Hey guys! Well the time has come for me to take my 72 Chevelle to the shop. My shop guy told me he can get me into the shop in two weeks. So this is a little mini-build update on the install of my 408 stroker LS 6.0 & T56 Magnum. Here are a few shots of my parts so far. I still have to buy a few odds and ends, such as my clutch, rocker arms, etc. The heads are in the machine shop being ported, polished and assembled with Ferrea stainless steel valves and Comp Cams dual springs and titanium retainers. The pic of the motor is it still in the crate. Don't want to open it until assembly time to keep the crap out of it. Some of the parts in the pics include a Speartech harness, SLP double roller timing chain, a Quicktime bellhousing, Comp Cams hydraulic roller lifters, ARP fasteners and a GM conversion oil pan to clear the Chevelle cross member. Look and enjoy. :unibrow: :unibrow:

Will do. It's gonna be a few months process because I'm gonna shave the firewall while the motor is out and I have to modify the tranny tunnel. I'll update pics as I go.

I hope not, because that is what was recommended for a Chevelle or any other muscle car for that matter. We'll see.

Marcus,

I'm putting a T56 in my 442 clone as well after I get that rear end.
Cutting the hump seems to be the easiest way and then rewelding it back in place.
I love the build layout, it's lookin sweet. All those parts would make any man jealous.

I've put a 2004 GTO LS1 / 4L60e in my 78 Baldwin Motion themed Camaro.
It's a project to say the least.

Ace from Chicago.

Small update....
Went by the machine shop today and took a couple of pics of the heads. They are just roughed in right now. They are not polished yet. They should be finished and fully assembled by the end of the week. Hopefully, shortly after I get the heads back, I can get the engine to my engine guy and get it assembled.

Well guys, here's a quick update. Here are some pics of my baby on it's way to the shop to get it's transplant. The teardown has already begun. With the motor out I decided to go ahead and shave the firewall. Also, if you noticed I have Baers 6-piston, 15" Extreme kit on the front. While I'm at it, I'm going to go ahead and put the same 6-piston, 15" Extreme kit on the rear and put a 9" in place of the 12 bolt. I'll keep ya'll updated as I go along.:lateral: :woot:

Here are a few shots of the engine being test fitted with the T56 Magnum. Fabbing up the tranny tunnel. This is not my new motor. This is an extra LS 6.0 I have that is going to go into my '68 C10 when I get around to working on it. The 408 stroker is still in the crate waiting on me to get it assembled. I'll get around it to getting it over to the machine shop soon to get it assembled.

Funny -- I was designing this same tunnel "mod" around the TKO 600 in my buddies 55... But since it has an Art Morrison chassis -- and there's NO WAY to get the tranny out of the car without pulling the motor... I wanted to be able to "service" the shifter from the top.... so went with a "flat" piece that I can remove and be able to get the whole shift mechanism out. That and he already bought a "factory" precut carpet...

Looks good! Nice work!

I found this color in the paint book at English color. It took me several trips and several paint sprays to see if I liked it. IMO, picking a paint color is the hardest thing to do on a resto. But anyway, this is an original GM paint code from 1990. It's called Blue Metallic I think. Thanks!

Hey Marcus,

I'm just curious about how they made that shifter center section ??
Did they fab it up to a specific template or sizing like that for a reason??
I've seen other guys do a squared hump on the center tunnel.

I'm just askin cuz I gotta do my 442's T56 install and I have to do tunnel mods as well.
BTW you live in pretty damn nice neighborhood judging by the other houses. :hail:

Ace, they asked me if liked squared or round. No specific reason really. I just thought just like you said, most people do squared so I thought I would try round to go with the whole driveline theme you know. I mean, the tranny is sort of round, as well as the driveshaft is round, so why not contour the floor the same as the driveline, huh? As far as tunneling it as far back as I did, I did that for space of the driveshaft because with the four-corner coilovers my car is lower than normal ride height so that allowed me more space for the driveshaft to travel up & down while hitting bumps and stuff when driving. Otherwise it was too cloor to the floorboard. As far as the neighborhood goes, I like it. It's kind of outside of the city limits which is more quiet and serene.:woot:

Jim @ Killer Ridez does my work. He's a great guy and really knows his stuff. I also have '68 C10 swb at his shop that he is working on for me too. I live in the far east part of Mequite. Where are you? Here are a few shots of the C10 he's doing for me. It will have front & rear Corvette suspension, Dana 44 IRS and shockwaves on all for corners with a 6.0 LS & T56 Magnum as well. Build thread will start sometime next year although I'm working on it now little by little. These pics are of the stock crossmember removed and the Corvette crossmember being fabbed & fitted:thumbsup:

A small update guys and the little brown delivery truck dropped my Currie 9" rear end off too. My shop guy is just finishing up the fire wall and a little setback on the tranny tunnel. After I posted some pics of the tranny tunnel getting fabbed up, fellow boardmember GregWeld made a good point that I overlooked. I forgot to make a provision to access the tranny shifter. Therefore, the shop had to go back and make a way to access the shifter for future service. Otherwise, I would have had to drop the tranny just to access the shifter.:thmbsdwn: :thmbsdwn: Thanks GregWeld for bringing that to my attention.:hail: :hail:

Pics of the new rear end. Out with the 12-bolt and in with the 9". It is a Currie 9" with Torino housing ends and 31 spline axles. I'm ordering an aluminum center section from Strange. It should be here next week along with the rear 15" Baer brakes. I'm debating if I should paint the rear end to where it matches my paint code exactly or powdercoat it to the closest color of blue to my paint I can find. Powdercoating will be more study and resistant to chips and certain oils.

Alright guys, I'm not gonna be up and running as soon as I thought. I have decided to powdercoat my frame. I mean, hey, since the rear end was already out and the motor and front clip was off, all was left was the front suspension and four body mounts were left to take off. So why not, huh? The frame was powdercoated black about 7 years ago and I thought I would freshen it up and change the color to graphite grey. Also, some parts showed up yesterday too. But, as they say, "What can go wrong, will go wrong." :censored: I got my Strange center section in and upon taking it out the box to admire it's beauty I noticed the pinion yoke bent and chipped as if it had been dropped. I immediately called the company and took some pics of it and emailed it to them. They said they will mail me out a yoke overnight, ASAP. My Baer 15" brakes showed up too. I know, I know, I don't need 15" rotors on the rear. I figured since I had 15" on the front, I might as well show off and put 15" on the rear. LOL!! :woot:

Got the frame back today. The firewall is getting body worked and blocked. Also decided to shave the cowl too. What was supposed to be just an LS 6.0 & T56 Magnum upgrade is beginning to spiral out of control.:unibrow: Allow me to explain.:pushbutto I have since taken the body off of the frame and powdercoated it and replaced the 12 bolt with a Currie 9" with a Strange center section. Now I have decided to go ahead and shave the drip rails, flush mount the front and rear glass to give it a more modern day look and get rid of the stock molding and then repaint the whole car, same color of course. I also am getting a '59 Impala dash custom fitted into it with a custom console too. I'm also waiting on some goodies to come in the mail. They should be here next week. That's all for now!:willy:

Wassup guys, just a quick update. Project has been moving a bit slower. Well...I had to slow it down some. I've been spending money like crazy. LOL!! Anyway, the frame is being reassembled and I dropped the rear end off at the powdercoat shop today. Did some small changes to the 9". As you can see, for a cleaner look I had my shop guy take off the spring perches since I have coilovers in the rear. He also added a tow tab next to the lower trailing arm mount just in case I ever have to get it towed. Also, the shop has began to do some light blocking to the car to fix the small dings. Since I will be going with the same color and the car was taken to metal the first time I built the car, we will only do light blocking and rough up the paint with a soft grit then reshoot it and clear it. Of course, wet sand and buff it until it shines like new nickel. Besides, I drive the hell out of it. There's no way I would put a $10k paint job on it if someone else paid for it. That's all for now.

As far as the wheels go, I'm sending them back to HRE to get them brushed and clear coated and the fronts widened to 9.5" or 10" and the rears widened from an 11" to a 13" to run a 345/30/20. I'm also getting a custom frame made with Rick's new Vapor Worx stainless tank. Been talking to Carl Casanova about the tank and getting the proper wiring harness made for it. I got a few other surprises too, but they are in the developmental stages right now. So, I'll have to see before I open my big mouth. :unibrow:

Got the '59 Impala dash tacked in. All the knob holes, glove box and stuff have been deleted and shaved and it has been fabbed for my double-din radio. You can also see where it has been notched out so you can read the vin#. Also shaved the rear quarter, marker lights too. Like I said, not much to see...so that's all for know.

Chassis is coming along fine Ron. Just waiting on the builder to send me some pics. Frame is built with everything tacked in. Just test fitting a bunch of stuff for the rear. I'm dying on waiting for the pics myself. You know as soon as I get them, they will be uploaded to the site.

Bought a few parts...some carbon fiber from Anvil and a pair of NOS bumpers. I was gonna tuck the old bumpers, but after finding these and the price I paid for them, there's no way I can bring myself to cut them. Some of you older guys may remember the protective, blue gel coating that GM used to put on their bumpers.

Okay, now for the big surprise. Good news and bad news. The bad news first. Well, my project will be put on hold for about 2-3 months. But, the good news is I'm getting a garage built for all of my toys. It's not a big elaborate shop with super, mega welders or ultra powerful compressors like some you guys have. It's just a Christmas gift to myself. It will have nice shelves in it and a big commercial two-sided sink though. They got underway on it last week. It will be 26'x32'.

Ok guys, I need some help badly on making a decision. I'm about to send my wheels back to HRE today. They are boxed up and everything. The only thing I'm torn between is deciding on the finish. I'm having trouble deciding between 3 finishes. I can tell you, the black center is OUT of the question. I don't care if it is satin black or gloss black...the answer is still no. I actually don't mind it on other peoples cars, but I'm too thru with the blacked-out wheel look. No offense to those who have them, it's just not for me. Don't care for the polished hoops either because when they get dirty and a bit older the hoops get hazey and it's hell trying to polish them back to a high luster shine. Anyway, I did a vote about a year ago when I decided to change my wheels and didn't want to update an old poll. So, I figured I would just ask in my thread. The 3 choices are as follows.....

1) Brushed clear center with chrome hoops and leave the bumpers chromed. (I know how chrome is becoming less popular)

2) Brushed and tinted clear with brushed clear hoops and brushed bumpers. (My #1 choice)

3) Brushed/clear center with brushed clear hoops with brushed bumpers. (Less dimension if whole wheel is brushed clear)

Basically, as you can see, I'm torn on the hoops. The centers will be brushed no matter what, rather tinted or clear. I've included a pic of what HRE's brushed tinted clear looks like versus their brushed clear.

Brushed/cleared
http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l536/2quedogg/72%20Chevelle/brush.jpg

The next two are brushed /tinted clear (adds a little dimension to the wheel)

http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l536/2quedogg/72%20Chevelle/tint2.jpg

Lastly, here are a few shots of my wheels before I make a decision on the new finish. The are full chrome...maaaan, WTF was I thinking.  They are dirty as hell from being in storage.

Thanks Greg and Greg. LOL!! That's why I said that tinted clear was my #1 choice. You can still see the brushed finish through it. HRE must use some sort of transparent color in a clear powder, I guess. But, I would do that with the regular brushed and cleared hoops. What y'all think?

Deff. Keep the lips chrome, I hate full brushed wheels they need to diffent colors to create demension to the wheel. You can't go wrong with brushed tinted or regular brushed centers on you bright colored car.

Guys, but what about the hoops? I'm 99% sold on the tinted clear, but it's the hoops I'm indecisive about. Like I said, the polished hoops will look like crap in a years time. I know I can have them high polished with a machine by a shop to return the new luster to them, but that's too much trouble. I also, know I can "so call" do the polishing myself, but again, that's too much trouble and definately too much arm/hand work and then it still won't be that shiny. Chrome is a low maintenance deal. Soap them up, rinse them off and there you have it. Plus, if I keep the bumpers chrome, there has to be a little bit of chrome somewhere else. Wouldn't y'all agree? And the thing with the chrome bumpers is, as I pictured earlier in my thread...I found front and rear NOS bumpers which I spent alot of money on and may need to remain chrome by me leaving them alone. Wouldn't y'all further agree? It's funny to me how guys rant and rave and make fun of chrome hoops on wheels and they have two big ole front and rear chrome bumpers and chrome trim pieces themselves on a car that's supposed to be totally blacked out.

Thanks Tone. I tracked my wheels on line and they won't get to HRE until Feb. 29th. Bout time they get the wheels in and break them down, send them off to get the chrome stripped off, get them back and brush the centers I guess I'll have my mind made up. LOL!! I'm going with the brushed/tinted clear centers and I'm leaning towards the chrome hoops to match the chrome bumpers.:_paranoid

Wheel Update....

Well, I got my quote from HRE yesterday and I was quoted $2200 for all of the work. Of course this sent me over the top. So, I called them today and had a man-to-man or shall I say customer-to-manufacturer talk. After much debate I got the charges reduced to $1600. Still a hell of alot of money, but alot cheaper considering they have to strip off the chrome and then brush the centers and powdercoat them. Believe it or not, I somehow got them to strip off the chrome for free. That saved me alot of money considering they have to send the wheels out and outsource that part of the process. There was no dealing on the labor to brush them. Lol!! So, of the $1600, most of that is the labor to brush them and the cost of the 7" outer hoops for the rear to make them 13" wide. The 7" outers had to be custom ordered as they don't keep them in stock due to not many people requesting a 20" wheel with a 7" outer hoop. I hated to use the old "I'm a repeat customer trick", but I had to use one of my trump cards and tell him I just bought a set of 22" 948R wheels for my 68 C10 shortbed last year. I told him the 22's plus the 20's for my Chevelle should speak volumes about me as a customer. So, after I gave him the serial numbers to verify my 22's, he gave me a much better deal. Here are a couple of pics of my 22's for my C10. No build thread yet until I finish the Chevelle. Got alot of neat stuff for the truck though, but I won't spoil it yet. By the way guys, I chose to go with the brushed/tinted clear centers with chrome hoops.

No big update guys, but I do need some help if someone knows a line on a good deal of Michelin Pilot Super Sports. 345/30/20 rears and 265/30/20 fronts. Vince at HRE sent me a pic of my wheels. He said the are finished with them and should ship out by the end of this week. Here's the dilemma though...he said with the rear wheel being a 20x13 and as wide as it is, I better make sure whoever mounts it knows what they are doing. Basically, make sure that they don't bust the silicone bead on the center of the two rim halves trying to mount a tire that wide. Now, he did offer to mount and balance the tires for me for free if I sent them to him. What a guy huh? So, before I have Tirerack drop ship them to HRE, I figured I'd ask if anyone knows a good deal on some. Those dog gone tires are higher than giraffe booty. I included a few previously posted pics of the rims before I sent them back to be refinished in brushed and tinted clear. Let me know what you guys think...good or bad. I know some of you guys already hate the chrome lip.

Just to clarify, alot of guys have been asking about the frame and why it's taking my builder so long. Trust and believe, it's not him. It's me and the money flow. He's being very patient with me, which I am very appreciative for. Getting the garage built slowed me down and also, here are two pics of the biggest reason.

My 3 1/2 month old son. We welcomed him 1-12-12. Been paying hospital and doctor bills since that day. The second pic is him playing Words With Friends on the iPad. Well, he drooled on it more than anything. LOL!!

Thanks guys!! I'll be ordering the front's Friday from Matt's Classic Bowtie's. I'm telling you guys, if you haven't ordered anything from Matt's yet, you might outta try them out. The gave me a killer quote on the front I couldn't resist. The only reason I didn't order this rear kit from them is because I already had the Red color from Jeg's to fit a 9" before I went IRS and sent them back for an exchange. But, Matt even quoted me a better deal than Jeg's on the rear. I have the red color 6-piston 6S, 15" fronts for a C5/C6 application I'm going to be putting up for sale as soon as I can get some pics. I was running these with my ATS spindles. It is barely used with less than 500 miles on them. I just changed to the blue kit since my car was is blue and alot of people have red and I wanted something different.

Talked to my frame guy today and everything is finished. IRS is complete. He's having one last problem with the rack-and-pinion. He said, because of the billet drop spindles, he's having some difficulties lining up the steering arms with the splines on the rack-and-pinion. They hang to low and are hitting the inside of the wheels. :( :( He said he just about has it figured out and he'll be done.

No sweat Brother. Send me a pic of the set up when you get a chance?

In addition to the pan fitting, also make sure he puts a bumpsteer gauge on the car before he sends it to you. He could make the arms fit, yet the car could do funny things during spirited driving. He does race car fab, so he'll know...

Thanks guys, I'm happy with it. It's been a long time coming. This was my frame builders first time doing an IRS, so alot of R & D went into it. Alot of going back to the drawing board, etc. At times, some things looked good on paper, but when he cut it out on the machine and mocked it up, it was a no-go. Lots of trying to make things work on the computer program he used, as far as, suspension travel and movement of the parts, wheels turning, etc. After all of that and about a year and a half later...here we are. We are waiting on the Ridetech triple adjustable coilovers to come in hopefully sometime next week. One last shot, a pic of the IRS cradle.

Rob, still debating on which way I'm going...supercharged or N/A. I'm just gonna do some work on the car for a while and then decide on a motor a little later. I'm going to think on it long and hard because I'm tired of "buying today, selling tomorrow" because I want something else. So, this time I'm going to be patient and make a good decision.

The rear axles came in from Dutchman. Got them installed and they fit perfect.

Also, as a few of you all may know, I sold my 408 LS 6.0 a couple of months ago to another board member. Going a different route with my powerplant. So, I guess I have to change my signature, huh? Here's a sneak peek of what's up my sleeve. (sorry for the cell phone pic...my little, cheap digital camera is acting up.)

Hahahahah!! I figured if I'm gonna do it, I'd better do it right...I guess.

....Marcus you are going all in with his build that is a fact.:omg:

Rob, 10 years ago I didn't build the car right the first time due to my inexperience, knowledge, etc. So, I figured it time for it's due justice/diligence.

Dutchman is up in my neighborhood - a well respected company for sure and that rear end look sweet.

What's going under the air swirler?

Hahahahhaha!! The pic of the rear axle installed is from my builders iPad Greg. That's how he always sends them to me. He's old school and emails them straight from his iPad. I guess he can't figure out how to take pics from a camera then download them to a computer, then upload them and then email them. LOL!! I take full resposibility for my blob of a picture on the supercharger. :lmao: I have a littler cheapo digital camera that uses 2 AA batteries and the batteries were weak and it was acting up. Even thought about robbing some from my cable and TV remote, but they were AAA. But, as promised...I will overload you guys with pics once I pic up the frame. The supercharger is a 3.6 liquid cooled Kenne Bell. As far as the engine going under it, it'll be an RHS block 427 with piston oil squirters installed and All Pro heads.

Thanks Tmadden! You're closer to being finshed than I am. But, we're gonna have to roll when I get finshed. How's the interior coming?

Car is at Musclerodz getting needed corrections and more work. Looking forward to seeing it close to done. I'm working with Mike to find a interior solution. I'm torn between the Fesler door panels and doing the Deluxe interior kit.

I bought the Fesler kit for my Chevelle. I pleased with the quality of it. I bought them about a year ago. No where near ready to tdo the interior, but Fesler was running a sale I couldn't pass up. LOL!!
