I've always liked "the poor man's mustang" because it is kind of the underdog. I had been watching a cherry little 62 (or 63?) hardtop near me for a long time. It went up for sale for $3,500 and I did not have the space because of my '55. I had to make a choice, so I kept the Chevy. (Not enough room for wife, three daughters, AND TWO PROJECTS. Kids are hard to sell! Wifes cost too much to get rid of, I've heard. )
I also used to know a guy who made a hard-core vintage racer '65 Falcon and it was beautiful.
I REALLY like your car! Keep us posted.

Hi
I must ask one question and please dont think im picking at the car ..I like the car and what youve done.thanks for posting the pics ..
Im wondering if you are gonna build an aluminum ? filler to go between the lower grille and the top of the bumper to fill that space in and kinda connect the bumper/grill area....Looks like your very creative and i was wondering.

I havent decided what to do there yet. The valance is as high as it can go to line up with the body line on the fenders. But I want to do something with that gap. I will see what it all looks like once I get my intercooler in the valance opening.

Thanks . . i see what your saying about the line. Thats the fun part "customizing"...I would take some light gauge aluminum and bend it and tape it up there on the backside and break out the lawn chair and just look at the front of the car....but thats me
Keep up the good work and im interested to see what you do..

I would make it out of fiberglass and attach to the front valance. Make a mold of thin aluminum and than tape in on your front valance. Use fiberglass mat and than when it is set up trim to the shape you want.

Lawn chair ? You can see your lawn?
Don't forget the beer, when you can see your lawn you have to have a beer, even if it's non alcoholic. Otherwise how do you get to the point that you only care about what you think instead of everyone else
I can't wait to see my lawn.

First off - this car Rocks. I don't know what it is but I love it. Maybe it's the simplicity that makes it so freaking cool.
As for the gap - make a nice filer piece that you can ad to the front end but make it removeable. The other thing I would consider is some sort of mesh behind the front bumper opening ( which looks awesome BTW ).
Keep us posted with the update and thank you for posting the pics.

Im painting my subframes connectors tonight with some self etching weld through primer.
I will be bolting them in while I plan the rest of the car around them. My front drive shaft loop and rear third link crossmember will be tying into them. But I will need to take them in and out a few time before I can final weld them to the car. The weld through primer will ensure that the back side of the SFCs will be protected.

I painted the subframe connectors and got the blinkers all wired up and the horn mounted and wired.

So the secret that I have been working on with TCI, I will be using their 4-link cradle as a starting point for my 3-link suspension. It will save me a lot of fabrication time. It will still be heavily modified. Here are some quick mockup pictures. Including some of my other parts for the 3-link.

yellow is steel.

I cut the center out of the TCI crossmember, it was nice .156" wall DOM. I got all my datum points laid out and measured yesterday. Since the rear end is currently in the location I want it (correct ride height and centered) I didn't want to change that. Next step is start cutting aluminum for the watts link cradle and bellcrank. This should start coming together quickly now.

So today was really productive.
Went to a christmas car show with my dad, we took his ranchero.
I set the pinion angle.
Finalized the geoemtry.
Finsihed the design of the upper link chassis mount. Now I need to cut it out of steel and weld it on.
And I even got some yard work done.
So the project is nearing the end. WOOHOO.

Spent some time making brackets today. These are the chassis side of the upper link. They have an arced slot and will be welded to the frame cradle. Not too bad for a bandswaw, drill press and an array of tools for the die grinder.

Tyler,
Thanks for the compliments.
I will answer your questions here. I dont want to hyjack your thread.
Yes, its a mustang front valance that I widened 3/4". I plan on completely redesigning the front valance. I was going to put a intercooler there but now I dont think I will procharge the car.
I really like the black rims too. But I like the new centerlines better. The wheels completly change the look of the car. It will eventually be grabber blue.
My watts link with bellcrank only weighs 8.4 pounds.
I am always willing to talk cars!

Its been slow progress, I have been painting all the pieces so that has taken time. The main reason I have been slow is that my wife and I found out that she is about 2 months pregnant. I am super excited!!

Well SEMA was awesome, and I got to meet and talk to a lot of good guys and Mary! LOL.
There was a few great things that happened.
Addco is interested in developing a splined sway bar, not the Carbon Fiber one they had on display, and they may use my cars as the R&D cars. I am using their mustang 1 1/8" bar on my falcon right now. It would be a bolt in to my mustang that has my custom coilover conversion on. So it would make for some good pics for them.
American online imports http://americanonlineimports.com/ has developed a GREAT rack for all rear steer cars. It has 8" of travel fits in a similar size package as other racks out there. It is a center take off and they will custom make a center link to your specs so you can design out the bumpsteer from the start. They made the unit out of billet aluminum except for the rack of course, so it is actually quite light. its a power rack and everything about it is adjustable. I looked and talked with the designs for about 45 minutes. I think this is the end all rack for rear steer cars. All you need to do is build your own brackets, but that is the easy part. The only down side is the $2500 price tag. But I think it is worth it. I may talk to them about using my car as a vehicle to display their rack.
The other cool thing was talking with performance automatic, they have a new valve body that will help my falcon be a little better setup for autocross.
I still need to post up my pictures.

Hey Bryce,
Where is the trunk release from? I am going with a fiberglass decklid myself and hadn't thought about a cable release. I'm doing an electric release but it would seem wise to have a backup.
Bryce
01-23-2012, 07:45 AM
I bought it from C&G ford. They are actually about 15 minutes away from me so I was able to stop in and confirm the quality before I bought it. I paid 60 out the door.
The quality is great and work great. The lever is not modern more original.
McMaster has a bunch under control cables.

I autocrossed my falcon today! WooHoo.
It was my first time on an autocross I ran a 77.569. I ran X but they said I was SM class.
Corvettes were running 75-80 a 63 BP corvette ran a 69.xx a super modified sprite ran 64.xx.
I will post up a video after I upload it.
I had a blast, the car is driver limited, of course... I need a quicker ratio steering setup, that is my next big project. I was chasing the steering.....I think my tires rubbed a little. Brakes were great. The rear shocks seemed to get softer as teh warmed up. I think I need to something a little different with my oil pan baffleing. I think I was getting some slosh as my dad noticed that i was burning some oil after a hard turn. Motor was warming up in the staging lanes, so I an electric water pump to keep things circulating while the motor is shut off would be helpful. The automatic held up fine, I started in first and ran second the rest of the course. The trans temps were climbing at the end of my 3rd run I was seeing 200*F. I would like to keep that a little cooler. I really could have pushed the car harder. But that is a respectable time I think. The detroit locker was awesome. My tires were doing their job. The announcer said "that car is very flat through the turns for such a big car" He was talking about me, HAHA. I guess when you see miatas and S2000s all day my car is big.

Here are some pictures of the steering column I built about 8 years ago. It started out as a full length column, now its about a foot long. It is an aluminum tube with 1.5" OD and has a flange welded to it to mount the stock horn and blinker and the upper bearing for the steering shaft.

Here is my 5 bolt to 3 bolt adapter. I like aluminum and I did not like the grant piece and how far it extended the steering wheel.

This is the modified column; it has a bearing in the end of it to support the lower part of the stock shaft.

The pillow block mounts to the stock steering column support. The shaft collars are there for extra support.
I also cut down the blinker switch because I actually hit it while autocrossing.

The car had to come apart to get the stock box out. I even cut the shaft in half to help facilitate the removal.

I had to lift the motor up and move it over to get the headers out.

Not bad for 10 years in the car. The hooker super comps fit great but even with my solid motor mounts I was making contact with the old steering box.

Because I pulled the headers I had to get new inserts for my earls header gaskets. These carbon inserts work great!

After lots of research and some luck at the Big 3 swap meet, I found my new steering box. I could have used my original since it only has 50K miles on it, but it was 19:1 and I have a 65 mustang box that is 16:1 ratio and in good condition, but I would have had to spline the shaft and really did not want to disassemble the box. So I found a rebuilt 67 mustang box 16:1 ratio and it has a 3/4-36 spline. This is the same as my steering quickener and will make this install a lot easier. I will put a u-joint right on the input to the box.
http://media.motortopia.com/files/cars/album_falconsteering/4f5d2f6d0e47e/tn_full_falcon_steering_2JPG_Thumbnail1.jpg (http://www.motortopia.com/photos/668082)
The box is exactly the same case as my 65 falcon box. Since I had header to box contact I decided to take the opportunity to modify the box for extra clearance. I rounded the area where it hit the headers.
http://media.motortopia.com/files/cars/album_falconsteering/4f5d2f7c1f782/tn_full_falcon_steering_3JPG_Thumbnail1.jpg (http://www.motortopia.com/photos/668087)
I then painted it with my favorite, hammer tone gold! All of my suspension is painted this color so why not.
Its hard to get a picture of the box installed.

This plate will cover the hole and mount the intermediate shaft support.

The steering shaft support has a spherical bearing with 25* of misalignment. I bent the plate slightly to accomodate the contours in the firewall. I will get some final pictures later.
Here are the pictures of my bracket for the quickener. It will mount the quickener and two pillow blocks for the steering column. This should end up have very little flex.
It started out as 4x4x1/4 square tube. I love the IMS scrap pile.

Its amazing what you can do with a wood cutting bandsaw and an aluminum blade.
Here are some installed pictures. I only have one of the pillow blocks installed. And the quickener is not installed either. I still need to cut and spline the original steering shaft.

Nope, I am in the middle of adding power steering. My power steering pump and crank pulley finally showed up. I recently added a electric water pump. And just today determined the mounting locations for the new alternator (just ordered it) and PS pump. I will be doing a few more SCCA events at the Q this summer. I will let you know when I go.

a few updates....
I am adding power steering. I have the KRC pump mounted, with custom aluminum brackets. I added an electric water pump and a smaller alternator. I finished all of this the night before a work car show. I made the car show and won first in show. I was voted by a bunch of engineers.
Then I broke the trans the next day. I pulled the motor and trans last weekend and will figure out whats broken.

Ordering some new stuff today.
After lots of research, I determined I only broke the torque converter. I am still going to buy a 1000hp PA C4 with a lifetime warranty. I am also going to send them my valvebody so that they can modify it to a tranny brake this will give me a first gear lockup on decel. Since my old trans is good I will order a new input shaft and keep it as a spare or maybe sell it. The internals are all PA parts.
Hughes is going to build me a 9" torque converter that they spec as a road race converter. It will produce less heat and less parasitic drag and faster reving.
I will also be adding an auxillary fan to my trans cooler, maybe even a secondary cooler.

Random question, but I'm having this discussion with Mike Maier and were trying to figure outa couple things
1) Does the 65 Falcon have the same shock tower height at the 65-66 Mustang?
2) The lower control arms are the same, but how about the uppers?
3) Is the wheel base 109.5 inches or is it shorter?
THanks

Mike is good people!
1) same shock towers, but different lateral seperation. THe shock towers are closer to the fire wall and the hood sits higher relative to the shock towers as well. The upper shock mounts are different too.
2) all suspension is the same except for the centerlink.
3) yep, 109.5.
BTW, I have a 65 mustang and 65 ranchero in the stable if you have other questions. THe cars a really different, even though they are based on teh same 1960 falcon chassis.

I dont have a granada spindle but it is same ball joints as my 65. The tie rod is different and results in bad bump steer.

Time for some updates.
PA finally got my vavlebody sent back and the trans went back together. While I had the trans out of the car I decided to go through the entire thing make sure nothing else was wrong. I thought I had a little too much clutch wear and was seeing too much debris in the oil. I was right, the trans shop that put this together 10 years ago but 6 clutches in the front drum. That would have been okay if there were thinner steels, but they didnt think that far ahead. So the clutches were always slightly engaged and excess wear and thrust load were the results.
http://media.motortopia.com/files/cars/album_c4transmission/50bb6ce4ab3d9/tn_full_11292012161jpg_Thumbnail1.jpg (http://www.motortopia.com/photos/707733)
I also bought a STEFS fabricated pan to help with cooling, it holds one extra quart. But the pan didnt fit over the valvebody, UGGH. So I filed down all the inside welds and woohoo success. They had welded boths sides so I didnt break any seals.
I had also decided to change everything I could to make pulling the engine and trans easier. I installed rivenuts and studs everywhere I could. Just to make life easier.
The pan is one example.

The bellhousing will get studs as well.
I am still waiting for some info from some guys I talked with at SEMA. If their parts will work on my car I will be installing before the engine goes back in. I wont say anything else until I have made the purchase. Except that this is my current hold up.
I reassembled the motor

I have about 50-60 hours in that power stereing alt bracket. It just clears everywhere. HAHA. the pulleys overlap and clear by .100". Those nuts were about 4 dollars each. Good thing I work part time at a hardware store. nothing off the shelf fits a falcon. THe wagons are even worse, HAHAHA!

The thermostat added a lot of restriction. It runs about 170 175 on the freeway and doesnt climb at idle. I run an elctric water pump and fan. So i leave the fans off until it warms up. Which is rather quickly.
I love your car.
thanks

I also updated the steering a little, rod ends for the outer tierods and roller bearings for the idler arm. I will post pics tonight.

Pretty impressive weight and weight balance. I can only dream of getting near 3000lbs with my car.
I'm still enamored with your PS and Alt bracket you built. Did you do a CAD drawing of it first or just go freestlye on the bandsaw with some manilla templates. I'm publicly admitting right now I plan on copying it.:D Please forgive me for the patent infringement in advance.
Do you have any details of the fab process on it? It's a pretty sweet piece of fabrication.

I had a blast yesterday, I think I am more hooked than before.
The car did pretty good. I got 7 laps.
Lap 1 68.990
Lap 2 66.987
Lap 3 66.017
Lap 4 65.820
Lap 5 65.472
Lap 6 65.745
Lap 7 65.499
The transmission was getting a little to hot so I had to skip a few laps and let it cool down. But it was not slipping so no damage! The steering was great and on a bigger course there was no need for power steering. The falcon loves the slaloms and was pushing on the long left hand sweepers. On the last run I stiffened up the front shocks compression and rebound 4 clicks and the rear two clicks on comp and rebound. The car was completly different. Stiffing up the suspension helped control body roll and remove the tendancy to push in the long sweepers. If I had a few more runs I could have really dialed in the car. I am uploading the videos now. I will post them later today.
here are some pics that my wife took.

Thanks Rob, I have an external 10" x 12" trans cooler. I do not remeber the brand. I put it in 10 years ago when I built the aluminum radiator core support. I am adding a fan soon though.
Bryce
02-10-2013, 05:07 PM
So here is my list of stuff to complete before the next event.
The trans cooler needs a fan: installed and wired. Moves some air!
Remove local trans temp gauge and move to the dash: ordered and ready to install
Install 400 lbs/in springs: ordered and all the coilovers are removed.
Install gauge into the engine oil pan to monitor temp.
Notch and reweld the outer shock tower supports. This is needed due to some tire rub. Falcons dont like being lowered or have anything wider that a 215 tire in the front.
Install a breather catch can: ordered waiting for delivery.
Dial in the steering and remove as much bumpsteer as possible. I order high misalignment rod ends. The mustang with a similar set up is down to .015" toe change over 6" of droop.
