I try to send out a newsletter to the all the customers and vendors we work with on a regular basis to show the progress of some of our build on a somewhat regular basis. But A good portion of our work may not fall under our the umbrella of "Pro-touring", But I have gained alot of great friend through this website and thought a updated thread about different project we are working in our shop large or small might be of interest. We do a lot of different work beyond the Chevy Muscle cars that seem to fill a majority of our shop space.
So here we go. A local Customer that I met a small local show just about a year ago that owns a large engineering firm down the street from me started talking to us about building a 1947-54 chevy truck. I informed him that one of my magazine editor buddies had an older chassis with all the suspension and such set up was for sale for a really good deal. Well after purchasing the chassis, he went to a local truck auction that was selling 47-54 chevy truck stuff. This is the really ironic part, He bought 2 cabs, 2 hoods, 6 doors and 1 set of inner fenders. He had some bed sides and a few other NOS or really solid truck parts in storage already. So this is what we started with.

http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Franks%2048%20Chevy%20Truck/ShopPicsJanuary2010080.jpg
Well after some time of discussion we decide to chop the top 1.5", section the cab 1.75" and lengthen the cab 3". We had big plans. So after some major planning, some precise lay out and cutting and some retacking of all the parts back into position. This is what we had.

Well if you remember back to the beginning of the story my customer bought a big pile of parts at an auction. Well a little ways into the build we realized he bought some ton and half stuff. Now the ton and half trucks we found out have longer hoods, which we thought might help us have less welding when we would have to section the hood to fit the cab buy joining the stock half ton hood to the ton and a half on top. Well yesterday we started layout the hood on the mocked up front sheetmetal to start the surgery and realized the ton and a half hood maybe longer but it is also sectioned 1.75" from the factory....... It fits like a glove. It is just a bit to long, but it fits like we wished we could have planned. Just dumb luck. Here is pic of the stock hood next to the sectioned hood.

Well we also started on a 1955 for a another local guy. We wants just a bad ass black cruizer 1955 chevy with a big horsepower Big Block. We put Prototype #1 of our tri five chassis's under the the car and and have begun mock up. We have to do floors and trunk. We will be mini tubing the rear to run 335/30/20's and have 275/35/19's on the front. The car will sit about 4.5" to the bottom of the frame. We are looking at possibly debuting this at SEMA this year. Carter Hickman did a nice quick rendering for us on the direction we are looking at.

Well We finally got Eric's car to the point we could pull the body off the table and set it on the ground. It does not have the control arms back from him yet as he is digitizing the mock up arms we made. But man it looks good on the ground. The very tall camara man makes it look even lower.

This Nova may not seem normal for us considering what we have done to a few other Novas. But Man is this thing cool.
66 nova, Blown Hemi with tons of real magnesium parts from EBAY. Altered wheelbase, straight axle in the front, Olds rear end. We built the chassis in just a few days. That Miter cut stuff is pretty easy. The customer wanted us to set up the big important stuff and he would take it home and bring it back when he needed help with things. We have worked on 2 other gassers for this guy in the past. They are on our website somewhere.

Great looking stuff. The best compliment I can pay you is that even though the 'vert Nova has a ton of body mods, it is done so well, that it could have been the way Chevy built it from the factory. Subtle but radical.

Whats up with the Chevelle wagon next to Richs Camaro?
ironworks
02-20-2010, 05:27 PM
Thanks guys. The wagon is getting a new chassis to fix the very very poor work that was done at another shop. When the customer drove the car up here from LA with the 572, the frame was broke in 5 places. The customer was completely unaware of the fact when he drove it up here. I will be posting more info on that build very soon.

I'd love to see more pics of that Pickup. The trucks built in the 50's have a lot of potential to be some really sweet rides. I've had plans to do a '55 F100 with a modern drivetrain and suspension, but I have other projects to finish up.
What are the plans for the pickup? any wild chassis work like the '57 you did previously?

The chassis came from a Magazine editor who changed direction on his project and sold his old chassis. Nothing fancy but will do the trick. The customer wants to build this truck for his wife and he has a 41 chevy coupe that will get the deluxe treatment. He has owned the 41 since he was 15 in like 1954. One of those stories. We plan to have a powder coated chassis with metal finished
sheetmetal at the local NSRA show in late April here in Bakersfield. I really think this formula will be the recipe for a possible Truck of the year Contender in 2011.

Well hay we just try real hard. After Building that Teryx for Cognito it really got my wheels turning. If you think it is odd for us to be building SXS utv's, you should see all the work we have been doing to our Go-Karts.... We spent 4 hours last week working on a $1.99 part just so I could have adjustable timing and pull start. The manufacturer of the billet flywheel said there was no way to make it pull start. And the class runs state it must still be pull start. DONE.
175 dollar fly wheel on a 180 dollar engine, with 4 hours of work in a $1.99 part just to pass the boys on the back stretch. And you thought Hot Rods were a poor investment of time and money.....:D

Time for another update. We are full speed ahead trying to get some stuff ready for Del Mar and the Goodguys Road tour stop with Gm Performance parts buying lunch on April 7th from 11am -1pm.
We have been working pretty fast on Franks 48 truck. Most of the major sheetmetal work has been done on the cab, the chop, section and lengthening of the cab. The Hagan Hinges have all been installed. We are working on fitting the door structure and installing power windows and latches before we roll new door skins. The chassis has Engine and trans mounts, Exhaust over the rear axle, the frame kick ups for the desired ride height all installed. We are waiting for the Schott wheels. Our plan to have this as a metal finished Truck at NSRA Bakersfield is still the plan. We were thinking Del Mar might happen and it might but we will see.

The sleeper Packard is in Paint. This car will win money for the Old Man driving a white walled sleeper at the stop light for sure. I laugh everytime I think about how much work we have put into this car. I really learned with this car that not everyone loves the ordinary cars. It has a LS engine from a 2008 truck with custom front suspension with late model truck spindles for the 5x5 bolt pattern and 4 link rear suspension with Single adjustable coilover all around. The owner has never been to a carshow and has no interest in going. He has always dreamed of driving this 1946 Packard across country when he retires. How he ends up in my shop is beyond me, But It is really cool to see the excitement this guy has for his project. He has not cut one corner.

And the Truck. Man have we put some time in on this one also. Frank and Mary have allowed and encouraged us to go all out on this one. We are still on track to have it at SEMA later this year. We have been working on the details for few weeks. We installed some late model Chevy Latches, they work really nice. We narrowed the grille 1" on each side in a tapering fashion to loose some heaviness of the grille. That was alot of work. We hid all the bolts in the bed and made some clean little wheel tubs in the bed. We have been working with Tracy Weaver of Recovery Room on some interior stuff. The plan is to go to paint in July and interior in Sept. SEMA in November and go back to Del Mar with a truck with a bed floor for old times sake.

The rear bumper will be a modified unit off a 67 step side truck. It will look the part for the style of truck we are doing. We have been working on plans for the front bumper and it will probably have to be a completely scratch built unit to do what we want.

We picked up another LOCAL project. We nicknamed it DOnKey Kong transformation. Cuz she sits a little to tall for my liking and probably yours. The customer wants and really nice street car. We are replacing all the suspension with the Speedtech stuff and installing an LS3 with a 4L60 trans. It should be a nice car but really pretty basic. We have ordered all the Marquez and Ring Brothers trim parts with some Budnik wheels on this one.

Uh...No. That's a fender I had off an old Massey I had in the back of the ranch. See, sometimes you have to look outside the box (or in this case the tool shed) to truly find what you need. That's why Rodger gets paid the big bucks.

Justine's car is coming along. I'm working to get Brandon's 55 caught up with his. We have the 540 BB and T56 installed with the Vintage Aire unit with Engine mounts. We have bought a ricks tank and Glide seats. I think both of these cars are 2011 SEMA cars.
My SXS is collecting parts and getting ready to get a cage. I have the R1 engine mounted, the long travel set up. I have been watching Justin and Jimmy to see what I like and don't like about their cars to not do on mine. I'm planning for a baremetal master piece at SEMA. I have the Gear 1 rack, Mastercraft seats, Fuel cell on order, Weller rear hubs, Weller rear kit, I have the engine harness, velocity stacks, and radiator on order. And 3 sticks of 4130.

Haha no, your definitely a young guy. I just thought it was cool how you spent the time to talk to me. I know sometimes people aren't so cool when your not exactly a potential customer or even if they think your not. But it was real cool that you spent the time, and you could tell your passionate about your shop's work when you were describing your new tri-five chassis. There weren't too many pt cars there so I was a little bummed, and it definitely made my day...

We talked about it, but thought it might look like a train. We have some more parts to build for the front end.
" I hear the train a comin...... It's Rollin round the Bend..... And I aint seen the sunshine since I don't know when......."
As much as I like Johnny, We wanted to avoid that. That angle of this picture does the front end no justice. Plus the lack of splash apron and the last lower grille bar treatment will finish off.

First let me say....NICE WORK and PROGRESS!!
Looks like the hood hinges on the 57 allow the hood to open a lot...that's nice to see! It's a major concern for Greg and myself ya know!
Have you considered a carb-style intake with a 4 into 1 elbow or a carb style TB for the 57 and relocating the coils? Love the air cleaner....just thinking out loud!

We cannot do anything to the engine as far as smog stuff goes. We were a little apprehensive on changing the valve covers until it passes emissions as a 2010 special construction car. Since everything is brand new, chassis, body and engine it has to be emission compliant. Hence the use of the Erod engine. The Engine has to stay true to what the 2010 camaro has.

I remember seeing a LS transplant in I what I remember being a shoe box, they painted the whole engine orange, now valve covers, ect...you had to look twice to notice it was a LS! Someone posted pics here not to long ago....perhaps you have seen it? It was very cool in/for a rather stock car.

Well we have gotten the Packard on the road. It handles great and sounds like a big boat. We drove it over to a local BBQ last night and displayed some other cars. The interior is almost done. The customer has not seen the car in a few weeks. Just a a spacious cruiser. We drove it out to Famosa today for to want some heads up drag racing and a highway shack down. I could really get into a simple car like this. It sure does turn some heads.

Any late model big cars you'd compare the ride and drive to?
ironworks
09-25-2010, 04:19 PM
The only late models I drive are an F-450, way smoother then that. 2008 Jeep Wrangler on 37's, way better then that. We also have and HHR SS my wife drives, it is not a tin can as that. So I'm not the guy to compare.
It just makes the rough roads around here seem nice. One hand on the wheel at 65. But I'm sure the car weighs well over 4500lbs. Of all the cars i have I would drive this one across country first. Lots of leg room in the front or rear.
It is a big car. Maybe I can figure out how to do an in car video. I bet it would get boring after 20 seconds. It is really quite and just smooth.

It does not bother me that you said that, We are the most famous hot rod shop that never finishes anything.
What does bother me is the fact you have to be funny with my jokes. That joke is mine. Be funny on your own. So really that is Rodger's joke that I'm trying to get a laugh off of.
And just to be clear this is the 10th car we have finished. But we have done fab work on something like 200 cars in a little over 9 years. There are about 10 big project cars we did most all the fab work on and never got any credit.

4 years ago when I moved from the 3800 Sq ft shop to this 10,000 sq ft shop, I thought we would never fill this sucker up, We had a BMX bike we rode across the shop to the bathroom, because we though the shop was "SO BIG". Now My shop is to full I have Tri-5 chassis's everywhere and prototype Chevelle stuff along with all kinds of projects. It is funny how this Insane truck has snowballed into what it is. Chevelle Chassis update. We are just about ready to cut and form prototype chassis #2. Eric is finishing up some details. But I figured I would share some solidworks drawings. I do not have pricing yet but it looks to be right about 20K as a complete roller, Just no brakes or wheels and tires at that price. It will accept a 335/20 in the rear and not sure on the front yet. We had to do some major work to over come some big issues to get the ride height we have achieved on this project. Well enough Hub Bub.

26 and 28 inch tires.
We will be changing the measurements to a 70 we are taking measurements from later this week.
The 68-72 is very similar but different. But the basic design will be the same.
I think we will do the Ironworks script like the Tri-5 chassis.

But can you flatten it into a sheetmetal pattern to be laser cut.
The easiest way for you to do it is to add all the arc lengths from the edge.
Then calculate how many dimples you want in it. With the spacing then figured out, then design it in the flat.
There is a module for the CAD system I use, to take bent up sheetmetal and flatten it for pattern making but I don't have it. Its alot of $$$

Yeah that lower grade program we use has it, But it will not carry a feature designed after you flatten the part back into the part when you fold it. So I just put the holes in it when its flat and pretend until my vision is complete in metal. Eric and I are just getting slick with what can be done with the sheetmetal feature in Solidworks. We took want would be a few days labor out of that Chevelle chassis with that program.

I have a sheetmetal module on my system but they charge extra for the forming/flatening module. It allows you to design in the flat and bend it, or design it then flatten it.
Keep playing with it you'll get better.

Great Stuff Roger, CAD tip, Use the unfold and fold feature in the sheet metal tool bar instaed of the flat pattern in the feature tree. This way you can unfold the part make your modifications, fold it back up and it will show up in the bent part. In Solidworks at least the flat pattern must remain at the bottom of the feature tree.

Hay Jeff. I use the fold and Unfold. But it is tough to put holes in part that is on a radius. So I just put them in after its flat to get what I want. Sure it lacks on a PDF drawing. But I'm not building drawings.

I'm just trying to get the holes in a radius. Which is difficult to do in general since there is no flat surface to draw on. I have a system to make it happen. It just does not look good in a rendering.

Update time. Well we have been super busy here at the shop. Chassis stuff is really taking off. We have done a bunch of work to the chevelle frames to get raise the bar even further. The idea can from our good buddy Kenny Davis. Not on prurpose, of course. But we have a way to build a frame from an idea he had that we are able to design a frame that is much strong and will not hang down below the pitch weld. So our frame was all ready the tight fitting frame in the industry, but now it will not be visible below the rocker. That has been a big Concern from the customers we are working with. Here is picture of the chassis we developed to fit the customers wagon.
It sits really good on 18's and 20's. This is ride height on coilovers. 4.5' of ground clearance.

We took in this project from a customer. It should be a full tilt cruiser next year some time. More details in the next few weeks. It will be bad. This was a 64k low mileage stocker we drove home. I have not found any rust yet.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/ShopPicsMarch2011065.jpg
We have done a bunch of design work to set our tri-5 frames to give a bit more dish and be able to lower the more. So we here where we are at with the Cognito project. The customer wanted dish on the front wheels and a slammed stance. It is hard with the vette arms because they a so long. This car sits 4.25 from the ground with nothing below the rails.
It looks good. 18's and 20's

The nova is for a local guy who has us do certain apects of the build he is unable to do. We have worked on 3 of his projects and most cars come to us 2-3 times as the project progresses to get items he can't or does not want to do in different stages. I heard it is coming back now that he has all the small parts where he wants. I will keep you update dated on it now that I know someone on here likes gassers.

We have gotten the chassis for the 48 chevy back from the coater and getting everything installed on the chassis. We made quite a few last minute changes. The customer decided that an LSX-376 would work much better then the old stock LS1. We then had to build some better headers to fit the application. He decided the stock control arms were not quite what he wanted. So We made some new ones. The bushings in the control arms were not quite what he thought needed to be there, so we got some Delrin that is prelubed to make more solid bushings. This truck has really coming together nicely.
