I got some new parts this week. Speedtech frame and a bunch of Anvil carbon parts. I think I have a new name for my car too. I think it will be called "Bloodline" since its an extension of me and has red lines.

Yeah, those wheels look SICK!! I can only imagine how nice they will look on that car. The red pin striping along the rim set it off BIG TIME!:wow:
As far the firewall goes, I like the angled cut out. Looks killer and is different.

Project Track Rat:
http://i42.tinypic.com/169ri13.jpg

So, basically you're stealing someone else's rendering, making subtle changes and building their car? I realize you're 'giving credit' but cmon. I realize I may be coming off as an ass but am I the only one that finds this unacceptable? They say imitation is the best form of flattery but...

Did Hermance Design give you permission to use that rendering?

Not really an accusation. I'd just never build a car someone else is already planning on building. Maybe its just me....

Good luck on the build regardless.

When it comes to the Camaro I think everthing has been done that can be done to these cars .. Unless your RS ,RING BROTHERS ,or Troy etc, Its hard to come up with something new. The average guy just does'nt have the resorces they have. I personally do'nt have the imagination these guys do so I have to look at others for ideas. I do'nt think thats a bad thing. I hope I make sense here..:lateral:

Doom -- Good response and spot on!

I was at GoodGuys show this weekend -- I own a "belly button" 56 Chevy (okay it's a Nomad but it's still just another 56 Chevy) -- I also own a 37 Ford... My buddy is shopping to build a 34 Ford or 35 Chevy... so as we're walking around he says -- Geez! 34 Fords are everywhere! To which I replied - Yeah! Because "everyone likes 'em"! --- Later we come across a GREMLIN and he says -- "man! That's rare" -- To which I replied "Yeah... because nobody liked 'em then either"!!

LOL

When you get right down to it - our Camaros - Mustangs - Tri Fives - Early Fords are all "me too" cars -- but it's because we LOVE THEM!

I think the only time it matters if you "stole" someone's idea - is if you were building a SEMA show car... and you were both going to be showing there...

So I'll keep the Torque Thrusts on my 56.... and look just like everybody else - and LOVE looking at and driving it. :woot:

What the hell -- I stole the "look" of THE MULES original engine (Enderle 8 stack if I recall correctly) from Charley after meeting him and seeing the car a long time ago... THANK YOU CHARLEY! Well - and Mark too I suppose!! LOL

Making complete sense, and I agree. Everything has been done. But building clones of cars that haven't even been built is a bit much. Maybe Steve just has a real good eye. Lots of Bad Penny colored first gens lately

The guy took someone else's rendering (in the open and admittedly) and made some changes to it to try to make it his own. And with the owner of the project and artist's permission apparently. Like what was said.... it's a frickin 1st gen Camaro... good look being truly unique... what else can you ask for here?

And where are all the Prowler Orange 1st gens? You seeing them? Or are you talking variations of that color?

Tough crowd around here sometimes...

Its tough to build a car these days. As I build my car I find build pics with guys doing what I wanted to do months ago. But they will get their car done faster and then its "theirs" These days 1st gens have been modded to the max. So lets just all be happy these cars are still on the road and that guys like us are keeping them alive.

Vegas69
07-26-2009, 03:36 PM
It's pretty simple, when you choose to share your build with the world it's a risk you take. In the grand scheme of things, how often are these cars going to sit side by side? Everybody has their own idea of the perfect 1st gen and that's the fun part of this hobby. Luckily, we have the best aftermarkeet support of any car on the planet. I don't feel these cars are anywhere near the end of evolution.

dmc69

On top of all that even if you do use ideas from another person you still have to put in the man hours and $$$$ in to execute the idea. I think it was cool for Steve agree to it, but he didnt stop there, he actually did a damn good job photoshopping his own rendering for a fellow lat g member. Thats pretty cool.

Ben Hermance is the one who made it black and I also asked Steve if I could use his rendering and change it because I like the stripe idea. If you dont like my car then click a different thread and hassle someone else. If I am the one spending 40-50K on a car then I will build it how I want regardless of whose car it ends up looking like. Hell, I guess every camaro now that buys Anvil carbon parts must be copying Motiv8r or Track Rat.

You are right... nothing better than a slick as glass black paint job. The thing is, the paint looks awesome, way better than my cell phone pics show (the ones outside) and it hasnt even been cut & buffed yet. This is right out of the booth fresh. The same shop is doing my 69 so I went up there today and snapped a few pics of Johns car while I was there.

The black is a very deep dark black. I was amazed at how flat it is already... by flat I mean almost no orange peal at all. The Speis Hecker and the way he shoots it has it looking better than most paint jobs already. Looks awesome John.

West Coast Autocraft is giving me an insane black paint job. Heres his words on what they are doing:
Spies Hecker FP 1002 (2 coats)
FP 1002 mixed 50/50 with Spies Hecker 8015 clear (1 coat)
75% clear and 25% color (1 coat)
90% clear and 10% color (1 coat)
Spies Hecker 8015 clear (2 coats)
pull the car out of the booth and let it air dry for 3-5 days.
Wet sand the entire car smooth with 800 grit and put it back in the booth.
Spies Hecker 8015 clear (6 coats)
Color sand (800, 1000, 1200, 1500) then polish

Can someone explain why adding color to clear is being done . Do you get a sharper black out of it ?
Every factory black I have mixed up has had some white in the formula . I was about to eliminate it for a car I have coming up .Same result ?
Thats alot of mil thickness . Wish I could see it in person .

Its a crate LS3 with TSP 231/236 cam, PRC springs/rods. Regarding the LS3 525.... Id buy the cheaper one and do the cam yourself. You will save a TON of money and have the same power.

Will it settle at least 2 inches?

While I did not measure how much my car settled, it did lower significantly. I think two inches is possible. Give it awhile is my advice. If I recall correctly, it could take a couple months to settle to its lowest point.

ps...I added a couple of pictures to my build thread showing the settle over three months. I didn't want to post them here and jack your thread. Nice progress, btw.

Matt@BOS
03-23-2012, 10:54 AM
I wouldn't worry right now. You still have A LOT of weight to add into the car. Sound deadening, carpet, seats, headliner, interior panels, glass, audio, front sheetmetal, exhaust, and fluids are going to add a significant amount of weight. I know Bryan just posted up pictures of his, and it isn't even done yet. When it is done, it is going to have to be raised not just once, but also after a few months of settling, maybe a third time after 9 months or so. DSE's springs never seem to stop settling. I've heard hypercoils are better, but who knows. I think with the 19" wheels your car's stance even with the G Bar will be just fine!

Matt

John510
03-23-2012, 06:12 PM
For now the coil overs are removed and a metal rod was placed in there for the show to have it sit lower until I get my correct springs.

WCAC guys pulled an all nighter and got the Dynamat in and got it ready to be a roller. I have a permanent smile today knowing that it rolls! Manifold is still in production at Ozmo so that didn't get to be displayed.

Hey John car looks GREAT!!
to your question of will the car settle over time, Answer NO not at all with the Hyperco Springs.they are gaurenteed not to change in spring rate by more than 2% for 10 years if i remember correctly. You will need to geet shorter springs and shocks if your out of adjustment.
you now know the exact length of shock you need at ride heigth witht eh bars in the back so that will make it easy. you may still be able to reuse the springs. make sure the shock is close to the center of it's travel at ride height.

Spent another 9 hours today putting her together. She sits about 3" too high in the rear and I have everything at its lowest point. Maybe I need some shorter shocks?

Rear end is in, engine/tranny mounted and got her rolling finally!

I have got the SpeedTech Frame as well with Stainless Steel Works headers from Speedtech and Power Master Starter. I have the Milodon Oil Pan with remote oil filter, which I am planning to replace in the future. So could you please post the part number for the Autokraft Oil Pan? Was it an easy install as far as interferance with other parts goes?

Absolute was able to fit the column in today. Not sure if I want to paint the polished ring black or leave it polished. What do you guys think? I also took a drive down to Cupertino today to meet Jamie Krogdahl and pick up my manifold. Super cool guy and beautiful manifold. There are only 7 of these babies in the US! Well I have some more updates. The manifold is giving me issues. The flanges need to be removed and angled upward in order for it to clear the alternator and sanden. DOH!!!! The headers fit perfectly however I may get different valve cover since I fear the carbon ones might melt. The brakes are installed and look good. Everything will be under the dash even the brake lines. Remote reservoirs will be hidden in the cowl panel that way the firewall will stay perfectly smooth and clean.

Hey John - Absolutely love the underhood design and execution! A couple questions for you - do you know what the inner cooled intake temps will be on a TT set up and are those within spec for a carbon intake? Also, what boost PSI are you planning on running? I believe that's still a crate motor/stock compression right? Finally will exhaust route clear steering shaft - have you got that far in your planning?

You're on a roll Bro. I can't wait to see this one in person...

The intake is made with high temp resin and can handle the heat at at least 30 psi. It was pressure tested at 100psi. I am unsure on the intake temperature. Waste has a 7psi spring. Don't plan on going over the 7psi since the block is stock. I figure with the cam and 7psi I should still be around 600rwhp which is enough for me. I don't really need an insane amount of hp for a street car. The down pipe should clear the steering shaft no problem.

Now I hope my Anvil fenders don't melt!

The intake was pressure tested at 100psi. The external "pretty" carbon is for decoration and looks. Underneath that is the aerospace carbon which is way more sturdy and can handle the boost. The BOV should open before the pressure gets too high anyways right?

That roll bar is still sitting in my garage if you wanted it.

The wastegates control the amount of boost pressure, which in this case will be about 7psi. The BOV relieves residual boost pressure when the throttle is released.

The intake is safe as long as we can make it fit :D

Just a thought. Maybe he could use some of the clear film like Bad Penny has on the side of her just to protect the part that slides under the chrome? one piece on the stainless and one on the painted surface, if there's room.

sik68
05-23-2012, 11:23 AM
Hey John I definitely like where you mounted the reservoirs too. If you want to keep them there (you already put a lot of work into it) maybe you can modify a portion of the cowl panel for a removable section or hinged piece so you don't have to remove the whole thing every time.

I do agree with what the others are saying too though, because I actually fuss with my reservoirs a lot. Topping off fluids, checking fluid levels between track sessions, etc...it pays off to have them really accessible. Plus, I have spilled a bit of brake fluid here and there and I'd hate the feeling of spilling some fluid down into the abyss of the cowl area.

EDIT: I should also mention that when the hood is up, that area is kind of a pinch point especially if you're doing a cowl hood....could be tricky to access for funnels, refilling, etc.

Your project is so dope!

John510
05-23-2012, 09:43 PM
..... I can always use the clear bra stuff if I need to on the cowl if it will get scratched.

There are no windshield wipers in the car so Im not worried about it clearing those. Thats why man invented RainX. I don't plan on driving it in the rain anyways. The holes where the wipers go will have caps put in them.

To me the "WOW" factor is worth more than the extra time it will be to access my reservoirs. You rarely see under dash units on first gen camaros and I wanted to be different. When Im at a carshow people will be wondering where my brake/clutch stuff is. It will be a conversation starter
