Mopar for someone who doesn't want a Mopar. Personally, I like what you guys did to the tail lights and the hockey stripe down the side. But, since this thread is about this Camaro and you'll be starting a thread about the Charger later, I'll hold off on any further comments about the Charger in this thread. Or, we can discuss it in pm. And yes, I own a Charger, so I can see what body mods were done to it.

Pictures only tell a small part of a story. If you have not seen any RS car in person then I would reserve any and all judgement. They are one of the best shops in the industry. Also, you do not know what the owner requested RS to do, they may have wanted it to look untouched, although it is very far from it. I don't think everyone likes every little thing RS does, or any other shop for that matter, but you know what they say about opinions.

I have to disagree with you. There is no doubt that RS is one of the best shops out there. It's shops like these that are the trend setters. They're the ones that's going to get the media coverage, and it's their ideas that are going to get copied by lesser shops that will ultimately lead to the creation of parts that you, yourself will stock on your shelves for the local car guy to put on his ride. Now, if you see an idea that doesn't look right, or a concept car that looks dull, are you going to let shops like RS know what you think, or are you going to be a sheep and let them steer the industry in the wrong direction for the next 5 years until a better concept comes along? Just to remind you, your pocket book and way of life is on the line.

Personally, I think it's great that they done a Mopar, and a Charger in particular. Imo, the Mopar aftermarket has been stagnant the last decade. Parts that the Camaro and Mustang guys take for granted now, are just now trickling down to the Mopar guys. Looking at your Mopar section in your online catalog, as I'm sure you know, it's quite small compared to Ford and Chevy. While I myself and only one person, there are several thousand with Mopars that have the same opinions as I do, and the same taste in parts as I do. Since I maybe a possible future customer of yours, as a representative of the retail aftermarket industry, are you really sure you want me to withhold my judgment? Or, would you like me to come on here and say "Hey, I like the tail lights you did on the Charger. Someone should mass produce those.", or "Hey, the Camaro'ish interior in the Charger doesn't fit the Mopar lifestyle. How about coming up with something different?" so that they could work on another style that would get the Mopar guys excited, and if we're lucky, maybe get a few custom parts on the market? This is the only reason I'm speaking up, is so you guys know what I, and other Mopar people like me, are looking for and what we like. Custom B bodies don't get built everyday.

While you are free to voice your opinion, this is, of course, a public forum, firstly we dont build these cars to gain cool points from the Mopar lifestyle (whatever that is) or any particular group of people. It is not a traditional build. There are plenty of forums for those who get precious about coloring within the lines for a traditional 'resto mod'.

The customer is the one who came to us to build what he wants. Depending on the project, we have varying levels of input as to what the final product is. We choose to open these builds up on here so others can possibly benefit from seeing the 'how' or be inspired by seeing what is involved and goes into these type of builds. This isn't market research. Bottom line is the customer is the one who we are aiming to please.

Secondly, again, we welcome opinion, but lets keep this on point. This is a thread about the Camaro, yet here we are discussing your personal opinions about a completely different car. There is a time and a place...this is neither.

Around here (Lateral G) - YOU post up a build thread of YOUR stuff... IF people like it - they'll say so. If they don't, they won't post that they don't. Why? Because it's your car and you get to build it anyway you like. Lateral G is a great website because it's about showing your hopes and dreams - showing your work - and discussions about how to do "X" or where to find "X" etc.

Yep, I said that when he first asked his question about "why..." But, he still didn't get the point undoubtedly. Secondly, where there is a need and a market for companies will produce. JB400' if you're a Charger owner, you should know this already...that the Mopar market simply isn't there yet. It's just truth in the matter. Regardless of how many hundreds of thousands of owners may be out there. Moreover, do you have any idea of how much time, R&D, money and trial and era that would have into a part to just hope someone buys it or to only sell a few here and there. Lastly, maybe not you, but the Mopar guys are so uptight about keeping a car in its stock, truest form it's almost sickening to hear a bunch of grown men crying about what another man did with his own car and money. Think not? Just look at how many guys panties got in a wad when JCG put an LS motor in the Challenger.

And back to our scheduled programming....
As part of the front end refresh, we wanted to do something a little different with the windows in the sliding headlight doors. We sourced translucent smoked gray acrylic so the lights could still be seen through and machined the pieces to fit with some fresh styling.

I really enjoy this car. Its got "a lot" going on BUT its suttle and simple and requires a good look to really grasp all of it. Thats my favorite type of build.

Im realatively new here(maybe i should start an intro thread?) but i think i will just leave a short comment reguarding what has been going on in this thread.

To me, a car is nothing other then a reflection of yourself. You have yourself or a shop do what you like to it. Sure shops help with insight and what not but the end result is always the car that you want. Weather that be a sleek simple clean build to something extremely radical or something with goofy colors that maybe only a handful of people will like.

Bottom line is that if that customer gets the car of their dreams when its said and done, that is the ONLY person that has to be happy with it. The shops are just here to aid and help in ones dreams.

Carry on with the thread. I love the fact you guys show whats under it all.

And back to our scheduled programming....
As part of the front end refresh, we wanted to do something a little different with the windows in the sliding headlight doors. We sourced translucent smoked gray acrylic so the lights could still be seen through and machined the pieces to fit with some fresh styling.

Although, I love every aspect of this car from the color to the custom splitter, what very small detail I love the most is the two-toned bumper. I love how the contoured lines of both bumpers splits the black paint from the white paint. That is so cool. To me, that small detail gives the illusion that the front grill and tail are larger than they really are. When in reality, it is just the black paint extends onto the bumpers.
