I'm not sure you'll be happy with the way it looks in five years (or sooner). If it is something you really want to by all means go ahead and get some round tail lights, you could use Corvette ones, Ferrari ones, Nissan GT-R ones...

yeah it would look unique but the 69 tails are already perfect...
now if it was a 67 or 68

It's already been done a few times and looks awkward imho. Tyler did it on 50/50 and is now changing it because it looks dated. I think you have to be very careful changing a 69 body, GM got the styling right on them.

I think the tail needs thin wide lights rather than round

I know it's hard to be different and come up with different ideas for a '69 Camaro.

But for resale value stick as close to original as possible.

Here's a perfect example of a builder trying to be different and ruining the classic look of the original style:

So to answer your question, I wouldn't do it. :_paranoid

thanks for all the imput guys. just something that crossed my mind.

if I would do it I would go with GTR lights, because of the offsett diameter but will keep the mod as subtle as possible. the convertible does not look good at all.

but for now its just a thought..

thanks

When I was trying to decide on a car project I had ideas about getting a Camaro and switching to round taillights to imitate a 72-74 Cuda. I ended up buying a 73 Cuda. As other's said I haven't seen a Camaro with round tail lights that I really liked. Perhaps look at using Cuda lights if your set on it, I haven't heard of anyone trying them out. I think the sculpting in the tail panel around the Cuda's lights helps them look right.

I am now really liking the square/rectangle tail lights of the earlier Cuda's and Camaro's. The grass is always greener.

I'm not digging it as well. Those lights do look good on the Corvettes and GTR's.

I'm generally not a fan of drastic aesthetic changes on classic cars, so I personally do not like them. Do what you like best though!

That actually doesn't look bad...the bigger lenses fill up that area better than those tiny ones I've seen.
No bumpers on a 1967-8 is a great look,69's have to have bumpers to look good.

Anyway you slice it,round lights ain't gonna work and it's always going to look like an oddball.

I went to a good car show and a killer looking 69 was there. Until I discovered it had round taillights. I observed every dude that circled around to the back of the car either rolled their eyes (if alone) looked at each other with the "What the Hell was this guy thinking" that we've all given to another car buddy, or just plain out shook their heads "NO" and dismissed the car altogether.

In my opinion, the 69 Camaro is a "Holy Grail" car and one should walk lightly when trying to modify perfection. Suttle stuff...OK. hanging a mustang front end on a 69 Camaro? Nah, IYKWIM.

Don't do it dude, you'll regret it.

One of the strongest design elements of the 1st gens, particularly the 69 is the wide concentric shapes of the rear tail panel and tail lights. Each character line was intended to be a sequence of offsets. The recessed wide rectangle or trapezoid at the front and back of so many muscle cars is very iconic. It's a clean look.

IMO the most successful designs were the ones that didn't fight that form factor by using some shape that doesn't relate. The general shape of a 69 tail light is close to perfect but there's always a way to personalize it.

I think the Vette tail light configuration was stale at least a decade ago and it doesn't help the rear end at all other than being able to say it's "custom". I'm not a big supporter of change for the sake of change.

It is fun to play with ideas though and that's a great way to experiment with them. Good luck.
