I am in the process of replacing the valve springs in a 91 5.7 TBI with COMP CAMS 981-16 springs and retainers. I bought the kit Comp Cams K12-249-4. The exhaust valve retainers have what I believe is a "rotator". Should this be reused in place of the new COMP retainer for the exhaust, or is it necessary?

I would leave them out, check the installed hieght for cam/valve spring specs and install the new retainers as you would on the intake side. The rotators add valve train weight and really have no buisness on a motor thats going to turn a reasonably high rpm.

I beilieve there intended purpose was to distribute heat evenly around the exhaust seat.

Cant hurt to pressure check your valves, if you have the heads off, to make sure there sealing tight.

This motor won't see much past 5000 RPM. It's basically stock, putting on long tube headers, 3704 Eddy TBI intake, and the Extreme 249 cam kit from Comp. Motor ran good when I tore the truck down. Just resealing it, new melling oil pump, water pump etc.

Installed all the new Comp Cams parts today, seals, springs, retainers, keepers. All the installed spring heights checked out within spec. Thanks for your advice.
