This is a short story about a build not too familar in these parts. Due to some internet peer pressure, I feel somewhat obligated to post my experience - thanks Ron! It’s not a 1st gen fbody classic parked in a barn for the last 30yrs or a bone stock ChevyII with 20k on the clock driven by someone's grandma destined for magazine stardom. This is as simple as it gets.

4th gen '01 SS Camaro, 15k on the odometer, black, 6spd, t-tops, leather, etc. Bought the car in '01 with 4k on it, damn near stole it from a dealer in northern Michigan and the affair began....

Because I can't leave things alone, its first stop was Lingenfelter for a H/C set-up and 3pc Simmons wheels which kept me entertained for awhile. Drove it for a couple years until the novelty wore off. Wanting more, I tore it apart. Literally. Making room for a new bullet and cosmetic upgrades....sold everything that was bolted on. Unfortunately, life got in the way and it sat......for 5 years.

Here she is in '01...

Fast forward to fall of 2010. My lovely bride says, “So are you going to finish that thing?” “Would like to”, I say. She says, “well do it right”. And so it began……

Enter Virginia Speed. Told Shawn, “I’d like a LS2 440 that makes XXXhp with street manners. And while we’re talking, there’s this guy on LS1tech that built a RHS 460 (Steve Rupp) for his 1st gen…..what’s the damage on one of those? “ We talked for a couple weeks until we decided the prescription for this build required 460 inches with a sheet metal intake by Marcella to let those cubes breath! “Street manners, Shawn?”….”Absolutely”, he says.

5 months into the Intake build....tbody combo (measuring 120mm :omg: ) was not going to work unless this car functioned at idle and WOT.......true to build intent of "street", it wasnt going to work!

Short block complete topped off with the baddest set of LS heads in existance (thanks Cary)...FYI, Mast C5R heads (1 of 5 sets ever built), Marcella out....who or what could provide the breathing capacity to support these lungs?

Hey was just busting your balls in Rons thread, thanks for posting. I'm sending this to my buddy right now who is also knees deep in a 4th gen build.

How are you going to address cooling in this thing and how would that motor run with lesser heads and say a Fast LSXR 102 intake??

Nothin wrong with a ball busting now and then

Running these cubes with smaller heads and a Fast in my opinion doesn't make too much sense as they would both choke the potential and purpose of the larger displacement. I decided that if went this big, it would be an optimized combo top to bottom. I can't remember what Steve Rupp's Bad Penny put down, but would be a good example of the configuration you're referring to.

As far as cooling goes, Meziere pump (obviously) and BeCool radiator (polished of course ;) ). Still thinking about another fan(s)....

I think Rupp made 720 on the engine dyno. That is pretty damn good IMO.

Just mounting fans to the rad. Stock fans mount right up.

If we're only talking about power numbers, yes, generally speaking 720 is a great number for a 427 and conservative number for a 460. Combo wise if better heads and an intake made 820 then......does having a "460" become more of a conversation piece? Just sayin...:D

Performance UPDATE:
These are few and far between, but fun when they come around. Shawn may have under estimated all the air this intake is capable of in combo with those monster heads. Still working out some baseline tuning parameters so he can get a good handle on how much more cam to put into this thing. At the minute we're in the .24X/.25X - .650 range. Still on the conservative side given the cubes, so the next one has to be bigger by at least 10deg on both sides :unibrow:

Anyway, was able to bump the rpm up, threw some timing in and cleaned up the A/F a little.

Have to start somewhere, right? Next cam will be a minimum of a 10deg improvement on int and exh....lift will be north of 650. Believe he said 21 or 22deg of timing on that run. New tweaks and a full pull once dialed in should breeze by 800 with ease.

Thanks guys....duration is still relatively low for these cubes and according to Shawn sounds like a "230-ish" cam in stock cubed motor. Here's the crazy part....there may be a SLIGHT opportunity to tweak one more thing before we actually consider it finished. Not sure if its greed or making sure all the boxes are checked but we'll see what happens when I speak to a couple guys at Crane while I'm in Vegas next week. :_paranoid

This a painted effort...which looks great, but not very durable. Even with an adhesion promotor. :(

Talked to my new friends at Bilstein while at SEMA and they now have black boots and will be sending me a pair at no cost :woot:

you can buy different color universal shock boots.

I was hoping you knew some super cool solution. Based on how 'flimsy' the 'boots' are I figured no color/dye would cling for long. Unfortunately, mine don't have the studs for easy slip on/off replacement so I'm stuck w/these as I don't care for the 'accordian' style universal options.

Thanks regardless. Killer powerplant BTW!

Were you shifting at the stair steps?? Any pull I've ever done is in high gear - and the torque is a nice flat curve... What do you suppose is causing the wobbles in the line??

No shifting there....a little intake reversion (pulses) that are pretty common with ITB's. Some of it is due to the dyno header configuration. It looks worse than it really is. Things will improve once its in the car and chassis tuned...

Trick to this is keep its appearance "stock" with slight visual differences. The work here is to gain an additional 1-1/4" of height. Might need a small shim, 1/4" or so, on the K-member.

Wow, hard to believe its been a couple months since my last post here.

Progress continues...was slow during this period, but has picked up recently as I have been invited to SEMA as a display car for a local transport company. So I guess, now its pre-crunch to crunch time!

FINALLY worked out the remaining details in fasteners, fuel line/regulator plumbing, brake lines, etc.

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/lpe403/Car%20Build/augengine3.jpg

Engine to date, minus a few details...still working on A/C plumbing and radiator accessories...

Shop pics post clutch (Katech LS9X), trans (Liberty Gear Viper spec) and exhaust (Kooks True Dual) install.

Just rolled it from shop 1 to shop 2 today....a bit unplanned, but in all the recent moving around, had to haul it back to the body shop for some paint touch up's and some scratchin.

Couple post body shop updates and some finally assembly. Should be headed to the shop for initial start up, tune, a few adjustments and to make sure everything works this week. Sights still set on Vegas assuming all goes well. Didnt want to be torquing the last bolt as it goes on the trailer but will be close....:willy:

Wow....its been a little while! So what appears to be a forgotten build, I thought I'd pop in here for an update. It would appear that after a looooooong battle of set backs in validating a first of its kind combo in a 4th gen, it may have surrended. Lol, and just in time to park if for the winter!

Winter "to-do" list includes some engine bay tweaks and some interior updates (if anyone has a Recaro contact, feel free to PM me! :whistling: )

FYI....driving 460" of ITB fed cubes that makes 600+ at the tire under 7k and stops on a dime with 10cents change is A LOT OF FUN!!!

Puttin the hurt on a Mustang dyno....634/547....through a full 3" dual exhaust and 9". Like I said...lots of fun!

Nice! Finally made it to water cooler discussion!

Drove her home from the shop yesterday. Best way I can describe the feeling is "deceivingly wicked". Purrs like a kitten at 800rpm and destroys rubber at highway speeds. Its friggin crazy...
