I have wanted to start a post for a while where people could post pictures or links to fabrication work that has really inspired them. It can be race cars, trophy trucks, aerospace, just top notch fabrication.

This also means no self promotion, fab work that has inspired you.

I went to Tom Hanna's Shop this summer and saw his Bonneville streamliner project and his amazing cackle fest dragster.

Roger I have no pictures because they are all on this forum. But I have to say we have a bunch of great fabricators on this site .And without going into alot of names I have to say Gonzo (JCG) and Jason (WAR) have really got my attention with their fabrication skills. They are great guy's to talk to, and learn from!! And like I said their are many many more on this site, but these two in my opinion got it going on right now:hail:

I'm fortunate to be 15 miles from the SAC air museum, that has some killer displays of old radial engines! It's amazing the power those motors made 50 - 60 yrs ago...

I met Mark Bohlen thru a customer that had his 67 Pro Street Camaro plumbed before the car came to me for final body & paint.. We painted the 67 & car was in assembly & needed the final details for plumbing & was asked to work with Mark.. When I started going to Mark's shop I noticed that he just was not plumbing cars but also doing alot of custom fabrication work.. Looking @ his work inspired me to take our shop into the next level of what we could do other than just cutting & replacing body panels.. I saw the Cuda & payed careful attention to all his detail of how even the smallest pcs were hand fabricated! We are not yet @ the level of what Mark can do or some of the other fabricators in this forum but I have a big list of equipment we are buying for the year of 2010.. Here are some pics of what got me inspired to branch out & take our fabrication shop to the next level

I'm a huge fan of race-dezert and all off road and sand car fabrication so it's hard to top that one.

The audio installation this guy builds is absolutely amazing. The molds he makes and way he does carbon fiber is amazing, but most of all the aluminum pieces he makes with only a router. I can only imagine what he would think of with a CNC machine.

If somebody thinks Ironworks did something to inspire them, that's cool, post it up. We do some nice work, but there are some guys out there who can kick some amazing ass in a workshop building amazing things that should be hung in a museum somewhere. I did not start this post to brag. I try to let our work speak for it self....

I wanted to create a thread that would take months and months to look at and examine all the amazing work in each different post. So post away post you links and pics. I need more car porn to look at.

Thanks guys, but I define inspirational as something somebody else does that makes you want to turn off the computer and go back out in to a cold shop and work to sharpen you skills that much more. ( Welding, Machine work, Solidworks, Tube bending, wiring, etc) It could be something that is not your style of car or project, but the work done on that item is so unreal it motivates you to do better. Or it could be a Pro-touring 69 camaro as long as it motivates you to want to improve your skills.

Enough people, including myself, self promote on this site, but I just wanted to see work that inspires no matter your skill level.

Rodger knows how to push my fabrication buttons, so I'll add my two cents.
INSPIRATION-What drives you to go out to the shop or even outdoors and build it better. Better because most of us, if not all of us, want it to better next time. Faster, cleaner, lighter, smoother, cooler, but just plain better. Not to impress anyone else, but for our own self. We want to make it better.
I will be the first to admit sometimes its hard to be inspired. Yes, there are alot of cool cars and trucks out there. But I'm not talking about cool. I'm talking about "What inspires you".
Inspires you to make what ever you're building better.

A couple of years ago I wanted to be able to TIG weld like the Indy car guys who had a shop down the street. The Indy Car shop was kind of an inspiration, but was almost to far out there in my mind. Anyway I went to my local community college started taking welding classes. I can MIG, but I wanted to weld like the big boys. Practice practice practice, four days a week, every night. Today I can TIG, but the pond of guys who can TIG weld is unbelievable, I jumped into a pond where I'm a peice of dirt.
My point is I was inspired to weld better and today I'm still inspired, but you might be suprised who is providing the inspiration.

Go back to the first page and look at Tom Hanna's fabrication.
Now go back and look again.
That should be enough inspiration to turn off the computer and go back to the shop do something, anything, just work on something.

Yes, we all have piles of parts that didn't work out, but the next time I built it, it was better. And maybe I even tried to use Tom Hanna's single sheer idea on my next bracket (did you notice the F9 bolts and button head stainless steel in the correct application).
Rodger is not going to be inspired by his own work (which is why he didn't post any of his own stuff).
I would bet that most guys (top builders too) are inspired buy someone else's work.

So post up the fabrication work that inpires YOU.
The fabrication that makes you drop everything go back to the shop.

If you have some time, and I do mean a lot of time (grab a bowl of popcorn) and want to see some fabrication porn...(and engineering porn)

WOW !!!! This thread is awesome.

I would have never thought I would be insperational to someone else. Thank you very much Cris (I think I'm going to cry).

I cant' even start the list of people and places that inspire me but I will try.
My biggest inperation had to be my Mom. I lost her to cancer 6 years ago. If it were'nt for her I would'nt be writing this. She always taught me to do my best keep my head up and don't let anything hold you back. I think about her every day and when things are tuff (every day) I think about her more. That's what keeps me motivated and to never give up ! One of my favorite lines " Keep doing better than your best and never letting it rest"

As for all the talent in this world. Bobby Walden (good friend) one of the best metal men around he did alot of the under hood work on Shicayne and all the work on Sniper. Rad rides. Tom Hannan(Metalshapers.org), Craig Naff(Golden Sub),D.S.E, Some of my local friends Nick @ Red Zone (cage in F-Bomb) Tom Nelson of N.R.E. Every metal shaping book avalible to man(I hear there's a huge new one coming out). Ironworks, Pinkees rod shop, Roadster Shop, Steve Moal, Snick's, Rodders Journal, All the different friends and builders on Lat-G. Jesse James, to see this guy build bikes at the right time and place in history and to take it to a level and style no one else has. Thats a huge motivation and inspiration.

There are so many more out there. If you have the motivation and drive like I do and the rest of us out there we will all be that much better at what we do. It will keep bringing out more talent that you thought you never had because you were inspired and motived by the people, projects, and ideas they created with there own two hands.

Thanks again Roger for getting us inspired

One of my biggest inspirations of all time is Richard Michael Pazua. This Guy's work is insane !!!! It blow's my mind. If this guy gets an idea he makes the tool and then the product. But he just doesn't make a tool he takes it to the extreme. Check him out at www.allshops.org/ or metalshapers associatin

This isn't a car (but it's car related) but this trophy was built some of the best fabricators I have ever seen. It was used in the NASCAR awards ceremony in NY last week. It is 12 ft tall and disassembles for shipping. Hell, the shipping crates for the flags are a work of art.

I feel pretty good about a lot of the stuff I've been fabbing especially given that I"m entirely "internet" taught and have crappy Harbor Freight levels of tooling and a tiny shop. Nothing to compare to the pro's not to mention the people on this thread. But what always blows me away isn't so much the thought and ability that goes into making these pieces - I'd like to think my mind works in some of the same ways.

What always makes me laugh at my own crap is the level of perfection in all the pieces. I can do some metal shaping and TIG it together nicely enough, but everything I do has a home made quality to it. THere is always some slight asymmetry, big scratches in the surface, messed up corners or places where I have to put things into tension to keep them aligned.

And the grinder and some bondo can cover up a lot of problems.

But when I look at things like that submarine car and it looks like it came straight out of a hot rod extrusion machine.....I still can't manage to completely planish all the hammer bumps out of a small piece of metal.

That is what is depressing about looking at incredible work like this !

Of course I only spend 20 hours a week hot rodding, always under a lot of time pressure, and only for the last 10 years. I guess I could imagine a world where 50 hours of fabbing a week for the last 40 years might get you pretty good at stuff.

I started thinking what actually INSPIRED me to change a stock Camaro. I know there's a ton of builds out there.
But at the beginning prior to becoming a member here, not scrolling through the web and basically only hitting local shows my inspiration came from Scott G's Camaro. Ive seen several cars in mags that were really nice but in person for a Camaro, thats what got me thinking, then came the G force Cuda. When the Brunning boys started the E-ticket Challenger thats what gave me inspiration to do a custom chassis.

Backstory from Hot Rod Jan 05:

He Makes Us All Look Like Chumps
Sometimes all you can do is shake your head in stunned admiration when you see a project like Jim Dunham's scratch-built Mark I GT40 replica. A Ford vehicle-packaging engineer by day, Jim has been at work since 1997 handbuilding an exact duplicate of Ford's legendary supercar in his garage from the ground up. "I decided to build one for myself from scratch since I sure could never afford to buy an original," he says. After measuring four original GT40s and gaining access to another chassis that was under restoration, Jim drew up his own full-scale plans using CAD software, built wooden body bucks, and began forming the monocoque body tub, which is now about 90 percent complete, from sheetmetal just like the originals. He's also building the running gear and body panels in his home garage, including handforming the roof and other body panels using a hammer and dolly and an English wheel. "I try to tell guys anyone can do this; it's not tough," Jim says. Jim hopes to have the car running with a mechanically injected small-block Ford by next year and he intends to run it in open-track and vintage racing events. Unbelievable.

I saw the CAD models for this project back when they were a student engineering project, long before they went public and took on a life of its own. His knowledge of exotic wood species is unreal, and the length they are going to in making 98% of this car out of wood and functional is even crazier. tires, glass, instruments, and basic engine is pretty much the only thin that will not be wood.

Got bored today and was flipping through the March issue of Hot Rod Magazine when I stumbled upon the '70 Mustang "Trans-Cammer." I remember being blown away at SEMA, as I'm sure many of you were. Anyway, I decided to google it because I haven't seen much info on the car around here, maybe a couple shots from SEMA or the Ultimate Street Car Challenge, but nothing I hadn't seen in person. Let me just say, the owner/builder needs a plate holder that reads, "proud to be awesome," because what lies under the skin on this car is simply amazing. It is clean, purposeful, and intricately detailed to a level that instantly puts almost everything else out there to shame.

Finished shots start at the top of the first page, but click through all the pages because the thread is in the process of being update with more build pics

As beautiful and well fabricated as that rig is, I still have a hard time reconciling "race chassis" and the front end horse buggy suspension. Its kind of messing with my head actually - triangulated Nascar/GT style front end space frame, with radius arms, CF brakes and a deadmans axle.

A little while ago I found a post on either this or another forum of a young guys Tig welding that was just outstanding. I have never seen anything like it. I also remember there were pics of a mini truck he was building with his brother. I have been searching the forum and cant find it anywhere. Does anyone remember this or have a link to it????

I couldn't not respond to this thread! You guys have covered a lot of the cars that have inspired me (ie. Terrible Herbst Trophy Trucks, Robby Gordon's Hummer, Brunning Auto, Rad Rod by Troy...etc etc). I started out interested in the off-road stuff and in university I designed and built a custom off-road race car ...er go kart from scratch. I spent many hours studying class 1 cars and trophy trucks on Race Dezert!

Now I work for an off-road racing transaxle company (Weddle Industries). Someone posted Robby Gordon's Hummer wondering what it started out as. That's a custom tube frame race car with a hummer body (carbon fiber of course) on top, it's basically a class 1 buggy. We sold him the transaxle that it uses and do all the prep work/rebuilds on the trans.

Lots of cars and shops on here inspire me: Gonzo, Ironworks, Penny, Payback, BentFab, Built by Brooks, Bill Amsley, Fesler....
Good on ya!
-Dave

ps. hey, my first post! I almost went a year just lurking!

And I love the out-in-the-weeds farm look of the facility - then to see the stuff rolling outta there kills me.

Wish I had someplace like that close, but I'd be there all the time !

Have you been to Rod Emory's place ? They do porsche stuff - but there are some nice pieces coming from them too. In your neck of the woods ?

Jim -- Never been to Emorys shop. It's not far from Portland (where I was born and have relatives etc) so maybe I'll check it out next time I'm down there.

BTW -- the "barns" at Divers are anything but... they have full on fab shops going there -- and paint etc... as well as clean room... And YES it's in the sticks - with beautiful views - and the travel time from home to work is "minimal".

Rodger -- I live about 50 minutes from their shop... it would be closer but, of course, it's out on 2 lane roads and you can't just clip out there at 75... They're like 40 miles from me.

Nick lives probably a 35 minute drive.... I don't know where the other guys live.

Neither of these drives (mine or Nicks) to their shop would be the kind of nasty stop and go urban traffic that we all hate. It's back roads, and secondary state hiways... and it's PRETTY out that way. I can't imagine anyone complaining about getting "out of town" to go to work. Nick is young - mid 20's and gets to work with some of the best minds in the business... what's to complain about!

Timmy has 25 acres - horses - few neighbors - and a beautiful place... He only works on stuff he wants to do - and has a waiting list to get a car built by them. What a life.

The guy next door has built a few cars in his garage in the last 25 years. The welding on the cars are a work off art, and with the speed they do, you need a good fabricator/ welder.

I was absolutely blown away by this Viper from SEMA. It takes a lot to get me excited about a car anymore - I think the last car that made me lose it was the Gforce Cuda. I don't like show cars especially over the top show car builds, but over the top functional builds turn my crank.

Check out this bad boy:

http://speedhunters.com/archive/2010/11/02/car-spotlight-gt-gt-twins-turbo-motorsports-dodge-viper.aspx

And then follow along on the 250 fab photos here:

(appetite whet- most of us just connect a drain line from the turbos to the oil pan - these guys hand built (of course) little drain tanks complete with strainers and air separator AND vent line ! Look like little jewels. And that manifold - take me away to the fainting couch !)

I'll never really understand what drives guys to build these over the top show cars but some nice work on them. I'm especially not into the "cover all the functionality with smoothed out metal" mentality, but definitely takes some skill and vision. I know one thing, any car with that kind of power, hell, any car that is driven will need work and you'd be looking at 24+ hours of labor just to disassemble the front end and tape off everything to do basic maintenance.

I'd take Bob Griffith's Viper every day of the week over a dozen Ridler cars whether I'm driving, showing, or racing.

Like I said, I don't understand it, but good for them. I like keeping craftsmen employed.

Nope your way off it is a 1937.

1937 Talbot-Lago – Type 150-C-SS/Sport Coupe
Much admired for its distinct body design called “goutte d’eau” or Tear Drop, this car was a wedding gift for the fourth wife of an Indian prince. This chassis (#90107) is the most unique of the 14 coupes built — it’s the only one with fully skirted front and rear aluminum fenders, all aluminum body, a sunroof and painted (not chromed) wheels. This is also one of only two Talbot-Lagos with the cloisonné hood ornament in the shape of a royal crown, testifying to the cars Royal Indian heritage.

Engine Type: OHV, Hemi, In-Line Six, triple carburetors
Cylinders: 6
Horsepower: 140+
Manufacturer: Automobiles Talbot-Darracq (Paris, France)
Coachbuilder: Figoni & Falaschi (Paris, France)
Price When New: $4,873 (chassis only)

To be exact.

I sent a note to Tom on Facebook saying I was a fan.
He sent me back a note saying 'Thanks a million for your friendship".
'And since he's in Santa Fe several times a year we should grab a meal together'
I was blown away. He is a first-class guy. Wow.

Alright guys, we got to go tour the Nethercutt Collection this afternoon. It was amazing to see the level of craftsmanship these guys do. We saw a 20 million dollar Bugatti and a 1o million dollar piano. We got see all the secret rooms and and the restoration shop.

Here are some pics of my favorite car a 1937 Bugatti. Amazing. It used to be black. There is no bondo on this car. Or lead filler. Really

The wood work in amazing. The interior is some kind of pig skin. the engine made like 300hp in 1937. The car is valued at 20 million. The fit and finish is perfect.

More to come

Can you say 10 million dollar piano. It is amazing craftmanship, but I cannot remember who owned it and what they wrote on it.

The player piano that was attached to it, played that original guys music that was put together by that composer himself. So it is like a guy I have never heard of and can't remember but still lives on with his actual music.

Jeff,

I was with Rodger at the Nethercutt Museum yesterday.... Wait until you see some of the other pics (I know Rodger will post more).

Like Rodger said, the Bugatti in the pics is a former race car. The chassis/motor combo is the first ever winner of the Monaco Grand Prix. The car originally had no top. Some Rich guy is Paris bought the car, and had a new body commissioned (her was getting blown, or something)..... If I remember correctly, the rebody effort took place in the 1930's!.... Anyways, being a race-car, the engine was kept cool because the car was constantly moving. They added the fan to keep it cool since they don't typically drive it at race speeds anymore. This car has a top speed of ~175 mph. Alex has taken it to 100 mph.

Technically, the DeDion isn't independent. Both ends are tied together by a common member. As far as camber control is concerned, it's exactly like the standard live axle.

It's biggest advantage is that you're reducing unsprung weight by suspending the differential from the chassis.

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergModel.jpg

No, it's not a real full-size Duesenberg, but rather a beautifully constructed working model about 35" long made in 1/6 scale.

Louis Chenot has spent the past ten years building this incredibly detailed 1932 SJ Duesenberg LaGrande dual-cowl phaeton. Not only does it look good, but the engine runs, the lights work, the top mechanism functions and the transmission and driveline are complete. Lou started his research on this project over fifty years ago with the purchase of a book and over the years collected many drawings and studied a number of Duesenbergs while they were being restored, taking photos and recording dimensions.

The model weighs about 60 pounds.

Lou's 40 year career was spent as a mechanical engineer. He once restored a vintage 1930 Cadillac

convertible that was on the show circuit for years, but now he prefers to work in miniature in the comfort of his home shop.

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergModel2.jpg

The bodywork is all metal, not fiberglass. Here is the car in Lou's shop before the brass coachwork was primed or painted. Lou is not adverse to starting over on a part that doesn't meet his standards. He started over on the especially difficult brass radiator shell nine times.

Most running models are built at larger scales like 1/3 or 1/4. Working in the smaller 1/6 scale magnifies the problems caused by miniaturizing certain parts. Remember that scale parts are 1/6 as long, 1/6 as high and 1/6 as deep as real parts, making them 1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6 or 1/216th of the volume of the original part.

Further complicating the prospect of building a running engine at that size is the fact that fuel molecules and electricity don't scale. It is very difficult to get tiny carburetors and little spark plugs to work like the big ones.

A video of Lou starting and running the engine for the first time can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6TetkMpFIc .

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergModelEngine.jpg

Inside the straight eight engine are all the correct parts custom machined to scale from steel, cast iron and aluminum. Here we see the block and crankshaft at the top. Arrayed below the block are the cast iron cylinder sleeves, pistons, wrist pins and assembled connecting rods.

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergModelCylinderHead.jpg

Even though there would be no way to tell once it is all assembled, the cylinder head shows that Lou didn't cheat.

The engine has 4 valves per cylinder--32 total--just like the real thing.

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergModelCylinderHead2.jpg

Here is the head (before painting) with the camshafts in place--there are 16 lobes on each shaft.

(The apparent curve of the upper shaft is caused by the camera's wide angle lens.)

The gears inside the differential will never be seen by anyone, but Lou cut them as actual hypoid gears rather than machining simpler bevel gears.

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergModelRearAxle-1.jpg

This is the dashboard and interior with the body primed but not yet painted.

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergInterior.jpg

Note the detailed instruments and engine-turned finish on the dash.

The complicated convertible top mechanism is shown in the lowered position.

chassis and engine at the NAMES show in Detroit in 2007.

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergDesigner.jpg

Lou was presented with a special Lifetime Achievement award by the Joe Martin Foundation for Exceptional Craftsmanship in 2009. The model was nearing completion but the engine had not yet run. Now that the engine runs and the model is completed, Lou has been selected as the foundation's "Metalworking Craftsman of the Year." The award includes an engraved award medallion and a check for $2000.00. Lou is the 15th person to receive this coveted annual award. Because it is likely that this could well be the finest running model car ever built in this small a scale, Lou's award this year will be presented as the "Craftsman of the Decade."

http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac65/PuckheadCamaro/DusenbergModelAward.jpg

More can be seen on this car and some of Lou's other projects at www.CraftsmanshipMuseum.com/Chenot.htm.

The model will be on public display in 2011 at the Cabin Fever Model Expo in York , PA in January and at the North American Model Engineering Society Expo in Southgate , MI in April where Lou will be officially presented with his award. It will also be on display at the Western Engine Model Exhibition to be held in conjunction with the Good Guys car show in Pleasanton , CA in August, 2011.

This message was produced by the Joe Martin Foundation. Please feel free to forward it to anyone you know who likes fine craftsmanship, car models, miniature engines and/or Duesenbergs. See the outstanding work of Lou and 99 other world-class craftsmen at www.CraftsmanshipMuseum.com.

Awesome trucks! I think it is pretty cool anytime some one can start with noting but a pile of raw materials and build a complete vehicle. But these are just over the top. And, to any casual observer they look like a factory made truck with big tires. On the outside anyway. Thanks for posting those build links.
