I'm terrible about taking pictures and documenting progress, however I have vowed to begin doing it, thus here is my first "documented" update. Was able to put the ATS spindles and Baer brakes on this weekend. Have a few things to tie up to finish it off (align, clean up, etc) Rear suspension is next project, then rear brakes (as long as nothing else falls off before then).
Old versus new

LOL---here's a good one---one of the motor cycle officers saw me mid-drift in a full four wheel slide at the same "track" last week---he stopped at the side of the road and held up his hands like---"Dude, seriously?"---I waved him over--he motioned to his radio and sped off---as did I as soon as he cleared my vision.

I gotta say Steve, it was one of the reasons for going with these brakes--ease of getting pads--and lots of options when choosing. When your pump went bad at the shootout, it was great that you could drive into town and just pick another one up---that left an impression on me--especially since this one is for driving to work--auto x and track days.

I have to say that I really agree with the Theory of Rupp! Use as many OE parts as possible!
As you mentioned Doug, Steve's water pump is a perfect example of why this is so important for a car that gets used!!

Agreed. All of the same reasons i am using the Z06 brakes and as many other stock parts as possible. I have learned a lot from watching all of these projects come together here as well as the finished ones getting dialed in and abused too. (Todd:lol: )

I gain more respect for GM everyday. There is something to be said for the reliability and availability of GM parts. That's the beauty on an LSX motor, stock syle pumps, and corvette brakes. With that being said, every car has so many custom touches that it doesn't take much to end your day. After all I broke a stock GM power steering pump at Spring Mountain as well. In fact, it's the same type 2 pump Steve broke at the Optima Challenge. I know his was a turn one already that had seen better days. Not all stock parts are engineered to be pushed to the level some of us are looking for either. I've already made the bed I lay in and you won't see me running the one lap of america. :rofl: At the end of the day, your only as good as the sum of your parts.

If you got arrested - you'd call a "friend" to bail you out... Babs, on the other hand... would be sitting on the bench with you saying "OMG - wasn't that fun!!" "Babs" DNA is from the shallow end of the gene pool... and I'm right there with him.

Since I can't find the original thread, I'll start another one here. I'm really bad at doing updates even though I enjoy reading and seeing them on all the other members cars. This takes way too much time to do, and my pictures will show that.
So, the most recent update is the new trans for the car. I've ended up with a Bowler's 400 and a Gear Vendors. Keeping with my theme of doing one improvement at a time, shopping and waiting for the best deal and not having the car down for months on end, I will fill in a bit of that info here. This trans (including the torque converter) has less than a thousand miles on it (street miles), and same for the Gear Vendors. I was able to purchase the entire setup with the electronics for $2,000. The purchase was made from a member here who is local to me, so no shipping. Since I still needed a crossmember, I posted another "Wanted Add" here and Scott Mock sent me the necessary crossmember for only the cost of the shipping. Thanks again Scott!! The whole process has taken me about 2 weeks thus far working on the car off and on--in my garage on the floor.
I've fought a vibration in the car at speeds over 50 or so--especially as you went past that speed. I had hoped that through the trans swap process I would figure out what the problem was, sure enough as I pulled the old TH350 out, the flywheel is not the correct one for a 400 block SBC---there's no weight on it. Many thanks to the previous installer. So I ordered up the correct one and hope that it will solve that issue--I don't see how it could hurt it now. I just wonder how long the rear main bearing will last after beating it for the last 7,000 miles without the correct flywheel. Here's the new setup.
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu50/dfresh69/ThanksgivingandChristmas2010002.jpg
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu50/dfresh69/ThanksgivingandChristmas2010001.jpg
Also, I have a brand new Fab9 rear end housing with back brace already installed. I was in need of a third member for it so I posted up a "Wanted Add" once again here and under PT. Once again, a member contacted me with what I consider to be another great deal. A Moser alluminum through bolt case with a detroit locker, billit pinion support all setup by Moser complete with less than a thousand miles on it, for $750. The Fab9 housing was a bit of a fire sale for the guy I purchased from at $400. He was not a member here, but part of a drag racing circle that I belong to out here on West Coast. Here's a couple pics of the third member;
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu50/dfresh69/ThanksgivingandChristmas2010005.jpg
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu50/dfresh69/ThanksgivingandChristmas2010006.jpg
Lastly, I have a new power plant for the car as well. One of the members here was interested in a full tilt 406 motor I had awaiting transplant into the Camaro. He had a brand new crate LS3 that was going to require even more fab work to get into his already rushed project. A deal was made and I now have the LS3. I will now be in the process of putting the parts together to swap over to the LS platform. Here's a pic of it as well.
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu50/dfresh69/ThanksgivingandChristmas2010.jpg
So, the plan currently looks like this; get the trans swap completed by end of next week. Run the car as much as possible this next month to refine what I need to and make sure everything works the way it ought to. I'll need to learn how to drive the car again I would imagine for Auto X'ing and Road Course with the new trans setup. If this all works out, then I will try to get the new rear end in the car before the RTTC event, but that may not happen and I won't jeapordize not making the event just to put the new rear end in the car. The original plan was to have it under the car by that time, but the trans deal came up and was too good to pass on and it fit into the master plan. I really need that overdrive, and I like the fact that it's a TH400 since they are what i am used to working on in the race car, and I know it will handle whatever power I will put too it. So, I will most likely run an event with my famous "One Off Baer Self Energizing Rear Drum Brakes", but I will still be there running the event none the less. I'll purchase more "Disc Brake Spray" from Ironworks just before the event.

In a hobby that can often be rediculously expensive, it's great to see stories like this and be reminded that shopping around and remaining patient can save big bucks. You've always been wicked quick with that one-legger on the AutoX and it seems you'll only be getting quicker with the bonus of being able to cruise on the highway(more events!). Congrats on your progress Doug and Happy New Year! Hopefully I can stop by and check out all the goods! :thumbsup:

You sure that's not an internally balanced engine? If the damper is neutral balanced then the flywheel should be also. The 406 in the Camaro previously was set up this way.

Nice updates Doug, are you changing suspension with the rear end swap? How did you get the name Apollo 13 ??
Looks like I will be, yes. The plan, currently, is to update with the more modern version of the G-Link with the integrated sway bar. Since I have a new housing, I will weld on the Alston brackets that come with their setup---as if I ordered the rear from them--so no leaf spring pads. Then it will most likely get the new Baer Floater setup and finish it off with the new rear brakes to tie in to the fronts. I'm skepticle about getting it all done before the RTTC event. We'll see what happens.
The name for the car came while I was in the garage one night, late, and fighting to get the front LCA's into the car (bolt on--u know how a lot of these stories go). I had the movie "Apollo 13" on and just as I was reaching my point of complete physical and mental exhaustion laying under the car, there was a part in the movie where in order for them to stay alive on the busted up ship--floating in space with no power--they had to jam some square breathing filters into a setup made for round ones. They had to use all kinds of duct tape, plastic bags, etc. to make it all work. I felt the pain and could identify--LOL. So, that's how it came to be. Seems like the car fights me with just about every bolt on.

I had quite a few text messages asking if these latest mods were for the race car (Green 69) or the street car--Many of you know I have toyed with the idea of making the drag radial car into a PT extreme car--whatever that is-something like Project Unfair. All of these mods are for the following street car shown below;

Sorry for the confusion---both cars share the same garage and the Green 69 drag radial car got in the pics based on proximity (aka lack of space).

Almost everything is installed now for the trans and gear vendors--put the switch in and the electronics. Some final clean up with respect to the wire routing and I should be ready in the next day or two. I decided to mount the switch on the console and the electronics under the console. It's very easy to get to the electronics side of it when necessary and this is the cleanest place for it in my car. Since the dash will be changing in the car, it will be one less item to have to remount and rewire when the time comes.

Why, yes, yes it is. A "Balanced Budget" is just that---gives no indication of the "Amount" of said budget, nor the plan of it---and, in the end, it really is---only a "Budget"--which is just a number you aim for. You see Greg, it's like stock, one day you're average, one year later your rolling phat and you just weren't planning on that--just hoping. It can happen to you my friend--In fact, i've seen it happen to you---lol.

Been there brother. I can say from your story that I truely "get" the name. Perfect for where you were at and where a good number of us have been (still are?). Looking forward to seeing the car at RTTC.
G.

I had quite a few text messages asking if these latest mods were for the race car (Green 69) or the street car--Many of you know I have toyed with the idea of making the drag radial car into a PT extreme car--whatever that is-something like Project Unfair. All of these mods are for the following street car shown below;
Sorry for the confusion---both cars share the same garage and the Green 69 drag radial car got in the pics based on proximity (aka lack of space).

The console is out of a 2004 Trans Am. Got the complete setup minus the E-Brake handle and assembly on Ebay for $50.00. (Tony ended up sending me an ebrake setup for this console for free that he wasn't going to use--thanks again Tony!) It fit in the car with no mods to it. So, I got the car running----but, per usual a few things came up during the trans/gear vendors install. First, when I fired the car back up for the first time, it had a wicked exhaust leak. So, swap header gaskets, check the collectors, and it's still doing the wicked -tick-tick-tick thing. I don't know about anyone else here, but I will loose sleep over something like that--it drives me insane. Finally pull the freaking header off and guess what, cracked where the tube goes through the flange. Still trying to figure out how swapping the trans induced this complete annoyance. Two days later and that was repaired and back together. Bought the flexible dipstick--had too with the half inch high body mounts--nothing else would fit in the car---get it installed and the stinking dip stick won't push all the way down in the pan. Try, try, try and finally the pan comes off to grind the edge for the clearance needed to clear the dipstick. Get that done, then the jack decides it won't work anymore. So, another floor jack gets the car down and today I took it for a spin. It's a pretty cool setup---I seem to have the best luck just driving it in the "Auto Mode" and it goes through all 6 speeds. The only bummer is the new converter---it has about a 2200 stall---this turd motor that is in the car now is so very gutless, it actually took away the only acceleration it had--so, I am more anxious to get the LS3 in the car now. I will say, I was doing 120 in the car in OD and I don't think it was much over 3 g's---with that 3.08 gear and the 28 inch tall tire---come to think of it--that's not helping the car accelerate either is it. So--I like the setup---very nice on the freeway--car is quieter due to lower RPM's and everything seems to be working well. Next step, get the new rearend in the car. I'll be stepping the gear up---to a 3.23 I believe----crazy I know. See you boys at RTTC in about 3 weeks.

Good to hear Doug!
You know - because you been doing this stuff long enough - but I'll say it anyway because lots of folks read this threads - and some don't know - the effect those 28" tall tires have on the final gearing. The 3:08 is probably more like a 2:97 or so with that tall of a tire.
I was really laughing about the "pig motor" comment.... and then you do the combo - higher stall converter - tall tires - 3:08 gear.... yeah -- it'd be a pig. But that 120 on the freeway at 3000 rpms says it all.
I had a brand new set of headers leak once - locally built here by a super good header shop - had 'em ceramic coated - installed - and the dreaded tick tick tick... took me about a week to find it -- the "star" where the four tubes come together at the collector was leaking! You can't get in there to fix that without whacking the collector off. Lucky - the shop took it back and gave me a new one and even stood up for the coating. I buy all my headers from them! That's just good business!

Well, I'll have some pics up--as painful as it is for me to do that---nothing major--I did get the OD working and the gas tank leak fixed from RTTC. The cork gasket around the top of the sending unit was the culprit on the tank. Obviously the vented gas cap ain't doing it's job. Spoke with John Parsons (II Much Fabrication) about his vent canister he offers. Got the plumbing setup for the vent (ran the line from the tank up into the trunk via bulkhead ---just waiting on the vent canister from JP. I know Todd runs a similar setup in his and has said it works great--no gas smell in the garage--which is beginning to wear me down. I'll click off some pics of the install---I know a couple guys here run JP's setup (Rupp and Shipka) and both have said it works great. Trying to get John to make a kit for those of us who run these tanks (Ricks and others) which would include the KN filter, and other misc items.
Other than that, got the parts coming from DSE to put back on the subframe--they will be here on Thursday--I will reassmble the sub with the new parts (upper control arm, new spindle and misc stufff) and then determine what I will do next. Most likely it will be the rearend---get the FAB 9 rear under the car with the third member I have for it---need to buy axles and brakes---working on getting the new Baer floater setup to avoid any knock back crap--but it's all spendy---1600 for the floater I believe--2000 for the brakes, another 350 for axles, probably another 500 to install floater, misc---blah, blah, blah---etc. So, you know me, watching for deals on such items--but how often do rear 14in Baer Pro Plus brakes show up?---haven't seen it yet. The LS3 is still sitting, have cam and springs for it to put in---
I bought the movie "Taladega Nights" and watched it today. Shake and Bake--LOL.

OK guys, I see I started something here so I'm gonna make it right. I had a lab do a quantatuve analysis of the German Bakersfield Co gap spray and then sent it off to China to be made. I was going to do an official product launch later this year but I see now my business plan has some momenetum so I tell you what I'm gonna do: Y'all ppal me $500 ea. I need to get 50 of you to do it to get this killer deal. We'll get our own group buy going and save about 3% off retail, plus it'll get to the market that much sooner. This is a one time deal so don't hesitate!
Oh, and no going all jihad on me on the internet if it doesn't show up for a year. You guys know how slow those ships are on the water...:captain:

I love the stance with the weld aluma's and the mini tub. When i had my 69 i had it like your current black with white stripes 69. Now i have a new 69 and im deciding what color to go with. Thought some of you might want to see this car come back together. I got the fuel pump back today after a rebuild. This is a two stage FI pump. The pressure is adjusted on the returns, and it's set for 130 PSI and then adjusted down at the regulator before it hits the 160pd injectors---the return line off the regulator sends everything else back to the fuel cell. I thought about converting to a mechanical pump, but that would be more fabrication and I want to get it running and do some testing as it sits before I do anything else. The goal with the car is to go 7's. We'll see. I will do the install tomorrow and click a few more pics. I know it's not PT, but there are a few HP junkies and a few fellow drag racers here. The PT car is making progress, but I have a goal of getting this car running this year and it's already August, so i've been working on it in between the moments I have. I figure if I put updates here it will help keep me accountable and motivated.

So, in preparation for the upcoming RTTC in two weeks (first weekend of October) I decided to slip in a posi since I had one sitting here---well, it worked fine all last week--until today---there was a horrible noise coming from the LR side when making a turn, followed by a now constant poping sound when turning (no, it's not a locker). So, into the garage it goes today to investigate. I jack it up--check the rear suspension, then let the car back down---well--I did that a bit to quick and the highest part of the floor jack pushes in the gas tank as they collide. All in all a great day at the Renner household.
So, I am now stopping work on the racecar and will focus all funds and time on this pile. I knew this car would be jealous that I was touching the other one. So the plan is to get my new Speedtech Chicayne rear and torque arm in the car. In order to swap this rear into the car I still need the following;
Run brake lines on rearend (Fab 53--Ron's car will have to wait some more)
Powdercoat the new rearend and torque arm (Local)
Baer 14 in Pro Plus rears (Speedtech)
II Much vent for rearend
Other stuff that will cost more than I think
Things I have in inventory already:
Spreedtech Chicayne Rear
Speedtech Torque arm setup (upgraded with Ridetech shocks)
DSE brake booster (necessary for new rear disc setup)
Third Member (Moser Alumininum Thru bolt 9 inch)
Will get some pics up of these parts soon. Install and timing coming.
I'm still mostly upset about the damage to the gas tank---wondering if I can push the dent out if I drop it out of the car.

Just get a suction cup -- like they use for installing windshields - or at body shops for pulling dents out.... It'll pop right back into place - but WILL be stretched so will never be the same without shrinking it etc. Think oil can...

I like this plan. It makes me proud. Someone always needs to be the last minute guy that keeps everyone entertained, providing suspense. "Is he going to make it? is He?" I'm glad you stepped up to the plate. Should things not go as planned, (haha, I said "should," instead of when) let me know if I can help. I also offer great rates on a back up rental car, should you need one. It has an automatic transmission, not much power and a good "patina" going on the roof. It also has a trunk full of spare parts. The car is a Ford, and very reliable, and the extra parts are just in case you want to be like everyone else and change things out trackside so that you can make yourself feel faster.
Seriously though. If you need a hand, I would be happy to help. I could also use some practice work on stainless lines before I have to do them on my own car. :lol:

In all honesty, I have had enough thrashing on the purple car to last me, if not a life time, certainly more than a few years. Something always goes wrong with that car at the last minute. We had to fight to get to SEMA two years in a row, and it has always been new and unsorted at every RTTC event it has been to. Last year I drove off track in the middle of the straightaway because I got distracted watching my oil pressure read a frighteningly low number. I think I should have won an award for that one. This year I am just going to slap tires on the Mustang and go have fun.

So, as a hailmary, I went ahead and popped the cover on the rearend, dropped the pin and slid the axles out to check the axle bearings---i'm suspicious since it seems that the noise is isolated to this side of the car--it's a fairly cheap swap---it's the only thing on this 8.5 ten bolt I haven't replaced--everything else is brand new. My buddy John is coming by tomorrow night with the bearings and seals, and the all important slide hammer to extract the bearings. Would still like to make the RTTC event in two weeks. Even if this fixes it, I'll still move forward with the new setup in order to be able to test it at RTTC in March. The smell of gear oil is almost as bad as it was a couple of weeks ago when we put the posi in.
Hoping for a quick and easy fix. LOL. I'm reminded of why I named my car A13. Just before the lunar module was going to break into the earths atmosphere, a guy in mission control calls the flight commander and lets him know that there is a possible typhoon warning right where the module was going to land in the ocean--he says "There's a chance it won't turn into anything" to which the flight commander responds "Only if their luck changes".

All joking aside -- NICE WORK BRETT....
I was wondering what jack you used to get under Apollo? Or if you had a pit in the shop?
I've also found that if you have a dented (caved in) fuel tank... that a simple torch held near the opening... will help expand the fuel/air mixture contained therein... and the opening that will create - will allow you access with hammer and dolly.

Chris, I will need some ballast on the Auto Cross in the passenger seat--and you are right about the tank---it clears the jack nicely now.
Looking forward to seeing you there on Sat bro--

It's going to be strange without you Todd and Rich. I will be saving almost 2k on food purchases and Bud Light though. :lol:

Hard to tell from the pic. But it looks like you have a 8.5 rear? We have or at least had an open carrier at work I could get down to you. And if it's a 12 bolt, my bud has an open carrier down in Huntington Beach. Let me know

I can think of a special, and very exclusive club just for you Gregg.
Doug, since you were registered, and ready to go, can I interest you in the "rental car?" Yancy had it last year, and I told him he was free to take it out on the track if he wanted. It has 250whp of goodness and an automatic transmission. It doesn't handle very well, but it is more power than you're used to, so it could be fun!

Guys, wanted to let you know I seem to be past the worst of my physical crap and it looks like I am going to live. I won't bore you with any of those details other than to say it sucked---but I am glad to be alive and back in the game. I recently took several of my parts stash over to Brett at Fab 53 to get back on the car and start getting some of my accumulated parts actually put in the car. It's good to be back on Lat G---looking forward to seeing many of you guys at the SEMA Lat G party. Below is Brett's update thus far;
This Just in Renner is Alive and Well. The Green Machine is running and a chapter has been closed in the Apollo 13 project. Yes a meeting was conducted and the memo has been sent out.... Apollo 13 is the new "Stance" project. Why you ask? Well frankly, the name Apollo was only adding to the frustration Dr Renner was having with, what seamed like every little project for his 69 Camaro, when ever he worked on her.
So, Now... with a few things taken care of in Dr Renners life, He is back at it again. Missing the friendship and competition of being out with... "Stance", The SpeedTech Torque Arm project is getting ready to unfold. I have been asked to keep you informed and show pictures of this process of installing one of the markets best Torque Arm rear end suspension. What will make this story different is that "Stance" is low... like real low compared to most 69 Camaros. And Dr Renner has asked to keep the "Stance".
This project is for a SpeedTech rear Torque Arm installation with Baer brakes and a few other modifications to keep it's existing super low stance. As a matter of fact... The owner of this car has renamed the project "Stance" and I will be posting a more detailed how-to write up in the near future.

I know a lot of guys didn't know----it snuck up on me and by the time it was full blown we weren't sure what was going to happen, so I stayed quiet for the most part---glad it looks like the worst is behind me. Everyday is a gift now--for me---that's part of the good that has come from it. Corey--thanks bro. Have a lot more parts, but just not enough yet to put in the DSE sub and LS3. Still need the Auto Rad setup and the new Vaporwerks tank. Piece by Piece is still my op plan for this car. The Drag Radial car is running now---I just finished up the interior and am waiting on the hood to get painted--then the rear tail panel where we modded it for the wheelie bars. Should be testing it in the next couple of months. I will get some pics of it up--maybe today.

Glad you're OK!! :hello:
