Pro Touring performance

I was wondering how the Pro touring cars stack up with the new age muscle cars like the new Camaro, base Vett, Mustang 5.0 , Shelby Gt 500, and the SRT Dodge products?
I ask this because the above are staring to be pretty good cars and really start to perform with some simple mods.
I know the PT cars are about older cars running like the new ones but does anybody have both and how does the handling, braking and straight line performace compare?

Here's were there is no comparison:

Cost to build a 69 Camaro (as example) to compete at the level of a new factory Camaro. :unibrow: The new one gets no thumbs up or horns from truckers on the freeway - garners no "wows" from complete strangers and never causes a impromptu car show while getting a tank of gas.

At OUSCI 2009 there was a couple brand new modified Mustangs and a few brand new highly modified Camaros. Some were not entered other than for exhibition so not all times are posted.

Check the results out yourself. Note the times and distances of the 2010 Camaro versus some of the PT cars you ask about.

They stack up well.
Our 65 Pontiac Tempest won the overall autocross competition on Hot Rod Power Tour in 2010, beating 168 cars including ZO6 vettes, Porsches, Ford GT, Shelby GT500, RX8, 350Z, etc, etc. It has run 12.36 in the 1/4 mile. At Car Craft 2009 it beat AUdi R8, a couple Vipers, Z06 etc, it wasnt the overall fastest, but was in the hunt. We recorded 1.08 with Chris Jacobs 66 Chevelle, when Randy owned it. Our Vega is a low budget car that finished 3rd in the AX at Holley LS fest, and 2nd at Car Craft RSE beating a number of late model cars. That has run 11.98 and I hope to hit 10's on spray.

The cost to build an old car to current car performance levels is probably more than buying the new car in most cases.
However, anyone can go out and sign on the dotted line for a new car.

Just confirms why Pro touring is so popular and why I want a PT car over my 2008 Saleen.

I wouldn't mind doing a newer Challenger all pro-tour. With that being said, there's no "WOW" factor like driving an old school muscle car with the pro-tour flavor. It can handle like all heck and have the old school looks.:thumbsup:

When I first asked myself this same question, I set my goals at being "only" just as good as a late model car but after more thought about it, I want to be just as good as a MODIFIED late model street car. It might take awhile to get there but that's where my sites are set.

Super Chevy magazine ran an article in the Dec.2009 issue about the Nitto Tire Suspension and Handling Challenge. The challenge compared Pro-touring/G-machines to the stats of a 2010 Chevy Camaro. I believe they did it again this year, but I don't think the article has ran yet.

Nothing compares to a great set up PT car from the 60's ot 70's for me. You will always find someone faster in any arena, but to pull up to a Z06 and keep up is cool, IMO. Cost will always favor the newer stuff. It's all good, enjoy what makes you tick.

How good can you drive, and how good can the people you intend to compete with drive?

I've beaten Vipers, Z06s, BMWs, an Audi R8, a Ferarri 360 Modena, and a whole bunch of Camaros and Mustangs... I've also had my ass kicked by several mostly stock Miatas on street-tires. :lol:

I recently autocrossed an '05 BMW 330i that I honestly thought didn't handle as well as my Chevelle... but I was 3 seconds/lap slower than the guy who owns the car, so with a little more seat time and adapting to its understeer characteristics, I could probably have been faster in it than I would be in my Chevelle.

My car just has more adjustment that makes it easy to make the car adapt to me instead of me adapt to the car.
