OK, some of you have known about this build and some may have seen some magazine blurbs about it......now, it's finally time to track the build here! Anvil Auto is breaking into the Mustang world in a very huge way! It all started when I heard that Steve Strope of Pure Vision (purevisiondesign.com) (Hammer, Z Nova, 515 Charger, Petrol Charger, etc., etc.) had a '66 Mustang project for sale. I told Steve that the early Mustangs just weren't my cup of tea, but if it were a '69 (my favorite) I may just be interested. Steve did a little homework and realized that some of the components from the '66 project could work on a '69. So, Steve and I decided to look for a good, clean original '69 sports roof that would make a good candidate to go under the knife. After looking everywhere on the west coast, I found one on e-bay right in Steve's back yard in Simi Valley, CA. He went over to the owner's house one night and called me to tell me it looked like it could be the one. Upon Steve's approval, I made a deal with the guy and we went over to the his house to pick it up. It had very little rust and only some driver's side rear damage which isn't an issue (you will see why later).

Yeah I was wondering why there wasn't a build thread.
I saw it when we came down to the El Toro event. It will be pretty cool.

Here's a rendering that Tavis Highlander did early on showing the original concept Steve and I discussed late one evening. I also did a little work with some plastic model kits to try out some ideas before cutting apart our candidate. The final product should be pretty close to this rendering, but more agressive (despite the not so sinister off-white paint).

Funny Matt! You were sanding away like a mad man the last time I saw IT -- and YOU - at Steves shop. It was looking like a killer project even then! Glad you've got it going on now.

It's interesting you say that Mike. It was Steve's idea to go white. He wanted to do something different and looked at the new Ferarri pallet. When everyone is zigging, the best thing you can do is zag. I have to admit, white just wasn't on my radar and it was like a slap across my face when Steve suggested it. After I came to, and looked at the Ferarri web site at the color, I started to warm up to the idea. Plus no one would expect it, so I said, OK, let's do it. Now, it seems that maybe others are thinking anti-murdered out paint schemes too. The other thing that I sort of predicted, but only now am realizing is that the next big thing would be 69-70 Mustangs. I've always liked those years best as they are the most agressive looking before they got bloated (although those Mach 1s with the almost horizontal back glass are soooo cool) and before they went gas crisis on us (Mustang II). I think there might actually be more Mustangs at SEMA this year than '69 Camaros. Yeah, you heard it here first! That's my prediction.

There are a lot of modifications on this car, but some are so subtle that you won't notice them right away. That's sort of Pure Vision's calling card, but I pushed for some things that probably make this a bit more outside of Steve's normal comfort zone. The hardest thing to do is to make changes that don't diverge too far from the factory sheet metal, or seem to anyway, but still enough to be worth the effort. There are Easter eggs all over this car, so I don't want to blatently just list them here as to spoil the fun of finding them. I will, however give some clues. Take a look at the tail panel. It's been modified in more ways than one.

The taillights are different the stock one mounts from the inside. These are like a 68 with the holes for the chrome which holds the light to the taillight panel.

I worked on some of the parts we will be producing in carbon fiber myself including the rear bumper. Originally Steve had the steel bumper de-chromed and I was going to have his guys weld and grind on it to make the mods I wanted, but we both agreed that there had to be a better way, so I went to town on some foam and fiberglass. Mick's guys from Mick's paint did the final touches on it as well as all the other panels that are being molded to make the carbon fiber parts.

BINGO! We have a winner! It was more work than it looks as the two tail panels are just different enough but similar enough to still make it possible.

We have a drawing like that on our gallery page on our web site, but I think most people prefer the flip up in the rear on the 69-70s since it's such a trademark of the car. We are making a custom 3 pc. spoiler extension that actually extends the flip up spoiler a little. So, I suppose in essence we are doing the opposite of what you would like to see. I figure if you like the look of the straight back trunk lid, one could start with a 65-68 or a 71-73. I believe if you knock down that built in flip up in the rear of a 69-70, it may wimpify it too much (sort of like castrating it). I also know that these Mustangs are a bit tail happy and light in the rear, so anything that will keep them more planted at speed is a good thing. And this car is built for speed!

Matt I agree 100 % about the spoilers not only on this body style Mustang (69 is my fav) but most muscle cars of this era especially ones that came with them from the factory.

This is going to be a kick ass build from the looks of it. Please keep us updated with lots of pics I can't wait to see the end result.

Here are some pictures of the evolution of our hood design which shows how much work that goes into making a custom part to reproduce in carbon fiber. I never liked the stock 69-70 Mustang hoods with that 'beak' or "ironing board" in the middle. I wanted to modernize it while giving it a functional aspect to boot. I really like the vents in the Aston Martin DBS hood, so we had that as our inspiration.
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95/anvil_auto/Anvil%20Mustang/AstonHood-1.jpg
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95/anvil_auto/Anvil%20Mustang/Feb5-10011.jpg
Here, we performed rinoplasty on the beak and started to build up the hump in foam
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95/anvil_auto/Anvil%20Mustang/Feb5-10013.jpg
More foam, then bondo over the foam and lots of sanding and eyeballing with templates
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95/anvil_auto/Anvil%20Mustang/Feb5-10014.jpg

You can see by the illustration below that the Aston hood's vents are too rounded at that corners for the more angular Mustang, so we tweaked them to be sharper. We also realized from these illustrations that the secondary vents off to the sides and further back on the Aston hood just made the Mustang hood too busy, so we decided to axe them.

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95/anvil_auto/Anvil%20Mustang/hoodtopvew.jpg

Here's a screen shot of the computer model we did in Solidworks
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95/anvil_auto/Anvil%20Mustang/astonmartinhoodventv21.jpg

Next we really needed to look at exactly where it made sense to position the vents on the hood. We looked at the underside and we didn't want to have to completely redo the underside bracing, and they needed to be functional, so we reallly only had one area where they made sense. The radiator sits so far back in the car that the more forward recess on the underside is actually where the core support is.

Here's the inspiration for the wheels. Some of you may recall seeing these wheels on some Indy cars from the early 60s. A girl I went to grade school with used to bring in 8X10 glossies of Indy cars her father took who was a pro photog. A lot of the cars wore these wheels. Bitchin'!

Damn, you guys even have a booth this year. That is pretty official. The carbon fiber market for muscle cars must be booming. I remember in Costa Mesa there was someone that was surprised you didn't make parts for Ford Falcons. Are those next?

The car looks amazing even as it is coming together. Hope you guys make it to SEMA so I can see it in person. I'm a big fan of Strope's work, the direction, planning, and attention to detail are second to none on all of his projects.

Oh, and the wheels don't look too bad either. They remind me of the wheels on the GT40 MKII LeMans cars, which I think are some of the coolest cars ever made.

Matt,

This project started in December '09 and the first few posts show the car when we first got it and then I put up pictures in a general cronological order. There has been a lot more work done on the car in the last month and a half. I need to get newer pictures from Steve from Pure Vision and Mick from Mick's paint to post what the car looks like now. Mick is finishing all the body work and metal prep for primer and eventually paint. I got an e-mail from Mick saying that the interior and trunk are pretty much done and the body is really close. I hope to have the carbon fiber hood and fenders in about a week or so which Mick will need to finalize alignment on everything. I'll get some more recent pics up soon!

Kinda reminds me of an episode of "Married with Children" when Al was talking to his neighbor about a perfect evening watching the game on TV with a slice in one hand and a greasy hooter in the other.

Just so everyone knows. Scott built the bitchin' '69 Camaro that looks like the blue Sunoco Trans Am Camaro. He's running some of our parts on it, and is one of the coolest Camaros out there and was featured in Hot Rod not too long ago. Scott is pretty humble, but he's a very good fabricator. That's a great idea! I have '70 Bronco and I want to eventually rebuild it. It has a 351W in it now, but that new 5.0 is awesome. My brother-in-law just got a new Mustang GT and he can't say enough good things about the engine. Maybe that's just what the pro-touring Ford faithful needed to get a jump on the Camaros. The new 5.0 is to Mustangs as the LS is to Camaros.

Have you picked out a drivetrain for this car? It might not be too late to do one, that would put it at the front of everyone's brain if this car was built with a new Coyote in it. Just a thought. Maybe someone will chip in and help develop some new motor mounts and headers to facilitate it. I can't imagine the market wanting to hold back on developing a retrofit for early stangs.

FWIW, I love this project and the rendering. The color scheme, and the wheels are righteous. Can't wait to see the progress!

Goolsby Customs is doing one of the new 5.0's in their Mustang. Supposedly, they had one of the very first motors snuck out of Ford. We had the engine here for mock up in their chassis. It looks like a realy nice, user firendly piece, unlike the 4.6L and 5.4L's

Oh, we have a drive train alright. Check the specs at the beginning of the thread.

Here are some update pics taken a couple days ago aver at Mick's Paint. The rear quarters were pulled out about 1 1/2" on either side. the wheel wells have also been mini-tubbed which will allow us to clear the monster 345 meats on the back. The quarters were a lot of work, but unless you knew it or had a stock Mustang next to it, you wouldn't know it. The front fenders that will be made in carbon fiber have also been widened to accomodate a wider tire and give us a little lip on the front wheels. If you were to look at the car from above, it would have a subtle hourglass shape.

I'm rarely a Mustang fan, especially those that aren't of the 67/68 variety but this just may change the game!

Well, that could be a reality since there are die cast cars of some of Pure Vision's other cars and both Strope and I have contacts at Hot Wheels. You never know!

I'd highly recommend GMP. They've done the 69 Mustang already on a collaboration deal with Welly. In particular, they were the Trans Am series Mustangs. Oh...and not to forget...GMP has done both the Z/28 Nova and HAMMER, two of Steve Stropes creations.

Here are shots of the first parts out of the molds. So far we have a hood and one set of fenders in carbon outer/fiberglass underlayers. I will have some full carbon fiber versions soon which I plan to put on the car, however I want to keep these around as back ups until the car is closer to being finished. I will then have these for sale along with a bunch of other parts we are making.

Any idea of what the fenders might cost?

They will start at arouund $1250 a set for carbon/fiberglass (just like the ones I posted pictures of). Full carbon will be around $2250. Pre-preg (dry carbon) somewhere around $3000. If you look closely, you will see that these fenders are about an inch wider than stock, but with the stock flare, so it's very hard to discern.
Hoods will start at around $850.

The '69 Camaro fenders are ready to mold. Unfortunately, since the Mustang needs to be done for SEMA, they have been put on the back burner. Now that were in paint, we're trying to decide on what to do with the tail panel. Originally it was going to be left white with the screen being black or silver (or metallic gray), but now I'm thinking the tail panel should be blacked out. THOUGHTS?
Original with bumper white too (original rendering had bottom of bumper exposed carbon like following pics).

black inset panel breaks up the visual weight a lot, so the bumpers should be body coloured so there's enough body colour to balance the black

I like the top one, looks real clean, 'sano' as they say. The black screen will flow with the carbon better, being similar in texture/color at a glance. The silver or gray will clash, IMHO, unless it's got something elsewhere to tie in.

nice pedal assembly. everyone comes out with newer crap right after i buy it. ive got the older style of those pedals and im still trying to figure out how to put new pads on them. their new design is pretty sweet.

Here is a pic of the front half of the wheels before the back hoops are welded on. Larry Dove, president of Evod Industries e-mailed them to me. I just got back from Texas yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to go up to Pure Vision to see them, but Larry dropped the wheels off there on Saturday. I'll be going up there tonight or tomorrow. I'll be sure to take more pics then so I can post updates.

Here's a shot of the wheels with the back hoops welded on and the tops of the spokes machined. They look killer and they're still not done.

Here's one of the wheels when we dropped them off at the powder coaters. Evod sanded and polished the tops of the spokes which was a big job and turned them around in no time for extraordinary results! The tops of the spokes and the polished rims will be masked and the middles will be powder coated a sort of magnesium color.

I'm really diggin' the '71 Mustang you guys are building too! You going to get it to SEMA this year? It's got to be the coolest looking 71-73 Mustang I've ever seen. No attempt to hijack. I wish I had seen your battery shut-off cable earlier. Very nice! I did something similar, but used an alluminum push rod and a bellcrank on the roll bar to put the shut-off near the trailing edge of the drivers window. It would have been easier to fire-seal with a cable.

Here's a nice touch. It's a map light (between the sun visors) from an 80's fox body Mustang from ebay that has a swing arm that unclips and can be pointed in any direction. The plastic base cover just happens to match the red interior color exactly, so it didn't need to be painted. It's one of those things that just happen work out perfectly which rarely happens when custom building a car. Everything else is usually more of a struggle trying to get things to fit just right, etc.

OK, back to the details then.
These are the front brake duct cooling bezels. I first carved a foam pattern by hand with a lot of back and forth trial fitting to the front valance until I had something I was satisfied with. Then I handed it over to one of my designers who recreated it in Solidworks and made a mirrored version for the other side. We then printed them out on our 3-D printe and cleaned them up. Once I fitted them again, I tweaked them some more until they fit really nice. I then made the screens and put them together with the ducts that one of Steve's guys made by modifying the original turn signal buckets welding on steel tubing on the back and blending the transition.

MaTT --

After seeing these photos -- I think I liked you a lot better when you were covered with sanding dust and sweat (kind of the corn dogged look) ... and looked like "one of us"!

I almost made a joke about you having to upgrade your photobucket bandwidth after posting the mansion pictures up a few days ago. Looks like you just might have to upgrade after all.

Looking forward to seeing it in two weeks.

Sorry about the lack of band width problem. It's fixed now! So, now on to some more detail shots.
Here's the one and only Steve Stanford doing the pinstriping on the edge of the rear stripe.
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc95/anvil_auto/Anvil%20Mustang/Oct15052.jpg

Here's the rear end taped off for pinstriping, but otherwise done except for the rear glass. Luckily NPD in Ventura was open until 9 PM on Friday or we wouldn't have had rear glass for the mansion. The glass guy didn't realize that his supplier gave him the wrong back glass until about 5:30 Friday night! Yikes! NPD had it in stock, so he went and picked it up.

Here the 345s are being fit to the rear axle. The widened quarters and agressive wheels and tires might be the sexiest thing on this car.

There's no doubt there will be some comparisons between your car and mine, but they are really so different when it comes down to basically everything. It looks like the year for 69/70 Mustangs. It's about time they got their day in the sun.
You think SEMA is a tight deadline...we have to have it finished in two days for a show at the Playboy mansion!!! Yikes!

I will agree, but I love the level of detail in both cars.

Just about a Week to go.

I'm guessing Baer. If they look weird to you it is probably because the hats had to be made to fit the hubs on the floater, which brings me to my next question Matt. I know you guys probably haven't had time to get it passed a basic rolling/driving state, but I'm curious how easy it was to set the full floater up. Oh, and I feel like I remember hearing that you're running electric power steering. I'd be interested in hearing your impressions on these items once you get everything working.

I'll have to agree with you there! I've been spending so much time with the car, I think my wife is getting a little jealous. She's actually been a real trooper during the whole process.

Yep --- I remind my wife frequently that I don't smoke, I don't drink, and I don't mess around, and I dress like a slob (car t-shirts and blue jeans, so no clothing costs).... if she wants to find me - just come out to the shed.... so if cars are my only "issue" she's good with that!

Marty,
I need that huge Anvil. I can tow it behind the Mustang, ha, ha!

Make a mold from it and build it out of CF - then you could just carry it!

Car looks awesome Matt, incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail. Congrats!

I don't think I posted this pic before, but it might be interesting to some. These are the polished CNC'd clear plastic parts for the gas cap and horn button before they were back painted.

This shows how Steve and the boys narrowed down the front brake cooling duct by making an oval shaped steel tube that the hose connects to to allow for tire clearance. The rest of the hose that goes to my collector bezels wasn't in place at time of this shot.
