View Full Version : Project "SCAR"
Cams-DK

One of the latest projects being built by Roger Burman at the Lakeside Rods shop is a 67 Camaro for Karen Leisinger. Karen has had several first gen camaros built, but couldn’t convince herself to purchase a 2010. So Roger and Karen decided to make the best of both worlds. The car will be powered by a Warren Johnson racing 500 Cu in LSX motor. Horsepower will be somewhere in the range of 1000+. The motor is backed up by a Gearstar 200R4 Trans and a Detroit Speed Suspension. Look for Karen and Roger at one of the Good Guys’ events. Keep checking Eric Brockmeyer’s website to see the rendering of “Scar”.
More info and pictures to come as the build progresses.

My policy is honesty, and I honestly hate it.
My policy is honesty, and I honestly hate it.
I am on the fence. I see some things I like and others that are not to my taste, but it's not my car so big deal. I would love to know more about the engine though.

I know everyone has their own taste and style, but I have to admit I don't see any of it in this build. Seems like a ton of money wasted on butchering an already awesome car.

This is a tough one. I just dont see why anyone would want to make a first gen look like a new gen. Seems a bit backwards.

Dare to be different. There are 1000's of camaros on here and to a non camaro owner/fan they all look the same!!!!!! Yet this one grabbed my attention. However if you had done this to a Falcon i would be dissin it too!!!!

Honesty may a good character trait, but so are charity, courtesy, and empathy, and each should be tempered by the others.

You need to hold back judgement on this car. I've seen it in the construction process and now it is in primer. The Brockmeyer renderings are insane and the car will be as cool as the artwork. I'm not a big Camaro guy but I think this thing is awesome. You really can't see much from these pics so keep an open mind. It will be a contender at Columbus..you can count on that.

It is definitely pushing the envelope. I like the ideas that are going on in the car. Craftsmanship looks top notch, but the pics are pretty small.
Can't wait to see even more of the car.

I have always had the philosophy of "it's your car and your money build it how you want to, who cares what other people think"
One thing I have noticed about this site is no matter how a car is built someone will always be the first to point out " I wouldn't have done this or that" or "I really don't like this or that"......well.......it wasn't YOUR money.
So I say let the guys at Lakeside build the car how their PAYING CUSTOMER wants. Sure every body might not like it but hey that is the whole idea of building a car which is the way YOU like it not how someone else likes it.
The fabrication/craftsmanship is damn good! Cannot wait to see the finished product!

It's pretty clear this car will be a either love it or hate it deal. I'm sure this is something they thought about when it was in it's infancy. The 5th gen just hasn't grown on me like I thought it would. It's just my opinion, nothing personal. I totally agree, whatever floats your boat. It just reminds me of one of those 1st/4th gen combinations.

This guy gets it! The Leisinger Camaro is all about what a late 60's concept car would look like. The bridge between old and new. This was the idea from the start of this project and I'm telling you...you will want to see it in person. The interior renderings and metal work are unreal. The carbon fiber hood is a work of art.. well.. you get the point.

I think Todd hit the nail right on the head with this one.
I, personally am not too crazy about the 2010 Camaros at all. But, looking at this car, in it's current stage, doesn't look too bad to me. Again, need to see more progress before I make up my mind.

I think it's funny when people get bent out of shape when someone says they don't like something or would've done something different. What's the point of posting on here if don't want people's opinions? Not that anyone should be rude about it but I think it should be ok to give opinions respectfully.
I don't personally love the mods done, to me it just doesn't make sense to make an old car look so much like a new model when you could buy the new model, but to each their own. I can at least appreciate the skill and creativity:thumbsup:

Yeah it does seem pretty dangerous to post an opinion contrary to that of the majority. I dared once to post my distain for the flared fender look and got roasted.
This car looks to me to be tastefully done, not my choice but I can apprieciate the craftsmanship in it.

The craftsmanship is stellar, but I can't say that I like it. I'm not really a fan of taking old cars and modifying them to look like a new version. Looks a bit like a Frankencamaro. But who cares. Let's just hope the owner loves it. That's all that matters. It will certainly be unique.

Not sure who you guys are referring to, but we're pretty tight here and respect each other's opinions. I don't think anyone here was bashing someone else because they do/don't like the car.:lateral:
Opinions are like as.....I mean belly buttons. Everybody has one.
The skill to make this car is top notch, that goes without saying. The fabrication involved is HUGE. As for the styling, I'd like to see it finished before making any final call.

It's not the posting of an "opinion contrary to that of the majority," or even one that is not positive towards the subject at hand, but rather the way in which the opinion is expressed. As I said before, I can tell you that your wife/girlfriend "isn't my type," or that she is "wearing a dress that is less than complimentary" without insulting you, but when I exclaim that your wife/girlfriend "looks like a 300 pound hooker stuffed into a pair of jeans made for a 10 year old with anorexia," well, I think we can agree that such a statement would have a much different effect.

I didn't want to say anything while it was in bare metal because, well to be kind, the proportions looked "off" to me, besides, pictures never a great way to judge a car. I though it kind of looked like the car was too narrow for a first gen camaro. Don't know why, but after primer the I like it a lot more. Just one question though, are the quarters and side scoops flared a little bit. I couldn't tell from the angle of the shot if they were straight with the body lines, or sloping downward.

Project Scar looks like it is progressing nicely, love it or hate it I think it's got a lot of creativity and excellent fab work. Cannot wait to see it in paint. I must say that the Grumpy Jenkins tribute car is one of my favorite custom builds that I have seen. I have saved absolutely every picture that I come across. I would love to see some finished interior pics if you have any. The thing I like most about the build is that it accentuates the original character of the camaro. Keep up the great work.

==================================
To All:
I think the car is fresh.
1) I had to make a double take whether the car was a 67 going to a 2010 or the other way around
2) It reminds me in a way of one of the cars you see in a futuristic movie. You know what car it started out to be, but it was someones interpetation of a futuristic, "Dark", Camaro
3) It will be a car that will always grab people eyes at a car rally. "Either you love it, or you hate it"
4) This is to be expected in this hobby. I used to follow the traditional, "Hot Rods". I have seen 5000 versions of a 49-51 Merc., some I like, some I don't, the simple fact is, as things move forward the variations will continue to grow.
5) Embrace the difference, it's not your money. I bet if you look closely you could find something you could at least admire about it, at the very least the dedication someone had putting it together.
6) Many things we love now were strange when they came out. Sometimes they were very strange!
7) Most of the things people do to their cars can be reversed thanks to the numerous parts that are available.
8) Many of these cars we all love might otherwise be in a cube or melted down, if someone wouldn't fish them out of the hell hole they were in.
9) I would imagine that many of the cars that are perfectly accepted by many of us would make the purest of car collectors wretch.
10) This Car IS the definition of the word:
Avant-garde (French pronunciation: [avɑ̃ɡaʁd]) means "advance guard" or "vanguard".[1] The adjective form is used in English, to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.
Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm.
Anyway, my .02$ worth.
When I get my rendering finished and put up, it might be seen as a P.O.S.
Who knows, what does it matter?

Ty-when we finish up the rendering, the only person I care about loving the design is you. Everyone has their own taste and it's impossible to make them all happy.
If there's one thing I've learned since I started doing this, it's knowing that whenever you create something non-mainstream you open yourself up to brutal critiques, especially with the anonymity of internet forums. The day I give half a second's thought as to what some critics say is the day I drop my pencil and start a new career. It's a losing battle at that point.
My role in any project I design is innovating and solving problems that relate to the client's needs and budget. It looks to me like Eric Brockmeyer (I haven't seen the rendering yet) and Rodger have collaborated to do exactly that on this car. Is this car for everyone? No, it's for their client.
I'm not defending the design. I'm just emphasizing the designer, builder and owner relationship.

Ben, Well said! Especially the part about anonymity...people will say things to others on line that they would never say to them in person. Can you imagine walking up to someone you have never met and saying; "I hate your car" and then proceed to pick it apart? Anyone who would do that has issues...size issues..if you know what I mean. This build is great in many ways...but maybe the greatest is, that there are people out there with loot that will build hotrods with there money for the rest of us to talk about and enjoy without having to pay for them. Personally, I think this car is very cool...and remember, varity is the spice of life.

I was curious to see if you saw the remark on my rendering being a P.O.S.:D
I have NEVER really followed the mainstream, and I am anxious to see if my Rendering gets flamed.
If it does, Cool, if it Doesn't, Cool. I will enjoy the dialog either way.
I personally would love honest feedback.
What the hell are we here for if we can't visit with each other honestly.
I know what my goals are with the car.
As long as I achieve those goals, I'm good to go.

The sheetmetal work in itself is amazing.

Looking forward to the unveiling also. The design is quite impressive but like most anything else that is new and somewhat revolutionary it took me awhile to see the brilliance of it all. But now I see it clearly, and knowing Roger and the Lakeside crew like I do, the metal work, paint and all other details will be masterfully accomplished. We are in the process of machining much of the one off billet components for this G machine including the Brockmeyer inspired gauge bezels,Scar script insignias and sculptured sill plates. That air cleaner out of the hood feels to 1980's to me.
All that stuff around it has alot of time and workmanship around it but doesn't work on that car. Everything else on that car is spot on. Rework the hood and shorten the intake to fit under the hood and it would be the total package.

Dave and Karen allowed me to see some pictures of the finished car and the renderings in which it was fashioned from at the Goodguys Heartland Nationals and I've got to say that this car has alot of creativity behind it. Roger Burman and the Lakeside crew have performed the magic metal work that was required flawlessly and the Leisingers have had quite a bit of input in this "SCAR" cars construction. I'm very much looking forward to seeing this car in person this upcoming weekend at the Ohio State fairgrounds. See you at the autocross.

I do believe we are shooting a full feature on this car at Columbus for CP :)
As for the Mopar.. I like Thrillbilly, and I get the air cleaner through the hood deal (given the name) but it just doesn't work for me.
Plus, it would made driving in wet weather a bit problematic..
The rest is very

Thanks for getting it with the air cleaner through the hood detail,Steve. Roger built this car to follow a theme and although it looks wrong to some,it looks right and follows the original concept. On another note,I would like to see Roger throw a set of slicks on this beast and run it down the strip. Would anyone like to guess what this Hot Rod would run ET and top end?

Looking forward to the unveiling also. The design is quite impressive but like most anything else that is new and somewhat revolutionary it took me awhile to see the brilliance of it all. But now I see it clearly, and knowing Roger and the Lakeside crew like I do, the metal work, paint and all other details will be masterfully accomplished. We are in the process of machining much of the one off billet components for this G machine including the Brockmeyer inspired gauge bezels,Scar script insignias and sculptured sill plates. We will be submitting pictures of these pieces when the time is right. Jeff Bertrand---J and B Microfinish
As promised here are the "Scar" detail photos of some of the work J and B Microfinish machined.

You win SMOY and you're worried about what I think? I did hate it at that point but it turned out very nice. I'm not a fan of the 2010 Camaro thus I'm not a big fan of the car still. I hope you don't think I'm attacking your craftsmanship? It's clearly very well done and the craftsmanship is top shelf. Also, I didn't put down teh top 5 due to not running the autocross. I didn't even have that info until now. I was simply saying it's a shame they won't get driven much. In the November edition of the Goodguys Gazette it also lists in its tech specs of the (scar) car that Corbeau is the seat manufacturer. It is possible that a misprint was made however. Karen could tell us for sure. She followed the build from the beginning and is very knowlegeable about all details of this build.

At first I didn't really liked it, but now it's kinda growing on me, the craftsmanship is awesome, the detailing level is awesome, the result looks nice, what I can't deny is that is totally different, so for me it's ok, I might like it better later. So far looks nice, me likes.

In the November edition of the Goodguys Gazette it also lists in its tech specs of the (scar) car that Corbeau is the seat manufacturer. It is possible that a misprint was made however. Karen could tell us for sure. She followed the build from the beginning and is very knowlegeable about all details of this build.
Hey billetman, They are the Corbeau Sport with added foam to the headrest and custom sewing to look like a lumbar seat. If you need more info on the seats, contact Dan Weber of Weber Custom Interiors in Alexandria, MN.
We looked for you in SEMA and Scottsdale, but I suppose Dave's got you working on that '71?

Hi Karen, How was your Thanksgiving? Hope you and your family had a great holiday. Anyway thanks for answering the question about the seats. As far as Sema and Scottsdale is concerned,I would have really liked to have been there, but duty was calling. I just completed Dave's trans mount for the '71 and will be shipping it on Monday. How was Sema and Scottsdale?

Billetman, has the build for the '70 Camaro started yet? I remember you stating that the builder for SCAR, (I forget the name), was also doing a '70 Camaro. That should be a killer car as well. I would love to see pictures of the build, if they have any.

Hey Tones, Rodger Burman at Lakeside Rods and Rides in IA built the car. They do unbelievable work, here's a link to their site http://lakesiderodsandrides.com/

Tones, The build has started, but I'm not at liberty to post any pictures. Karen will be posting some in the future. Stay tuned. This new 2nd gen. Camaro will be quite the g machine when completed. Roger and the crew at Lakeside are hard at work on it.

Okay so here we go again - yep another little rant by me myself & I..
This is how I see it and I will try to post it so maybe the owner, builder & vendors can see where I am going.
Let me use Scar as an example. First off let me see the car is over the top. However it has come and gone and in a few months no one will remember the car, the builder or the owner. Why, because of the lack of promotion and Hype (hello, just look at Apple and there product sucks). We live in a world where it's all about shameless self promotion and Hype. Something "Scar" never had. If you ask 10 people at Columbus or even Sema who built the car, who owns the car, who did the interior, what engine, what suspension, what wheels, bla bla bla - get my point. I am willing to bet most of the questions couldn't be answered. Why – No promotion.
After the cars debut we get a little teaser picture in a magazine promoting vintage air, wheel manufacture or one of it’s other sponsors. But I assure you that doesn't get much business for the vendor. We live in a world where shameless self promotion is what is needed. Once again look at Apple there Marketing is the sells there product.
There are builders on this site that get it, Best of Show, JCG Restoration, Ironwork, Fesler & finally the Ring Brothers. These guys promote there projects, parts and what they can do and guess what people spend money with these guys and there vendors. Why because people see there projects, remember there projects and the parts they use.
If your goal is to swoop and like and Eagle and disappear then wait till a few weeks before the debut and post some pictures we will all look at the car fall in love and move on just like we did with “Scar”. If you goal is to promote the car and have people remember the car, parts and all of the people involved then it's time to re-evaluate the reason why we have BB forum's or even websites promoting shops.
Perfect Example - Look at the Chicayne, G-Force Cuda and Reactor. People remember these cars and always will.

Well said Marty. I would agree with about 90 percent of what you said. Shameless self promotion definitely brings in customers to shops. There are builders on here who have gained a bunch of customers without ever finishing a car, let alone one that is of the caliber of Scar.
It doesn't really seem to me that Karen is on here to advertise for Roger Burman of Lakeside Rods, but rather to share the build with our little community due to a genuine love of all things Camaro. Still, it's not entirely clear. This build thread is a bit of a tease, and here is where I really start to agree with what you're saying Marty. I can understand keeping things secretive if a person is building a car over the course of several years or more, during which time their ideas could be stolen, but with a no expense spared car, built on a timeframe that is as quick as a shop can work, keeping things secretive doesn't appear to me to be as important. Now, it seems to me like Scar has gotten its fair share of press and ink. Seems every magazine I open has the car in it, and rightfully so, because it is an extraordinarily well built car. On the other hand, cars like mine, Josh's, and Todd's "Payback" (probably being the best example of what I'm trying to get at) are probably well known on this site, yet I doubt they are really known outside of the little pro-touring circle. So, while names like "Payback," "Karma" and "Motiv8or" which instantly spring to my mind, will forever be held up around these sites, "Scar" is out receiving its fifteen minutes of fame on a national level, and I think, by default, is bound to reach a much broader audience. I'm sure it will be forgotten, but most of our cars will never be known on a comparable level to begin with.
So, I guess at the end of my little post, what I'd like to know is pretty what Marty was curious about, are you (Karen) on here to promote, or rather to share for the sake of sharing?

Geez...Is this still a hobby? Just checking.
Why does Karen owe anyone an explanation?
Does everyone who contracts to have a car built, need to issue some kind disclaimer, whenever he/she mentions the builder?
Compared to past SMOTY winners, I don't even see where she has promoted the car all that much, or even that she posts very much on Lat-G...

I don't think she owes us an explanation, and it doesn't really matter, but I kind of would like to know.
I think I understand a bit about what Marty was getting at, and I think his message was a bit more genuine and friendly than it might have seemed. For me, it seemed like he was trying to be helpful. I mean, I don't think there is any problem with promoting a car, sharing, etc. He was just offering advice depending on her intentions.

Hey G members- we've built many camaros over the years having a passion for the car. We're not a vendor and it's not our business. Just a passion. We started going to Good Guys shows and had great times and met a lot of really cool people. We decided as a family to take it up a notch and build some high end camaros to show and compete. I (Karen) wanted to compete with others in the autocross so we built cars with that build. We are currently building a 70 camaro named "CRUSHER" and a 71 camaro named "The Professor". People have asked us on this forum to post the build, but we are wondering if we should or not. These cars are built with many of our ideas along with Eric Brockmeyer and Lakeside Rods. We want to keep the passion alive for our kids and the rest of the next generation.

Exactly it is just a hobby. Be glad they feel apart of our community enough to post somethings. Lots of really nice cars get built and never taken to a show. This hobby is about the cars not how much you can stroke you ego. Sure if Roger wanted to publicise his work more he could be he seems to be pretty busy building cars.

After meeting the Leisingers I don't see them as "attention mongers". Heck they brought Scar to Westpoint NE for a car show! How many people on here have even met Roger Burman? If you have you would know that "self promotion" and tooting his own horn is not his style at all! And I'll guarantee you he is just as busy as any of the other "top" builders...

I agree I have meet him. I even saw progress pics at Sema last year (2009). He was really excited about the car and the work that was being done. I think my point is that maybe the owner could do a little bit of promotion for the car.
