The good news so far is -- I've titled and licensed the truck! Wow -- a BUNCH of taxes! Federal tax exceeded 24K and state sales taxes of another 20K...

Then the girl at DOL says I must have a D.O.T. number... and hands me a pamphlet. Crap! Okay -- I come home and go to the website to attempt to register on line for the number. EVERYTHING is asking me about commercial carrier stuff. I give up - - Call the Washington State Patrol... I get the nicest most helpful officer in the entire UNIVERSE!

He tells me I don't need a CDL nor do I need any DOT numbers or anything else special... AS LONG AS I'M NON-Commercial and towing a "recreational vehicle" (lucky I have living quarters) and that I should paint "PRIVATE NOT FOR HIRE" on the doors or side of the tow vehicle. He says that alone will get me a free pass. DONE.

I think what I don't like is the grill and lights in the bumper... I think if that was whited out it wouldn't look like such an add-on.

You're right Charlie... somebody might volunteer to photoshop it for me.

Sweet, I think if you were to do something to the bumper have that piece powder coated? I was a snap on dealer and the front of the truck kind of takes a beating, Maybe put clear bra on it? and a couple of the naked lady trucker mudflaps on the back, ( cowboy bling) believe me I live in wyo and see it all, congratulations on the new toy,

What do you think about some signage like: "Ass, Grass, or Gas.... Nobody rides for free"

Would that make me "commercial".... I dunno...

Yeah -- there's about 2 football fields of flat area on the nose.... The good thing is that I won't put all that much milage on it. I'm thinking if I do 20,000 a year that might be a lot. Hard to tell yet - but it's only a 2,000 mile round trip to go down and bug the hell out of Charlie....

Guess it really depends if Gwen decides she wants to go trailer truckin'.... and I'm thinking probably not much. :unibrow:

Yeah --- I sent the link to Charley and said "wouldn't MIKE love this set up!!"

Nasty trailer - but the tool list was/is certainly impressive!

I'm still waiting on all the drawings for mine -- after my trip to the dealer in Chandler and a great discussion about how to "do" mine.... Raising the floor in the living area to get the headroom down to "normal" but giving me bigger tank storage for water/grey water etc... and giving me pullouts for BBQ and Cooler... It was a great idea! So scrapped the plans we had and started over. I'm my own worst enemy!

Well.... This is by far the longest "process" I think I've ever had to go through!

That's the problem when you're trying to do "custom" I guess.

Renegade has now told me that I can't do "living quarters" stacker longer than 44' with my truck and hitch set up. And I hired Mayflower moving to come and check out my street and driveway and they're telling me a 48' is no problem. But now I'm limited once again by the weight and hitch (mini fifth wheel).

So I'm having to split my "I want" list in two parts --- what I want in the garage area and what I'd like in the living quarters. I don't want the garage area to be any smaller than what I have in my current 24' trailer.... That's locked in stone. Any smaller than what I have now would be unusable IMHO. So what get's squeezed is the living quarters. Which leaves only 20' (including the overhang bed room area). We'll make it work - it just won't be as B/A as I wanted. Smaller is actually better for me so I'm okay with that. But what a process. You don't know any of this until you say --- well I want this and this and this.... you wait a month and they say "NO". Crap -- tell me up front so I can work with something!!! Argh!

Lucky for me -- I was smart enough to plan ahead a bit when I built "the shed" 8 years ago! The big door (actually my brother in laws suggestion) is exactly the right thing to have put in!!

I need to install the CB and a couple of other things -- so since it's suppose to rain about 5" this weekend -- and it's COLD -- It's nice to bring it inside to do that kind of work!!

Actually -- people make fun of a CB.... But it's really helpful when you need some "truck" info...

I squelch it way tight so I don't hear all the BS... But if there's a wreck ahead etc -- it can be invaluable to help make a decision on exiting and or finding fuel etc.

I'm an old licensed HAM and have always had a soft spot for all things "radio".

Looking good Greg, did you ever decide on painting the grill? If not I say wait till you've got the entire package together and see how it looks.

Sometimes it's best if you have a friend, or someone you hardly know, drive and you follow down the highway. That way you can see what it looks like rollin down the road, just sayin. :unibrow:

Floorplan looks awesome Greg!

I'm sure I'm missing something, but there's no door? That's an awful drastic measure to keep Charlie out.

EDIT: I see, door under the TV. Seems like TV should be centered on the couch!
And while I'm spewing inexperienced advice, it may be nice to have el bano closer to the bedroom and/or closets.

Greg,

Very nice buddy! Question, is there a regulation that says you can not have a door from the living quarters to the hauler section? I have had this discussion before with mixed answers. I noticed yours does not. Is this for floor space use or due to regulations? Just curious!

No regulations that I've seen and I've seen plans done that way. I don't want it - it's a waste of valuable wall space. Trust me - this is not exactly flush with space.

I figure I can walk my lazy arse out one door, open the other and go in the garage...

When Charlie uses El Bano -- I don't want it anywhere near my sleeping space!

I'm changing the SOFA to a dinning table and settee... there will be no other sleepers in here except Gwen and I... and I can go lay in my bed if I want to watch TV in the evening... or sit in the settee.... I'd rather have a place I can go in and sit down and read a magazine - eat - or use my laptop WITHOUT having to set up a table - and take the table down - each time I want it. There is NO perfect solution of course - unless I had the footage to do BOTH -- WHICH originally I thought I would. It's all about trade offs. I want a big SEPARATE shower! Not a camper all in one shower/toilet area.

That is a big ass trailer. I hope you like staying in it at rest stops when on the road. Cuz your not getting that in a camp ground or a hotel parking lot. I have been there done that. Plus your stuck eating at truck friendly restaurant on the road which means the food will suck when traveling.

I like the rest stop sleeping cuz your right back on the road. But late at night it can be tough to find a spot to sleep on the park at sleep along the highway. Between rest stop sleeping and a huge fuel tank you can really put down the miles.

Do I get my man card back because of SIZE??

Rodger --

The whole reason for this trailer with LQ is to NOT have to go to hotels unless the truck is already at the track etc and I can just back a hot rod or car out and go to one... like when we're all at Thunderhill. AND the fact that I hate "on the road" food... so would be FAR HAPPIER just making my own stuff... and I have a two state (Washington and Utah) concealed carry permit (and the balls to use it) -- due to planning on "off the road" up an exit or whatever sleeping arrangements.

I usually leave Seattle at 4:30AM - and in the winter it's raining and dark and crappy so by the time I've hauled 10 or 12 hours... which puts me in a rest area etc at 5:30 or 6:30PM... That's the beauty of this thing -- I can go and stop where I feel like - without reservations.. Without having to wrestle a parking spot at a hotel and blah blah blah. I figure I'll just back her up into Charley's driveway and camp for the night.

I can actually make Thunderhill with the truck and trailer in one day - but that gets REAL OLD as I get real old.... and then what I want to be able to do is to leave there and then just fuss around going where I want to. Now with the Sun Valley place -- I might be heading there instead of Seattle... etc.

I tried and tried to make it smaller -- but the living quarters -- or the garage area just gets squeezed to where it doesn't make any sense.

Once you get used to the rig you will be able to practically whip through the drive thru.

Looks like a nice lay out.

GregWeld

I could make it 2 or 3 feet shorter if I wanted the lift gate style vs the internal lift... but I don't think the difference between 44 feet vs 47 feet would be worth the ease of use that I "THINK" will come with the internal lift.

The thought of having Charley up in the air trying to hold my car from rolling back off the tailgate just worries be a bit. I question his commitment. :D

Good question === no answer yet. I've signed all the contracts - signed the design off -- sent lots of money.....

Now we're going to go straight to the factory in Elkhart after GNRS. Then I'll decide on all the little details - interior stuff etc - and when that's done they should be able to guessitmate a completion date. I'm hoping May....

I have to tell you that ordering this thing has been 'fun' because it's exciting... but it's also been a big hassle. My problem is - I have no knowledge base to build on. Only trailers I've had were just '24 TAG type... this thing is a whole 'nother level.

I did a car swap today - using the big rig to tow the current TAG.... that big ol' truck doesn't even recognize there's a trailer back there... But it sure is fun to drive. I L O V E the huge mirrors!

I know that sounds funny -- but it's the height that makes these things so easy to drive.... you don't have to just react to traffic... you can SEE way down the road and know what's going on. And on the hiway - it's a very relaxed pace compared to the view from a car <think about Go-Karts and how they make you think you're just screaming>.

The dealer flew into South Bend.... I was able to rent a car - have lunch - drive to Elkhart - check into the hotel - and drove back to South Bend Regional Airport and then sat and waited for him to arrive.

I originally tried to fly into SB - but it was just too much effort... and took all day. Whereas flying into Chicago - I had lots of choices of carriers and times... and it was only the one non-stop flight.

Now -- today will be a hassle because it snowed all night... which could make the drive back to Chicago not nearly as much fun. We'll see. Then I might be
wishin' I'd have flown to South Bend!

First off -- this RENEGADE factory is enormous! As in OMG I had no idea!! I'm just guessing at the size of the buildings - but my best guess is 200,000 sq ft and there's two of them! You have to drive between them (car of golf cart).

So there's not going to be any particular order to the pics... But basically they build more Toterhomes and motor coaches than trailers. They have three different levels -- Renegade is the bottom - Explorer is the middle and IKON is the Caddy. My trailer is a combo of the Explorer SKIN -- with an IKON interior. They can not use the IKON skin/wall for the trailer... So I'm having them prime - sand (block) and paint the Explorer skin - and then it gets two coats of clear. Basically I'm trying to get the look of the IKON using the Explorer skin.

The amount of WIRE in one of these is mind numbing! You think our harnesses are complicated -- you have no idea!!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Trailer/file-17.jpg

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Trailer/file-19.jpg

Note how slick this siding is -- that's the IKON....

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Trailer/file-16.jpg

This is a used one they're remodeling -- it's a Renegade -- so is fairly plain jane... I'll have a LOT more Stainless steel etc on mine.
But I took this photo because it shows the triple axles -- with the commercial 22.5" tires... my axles will be on air --- and instead of drum brakes mine will be air driven disc.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Trailer/file-12.jpg

A 40' piece of the siding that will go on my unit. You can see the fiberglass print through -- thus the primer - sanding - painting.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Trailer/file-21.jpg

Another "remodel" -- brakes - bearing service and a few tweaks and re-dos.... Note how slick the paint is.... so that's what I'm doing except all white.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Trailer/file-11.jpg

The way my windows will be done - this is the IKON "frameless" version.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Trailer/file-2.jpg

This shot is for CHARLIE.....

The TV that is going in the bedroom -- which he'll never see..... :mock: :mock:

Dan -- Trailer is 13' 4" tall which IS really what makes these look big. I know guys that have 48' single tall trailers... and they just don't look like these do. These are same height as normal "dry" freight trailers... but they look large because they're built on a drop frame - making more sidewall because they're built lower UNDER the frame.

No on the earlier date! I did do a fair amount of begging.... but it's not going to happen. These guys are B U S Y! NASCAR teams have been ordering the big toters rather than the Prevost buses... and there's some super secret government trailers being built... as in like a dozen of them.

Okay - this will be hard to do.....

There are only 4 or 5 interior fabric combos to choose from -- so you're pretty limited to their fabric combos. I started with that "base" choice and worked to find floor - counter - backsplash - grout - sofa (Ultra Leather) and carpet.

So the darkest granite sample is the counter top - it's slab.... it will also be used in 4" squares in the backsplash WITH a 2" "drop"(on point) of the floor granite (the lighter brown).

The floor is on the diagonal (the lighter brown) - 12" squares -- with a drop of matte finished beige.... and in the picture you can see the grout sample.

The fabric is ONE of the fabrics that are used for throw pillows etc. and the stained Cherry is the wood - all cabinets and trim etc.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Toterhome/file-44.jpg

This is the Floor granite -- and the carpet that is barely any but goes on the floor in the slide out under the sofa -- and is also the whole bedroom.

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Toterhome/file-47.jpg

So this is the counter sample (the darker) with the floor sample - that will be on the floor (main color) and also the 2" drop on point in the backsplash,

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Toterhome/file-46.jpg

This is the floor -- the darker -- against the grout choice -- and the beige drop "in matte" to contrast with the polished floor....

The BLACK trailer is the height -- the tractor in the middle bay is my truck... the windows are at the same height - what makes my truck look smaller (other than it is) is that I don't have the height in the roof like most of the other trucks do.

Okay - this will be hard to do.....
Thee, that wasn't so tough huh? :D

Looks good. Is there a warmer grout color? Reason I ask is that light color over time will show it's age compared to a warmer color. IMO the grout color doesn't really blend with with anything other than the 4" accent tile. If there's a grout color the blends (disappears) with the main floor tile that might look and perform better over time. What color is the ultra leather?

First off -- this RENEGADE factory is enormous! As in OMG I had no idea!! I'm just guessing at the size of the buildings - but my best guess is 200,000 sq ft and there's two of them! You have to drive between them (car of golf cart).

Well.... I think I'm heart broken this morning... but stuff happens while you're having fun sometimes.

The long and short of it is I canceled the trailer order this morning after several emails and phone calls telling me that the Renegade factory has yet to schedule a build date - and that the build date IF I sign off on drawings (that I've been waiting and waiting for weeks to get) might get scheduled July 29th and I'd be 12 to 16 weeks out from there.

All of this time I was working on a delivery date of June! They haven't even slotted a build date!

I signed basic - and I mean the most very basic (as posted here earlier) weeks ago... and I requested more detailed drawings for review.... it was back then that I was told June delivery date. In the meantime I was working under the ASSumption that we were just drilling down on details such as flooring choices - fabrics - and minor details etc.

After several emails requesting more detailed drawings -- and being given many excuses as to why they aren't done (illness etc)... I'm now told that they don't have the expertise to produce the drawings and that there's no build date unless I sign off on what I have! A two year old could draw the basic shapes I have.... and I'm supposed to commit to taking a $400,000 totally custom built trailer based on this. Oh and by the way --- I'm now months out as well --- another missed summer --- because of their inabilities.

I could actually work with the basic drawings --- given a large stretch of "trust" that they build a good product and we can figure stuff out as we go.... but the move of the build date is just the last straw. That infuriates me. Mind you -- I gave the dealer a $150,000 deposit LAST JUNE.

Charley will just have to watch TV from the little 12V cigarette lighter version I'll buy at Camper World... :bang: :

Just call your buddy Mark and get this trailer. Its almost what you wanted.
Just build the front section into a living quarter. If you start now, You could have it done by June.

I've been working on this whole idea for almost 2 years now. Never thought it would be so hard to get something that should be pretty straight forward. It really isn't complicated. What complicates the entire thing is that I want really high end interior (and exterior) --- and what's out there is "race stuff".... i.e., really basic oak cabinets and vinyl flooring etc. Many of the trailer builders only build trailers -- then they sub out to someone else to build the interiors. Renegade / IKON build all in house --- exactly what I'm looking for. The problem is that they're running on such a skeleton crew that you just go for weeks and weeks waiting on answers to simple questions.... all the while pushing out the build dates. They are NOT waiting on me! I'm waiting on them!

I'm okay with just bagging the whole idea. I'm busy building a new custom home in Sun Valley -- and that's a two year process... and will be a complicated build/design.... so not having to juggle both will be fine with me for now. I've been dragging my little 24' trailer around for a long time now - and it "works".

My buddy just had a custom Featherlite done -- with room for a hot rod and a side door ramp for his Harley....

The interior in that trailer is just absolute crap. The trailer is nice - if you're in love with rivets.... But I'm not a fan. Mind you -- I'm sure they can build whatever a customer is willing to pay for - but the $77K he spent... I'd have rather tossed it in the wind.

5150 may have potential. Based on their gooseneck trailers and motorhome interiors they may be able/willing to do a custom living quarter gooseneck.

http://www.5150racetrailers.com/

Another option would be the custom coach builder in my neighborhood, Marathon. I've seen big tag trailers at their site and their interior work is pretty good. Possibly sub the interior out to them?

Yeah, sub it out to one of the luxo moto coach builders! Newell, Tiffin, Marathon, Gulf Stream (yes that one), etc. It'll make for a better trailer, and a better conversation piece!

Edit: lemme add Newmar, Powerhouse to that list

I think there's just something wrong with me..... Here's how I shop....

I tell someone up front --- If I tell you that you have "good, better, and best" I'm going to ask you what you have better than that.

Then once we're working on an order... or a contract... and you tell me you need 25K (for instance) up front... I'll tell you I'll give you 50K up front. Just so you know I'm a for real buyer.

I'm very easy to please - as long as you understand that all I'm asking for is the very best you have - and to please bring me ideas... I love it when someone says -- "hey! You know what would really be kool!".... Or says... well this is the way we normally do something - but if you want my opinion I'd do it "X" way because it only costs "X" more but it's a way better way to do it.

Apparently I just don't communicate very well.:getout:

I WILL get something -- even if it's a temporary diversion. And I agree --- I don't know what I have to do to just buy something. This same factory was working on a 22' IKON toterhome -- and stacker gooseneck for me -- we're talking $750,000 rig -- the very top of the line Freightliner Cascadia tractor with the 600 hp Cummins.... It took them MONTHS -- and then after everything is agreed on - money sent etc -- they came back and said "we can't build it because it's too heavy on the front axle".... I'm like REALLY? Do you people not have a friggin' clue what you're doing? The fix was to go with a larger 28' motor coach -- and TAG trailer --- which I had specifically told them earlier I did NOT want.... and that I was trying to keep the overall length within state limits! <75'>

That is such a bummer... sorry Greggers.

Ya know Jody -- Seriously -- I am a dream customer. SAR - which should stand for Stupid Ass Retards - worked the entire build of the '32 with funds UP FRONT without once ever having to ask me for a reload. Who does that? Me... because I understood that it was "tough" out there and I figured I'm going to have to pay for the stupid little car no matter what - so big deal if I'm 30 days ahead of the game. Big whoop.

Brizio has been working now for several months - billing against the funds I wired him this summer.... and he's nowhere close to being out of money. The entire build was discussed - motor - tranny - color - interior - stance - looks - everything UP FRONT.... They're not waiting on me for a single thing. They know exactly what I want - they have funds to buy all the parts - body - frame - motor - everything.... way before they need it. How easy is that? I trust them. I know what I want - I communicate it - and let them rock and roll.

I don't ask for a discount for cash - I don't ask them for interest on my money - I only ask that they hurry up because I'm like a little kid waiting for Christmas morning.

This is why I say "it must just be me". SAR screwed the pooch.... cost them the next build.... the trailer guys (Renegade) have now blown through TWO builds and got neither of them. Little wonder business is tough! It's hard enough when you do everything right - let alone when you're stupid enough to blow through the easy customers! UGH!

To me it's much easier (and more successful) to keep your customers happy and get the rewards of that relationship, plus the additional business they bring because they're happy and spread the word, than to not take care of your customers and constantly battle to replace the ones you lose so you stay in business. As hard as it can be to develop a good customer it baffles me that so many companies just don't seem to care about keeping them.

I've been buying cars from one dealer here in Seattle since 1976.... I'm on #9 now... It's really not hard to keep customers. Treat them with respect... do what you say you're going to do... be honest when things aren't going as they should.

When I was the factory Rep for Brown Jordan... I treated every customer as if we were partners. The better they did - the better I'd do. After all... I was a commissioned rep... so I got a percentage of everything. I could write one order and feed them full of crap - and make nothing from then on... Or I could help grow their business - which would in turn - grow mine.

Not really rocket science.

That's where the vast majority of salespeople fail and mostly out of fear.

In reality that's their opportunity to stand above the heard and earn future business via honesty, trust and respect. But NOooooo it can't be that easy. :D

When I was there a few weeks ago - it didn't appear that there was an imminent danger of them closing - but I can tell you that there's far more capacity in the plant than is currently being utilized...and they're running on
the bare minimum of employees.

I actually have no problem with the quality or the giant leap of faith they're asking me to make with just signing off on the plans as is... my problem comes from THEM dragging their heels - not answering simple questions in a timely manor... and then making me sit on my ass waiting for them because they can't get their act together. I just can not - will not - reward someone with my business even if I'm the one that suffers for it.

The fact that they're not clever enough to have slotted me a build date - and didn't tell me that minor little fact... while I was waiting weeks for replies... is what killed it for me.

I dug out the paperwork... I signed a build quote and build plan on DECEMBER 18th!

I was under the impression (given the June delivery date) that we were just working on the very final details.

I'm also having a hard time understanding the lack of knowledge/info etc coming from the dealer. As much as I like him... I expect far more interaction etc. To just lay back and let this all play out -- not pushing the factory -- and or having info and not passing it on to me... that's another nail (actually a clasp with a lock on it!) in the coffin.

I think it's a division of SARS and they are out to get you. :catfight:

Greg, I wish you were having better luck with your projects...Unfortunately I know all too well what your dealing with....This last year was a landmark year for myself, as I went "All In" on a new and expanded buisness and I swear everyone I dealt with from electricians, security people, phone people and all these so called experts not ONE of these people could just give me a bid and time frame with-out trying to alter the way I wanted it done....So now a year later we are almost done with stuff that could have been done 6 month's ago if I wasnt having to do it all myself ( and my son )...The only plus to any of it is we are now experts at wiring 3 phase power, tile installation ,security and camera systems,internet-ethernet systems controls and wiring, sheetrock and texture and whole bunch of other stuff I would have been happy to pay for If I had a comfort zone with any of them.. As for the trailer issue I think one of the things your dealing with( I know you'll get this, as I read your posts in the investment section) is the fact that A ton of our buisness's in the U.S.A that have actually been able to make it through this economic collapse are so busy playing catch-up that they cant even focus on current, in the same fashion as they used to be..The bad thing is now they risk bad press before they have time to rebuild..I believe any company that didnt watch the economy with a magnifying glass and lay-off accordingly ,thinking they could ride it out and then had to lay off big groups to stay afloat is what is killing on-time action now..Just my opinion but I believe it to be .I started a new shop that should have cost half a million and the only reason it didnt was I havnt written my self a ck for all that I did !!! Greg , I know we hav'nt met yet and I have very good reason for that,I believe I have built one of the nicest street rod/race car shops in the northwest and I did'nt want you (the ideal customer $) to see it until it was done !! You could however come down anytime for lunch take some pics and let me know what you think..I have roughly 15000 sq ft and we are about to be something in the NW.....again sorry for all the bad issues you have had to deal with when all you really wanted to do was spend money , and stimulate the economy...Trav ...........................

That suprises me about Renegade, I help a friend with a drag car and the guys who have big rigs seem to prefer them. Have you looked at Vintage race trailers? They have a really nice setup that they use to haul their Top Dragster with, never been in the living quarters though. Not sure if the build them to the plushness that you would prefer, but you might give them try. Good luck.

Yeah -- I'm not sure if it's Renegade -- or the dealer (I'd like to think it's NOT the dealer) but someone just can't get their act together. Everything seems to bottleneck with a guy at the plant named Harley. EVERYTHING goes thru him -- he writes nothing down.... he's on the road half the time... and you just wait weeks for answers. Either way -- I'm done trying to get them to build something for me even though they build a nice product.

Not that it makes a difference one way or the other -- but this is a $400K trailer.... you'd think they'd want the business and would be all over getting 'er done. Maybe business is just way better than I think it is and they've got customers beating down their doors.

WOW! That is a big order, I would think they would be jumping all over that without even thinking about it. It seems like everything else these days, people complain about the economy but when you throw money at them to do a job, they just sit there and look at you with a dumb look on their face:headscratch:

To me it's much easier (and more successful) to keep your customers happy and get the rewards of that relationship, plus the additional business they bring because they're happy and spread the word, than to not take care of your customers and constantly battle to replace the ones you lose so you stay in business. As hard as it can be to develop a good customer it baffles me that so many companies just don't seem to care about keeping them.

This is why we treat our customers like family, they fly into town and hang out at the shop for hours and play with the dogs ask how the kids are doing and have lunch with the guys. I dont want clients that dont love what we do I want clients that live what we do and want to be apart of it. Its simple do what they ask and dont waste their money and they will be happy.

Thanks Chris! I'm waiting (again) to hear from the dealer.... and I also have a call into the Sport Truck USA guys in Chandler where I bought the Freightliner... they are dealers for Renegade and said they have some ideas for me. We'll see.

Did you sell your setup??

04-09-2013, 08:05 AM

:bang: :

Greg, buy the trailer you want size wise empty and drop it off I will have everything built in a very timely manner for you. I have done several things like this for clients and have some great guys we work with to do these things. We might be able to save half your summer if you can find something quick. We completely gutting a 22' toter and rebuilt everything in a month. I also helped with the Jesse Rooke trailer that was at bike week several times and that thing was a party machine.

My buddy and I were out for the GoodGuys show last month, it was either raining or hailing or freezing. We decided to get out and shop-hop to kill time and stopped in over at the Fesler camp.
We're just a couple average Joes off the street, gonna poke around and see what we could see. We were greeted at the door and asked if we wanted a tour right off the bat. Chris was out so his son took over tour duty. We were shown their projects, asked about our projects, told what they could help us with and even offered some free swag. Very down-to-earth bunch of folks.
It is as the man says, they love what they do and it shows. His son and his crew really seem to get it's always about the customer.

I'd respond to all the posts -- but just got home and need to just sit without using the thought process for a bit... maybe tomorrow...

I did "scale it" at Jubitz truck stop this morning.... 48,020 POUNDS.... that explains why it drives just a "bit" differently than my old pick up and 24' TAG trailer. Ya think?!?!

GregWeld
04-28-2013, 07:06 PM
Okay -- back to being a post whore...

This little trailer adventure started out with my canceling the 48' living quarters two car stacker.... and in doing so - talking to the Sport Truck RV dealer where I bought the truck. He mentioned he might have something that would "work" for me.... so I told him I was going to Cool April Nights in Redding, California... and that I'd roll on down to Phoenix afterwards to take a look at what he had.

Thinking that I might have a "deal" I could work with -- I told Rudy to bring the title to his trailer to Redding --- and that he could have my 24' Motortrack -- which is nice trailer - but used trailers aren't worth much -- and I'd rather he just swap trailers with me - and I'll make the dealer take his in on "trade". It wasn't worth towing anywhere --- let alone a trade. Seriously.

So we had a great show and cruise in Redding and Sunday AM I load up the '32 in my "new" trailer... Rudy heads home with his new trailer. I phone ahead and make a reservation at a hotel in Palm Springs... non-refundable BTW. 35 miles west of Palm Springs -- a lady is beside me waving frantically and honking her horn. Obviously something was wrong. I check the mirrors but it's sunset and I can't see much... until I hit the binders to slow down and pull over to the breakdown lane! SMOKE --- and lots of it!! OH CRAP.... I'm going to finally be rid of the '32!! By burning it up on the I-10.... but that's a different thread....

So a quick assessment of the situation -- I have a burned up wheel bearing!!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Toterhome/file-54.jpg (http://s919.photobucket.com/user/gregweld/media/Toterhome/file-54.jpg.html)

Standing alongside the freeway -- I notice I'm right next to a WalMart. PERFECT! It's late Sunday night ---- I'm 35 miles from my non-refundable hotel --- I'm dragging this beat up POS to WalMart -- unhooking it - and going on to my room! I'll get it sorted out on Monday! DONE.

Monday AM early I run back to where I left the trailer.... and as it turns out there's a trailer repair joint directly across the I-10 from where I am! Better lucky than smart. I run over to borrow some tools --- they never ask my name -- no deposit -- just good old fashioned guy to guy trust! An hour and a half later I have to wheel and hub off -- so I can balance the trailer on the three remaining tires and drag it to the super close repair shop. But --- always a big butt --- the bearing blow out had ruined the threads on the axle.... Not that I care.... cause I tell the RV repair guy "today is your lucky day! That trailer right there is YOURS! FREE! But I'm not repairing it - you are...AND --- I'm going to leave it here locked up for 2 or 3 days if that's okay. DONE. I unhook and go on to Phoenix.... a couple days later I go back and fetch the '32 -- and leave the title for the POS. Life is okay sometimes....

So Here's some pics.... slept the first night in a truck parking lot next to the trailer dealer -- got up O dark thirty and headed to Bakertucky!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad33/gregweld/Toterhome/file-80.jpg (http://s919.photobucket.com/user/gregweld/media/Toterhome/file-80.jpg.html)

The problem with the drive from Phoenix to Btucky! Only have an FM radio!! No satellite! OMG long drive across the desert! So Rodger hooks me up with his stereo shop -- while they do better radio and speakers --- they allow me to use the shop tools to do a quick CB install.... Sweet! We're cooking now!

Yeah -- the bearing must have gone a couple 5 miles or more -- it had REALLY chewed up everything! The castle nut was partly rounded off which really made it hard to get off -- and the lock washer "thingy" was mangled which made things even more difficult with no tools to work with. I ended up shopping at WalMart for a screw driver etc....

I think poor Rudy's trailer lived at the beach for awhile... it was pretty rotted out.

Dang dude! Sorry I missed ya! I bought a Snap-On 30 gallon parts washer from a buddy in Portland and had to wait for him to come to Jubitz so we could load it in the trailer. So didn't leave Portland until about noonish. It was a busy day in Ptown --- 'cause I also needed to swap out all the stuff I left in my old trailer! Met up with MikeP at Redding... tricked him into going to look at a "the ultimate PT Mustang" <I was sure he would pound my face once he walked all around in the heat to see it>.... For you No. Cal dudes -- Cool April Nights is a "must do" show! 1852 registered cars... and an amazing cruise with so many people watching! Holy cow... never thought that many people could come stand on the sidewalks to watch cars drive by.

Truck is easy to operate.... IF... you use your head. This is about the tortoise and the hare... the cars whiz by.. you just plug along... sometimes I'd see the same cars pass me 3 and 4 times in a day. Crazy.

Had to call Rodger to ask about the jake brake... mine seemed "lazy" and mostly useless... today I figured out that if you slipped the tranny in "L" then the jake kicks on... Why they'd set it up this way I have no clue - but now that I've found it... it works great.

The living quarters has 4 corner auto leveling -- pretty slick! Push a button and these legs drop down = and the whole truck starts doing a bit of a dance as they level up... Sweet!

Me and the big rigs... I hate fueling... truck stops are filthy nasty places.... I just fuel and go!

Thanks for dinner last week. Good times. Glad Rudy the stereo guy got you hooked up. Good guy there. The jake is your friend but works best at higher rpms. Now you need some straight pipes like me.

Was good to see you and Shannon and Frank! Good times indeed!

Rudy (not my brother in law - but the stereo shop owner) was the best! Super nice guy!

The truck makes a little noise with the new and improved jake -- but not like it should! I want hot rod jake sounds.... like the big truckers! It isn't going to happen with the regen exhaust stuff you must use... but I can dream!

That's a Jake!

Mine reminds me of that commercial where the neighbor has the electric car...

I was going to let that it slide. What an amazing piece of "work". The funny thing was my dad and I walked down about 3 rows looking for it. If Greg says it is worth looking at it must be cool. My fault I fell for it.

All I have to say is paybacks buddy.

I'm working on ordering a new trailer. This time around I'm going to finally actually order a trailer that will make use of my F-350 Dually.

I'd really like to get this RIGHT - the first time... so I'm looking for your help on pluses and minuses -- things you'd never do - and things you wish (unlimited check book items) that you had.

Trailer is ATC 40' - with 14' living qtrs... triple axles (spread axles) - all black - .050 rivetless skin... gooseneck.

I'm looking for ANY ideas - brakes - landing gear dos and don't - interior ideas - bigger liv qtrs - smaller? Built ins?
if you hate having a bigger trailer because it became a PITA - or do you wish you'd have gone a bit bigger?

Totally open discussion.

Well, after almost two and a half years, and 100 pages, Mr. Weld is rollin.:cheering:

Heep -- It's really more like FIVE YEARS.... I just wasn't vocal about it!

I really struggled with this whole process... because it's a large commitment of energy to do this stuff! If you get it and don't like it -- you're kind of stuck. They have zero resale value. I learned something from boating... the guys with 30's and 45's were out every weekend... once the guy stepped up and bought a 65' the boat never left the dock. I was worried that might be the same situation with these things. However... now that I have it -- I like it!

Not to dig up an "old" thread, AND change the subject, but here is a picture Luara took of our boys guarding your car at Redding, gun and all.
