Hey Guys,
As many of you know I bought this car as a perfect white 1969 Camaro and had lots of issues, well we finally got them all worked out (what a pain in the A%$) We have had it in our shop for about 6 months as most of you know we got the car in tore it down and started to do all the work to it. Well we had some huge title issues so the car had to sit for well over 3 months. So we had to double time this build to get it to SEMA this year.
Enough of that, let’s move on to the cool parts and the not so cool parts and this is something you all need to really watch for when buying cars from the website. If you buy a car with tons of pictures and a good word behind it you still need to be very careful and make sure you are getting what you paid for.
Some might say we got this car at a great deal but once we got into it and realized we had to completely tear it down things weren’t so great. See for yourself as we transform this from a white terd to a Black Knight
Here is what we are going for and we are building a matching 2010 to go with this car.

Thats the problem with buying a car from the internet, you never know what you are going to get until you start tearing it down. This car has or had rust all over it so we had to keep going and going on something that we were told was perfect. SURE ADDS ALOT OF MONEY TO A PROJECT.

Kinda like taking a foxy lady home from a bar and once home you find out she has a bigger shlong than you!!
Never know what's under a dress or paint!!
I would figure with all your experience you would have looked at the car first. By no means am I defending the car.

thats the problem with buying a car sight unseen. We were told from very good sources here that this car is perfect and the guy selling it told it like it was. Maybe he did not know of some of the stuff here but he knew it was not rust free. We got about 10 min to look at it before we bought it and found a few small problems but once you dig in its a complete new game. People are very good at hiding things. We had a guy bondo and body work a underside floor board right over rust so it looked perfect. Not much you can do till you tear it apart. that’s just the way it goes.
As many of you know I bought the listed as perfect white 1969 Camaro from this site and had lots of issues,
You did not buy that car from this site. You bought it from a private party in a private sale.

Scott, it was bought from the for sale section here is all I meant, I think everyone knows that I did not buy it from you or Lateral-G.
You worded it as if you purchased it from me. I wanted it abundantly clear that this transaction was no different than if the car was listed on Ebay, CL, the newspaper, or any other classifieds that can be found anywhere.
I don't want you trying to demean this community based on a private sale.

roof coming next loading now and as you know that is a hard call to make because just when you think ok I have it all worked out you find more and it cost you twice as much to fix as it would have to replace. That as you know is the key to a quick and good build.

There was so much rust in the roof it was just easier to cut it off and start over with a new skin from Goodmark.

whoever had the bright idea to put a top on these where water can sit and cause rust should have been taken out back and well you can figure it out if you have ever fixed one of these because of the top.

Scott this car came from one of your greats so there is no way around the fact that a PT guy sold something that was not what he stated and on top of all that had all the issues with the title after I checked and double checked this guy out from everyone up here. Stop worring about your site I am sure most poeple would have read nothing into it. Lets get back to the car and task at hand.
Scott is a great friend and runs a good show, your comments about Tyler being Scott's great, and telling him to stop worrying about his site really is out of line. This is nothing more than you bashing Tyler and using Scott's site as the octagon. We can all see the car was not perfect but how many pictures do you really need to convince us of that.

OK so the car is a ton of metal work as you can see, this set us back like 2-3 weeks on the build but we got it all finished. car will be taken down at paint all body work done and painted black with gun metal stripes.
LS-9 Engine going in as well. Did I mention this will be in our booth at SEMA this year? come by and check out the car.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but why are you guys patching it up? I would think it to be a much better way to go with replacing the whole panel. The here and there patches look to be poorly done (in my eyes). Again, don't take this wrong, it is not in any way a slam on you or your shop, I see some VERY nice rides come out of there, that is why I am posting this. This build does not look like a pro build, more like something a normal guy would do in a garage or shop... Maybe I missed a post or reason? Good luck with the end result !

This car is clean just has some rust that needed attention. There is no reason to replace a stock panel if it has some rust in it. Better to keep the car as stock as possible because all the aftermarket stuff you buy fits worse.
If we were to get into replacing all the panels and redoing everything it would drive the price up even higher. Its funny how no mater how you replace something its not right in some poeples eyes.
DOOM might want to step in here and help explain why shops do what they do. you guys are only seeing pics and not what is really there so its hard for a lot of you to get it. Sometimes its better to change out the parts but if you can save a panel and keep a car more original that is the way to go.

I feel your pain on that. I just dont like buying a rust free can to find rust hiden in hard to get parts. means that the last time they did some work they did not do it right.

sure if the panels are unsaveable yes replace but if the rust is pretty minimal (like this car) i feel its MUCH better to fix the original panels.
as far as the car being listed as a rust free car... i positive tyler had no intent to decive you he just never got into that car as deep as you guys did so never noticed it im sure... i was around that car quite a bit and it did look and feel to be rust free.

Yeah these panels are too nice to tear apart and put after market ones on. I agree with you that Tyler did not know about most of this and I am fine with that. everyone knows the issues I had and they are over.

No mater how much metal work you do you are going to have mud, no way around it now you may put on 3 gal and sand off over 2 but you will have mud. We are very good with metal around here and you still have mud. the mud you see is not from us we took that all off and started over.

I find this thread wery edjucating . Thanks for all the details Chris.
Please keep us posted when glass , trim and interior goes in.

Jason, It's as simple as how much time to repair as to how much time to replace. I think this car is a great example. Chris chose to repair the quarter panels, the majority of the panels are in good shape. So repair time is about, lets say 5 hours compaired to the 15++++ hours a side to replace. The roof would take several hours to repair. The time it would take to repair that roof would be much more time than to replace. You also have to take into consideration what the owner wants or has the money for. There is a ton of other factors that go into this equation, budget and parts availability being just some of it. Chris has alot of time and money invested in his name he's not going to put out sh^t work. I think his cars speak for them self.. I hope this helps you understand .

Chris, thanks for posting the build pictures. I don't post a lot here but I felt the need to chime in and note that I find it amazing how critical some people are being on this thread. I'm getting the since that the majority of the critics have never completed multiple cars themselves and actulaly done this type of metal work before. As someone with a dozen or so cars under their belt I wanted to take the time and say how impressed I am with the work you guys are doing in such a short time and the correct decisions you are having to make on the fly. Your work thus far from what I see is top notch and I would be thrilled to have a car built by you guys (if I didn't have the skills/tools to build my own).
Looking forward to the finished product.

I think this will really help with why and how things are done and sometimes you make a decision on the fly and hope for the best. Sometimes it really bites you and you lose big time and other times it works out great. Its usually always faster to fix than replace.

Welcome to the internet, it seems no matter how you do something there is always someone out there that has a better idea or a better way to do it. We are not the best in the world but we are a dam good shop and we build stuff correct. We do what we do because we know what we are doing.
If anyone would like to question how or why we do something I do not have a problem with it. I will show every picture of a build and hide nothing as you can see. That is what sets our shop from most others, we are not afraid to show you guys how to do stuff right and have lots of details to prove what we are doing will look right when finished.
There are a lot of guys that will say that’s not how I would do it or why did you do that and when it comes to building cars there is really no wrong way to do things as long as it’s done right. I just wanted to show you guys the correct way to patch a panel and how to protect it so it won’t rust out again.
I figure that this post was a perfect one for what to watch for, even the best guys can miss stuff when buying a car and that can cost you a ton. This is more to show everyone out there that even a car that looks perfect can have $20K in rust problems and set you back weeks.
This car is nice but had issues, I would have not bought it knowing what I know now. I would have found a clean donor car to work with, one that I know has rust and where it is. I would say that about 80% of everyone selling cars on EBAY and the forums is covering stuff up. I have yet to really buy a car that was as good as stated. That is why I try to always buy stock with as close to original paint as possible.
If nothing else people that have seen this car will now know that there can be bad stuff on every car and it’s hard to find till you really get into it. You live and learn and try to buy better next time. I bought this car mostly for the parts so at the end of the day I got a decent price on a car because I was able to sell off all the parts. Nothing on this car was untouched. New everything

OK guys, I feel the need to jump back in this thread to clarify a couple things. I never meant for my post to sound like I was putting down the work being done or come across as someone that can do a better job, that's not the case. I asked the questions for the reason of wanting to get an answer... plain and simple. I began building my 57' Chevy many years back and have yet to finish it, and will begin my 69' Camaro soon. There are a few panels that I chose to "patch" as you guys did and there is a part of me that thinks I didn't do it the "best" way. I see a big name shop doing the same sort of thing I did and it makes me sort of rethink my decision... Maybe my car is done better built than I thought, I have just always viewed "patching" as the cheap and easy way out, not to say it is wrong, but not the 100% best way of repair. Guys, I am only expressing - MY - views, not saying that what I think is the final word in right or wrong, I am not an arrogant person. I appolagize if my post was taken the wrong way, I tried to make it clear I wasn't trying to question your ability or knowledge, only looking for reason. Best of luck finishing the car, it is looking pretty good (alot better than I could do myself)!

Jason no problem with you asking, sometimes it need a complete replace and sometimes you can just patch the panel if you do it right. Notice how we made our own metal pieces that follow and match the factory perfect that way there is no way to tell once fixed what was touched. our part will be better and stronger than the factory one. Once body worked out metal shapping not filling with bondo everything will be perfect

I'd say that a large persentage of cars out there are that way. A good paint job has ruined many ambitions. We have a hard time telling people that after we blast the car there won't be much left of it. I'd rather buy a car with sun burnt paint any day over someone elses build. Car looks great now.
I feel your pain on that. I just dont like buying a rust free can to find rust hiden in hard to get parts. means that the last time they did some work they did not do it right.

Being in this business for a while you come to learn that when restoring a 40+ year old car like this that everything is a judgement call and that is where the experience of dealing with cars much worse than this comes into play. It's always easy to second guess someone from some pics over the internet but unless you are the guy standing there with the grinder and welder with the job of addressing that panel you aren't the one to be diagnosing what to do. All of the patch work his guys did seems proper for what can be seen in the pics and from watching the metal work that has come out of Fesler over the last few years I'm not one to question why they did or didn't replace a panel.
And don't get caught up in the "I don't want Bondo" on my car fallicy. If you media blasted a 2011 brand new car off from the assembly floor you will find some form of body filler- typcially at panel joints. It is meant to smooth imperfections on metal work, hide welds, and generally make everything look pefect before those coats of primer and paint are laid out. Anything that is not perfectly smoothed before paint will not be perfectly smooth after paint. The reason Bondo has such a bad name is that too many people, either purposly or out of stupidity, have decided to use it as a shaping material and not a finishing material. I belive ICAR teaches that It should be no more than 1/8" maximum thickness.
The car looks great guys- I'll see it here in a few days at SEMA!!
