View Full Version : Hagerty Dropped Me! No one else wants me!

I know there are alot of threads discussing the pro's/con's of the various collector car insurance companies, but at this point I seem to be running out of options! Why? Because I am 23, and got a speeding ticket.

Hagerty has insured my 69' for the past 4 years with my father listed as primary and me as secondary since I was underage. However, they require a perfect driving record for youths and with a speeding ticket - they booted me. Never had an accident in any car, no reckless driving or anything, just a ticket in my now 8 years driving. They were not willing to debate this.

So I started calling around, Grundy, Classic Car, American Insurance, J&C, some random small vendors in NJ, Nationwide is refering me elsewhere.

As soon as they answer I say "I have 2 questions, I am under 25, and I have a ticket" I got past the 25 with one, but ticket sealed it. No one else will consider it. EVEN if I register the car to a parent and me as secondary. I think Grundy said they allow family members occasional driving, but I can't really be listed. My dad doesnt even touch the car, its just me, I need to be listed.

The final issue is that now the only car I own is the Camaro, since I live in Manhattan, I do not have a daily driver and regular insurance (I am on my Dad's). They won't consider me for that either!

This is my car, owned since I was 14 and a foot shorter than I am now! I would like to drive it hahah! Any idea where to go?

BTW - I was paying $250 for $35k coverage...I would like to avoid paying some insane rate for my age either if possible.

I can register in CT with my Dad, or MA with my mom is that makes a difference. Car is in a locked storage facility, under 2k miles a year.

Hmmmm...

Thanks

you sure? I've seen several people who say they have agreed value policies with SF and so far none of them were true agreed value policies. I've been with State Farm for 20+ years for my business vehicles, my agent says they do not do agreed value. They have a collector car program, you agree to a value, pay premiums based on that value, but it's still a stated policy. They get to look at comps in a loss, you may not get the value of the policy if they determine that they can replace your car with a "comparable" one for less than your stated policy.

I'll have to look into that. My good friend is the SF agent. He swears its a stated value. I'm calling him now

Thanks for clarifying Jody!

I got a 'no' from classic collectors and MK, just from my age. The All-state agent I got uses Hagerty, so thats out. Waiting on a local agent my mom uses now.

I don't know about the stated value thing, but I can tell you that State Farm would not insure my 94 Camaro when I was under 25 and had one speeding ticket. The local agent jerked me around; they covered my home, life insurance, and other cars and told me they would cover the Camaro when the ticket got off my record. Guess what, it got off my record and they still would not insure it. Burn in hell, State Farm :fire:

stated value is what you DON'T want............... you want agreed value.

What I don't understand -- is why YOU have to have insurance... if your Father is also an owner. Put the car in your Dads name - do a side agreement on the pass thru should something happen to either of you... and just have him insure it. Make sure that you could drive it and be covered.

Generally these collector car coverages are adamant about having 10 years of driving experience in order to drive the car... which automatically means you have to be 25.... (getting a permit at 15). So you might find yourself "out" regardless.

Use an insurance broker and they'll get anything done.

Jody is correct about the State Farm policy, it is stated not agreed. The only time the "agreed" part comes into play with the carriers that write that type of coverage is in a total or theft loss. If you car is damaged in an accident they are still going to adjust the loss based on reasonable shop rates and parts. As much as people, including myself, would like for the insurance company to write you a full value check when your classic gets hit, the reality of the situatuion is if you have $50 or $100 grand of coverage and some one knocks the front of your car off...there is a lot of repair work that can be done before it is ruled a total. Theft is completely a different story, the car is gone, nothing to repair, they will write you a check...agreed value. Stated Value you would need to prove vlaue with reciepts, apprasial, pics, etc. May still write the check but it is up to you to prove value.

I have my 69 insured through Heacock, which writes through Infinity.

I understand, and thats what I am trying to do, have my dad as primary and just make sure I am covered as a driver. But most guys won't even let someone under 25 DRIVE it. Hagerty allowed it with a perfect driving record, the speeding ticket changed that.

There are other just family things that would make it much easier to register, insure and keep it all in my name. People in all different states, moving, changing jobs, cars, insurance. The best way would be just me - the realistic way is a parent as primary, but need someone to allow me to drive and be covered. Classic said that was possible, but it was kind of sketchy, and honestly I do not want to have any grey areas since in reality I drive 100% of the time.

Thanks Guys.

Heacock said no for age. Condon and Skelly said no for ticket, and even with father as primary.

Classic car, under 25, no daily driver, AND living in Manhattan? That's a tough sell to any insurance provider. I thought all classic insurance providers required proof of a daily driver under a separate policy - but I could be wrong. Let us know how it turns out.

You could call Progressive. You might pay out the nose for it, but it'd be legal. I had them for a few years after a string of tickets and a DWI (not real proud of that one). They insured anything I could think of, even my Lotus. Of course, I wasn't trying real hard to get any kind of stated or agreed value...whatever it took to get a card in the glovebox. LOL.

I'm 35 and ticket free for 7 years now and use Hagerty, car is appraised, agreed value, etc.
