just finished charging the a/c and decided to go out and do some tuning, since I'd swapped the cam this winter. Put about 25 miles on it, cruising through town. Doesn't overheat, runs great.
Had not got into boost, just loading the car easy playing with the tune. Right before I got home I decided to push it into boost to take a peek at the a/f. Going about 55 mph in 4th gear, and as I put the throttle down it downshifted, blew the tires off, and went 90 degrees sideways........... :wow: :faint: :willy:
son of a ..................................... well, I gathered it in without issue, but was very surprised. All in all a successful first drive, and I think this car is going to be a blast, but I'll be pulling some boost out of it for the street.................

pretty much 90 degrees, as I was heading straight for the ditch............. :wow: yeah, got my heart pumping.
Reminds me of a story I read on a Cobra board, pretty much sums up my feelings. Guy built a Cobra replica and put a sprint car motor in it. But during the build his buddies talked him into de-tuning the thing, "make it streetable"............. So he dropped the compression, cam swap, smaller heads, converted to gasoline, etc. Car ran good but didn't do it for him. So he re-assembled the alky parts, right back to the 750+ hp specs. Took the car for a spin, came back and said............ "my legs are shaking, I can't breathe, and I feel like I might have a heart attack................... now that's a car! :D

Always fun... might have to play with the TCU and set the downshift parameters differently... I'm thinking double downshifts from 4>2 should be a lot of fun for you. :unibrow:
I've had a few moments like that with unexpected loss of traction and resulting heart rate changes; one was going over a little bridge over a creek at WOT in 3rd and blew the tires off over the expansion joint at 90 or so... and the other one was at Sacramento raceway about 9:45pm when the track was cool and it blew the tires off on the 3-4 shift at 115mph and I got a quick glance at the left wall out of the windshield. Everyone asked if it smoked the clutch when I got back to the parking spot in the pits because they heard the RPM flare. I was going to make one more pass but I packed it in for the night.
Rolling burnouts at 60-70 are always fun when you plan on them and are ready for them... but unplanned traction "events" are the ones that leave me feeling a little funny. They're fun for sure but always leave me with the "what if things went bad" feeling. :willy:
I need to come up and go for a ride so I get motivated again to get my car on the road. I haven't touched it in over a month and a half-- I'm "just not feeling it" and haven't all year even though there's a big pile of LS2 parts from Kurt Urban and turbos sitting right in front of the car!

Dang, Jody I'm glad it didn't get any more exciting than that!...How far into the boost did you get?

Well I guess if you had scuffed the paint it would have given you an excuse to change the color :D

you're a funny guy.............. Actually this is a good lesson to be careful and pay attention. Maybe the new cam changed things, or maybe just that particular section of road was slick, don't know. I really need to get my traction control installed, have had it for a long time. Thing is my business is very tough right now, and I'll likely be putting the car up for sale. Don't want to, this has been my favorite car overall of everything I've owned, but the extra cash would help a ton right now.

Sorry to here you may need to sell it do to the way things are. I fear it is going to get worse before it gets better. I have even thought a few times of selling mine before something comes up to where I have to sell it. The problem I think I would run in to is there are a lot of cars that could be had in the 30-40K range that mine would fall in. Good luck with the sell of yours. Should be good for some pro ball player/Dubai Prince type money.

Oof!
Well, that right there is what your paddle shifter is for. Your TCU only knows throttle position and wheel speed. The TCU does not anticipate your next move. It can't see the road ahead. It doesn't know if you will be powering out of the next corner, or coming to a complete stop for a school bus. And calibration will only get you so far. There are many circumstances, like this, where you are simply smarter than the computer.
At its lowest common denominator, the paddle shifter is simply a fancy looking, manual override device. Not very glamorous, but true. It lets you decide when to hold or change gears. It accomplishes this by ignoring wheel speed and waiting for a manual input. In this particular situation, you might have held 4th gear and/or selected 3rd gear prior to throttle application. Preselecting the downshift is less harsh than a kickdown. I have a lot of big power turbo/blower customers for this exact reason. Sometimes the big power cars only need a 1-speed.
Another example: The TCU does not understand wheelspin. If the car's moving at 20 mph and the rear tires are moving at 70 mph, the TCU thinks you are moving at 70 mph. It'll try to upshift. Then, sensing wheelspin, you might ease off the throttle (or worse, lift abruptly). The TCU, sensing a reduction in TPS (load) will try to upshift again. You, on the other hand, anticipating wheelspin might choose manual mode and short shift the 1-2 to minimize gear multiplication and then run out 2nd and 3rd gear to redline.
