Make sure to get that car on the lift and nut and bolt everything. Don't need Gwen staring at you thinking "Why oh why did I let this idiot talk me into driving this POS car"

New oil (Redline 40wt Racing) and filter --- ran the rack @ .018 hot lash -- new front rotors and pads -- bled all old fluid and filled with Wilwood racing fluid... inspected anything and everything I could lay a hand on. Two new sets of tires mounted and ready to go.
If she crashes it - she will be disinvited from all further events.

She had a great time at Bondurant.... and will make some track events with me . If the didn't think she would - I'd have gone with a smaller toter and probably a little more utilitarian....
She's going to drive the Mustang (with instructor) at Thunderhill this month... and I'll just hope that Charley doesn't run her off. Or run off with her.
I sold the idea that this would be similar to our boat... go anywhere - any time - hassle free (ha!) way to mess about the country. We'll just use various "dates" of events (shows or track days) to go somewhere... then mess around going to and from.
If she doesn't like it.... My friends will!
Just out of curiosity, what was she driving at Bondurant? I mean I really want to see her like this stuff but if she wasn't driving the Mustang.........just sayin', might want to find her something a little easier to drive. You dont want to be picking up pieces of your transmission off of the Thunderhill tarmak.

She was in the SS Camaros with the 6 speed.
I have her scheduled with an instructor ride-along for both days - yellow group - at TH.
The car will be way more than she can get into... but I want her to experience it anyway.
If she can't handle it -- I'll let her ride in something far tamer - like Todd's at Buttomwillow. :unibrow:

I just have to find some hot rod flames for the front of the tractor that I like... and maybe I'll do them and maybe not. Have to see it done graphically FIRST... I must be from Missouri.
.
If you are gonna go with the classy blue... I would have to stay away from the hot rod flames... just to "typical"
I would say go with OD green...white stars on the doors, radioactive symbols all over it, big letters saying protective gear must be worn within 75 feet... and never worry about getting pulled over.... thats just me
back to the blue.... leave it clean and classy... except the back door.. where it says "uncle greg's midget unicorn petting zoo" or would the "pc" version be "pigmy unicorn"

Some quick math ---- if I spend 30 days per year for the next 10 years in this thing -- I can do that at the bargain basement rate of $2200 per night.... NOT including fuel - maintenance - insurance - etc.
For that kind of $ it should come with hooker service....

The "you're" is a general "you" not a YOU.... as in "anyone" that's going to go this route.
Let's just acknowledge that owning something like this - if you're not a professional race team - is just ridiculous. There's no rational way to justify ownership.

Well... remember.... just because you can doesn't mean you should.
This is a big undertaking... not financially (for me), but in terms of use. I have a large driveway and parking area for it... so I don't have to store it somewhere else. But this thing is a class 8 truck - and at 75' it's longer than your average truck... so that means you're not filing it at the local Chevron... and there's roads you can't drive on - and bridges you can't go under... and on and on. What I'm hoping for is that it's not so much hassle that it isn't worth the effort.
I have a large bucket list of shows I'd like to go to... and places I'd like to see... and with both Gwen and I retired now... I'd like to just take off and go to them. I want to sleep in my own bed - and eat my own cooking etc. I'm just hoping the learning curve isn't too steep!
I just hope Charley gets the driveway widened out before September... but I guess I can stop out on the road and pick up his '66... and a Busch car... so when he flies into Bakertucky for Buttonwillow, he'll have something to drive.

STARTING WITH YOUR ROAD!!! lol
i know when we were racing Hard and had the 50' trailer with 3 cars and the lift gate, and lounge and and, it was alot of work once you arrived at tne track. lol wait till you have to wash it the first time.
super handy to have EVERYTHING in it's place, it doesn't come out of the trailer so you now need 2 of everything, but i bet once you hit the roaad and get comfortable you will be gone fo rmonths. flying the wife in.

Well -- You've been in my "shed" -- I've got a few spare tools.... and the stuff that's already in my current trailer will transfer over. I had one of the big cabinets in the stacker converted to tool box drawers and one has a 4hp compressor... then there's two more on the other side... so it should have plenty of storage.
Since I'm not a "race team" -- if there's an issue with a car that isn't just a simple hose clamp type fix -- it'll just be loaded up and fixed when I'm at home. This is all just for fun so I'm not busting my arse over a hot car trying to get through the next 10 laps.
It's funny - originally I was just going to do a 14' living quarters in a 44' gooseneck trailer - and everyone told me what a big hassle that was going to be - and that my dually wasn't really big enough and blah blah blah...

The other day we're in the car and her ex CEO calls -- starts asking her what RSU's to give a VP and signing bonus etc.... Mind you - we sold this biz over a year ago - and she retired December of 2011.... This is a 1 Billion dollar company in sales... and he's still asking her what to do! We're friends so it doesn't matter... but when she hung up -- first thing she said was -- "thank gawd I don't have to do that stuff anymore!"
Amen!
She'll never go back to work anywhere -- except Boards of companies or something along those lines and then ONLY for fun... and if it isn't something she thinks would be fun -- it ain't happenin'!

Absolutely...but I've already been through a few rodeo's with builds that are closely related to this PT stuff, i.e. vehicles built that required with low-volume custom components.
I also will wait for certain key items to come on the market. I don't like having just one choice whenever possible. And they're about ready.
What I like is seeing guys working hard to to keep improving their cars, and really pushing the envelope.

Just step back from the 80's. Either put flames or don't. No Ghost flames.
If anything just do more stainless on the truck.

I already proposed that question.... since I just asked for the color change and they're built in Indiana -- I figure I'll hear back tomorrow or the next day. I also asked about whether or not they're capable of doing the ghost flames and coming up with a design etc.
If you look at the IKON/Renegade website - and specifically the IKON versions (which is what mine is) they have some pretty "fancy" paint jobs.... but those are smaller areas... so a HUGE surface done in Metallic might be all mottled... I don't know.
Some things are better left up to the little woman!
I like the stealth/sinister factor of the Lava Grey. It could be real good and Gwen can get in a few "I told you so's" when everyone is handing out compliments. Win-Win

Just step back from the 80's. Either put flames or don't. No Ghost flames.
If anything just do more stainless on the truck.
I'm just trying to break up the HUGE solid color and trying to come up with SOMETHING that doesn't say MOTORHOME OLD FOLKS PAINT JOB...
Actually --- it has a huge chrome grill -- and big headlights - and chrome bumper -- and SS all the way down the side of the toter and stacker... so maybe that's enough! And all the window are black...
Thanks for the input guys -- really! I'm struggling with this part of it.

Just put as much stainless and chrome as possible. If it needs more later just a vinyl decal. But with the proper stainless trim it will look very classy and modern.

Here's a video I came across just now looking for paint ideas....This shows the floor I ordered and the way the shower is done... and the TV over the cab etc.
I did do the Hydronic in floor heat system... the difference is ours will be a Freightliner Cascadia truck - 600 hp Cummins - Allison automatic transmission... and only 24' of living quarters but will have the dual rear axles..
And this shows the paint job WE DO NOT WANT.....
I'm in agreement with Rodger -- just the Lava Grey and forget it....
gn2d153xOME
FWIW - Marathon Coach is in my backyard and I don't recall seeing any issues with their metalic jobs. Didn't scrutinize them too close, but never noticed any pooling etc.
Maybe break it up with a commercial theme which my draw less scrutinixing attention to the rig.

I thought you were all done after picking the options.
Now you need to figure out how to paint it? What a bitch!!
I like the ghost flame idea but with a vehicle that big you cant do the whole thing in flames so doing the cab only isn't a bad idea. Trying to tie another scheme into that is a tough one though.
I would probably run the ghost flames up front along with the triple color scheme on the truck they showed in the video. I liked the front of that truck.

Having an awning match your car will be awesome until you decide to sell the car for something else that is NOT yellow. Just get everything Lava Gray Colored. the awning companies have a really nice dark gray.
Just make the hauler look timeless. No Gimmicks, No Crap that looks dated in 10 years. Kind of like blue jeans and a T-shirt or a tuxedo. They never go out of style.

Big difference -- one rig was used -- one rig is custom ordered.
I've asked the factory to do a rendering - with and without ghost flames - in the lava grey color... 'cause it's going to be lava grey - that part is "done". Now the choice is going "classy" with a grey awning -- or having some "fun" with the light yellow version.

I'd definitely break up the color scheme with some contrast on the awning. To me, that's like a black car that's murdered out. I like the contrast of a red awning. Plus, it would match your matchbox toy, the 32.

Bob --- My thoughts on that wiener holder EXACTLY.... It's just "wrong".
Jerry --- Nice rig! Yes - similar.... That rig has an "assembled" awning which covers more area... Where the Girard awnings are pushbutton and out they go. I'm hoping they're adequate. I don't really care if the car sits in the sun a bit. As long as Gwen and Charley are happy... and they (the awnings) block the sun from fading out the TV.:D
I did eliminate the A/C and heat in the stacker.... which also meant I could kill the 12kw generator. I hope that wasn't a mistake. I just didn't see myself hanging around inside the trailer... and it can be plugged into the toter for power so I can run fans etc.

My wonderful wife just had to trip to Northern California and back -- where every 5 miles I brought up "what we'd be doing if we were in the toter!"..... as in - "if we were in the toter we could pull over right here and have lunch" - or "if we were in the toter I could pull in here and use MY OWN BATHROOM".... it got to be a joke after 1000 miles...
When we left Thunderhill we took the scenic route out of Williams... on Hwy 20 over to 101 then south to St Helena (Napa valley)..... on the way home we back tracked -- and noticed a big sign -- "NO TRUCKS OVER 65 FEET".... DANG NAB IT! I love back roads and hate the interstate drone.... so was really bummed to see that sign!
Once on the road I found out why --- narrow and super twisty.... fantastic driving, but not in the toter!

I found out they offer EIGHT THOUSAND OPTIONS when ordering a big truck! My order for the truck only - was 14 pages worth of "stuff". A lot of which is just choosing this or that... but I had no idea there would be 8,000 choices! Most of which I had no idea what any of it even was! There has to be 100 front axle choices... a gazillion more rear choices... all kinds of different air options etc. I'm going to have to hang out with some trucker dudes to figure out what I have!

So my wife has now "re-thought" how many of these "events" she'd like to travel to.... So I put the order in cancel mode. Having them hold my deposit.. because if this is the case I'm going to drop down to a "car guy type" living quarters and maybe just a two car hauler.
Thinking about how it's used has been a major dilemma for me anyway. I've been wrestling with this for 4 or 5 years now!
The part I like the best about car stuff -- is the people. I like running to shows etc with my other buddies. Sometimes there's 3 or 4 trailers heading out. With the GIANT rig - this would severely restrict where and I could travel and going from Willams to St Helena was a major test of what and where I could go. I want to be able to go freely... WITHOUT hassle. 75' of truck and trailer would ADD hassle not eliminate it.
SO HERE'S THE 63 DOLLAR QUESTION:
If you could -- would you
Go with a "sport truck" 4 door M2 style chassis and living quarter w/ 2 car stacker gooseneck trailer?
Or
Smaller toter home (17') with 2 car stacker gooseneck trailer?
Which platform will give you adequate horsepower and space?
Which will deliver acceptable mobility?
What platform will be most desirable when it comes time to sell?
Would this get the job done?

have you considered a motorhome with a 24-26 foot 2 car stacker???
that way the length is not outragious and the living quarters are super nice, even if you a wifie want to go away with out the cars???
the qestion i struggle with in my descission making is what ti the MOST important hauling cars or comfort on the road??
do i buy a Ironworks setup to move all the cars and display stuff i can find pay a ton of extra fees costs regulations, and have to stay in hotels everynight. or get a big toter and smaller trailer (that can take the majority of what we need) and be comfortable on the road, pull into rest areas or Walmart and set up camp instead of trying to find a hotel at 11 pm that i can park the rig at???
for you i could see the motor home (big diesel pusher ) and a small 2 car stacker trailer being a great option.

If the wife isn't willing to go to a lot of events, then pick up a used one. Let someone else take the big hit. Use it for a couple years, that way you know exactly what you will want in the future. Then sell it or trade it in for the one you want.

When the trailer gets to be too long they are a pain in the rear to manuver. The pivot point is just to far forward.

So glad to see everyone struggles with the exact same issues I do!
Too much trailer - or too much length - more trailer less living - more living less trailer.... Ya know what that leads too?? 75' of living quarters and stacker trailer!
One of the biggest things that bothers me with all of this (not the resale by the way - you guys are thinking with YOUR wallets)... is that I like to caravan to shows or "whatever" with others.... and they end up having to get a hotel and I would end up trying to find somewhere to put 75' of crappola for the night. When I started to look at just pulling into a rest stop --- they won't take 75' long! I'd be halfway out into the road!
I had a one car trailer - with living quarters all spec'd out -- and it ended up being 44' long with all manor of compromises.... and my F-350 would barely be capable of hauling it. It got heavy in a hurry with the living quarters - gen set - blah blah blah... and everyone tells me a long trailer is a PITA... thus I started to look at bigger "truck" etc.
The other thing is everyone tells me NOT to get a motorhome with tag trailer - they tow like crap and are underpowered. I don't want to be going over Mt Shasta with my foot to the floor and the thing wheezing...I want a real truck that is MADE FOR hauling stuff.
BTW - SIEG
I've been inside the one you posted... it's 45' long - is beautiful - but when you put even a 24' trailer behind it - guess where you are in length... with the tongue it's right back up to 75'!
So I was trying to get the smaller "toter" --- with the smaller gooseneck - but with a dedicated bedroom area -- and that's where the 24' living quarters comes in. Anything less than that and you're up in the overhead bunk or pulling out the sofa sleeper. No wife along - I'm fine with the overhead bunk... but when Gwen and I looked at them together - she wanted separate bedroom. Whereas I'd throw a mattress on the floor of the trailer and call it good!
So I'm thinking 16' toter as shown (in white pictures posted) and a 2 car 32' stacker with just a little more space for tools and storage etc... and that puts me in the 60' long area
Musclerodz
05-08-2012, 05:05 PM
Is there really a difference between 60 and 75 feet when it comes to rolling down the road? I would not think so, big is still big. One of the sport trucks may be better size wise, but not sure they would be any better than your ford with a stacker behind it. Does anyone build a Prevost (or similar sized motor home) with a built in stacker and no trailer? That should get you down to 50ish feet?

I'd suggest going to a NHRA national event when they come to your town. Every kind of hauler, tow rig and different types of trailers are there. Just walk around and ask opinions. And as far as towing with a Motor home, unless you get a diesel pusher I think you're wasting your $

Greg, I was reading through the last few pages and figured I'ld throw some advice at you. I really don't think that the overall length is an issue with drivability. It is the long wheel base on the truck that creates problems for turning and getting around once you are off the highway. We have a Renegade with the 17' box and a 48' stacker behind it. I think that we are just under 80' bumper to bumper. We have towed smaller trailers with the truck and I didn't see too much of a difference. You will have no problems on the highway, truck stops, rest areas, and just about any car show or track event. Around town is a pain in the arse until you get some good seat time and confidence of what you can get yourself out of. The long wheel base on the truck makes maneuvering difficult and you really have to plan out your route and know what you are doing. Backing into a tight parking spot is tough because the truck takes forever to swing around or get the trailer to change direction. It is a little bit of a pain, but it is definitely worth it in my opinion to go with the toter vs a Sport Chassis or pick up.
As far as the toter home goes, you are going to want the big truck with the big motor. We have a 450 HP cat with a 12 speed auto and going up any decent grade the thing bogs down to 30-40 mph even half loaded. Hitting some of the long pulls through the mountains you can be down to 20 mph for close to an hour. Not fun! Too much truck (power, brakes, towing capacity) is way better than not enough truck. I would definitely get the extra height (insert Greg Weld short joke of choice here) in the bunk of the truck as well. Ours is standard height and if you are laying on your side, you are pinned against the roof. I would do the larger slide out as well. I think ours is a 6' or 7' slide out. I have seen newer trucks with a much larger slide out that really opens the interior and doubles the space.
The toter home is extremely nice going down the road having the fridge, bathroom, couch, tv, microwave, etc... right there. The ride quality and the air ride seats are a huge difference. We also have a F450 dually and smaller gooseneck trailer. You honestly get beat up and worn out on long drives in that. The Renegade is comfortable, you don't get worn out on the long hauls and arrive fresh and ready to go.
On the trailer, I would go big or go home. Trailers and garages are always too small and you always wish you got the larger one after you run out of room way quicker than you thought. Skip the A/C on the trailer. We have turned ours on maybe 5 times in as many years. Definitely get the generator and compressor. E-trac tie down system is a must. An onboard fuel tank for the cars is a cool idea that I want to incorporate into our trailer. If you get a ramp door with an internal lift, make sure to go on the big side with the lift. We have a 4,000 lb lift that struggles to lift 3,500lb cars. I really like the ramp door and internal lift vs the liftgate back door. We have used the lift countless times to work on cars at events. You will lose some upper deck floor space since the lift will not go all the way to the back door like a full upper deck will.
There is my 2 cents. Give me a call or shoot me an email if you have any questions.

well, I didn't mean it the other way.
We all know he isn't going to find a sugar momma like Gwen anywhere else. If it wasn't for Gwen working and making all the money, Greg wouldn't be going to any of these events. Now that she is retired and went to an event, and met a few lat-g guys, she might be looking at getting a job again, or making herself busy when Greg asks her if she wants to come along.

Phil ---
Great help! And exactly what I've been thinking about. I want to park this in my back driveway alongside my shop. In order to do that - I have to pull past my street (I live on a corner) and back it around the corner then down the street and another 70* to start the trailer up in the driveway. These are neighborhood sized streets -- with grass to the edge of the street etc... and I watched a 28' box truck make this maneuver the other day -- it barely made it and he didn't have a trailer to deal with.
I DO NOT want to store this offsite. That really makes a hassle out of it -- prepping to get ready - with all the rain etc... so it's in my driveway or I'm not doing it.
And it's not the highway driving I'm thinking about - it's the before or after an event where I want to use the thing to putz around. I'd like to be able to pull into a "view vista" site and have lunch - take a pee - or just relax etc. So it has to be more for me to just goof around in than just "show to show".
Even more importantly is that if Gwen isn't going it doesn't have to be as fancy. So I asked the dealer for his inventory status of his smaller rigs - I'll still have to have the trailer built and will make that LONGER perhaps.
Good info on the A/C - that's EXACTLY what I thought -- no need!

The backing into your driveway i've seen it. will be worth the price of admission the first few trys, call me i will bring a lawn chair and beer!!
Luckly the hard part of the manuver is on the driver side so you have way better visibility. I used to back our trailer off a standard 2 lane rural street with huge ditches on both sides, the truck was a 300" WB with a 45' semi trailer into a widened driveway, and then 300 feet long as long as you can get over the one front wheel being in the ditch it's all good. Your driveway is not 90 deg to the road and that makes it way easer. You will want to paint a line on the driveway on the driver side so you can "Drive" the trailer wheels on it and not have to worry about hitting the retaining wall with the rear pass side of the trailer because you will have NO idea where it is. you will not be able to see ANYTHING on that side of the truck due to the turn, so a nice white line to follow would make it a breeze. I would be more worried about getting past the Fn tree in the middle of the road!!. OH and you will have to add to the gardners monthy bill to fix the guys grass across the street lol.

^^^^^^^^^^^ Exactly right!
I was thinking about how smart I was "belling out" the driveway toward the west.... because that is the side you can actually see. I can do my truck and trailer without ever having to pull forward for a restart... but I've got my marks down and I just follow the trailer. But with the rig I ordered - I really don't think I'd get it in and out of the neighborhood. You're right about the tree at the entrance!

I ran it for 4 years but i have to say it was a lot of work, prep ,cleaning, waxing.Once on the road it was great. It was challenging on backroads, bridges narrow roads and weight limits.I got stopped at the Ohio tolls several times for being over weight, they scale you at tolls.Made me turn around and seek alt route.
It just took the fun out of it as me and my girlfriend [co pilot]loved to pull off and see the back country but with the trailer it was difficult.
Hope this helps
I've down sized
I do miss bringing that second car

Scott -- You hit the nail square! I L O V E the back roads and H A T E the Interstates! And the thing that got me thinking about all of this "length" etc is the trip I took from Thunderhill track over to the Napa Valley.... Hwy 20 was exactly the kind of roads I love to travel on... a "stop and smell the roses" kind of life... and as you said - there were all kinds of "don't do this and don't do that and you can't go here" issues... and I "felt" big just dragging the trailer with my dually.
The washing and waxing thing -- I do with my cell phone.... as in "yo buddy -- come over and wash and wax my rig" so that's not an issue. And I want it in MY driveway so loading food - water - cars - etc is not a hassle. And in the end - I might reach the same conclusion you did... but I'm also not at all concerned about the total lack of resale. That just isn't an issue. The ISSUE is how I want to use it.... I'm trying to build in some freedom to roam... and bigger seems to take that out of the equation.
I also do not want to be hassled all the time with the issues you point out - over length - over weight - blah blah blah. So thanks for pointing that out.

Yes keeping on your property is key. I had the space at home made it great getting ready for the trip. I wasn't concerned about resale i bought it because it was what i wanted. No regrets.
It really freaked out my co pilot on some of my excersions as i drove it like my duelly:lol:
After my experience keep it simple
Good luck Greg:thumbsup:

Greg, you're really messing up my long term plan!
Step 1, Introduce myself to Greg Weld
Step 2, Use words like "cute" and "eeeeeeehaaaaa"
Step 3, Become best friends with Greg Weld
Step 4, Have Greg Weld want to haul my car to events all over the place.
Really I would think that the smaller toter (living space) would be the ticket. Most the events you attend are fair weather and the only time spent in the rig would be to make some food or crash out. Shorter with a slide out sounds like the way to go.
Times a tickin, get this thing built. We've got Bonneville in September!
eeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaa!

Dan...... very cute!
You left off #5 -- sponsoring your car / engine / truck
Bonneville is on the bucket list!
Smaller living quarters - is exactly where I'm headed! I had the dealer (Sport Truck RV - Chandler AZ) send me his inventory thinking that maybe he had something already built that would work -- sadly the inventory is.... all white --- Cheap ass OAK cabinets --- and small motors (450hp MBZ).... The 14' toter was quoted at $175K.... I'm not spending that on small white oak ugly!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHAAAAAAA
As it turns out - the factory was having trouble with being overweight on the front axles of my designed rig.. so it most likely couldn't have been built the way I wanted it.

I was informed today that they can't build the 24' toter with the way I want it. Engineering can't seem to get the weight balanced and it's too much on the front axle.
So it's back to working with the dealer to find a happy medium. Unfortunately I'll be heading to Italy next week -- so it'll just have to wait. Oh well, I've been messing with this for 5 year now - another couple weeks ain't going to kill me.

Step 5 isn't needed....yet. The Studebaker we run is fairly stock, running in the 130 club. If my math is correct, which it should be, we should get real close this year.
Bucketlist?? Just do it, it's pretty much the birth grounds of speed, the church of horsepower, the great white dyno.
I hear you on the oak, it reminds me of Kenny G and a bottle of merlot. The white isn't so bad, easy to change.
I looked at the website and tried to spend your money on something, it's tough. With all the info given on this thread I don't see anything they have that fits the bill. Cool stuff but, ehhh.
When you say 24' toter, how is that measured? The living quarters are 24' or the overall?
I hear Italy is nice this time of year, I'll be in Wenatchee, kinda the same.

24' is the living quarters floor space.... and that makes the "truck" 45'
I love Wenatchee! Great town and I had a great customer over there. I'll be at the Monaco Grand Prix. Is there a go kart race going on in Wenatchee? I may change my plans!
If I thought I was going to go to races every weekend with a bunch of guys and greasy hands etc - then I wouldn't care about the interior -- but I want to use it more like a motel on wheels with some toys with me... so then I get particular.

Have you been to Monte Carlo before, GW? It is like a different world; every thing and every one is dripping & oozing money & high fashion...a different level from anything I can find in the 'States for sure. We spent the day there pretending, trying to absorb what it's like to live so ostentatiously. The cheapest apartment we found (1br, no view, 1st floor) was E6m and another E300k for a SmartCar parking spot; not for us, haha. Have you ever thought about grabbing a vacation pad there?
If you have time, I highly recommend walking the track if you haven't before. I believe it must be obligatory for exotic car owners to goose it through the tunnel because every 30seconds or so you hear another v8, v10, v12 shrieking through.
Don't forget to pack your best Velcro shoes

I'll be the one there in cut off bluejeans - and a grease stained tshirt...
wearing my rolex Daytona of course!
Walking the track is great advice. I'm not sure we'll be able to do that but I'll try to. I think we'll arrive too close to when they're practicing etc so the course may already be in control mode.
Here's where we're staying - our room has a balcony on the Fairmont hairpin... and apparently you can see a good deal of the course from the roof which is set up to cater to "us" (people there for the Grand Prix).

To get this thread back on track ---- <pun intended> ---- I'm thinking (and I'd like to hear opinions) on maybe backtracking halfway... and going with the Sport Truck RV M2 chassis with a 450 MBZ diesel and a TWO car stacker with smaller living quarters up front. Maybe 14' of living quarter (on the flat floor) bedroom sleeping area in the overhead. I think I could do this in a 44' trailer... and the tractor part would be much smaller overall.
Will work on this more when we get back.
Have your ran the hp to wt ratio's for each package?
The Sport Truck is small enough that it would add to the flexibility of the package and you can drop the trailer and go out on the town with the truck.

The problem with a truck like that is that because it's not an RV you will have to get a license to drive that rig, Legally. Even with my F-450 I was required to have a license legally. But those M2 class trucks have never really impressed me, they lack power and seem to be horrible rattle traps. I kinda thought with all the drama you "could" have to entail you might as well go to a real truck. That's how I ended up where I'm at.

Not sure what they do about that -- as far as a CDL -- because you're right - the Truck GVWR might make it just enough that a CDL is required. I'll have to ask DMV about it. The trailer would have living space but it's not motorized.
So maybe back to the Toter - with a gooseneck two car stacker.

I don't know about that, if it is not commercial, you shouldn't have to have anything special to drive it. In theory, he could flat out buy a semi, and drive it with nothing special, as long as it is personal. This is a big discussion on other boards with people that move personal loads that have some weight to them.:)

All single vehicles with a manufacturer’s weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
All trailers with a manufacturer’s weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, and a combined vehicles’ gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.

You guys will be sick of this thread -- but I FINALLY ordered the trailer that I need and was my original "idea" back about 2 years ago... with a few mods -- mostly -- it's going to be built all "racer boy" in the interior -- as in aluminum skinned cabinets (in red) - like a high end tool box - with stainless steel counter tops -- like you'd have in a nice shop.... and coin floor done black and white checkered... even the dinning table is going to be stainless steel top.
28' box - 14' living quarters - so 50' overall including the 8' "overhead"
going with ATC trailer - all aluminum
triple axles - spread
diesel gen
heat & A/C
Extra height
all white .050 skin --- Will do something like a wrap for flames etc
Girard awning
slide out where sofa is
single car
Waiting for them to give me weight so I can order a new truck.
Deposit wired today - to Poulsen Trailers in Logan Utah. Dave Poulsen has worked with me for about 2 years and stuck by me thru all the iterations -- and even when I told him about the giant rig he was enthusiastic and gracious.
This last trip with the roadster -- going with two other rigs -- made me realize that too big is stupid -- it's the most fun with OTHER PEOPLE - and Other people don't have giant azz rigs... and when we're all together at some track event -- we can just use the crap out of it and nothing will get scratched or dirty etc... it's just going to be a nice big toolbox with a refer and a toilet and I can make coffee and get out of the heat or rain.

I would LOVE to try to stick to an F-350 Dually -- which is what I have now. Mine is a King Ranch which I'd never bother to do again... but that's just the leather BS interior. Regular Lariat would be fine!
I just can't pull the trigger until I know the weights.

Jeff -- you summed it up perfectly. It just isn't that big of a deal to unload - cruise - load 'er up and move on. Get a room - or not - which is what I'd like to have the OPTION of doing... no rooms available - no biggie - we'll just 'camp out'.
The very few times a guy would NEED a race car - the hot rod - and a regular car with him - are far and few between... and even farther if Gwen isn't going to move in it and go for 6 weeks at a time.... No problem - I'm okay with that.... Like I told her many times on the Monaco trip -- I'm perfectly fine with mezzikan food with the boys in Willows... and, in fact, prefer it. :woot:
This trailer is big enough for some space - and not so big that you're screwed all the time. I can still travel with my friends...
Track weekend -- and we're all dirty hot and sweaty.... no biggie - have a seat - grab a beer (or a Tonic in my case, hold the gin)... I got a couple TV's for Charley...

Greg,
You should be very pleaed with ATC. I own two myself, best and lightest trailers Ive ever had. Although not cheap but well worth it for the quality this company puts out. I trashed a fender two years back and the company drove across state lines to replace it in my driveway, saved me a 2 1/2 hr trip to them. I pull the 26ft with a 3/4 ton single axle truck with no problems.

I turned a buddy on to Poulsen when he wanted a TAG trailer... and he was super pleased with Dave and his new trailer is beautiful!
The guy that built my Mustang has an ATC trailer and I was really really impressed at the quality. What I can't get past is the typical oak cabinets and stuff that they use... Thus the decision to go with a Moduline type cabinet in the living space... Frankly it'll make it totally usable -- hassle free - and actually kinda fun and a little different.
With SS counter tops etc I can even let Charley inside.

I didnt know oak cabinets were an option from ATC, maybe they changed there options over the last couple of years. My interior cabs are aluminum. (not moduline but nice) which were part of the package.
One thing Greg- check out what screws they are using lately to mount the marker lights, plate holder, etc. Mine have surface rusted. They did not use ss fasteners in those areas on my model year.

Of course we're talking two different kinds of trailers.... the oak cabinets are the base cabinets used in the LIVING QUARTERS area...not the garage area of these trailers.
I can upgrade to Maple natural, cherry stain, or black...but just thought it would be more fun to do the toolbox look.
They use C-TECH cabinets -- and I've spec'd those out throughout the trailer.

I'm working on ordering a new trailer. This time around I'm going to finally actually order a trailer that will make use of my F-350 Dually.
I'd really like to get this RIGHT - the first time... so I'm looking for your help on pluses and minuses -- things you'd never do - and things you wish (unlimited check book items) that you had.
Trailer is ATC 40' - with 14' living qtrs... triple axles (spread axles) - all black - .050 rivetless skin... gooseneck.
I'm looking for ANY ideas - brakes - landing gear dos and don't - interior ideas - bigger liv qtrs - smaller? Built ins?
if you hate having a bigger trailer because it became a PITA - or do you wish you'd have gone a bit bigger?
Totally open discussion.
I figured you would hire guido to trailer your cars to the event and you helicopter in on race day.

Sometimes an old addled brain takes awhile to get to the right way of thinking...
I've ordered the trailer -- From Poulsen in Logan Utah...
50' ATC Gooseneck - 14' of living qtrs - 28' garage space - C-tech cabinets - diesel generator - heat and A/C - triple spread axles - on air ride - with air over disc brakes.
I ordered the truck from SportTruckRV - in Chandler Az
Got a Freightliner M2 - 112 (bit longer) with a 470 hp DD13 with 1650 Ft lbs of torque. Allison 4000 TRV tranny - air ride front and rear axles - glad hands for the air in the trailer and the trailer brakes... on spot chain deployment system and the coupe de gras... 4 air seats. Took the bench out of the back and put in two more air seats and a console from front to back with separate A/C for the rear.
Ordered everything in WHITE... bag the fancy colors...
