Chris,
I just finished reading this entire thread and I've got to say what an awesome job you are doing:bow:
Before you started this did you do any welding at all? or did you just jump right in never having done any of this before, buying a welder and everything.
Keep the updates coming:thumbsup:

Thanks for the kind words. To answer your question, I had never even owned a welding machine much less weld. I bought the machine off of Ebay, then rounded up a few scrap pieces of sheetmetal from some builders I know and started practicing on plug welds, then moved into butt welding sheetmetal. Trust me, I don't claim to be a welder.

Hopefully the car doesn't fall apart when I drive it (IF I ever get to finish it!!!).

If there were more SMART people like you - we wouldn't be in the mess this country is in right now. CASH IS KING -- always was -- always will be.

I've tried to teach my kids - if you get $100 - spend half -- SAVE the other half. And I don't mean "save it to spend it" I mean SAVE IT.

It's gonna be real hard not to spend it on the Camaro. I've got to budget a little per month to keep the project inching along.

Got my Stainless Works LS headers in yesterday. I'm used to the old SBC style header flanges that always bent and bolt heads that were right up against the header tubes making it interesting to tighten. These things are very well made. Can't wait to get them mocked up. I was expecting a 2-3 week turnaround and they showed up in 8 working days from time I ordered them.

Yeah. It's sitting under the cover in my new shop. The undercarriage is painted and the car is on the suspension. It's gonna be on hold for a while.

I just closed on my old house last Friday and paid off my land, so I'm officially DEBT FREE!!! We were going to start building a house immediately, but my job is kinda shaky right now, so my wife and I have decided to section off half of my shop and make a 2 bedroom apartment to live in. My goal is to save as much money as possible over the next 3-5 years and hopefully pay cash for our new house. I hate to take on a $150K-$200K mortgage and then lose my job.

Way to go:thumbsup: - just read through your thread- good luck on the build!!

Good stuff man, keep the pics coming. I also like your debt free mentality and behavior. My wife and myself are working on getting debt free ourselves, it's the way to go. Everything I do to my Camaro is paid in cash, so it is taking longer to do things I want, but will be better in long run.

What an amazing thread! I am unfortunately on the up hill side of the same project.

My good friend has been telling me for a long time " it's only metal, if you don't like the way it comes out cut it off or fill it in".

You have th best pics of the Chicane I have seem yet.

Thank you for taking the time you have to post.

Awesome built and really like the color in the rendering.

By the way, what is the backspacing on the front and rear wheels. Are the fronts 18x8s or 9s??

Wow, what a monumentally inspirational thread.

I admire your commitment to doing things right on so many levels, besides just the Camaro.

I am curious if the Chicane write-up for Speedtech ever came to fruition?

Did you relocate the UCA mounts in the course of doing it or just clean up the welds?

I was formerly subscribed anonymously, but after rereading the thread to date I had to drop in and say Keep the Faith! You are doing very well.

PS Some of the best people I ever knew were from Larose, and owned the Telephone Company there. Mr. John and Ms. Clara taught me a l lot about being a good man.

WOW! I'm over a month late on answering this post. Sorry. I haven't been working on the car much, so I rarely get on the site to check this thread. The wheel specs are 18x8's with a 4.9" BS on the front and 18x11.5's with a 5.4" BS on the rear.

Sorry for the delay in answering this one as well. I'm not sure on the write-up for the Chicane install. I wrote a detailed procedure with pictures and sent it to Blake at Speedtech, but I'm not sure where it went from there. It was more of a starting point for them to tweak since nothing was out there on the install. I didn't relocate the mounts, I just cleaned up the factory gorilla welds and then used All Metal filler to kinda smooth it out a little.

I guess I can add a few updates. I've recently bought a 6.0L shortblock, stock F-Body front drive accesories, coil packs, and a Vintage Air kit. I'm concentrating on the engine build right now. I have just about everything except some engine sensors, the cam, and the wiring harness/PCM. I need to get the engine and VA kit installed so I can route the a/c lines and then the engine harness so I can get an idea on how/where to route it.

Sorry no pictures. I'll take some during the engine build.

I'm relly watching what I spend right now on the engine, so does anyone know a good source for the engine harness/PCM/DBW pedal at a jamb up price?

ItDoRun

Alright here's the latest update...the engine

Specs:
Stock LY6 6.0L shortbock
ARP rod bolts
Stock L92 heads (decked .028")
ARP head bolts
Patriot Extreme dual valve springs
Custom cam by Futral Motorsports (228/236, 629/612, 112LSA)
Ported throttle body
F-Body pan (modified by S&P)
F- Body accessories

I still need to get the balancer all the way on.

I painted all the cast aluminum parts (with excetion of the heads and throttle body) so they wouldn't tarnish/stain over time. Should make clean up much easier. I'm ordering the transmission this week along with a few other small parts. The next photos should be of the drive train in the car.

Wow. I almost forgot about this site. Been building a house and just finished it, so we're trying to get settled in. The car hasn't been touched in almost 18 months. I have managed to buy a few parts here and there. I have everything to finish it except the wiring harness and computer which I hope to order within the next few weeks. Once I put it together, I'd like to get it dyno tuned and ready to go before I pull it apart for paint.

My wife and 6 yr. old are on me to get it finished, so I hope to get back on it pretty soon. I'll do a better job of updates now that my life is back to normal and have my own place again.

It's been 13 months since I last posted but the car is moving along. FINALLY heading to the shop this weekend to start body work/paint. I basically have all the parts necessary to reassemble except for seat covers, headliner, etc., so once it's back from paint, it'll be a mad rush to get it assembled for May 2015. Our church has a car show every year during that month and I have a lot of people expecting to see it there.

I remember being inspired by your work on the subframe. My local parts guys looked at me like I asked for methamphetamine when I asked for Allmetal filler. Is there any chance you could give me a manufacturer and product number? The only one I find online is USC, is that the stuff?

Are you concerned about it cracking from chassis flex or has this been proven durable for frames? All help appreciated. Thanks

Glad to see you back at it. Who is doing your paint/body work?

Carl Cobb. He lives in Central and does amazing work. He specializes in building custom street rods. I used to work with him years ago at Dow and learned of his skills back then. He just retired in August and started doing it full time so I timed it just right. He's doing 1 car at a time, so it won't be in paint prison like some.

Yeah, that's it. It's made by USC. Has a silver wrapped can with red and blue graphics. As for the cracking, I'm not sure if it's been proven against creaking or not. I fully welded my seams on the frame so I would expect it not to. If it does, well.....not sure what I'll do at that point. I personally don't think it will. I didn't build it up thick at all, just enough to hide some of the welding.

Thank you. I am trying to keep my welds nice but 40+ year old steel with oily gunk hiding in the seams has thrown me a curve just when I think I am doing alright. I may just try following your path.

Everyone else's Ridetech cap looks more flush than mine did when I mocked it up last Christmas. It looks like it fills the factory recess nicely and ends up pretty flush. Perhaps I just need to bite the bullet, drill and cinch it down to get the full effect?

I put a torch on my seams after i blasted it to try and cook some of the 40 year old gunk that had accumulated. Know anyone with a powder coating oven? You could cook it several times.

I found that gas cap a pain to install because of the filler neck o-ring. Makes for a tight fit but as intended to do.

Thanks. Last week I decided to pull the rear end and have it powder coated because I wasn't pleased with the paint. Got it back yesterday, reassembled the guts and installed it today. Need a driveshaft, brake lines, and fuel line and the underside will be complete.

I love this car! Great build and it will be a perfect street car for your family! Lots of fun memories are just around the bend! Power through the final parts of the build.....you are very close to that first drive in many years!

I just can't see it robbing a lot of power. 4" intake is a 4" intake. Is there something I'm missing?

X2. The Airaid intake system is nice and certainly not robbing any power.

As of now no issues but the car has only ran for maybe 5 minutes total. The lower hose was from Napa and the upper hose was from O'Reilly. I looked for countless hours on the forums for hose part numbers for my particular set up with no luck. I'll get part numbers when I get back home.

I'm about 2-3 weeks from completion! Car is running, was dyno tuned Wednesday, glass is in, just need to finalize some touch up painting, window trim, install the hood, and install the interior. The car ended up exceeding what I thought I could achieve in the beginning. Final assembly photos coming SOON!!!:excited:

Did you find someone local to do the exhaust? I'm not where close to needing but would be nice to know if there is someone around that can do a decent job.

Mark at Walker Muffler. Carl mentioned that you've called him a couple of times. My car is over there now if you want to go check it out.

Thanks! I'm kinda partial to the undercarriage. I learned a lot of fab skills on this portion of the build. Metal replacement, mini tubs, sub frame connectors, the rotisserie I built, and even some bondo work.
