Mountain Mikes Pizza in Union City and Dublin. The new store is a yogurt/ice cream shop called Frozone.

Nice, Mountain Mikes has always been my favorite....the pepperonis curl up into little crispy bowls that taste like thick bacon, so delicious.

Went and spent many more hours today trying to get my manifold on. Nobody was biting on the sale and it was looking too pretty sitting in my garage on the shelf so I decided to try to make it fit!

I had to grind a ton of metal off of the TB and I took a piece off of the AC compressor. Then I cut the manifold plenum with a dremel to get the angle up so the coupling would clear. Only took me about 982649832696 tries. I may end up doing a remote mount coil bracket to clean things up. I had to mount my coil brackets upside down so the plugs would clear the manifold plenum but now it blocks the oil filler cap.

JOhn, VERY Busy hands and congrats as well on the little princess! We have two little ones and they are a blast! Plus you can teach them soon enough how to wrench and they can start tearing up your car, and use those little hands on those hard to reach under the dash spots (child labor :D ) My 4 year old can already wrench (well more like take stuff apart  )

Well the brake lines are in and bled and the rear Chassisworks suspension is back in. Seats are done but need reassembled. Brakes and lines are hidden when your looking above down into the engine bay.

Just needs wired, driveshaft, fuel system, and started. Then all the body parts can go back on.

John, just got my 67 kinda half done (well enough to be able to drive and parts not fall out) last week. I know time is tight with work and little ones (I am burning the midnight oil myself, with work, and want to spend free time with my little ones), but consider tackling some of the stuff yourself if it is more reassembly and you have the skills. I would be glad to help on some stuff if you get to a tight spot, plus having your ride locally will give you the extra motivation. I know a ride taking a while to get built takes steam away, but hang in there. Several killer rides are being built here (i.e. your Maro and Lenies are great examples of inspiring kick ass builds), so again, hang in there!!

Talking about motivation, got the car "ready" enough to drive to the United show last weekend with the Blue Angels. I know it has to come down a couple feet :) I will pass by your store and give you a ride! Fun stuff, 400 plus HP with power brakes and lap belts :P The to do list is still huge, but will tackle stuff slowly while building the vert on the side :)

Depends on how close you are and if you plan to run any heat shields. The basic answer is yes - you will see damage from heat. Once the surface temp exceeds the cure temp of the resin in the panel - it will soften and then the resin will begin to boil off leaving dry fabric. If the temp gets to close/high you will set the resin on fire. You'll need to use protective wraps or heat shields of some type.

If the original cure of the panel was at room temp, or cured at high temp, or post cured at high temp will tell you what the temp operating range you should protect th surface from.

Re the carbon, you should be fine. Consider F1 cars that are made of carbon and the exhaust run through the bodywork.

but worst case, fab up an stainless heat shield?

If the hood has not had any additional post curing since shipping from Anvil the heat from a regular n/a engine will start to cause distortion.

Gui I think Anodized would be tough on such a large part. You could get blotching.

My powder coater does an almost clear, not quite clear but black. It really pops on polished parts. Similar to what Rushforth does to his rims with the smoke finish. I have been trying to find pictures.

Just info on the above. As the exhaust exits the body work on indy cars (dallara this year) it exits thru a removable/replaceable carbon insert. It's removable because at the end of the race the resin has all burned away and most teams pitch them in the trash. But since they are 700 bucks each, are serialized and have a RF tracking tag installed in the part so you can't replicate them yourself (or sell them cheaply to others) - some teams will attempt to soak the area with resin, vacuum bag the part and refinish the part to be reused. I have no experience with F1 cars in this situation. Not arguing with anyone - just trying to be helpful to the OP. Thx and let us know how it goes !

All high temp clear does is allow the paint to live at higher temps, it does not affect what temp the resin starts to soften.

Garage Dog 65
10-24-2012, 08:55 PM
Resin is dynamically stable up to the temp it is cured at. Above the ‘cure temp’ it will soften the resin and won't hold the fabric in orientation and your part will lose its shape.

Post curing is a secondary process. After the initial cure of the part - it’s placed back in a mold or fixture to be held in its correct position while being ‘post’ cured at an elevated temp – normally a temp higher than the temp it will experience ‘in-service’ when installed on the vehicle.

This effect is limited by the max temp range on the spec sheet of the chosen resin.

Check with your part manufacture and see what temp the part is cured to – or the max in-service temp threshold it will withstand. Beyond that temp you will need shielding or other protection aids.

What do you mean by "post curing"

Hanging the hood, so that it is unstressed by any of its weight, and "baking" it at 200 degrees for several hours is supposed to help keep the carbon fiber ripples to a minimum. This is what Tyler told me while he was at Anvil. throwing it out in the sun, and running it on a car before painting seems to help too. BOS has painted at least four Anvil hoods, and the two that suffered the most distortion were mine and james' hood for the OLC, both of which were painted right out of the box, so to speak. Deanna's 2nd gen has held up better (I think) and Jon drove that car with the hood unpainted for a year. Last but not least is the hood on Gregg's car, which Steve ran on Penny for Optima one year. That hood has a little visible CF weave showing but nothing terribly noticeable unless you get up close.

No idea what a turbo motor would do to an Anvil hood. Maybe ask Larry Callahan. I believe he ended up putting heat shield boots on the turbos.

John510
10-24-2012, 09:16 PM
Ill call Anvil tomorrow and find out the temp they cure their parts at. Thanks for the info guys.

John,

Heat shield on turbos and hood should help with temps. Obvioulsy placement of the turbos will make a big difference. On Max's Mustang, the only issue he had is the heat temporarily deforming his hood, so makes it hard to close if hot until it cools down.

Body and paint are done. It is almost assembled and running. Car would be sold as a completed turn key car.

See Greg Weld's thread for more details.

Houses in my neighborhood are going up by the day. A year ago you could get a 3 bdr/2bth home in Castro Valley for 350K. Now they are 450-500K and climbing. The Bay Area housing market (especially in Castro Valley) is rebounding quite quickly. The cheaper homes go up in value and the higher end ones go down Im noticing.

John, I agree, am noticing the same here as far as housing market (in my neighborhood prices started going up in June and no signs of going down). My buddy was in the same boat, ready to buy a house in Dublin or Pleasanton, and was hoping for prices to go down, and now he is out of the market until things readjust and price drops.

You have already vested so much time and funds (plus stress) on your build and it is coming out great, so sucks to hear about her going.... My suggestion would be to put a feeler post on the for sale area on the maro, and see what kind of offers you get, or be open to a runner plus cash. As mentioned really not the bets time to sell a project as not a lot of people buy rides on the winter and they want to have more liquid disposable funds for other stuff (holidays, holiday bills, property taxes and taxes).

Did you already find a place you are interested in buying?

John, I feel your pain... I got lucky and bought here in Five canyons right at the bottom.. My Brother and sister in law are trying to buy her in the hills or CV and have the same issue, they short sold there place.. and are putting a 150k down.. and still lenders are leary.. I agree with home prices though, They are going through the roof.. good luck..

Even here in Sacramento the market is starting to jump a bit. My girlfriend just bought her first house, we're moving in on Friday and renting out mine. She put in about six offers over asking and kept getting outbid by at least 10k or by someone with cash. The investors with huge money are making it really difficult for the regular people. Plus, the amount of financial records she had to supply was three times what I had to supply when I bought three years ago even though she has a significantly higher income.

Don't sell the car; you will regret it.

Updates are here!

Well after screwing around with the Ozmo manifold the guys at WCAC finally got it to fit. They made a new valley pan to relocate the sensor and front air tube (fuel rails hit both of them). So anyone considering buying one of these take note..... Wont fit your LS3 unless you get a new valley pan CNC'd.

honestly whats holding the car back from being completed soon?

One of the things that i had to stop and rethink is do i need a bad ass intake, carbon fiber inner fenders, and all those expensive things that i could have upgraded in the future. Those little things end up putting you back a few weeks from completion. Plus i like the fact that i want to get my car running and upgrade as I go.

I agree and no rush. heck teh longer it takes to get the car done the more it becomes a classic so that is one way to think about it hehe :)

Thus the reason I have major ADD on my projects and need to get into at least two projects at a time, one that I can get running and enjoying to get my "fix" (no pun intended on the fix part), and the second to be doen as I want it.

Project scope change is a bitch, but as much time as a project takes, as long as you have a set goal and stick to it at the end and you wil be happy with getting what you want at the end.

I think that is a great idea.

With the intake you have you could do two air boxes and have the illusion of tt set up.

After building syborg and doing twin turbo I will most likely do blowers from this point forward. Much easier plumbing, less under hood heat and much more cost effective.

I prefer the look of the stock grill over a billet one

Matt@BOS
12-29-2012, 11:16 AM
My vote is for an original one, unless the billet one is painted/anodized/powdercoated black. You have lots of more modern looking finishes on the car, i.e. all of the carbon, and I think a bright grille would clash with the theme of the car.

Even I'm excited to see your car getting wrapped up!

Matt@BOS
12-29-2012, 02:19 PM
I have 3.5" of space between the passenger side valve cover and the firewall on my Camaro. You should probably ask Blake what he thinks is acceptable and/or what mounts he would use. If he knows of a set of mounts that that do what you want, there is no sense in ordering other ones and having to "experiment," which usually involves time, money, energy and beer if you get frustrated. Just my two cents.

Yep thats correct.
as I said in the other forum on the same question.
We have experemented with moving the engine back 1.75" as I did in my Nova. Here is a list of the issues that needed to be rectified.
Header to Firewall
Steering shaft to Header
Block to rack and pinion fitting
Alternator Low mount CTSV to subframe
Alternator to motot mount.
Bellhousing to firewall, ( i have to remove the subframe to change the clutch)
master cylinder to valvecover (depending on both)
So after all that we decided to keep the engine in the same spot as the BBC and SBC
It makes for an install that the guy at home can do with no issues. I think that is what the majority of customers want rather than the engine moved back 1 to 1.5"

John510
12-29-2012, 02:46 PM
I have 4" between firewall and valve cover. Keep in mind that is not a factory firewall guys.

I have a feeling my engine sits where its supposed to but the modified firewall makes it look like it sits too far forward?

If im going to be opening a can of headaches here then Ill leave it the way it is. Im trying to get my car ready for Pomona here.

I have no idea what you just said..... in that "yep that's correct" as in the motor mounts might be on wrong? Or in "Yep that correct" as in that's the clearance you built into your sub?

All of this kind of stuff is so hard to "judge" just looking at photos.... But it "appears" to have a LOT of bellhousing "exposed".

3.5 inches pass valve cover 4.25 drivers to the firewall. stock Speedtech mounts shoved all the way back on the slots to the frame. Rack, headers, ATS oil pan..everything fits great. there is enough room for the electric fans.

John - went up to WCAC today to check out the cars. They are still plugging away.

Pam and the new girl were working on your carpet and back seats. I gotta tell ya, that headliner is AWESOME! Looks sooo good in person. I love how Pam did it with the stock headliner bows. I think it looks way better then the Marquez style suede headliners. Provides a little more definition.

She also got the package tray and side metal pieces all wrapped in leather. They look great too. You need to have her send you some pics.

Well now that you mention it... that is pretty good. Next time I'll get some pictures for you of them "working on the carpet, wrapping in leather, together". You'd be surprised, they are both cute too... no where near your typical car shop chicks.

Goodguys car show pics. The flash made the suede look a little gray in the picture. Still need to do a bunch of trim work but its getting there. WCAC is freeking amazing. Yes they repainted my roof because the last shop in Petaluma lowered a lift on it and effed it all up. They tried to repaint it so I wouldn't notice but then when the window trims weren't lining up and the paint didn't match we knew something was off. Sanded the roof down and sure enough they filled it with bondo so had to redo the roof again with metal.

Car is wired but waiting for the exhaust to go on before it gets fired. Also working on a custom dual intake setup.

Wouldn't it be nice to see the car drive to the next show in Pleasanton. I believe their is another show this month?

I figure two days max on the exhaust and how long does it take to epoxy two throttle bodies to the intake ports?

The end has to be near. Besides didn't they tell you two weeks after the last show?

Yeah how crazy is that?

At the Pleasanton show I was sitting on the couch in the WCAC booth and this group of 5 20-30 year olds all homied out come walking in and one of them says. "hey isnt that the car we dropped the lift on" and they all start laughing. I just sit there and listen and watch, as one of them leans up against my car, I say, "really, do you mind not leaning on my car"? The kid is all apologetic then they strut away still laughing.

They were a piece of work. I was hoping to hear more about how it happened but they didnt get into it.

Dont worry John, the end is near.

Absolute Customs is a shady shop. One of my coworkers husbands use to work there until he quit after not being paid for 3 moths. Then they stole some of his tools.

Yeah.....I was the one who found the roof damage when I tried to install the upper windshield trim. No way of hiding how far away the roof was away from the molding. That damage could only be fixed properly by removing the headliner....a uni-spotter couldn't move the metal on the edge.

As for the guys laughing...we'll yes it is poor taste to laugh about that but it's not their place to step up and say anything. It all falls on the Owners Shoulders to step forward and own up to the damage.

Hmmm, not being paid for 3 mo.... sounds like a common theme in the Automotive industry in that area.

I can't wait to see your car in November. I'll go on Sunday so I can see it driving. I never realized just how many cars don't actually move under their own power at these shows ....such a shame.

Yeah. He got totally screwed. Lost thousands of dollars in tools.

That shop was a mess. He was there for 6 months, got one check. Was suppose to get commissions on work he brought in but it never happened. He had all the right intentions, they needed a shop Manager and he was good at it. He brought in more than a dozen new jobs but didn't get paid.

Hi John,

Sorry to hear that news for your wife. That really sucks.

The good news is there are some good pediatric hospitals in the Bay Area, especially in the South Bay and on the Peninsula, both aren't a long of a commute from the East Bay. I've known a few nurses that worked independent when times are hard, picking up several shifts a week, usually out of the area, then find something local and permanent later. Hope your wife can keep it going until something permanent comes up close to home.

I can't believe the story about your car. Can anything else over the top happen with that car?
