View Full Version : Drive by wire throttle vs GM electronic foot pedal

Hopefully this is the right place to put this. I'm just filling in a few more holes in my firewall before I get ready to lay some primer on it. Once I get to the point of getting a motor, I will be getting the GM LSX376 if it's actually out and if not, the LS3. My question though is..which throttle option is better: drive by wire throttle or GM's electronic foot pedal? If I go with the GM one, can I fill in the accelerator pedal and drive by wire holes? Thanks in advance.

I would make that decision depending on what efi controller I was going to run. If you're using an aftermarket setup then a cable throttle is mostly required, but the factory ECU's that run throttle by wire would have me using that setup.

Yup. The GM harness kit comes with the pedal assembly.
If you decide to do something else, Lokar is making a nice throttle cable setup.

Thanks guys. I guess what I'm wondering though....is there a benefit to either set up? I see some companies will rewire a electronic to a wire set up. Does one give better throttle response, etc? That's more what I'm wondering.

Drive by wire can give very good throttle response, but it needs to be calibrated for the specific application. If not calibrated correctly, you can end up with holes (meaning when you step into the throttle, you may get no response, then when you step in a little more or in some cases alot more, you get too much) Also, when driving at low speeds and tipping in or out of throttle, the transitions may not be very smooth without a good calibration in place. Something to think about. Good luck with whatever you choose !!

Thanks Paul. Does anyone know of any issues/drawbacks with the gm electronic pedal?

Last time I talked to Speatech there wasn't a cruise control available for the throttle by wire setup. But that was over six months ago, may have changed.
I wasn't sure about the ETC before I did the LS7 swap, I didn't know if it would have decent throttle response... but I'm extremely happy with it. It definitely doesn't hurt performance.

I think that that only drawbacks to the Cable is then you have to have another hole in the firewall, and have to route the cable (Not that hard). I dont mind the idea of drive by wire, but to me I like the idea of a cable on an old car.
