I was given a turbo from a buddy of mine, he got it from a pro street firebird years back. He does not know the specs, nor do I. How do I go about finding out what it is / size/ make / etc.. ? There are no manufacture names on it...

Anyone here able to help out? I can give any specifics needed...

The first thing is to detemine the frame or family i.e. T4 or T6 inlet

Start by measuring the turbine inlet flange. The T4 will have a bolt centerline distance of 2.75 x 3.25. The T6 flange will measure 2.75 x 4.40.

The next best thing is to remove the compressor and turbine housings and use a pair of digital calipers to measure to the tip to tip dimensions of the smaller end (inducer) and larger end (exducer) of the blades on the wheels.

You can then start to determine what it is and also take a visual inspection of it's condition. IT's a good time to check the endplay (thrust bearing) for wear etc. Let us know what you come up with and some pictures and we should get you in the ballpark.

Pics would help alot.

No name on it? Sounds like it might have been ground off. If not, then it could be a cheap copy. Garett sometimes doesn't mark the turbos they make for the OEMs, but most are marked (as are KKK, Precision, Turbonetics, Masterpower, IHIs). Borg Warner made a bunch of diesel turbos for Detroit Diesel that weren't marked as well.

Pics would help alot.

Looks to be from a diesel truck application. Real small compressor wheel with large exahust housing is a dead give-away. Not much use there for a performance application given the cost of budget turbos these days.
