Im at that critical point of trying to find an intercooler that will fit and perform to achieve my horsepower goal. Trying to decide in front of the radiator or in front of the core support. I only have about 3.5 inches of room from my fans to the ls1 pump. It will definately be air to air and hopefully be able to achieve approx 1000hp. Any suggestions or anyone done this on this car that can point me in the right direction?

Figure out your available dimensions and then give an expert a call. I highly recommend Bell Intercoolers; I worked with Gerhard when I designed my intercooler. Very sharp and helpful guy to talk to... and they build nice stuff too.
Here's what you're looking at to support 1000hp or so with minimal pressure drop:

The intercooler will be plenty adequate for the new TT LS2 I'm currently building. It's about 4" taller in core height than Gerhard's recommended "minimum height" but I had the room to go up a bit and he suggested if I had the room to stretch it a bit to add additional efficiency. The core is 27" x 12" x 3".
If you can't fit an adequately sized intercooler you can actually hurt power because it becomes a restriction. You want the largest cross sectional area possible in the charge air direction for minimum pressure drop.

Another vote for Gerhard at Bell Intercoolers. We have 2 - 12x12x3.5's for a twin T61 turbo'd LS2. The intercoolers are rated at 550hp each. The craftsmanship, turnaround and service is excellent!

We use Bell cores for our custom builds. We offer our feedback aswell as take Gerhard's advice to come up with the best intercooler for the application. He's a great guy to share and receive knowledge on this particular subject.
That being stated, we've done one 69 Chevelle twin turbo project that started as an air to air system. We found we couldn't support our hp with the available area and we ran into cooling issues with a smaller Procharger core blocking radiator air flow.
