Okay guys, I've been racking my brains trying to decide on what to get the wife for Christmas. She gave me two ideas, but I hate to just get her what she asked for. I like to surprise her.

I figure we could post some ideas here and help each other out, so I'll start.

15 qt. Magnalite pot and perfume...

Read my lips. Go to the jewelry store! Buy something she does not need and would not normaly buy. Simple as that!

The best way to get ideas is from her. Take her out shopping for everyone else this year. Most men never go and shop with their wives for presents so they never get to see them drool over what they really want. A woman will look at all of the things she would like to have while shopping for others. The trick is to be aware and listening to her while she is shopping. She will say she really likes this or that more times than you ever thought. You have to think like Frank told you and get her the thing she likes but would never buy it for herself. Just going shopping with her is almost a present to most women.

The best one that is mostly unusual is to find a photograghy studio to have a set of pics of you and her and if you have kids ,them too. Women always love to have those family pics for sentimental reasons.

Another tip is to listen to her from the day after xmas to next xmas and when she keeps mentioning something but never buys it you will have the gift she will enjoy the most.

Another thing that really works is to go to the health and beauty store in your area and get her a very nice bath set for her to relax and enjoy some time to herself and smell her favorite fragrance. Aroma thereapy is wonderful.

You can also get her a day at the local spa where she can get anything from a massage to her nails done along with her hair and a restaurant certificate to a nice place for you and her to be together. This will even get you a present too if you are LUCKY !

Best thing is to just pay attention and she will let it slip out between now and then. Women always give hints to just see if you are listening.

Goodluck

She loves home improvement and gardening. Maybe a gift certificate to the local nursery for her spring time flower beds. We've remodeled the entire house over the last 5 years, so no more of that...at least until my Camaro is finished.

I have to agree with Frank. Jewelry is always a winner. I'm not sure what the budget is, but being from SE Louisiana myself... I would suggest something like this. Fleur de Lis Diamond Necklace (http://www.lmfj.com/ItemDetailBrowser.aspx?g=1&c=13&i=28135&pr=0&pg=3)

All joking aside. Gift certificates show little to no thought or effort. And with women it really is more about the hours you spent thinking about the gift then the gift itself. I am on a hard hunt for a $100 item this year. And if I nail it she will know I worked my ass off to get it. I will get her other stuff, but the this $100 item will blow away more expensive stuff I will be buying.

If she is into gardening, get her something ridiculous for gardening she would never buy. A special tool maybe. It does not have to cost a lot, just needs to be something they normally would not buy.

Gift certificates are stocking stuffers and not a real gift like you say Frank, unless of coarse it is for the diamond of her choice

You sound like you are listening very closely

As previously mentioned, you could always pamper her at a day spa. Here are a few from Baton Rouge.

But as mentioned... something that she wants, but would not buy for herself. The thought put into it counts for more than the actual gift itself.

One Valentines Day I made my wife a bath set from scratch. I did a search for the oatmeal bath and an aroma bath salt recipe online. Found every thing I needed around town and then put it in a couple nice glass containers. I hope I'm not sounding all metro but it payed off with great dividends!:woot:

Lot of good advice posted so far.

Yeah, it's the "thoughtful" gift I'm looking for. I've NEVER been good at buying gifts. Keep the thread going, I see some good ideas here.

That's the point, she gets something she likes, we get garage time with our cars. It's a win win. :unibrow:

Its almost imposible to buy a woman the right gift, unless they bought it themselves. So buy something for her, that you will like, a set of tools, new rims for the car, then tell her that these are for her so that the car looks good when you go out for dinner.

I was taught this lesson by my old man who liked to buy my mother fishing rods eventhough she did not fish, but she sure had the nicest fishing rod of all her girlfriends.

Frank's already trying to take my money for a new set of Forgeline's.

It's funny, we were talking about Christmas and she walked by the computer while I was drooling over the new Forgeline wheels. So, I showed her the wheels I'm looking at buying trying to get her opinion. She asked, "Well, how much are they?"...meaning, "I could get you that for Christmas". There's certain things that spouses just don't need to know about when it comes to this car hobby we're addicted to!

Buy her a hot coco machine you cant go wrong for winter with that. It will be something off the wall that she will love and if you want drop some earings in it for an extra surprise.

I second the picture idea... I did that a couple of years ago with my son when he was around 4 years old..... we did the vintage dress up thing and the pix are all sepia etc...when she opened them on Xmas she started to cry..... then she showed it to ALL of her friends, co-workers, neighbors etc etc etc..... all her friends were smacking their husbands and saying "why cant you do stuff like that !!"...

The problem is that once you do a great gift, you have to keep matching or topping it every year and that gets hard..

I've done the jewelry thing but my wife's not hard core into that stuff and since we've been together so long, I've bought just about every variety, so now I start repeating stuff

Buy her a Coach, Louis Vuitton or any other high end purse. Most women don't expect men to buy purses so it's a great surprise:D

The way I read this post was toss up your funny or other wise ideas, lets hear them, we all need a little laughter this time of year.
Put on your funny hats and let it rip.

I think miss pretty should get the second mortgage application for my new garage.

I just asked my wife what she thinks about this (good way for me to figure out what she wants) and her suggestion was to get her one item that she wants, but use the box to wrap a different item, like jewelry. That way it throws her off, but she still gets what she wants.

Hope it helps.

I think Frank has the right idea! Give her something that she doesn't expect or won't buy for herself.

No! Get her a set of custom engraved valve covers that say ItDoRun. If she gets mad or says she doesn't like them, say "FINE! I'll take them, then!"

It's the thought that counts right?

Seriously, check out gifts.com (http://www.gifts.com/). The website has a drill down feature that helps you zero in on ideas that fit her tastes. i.e. Women > Activity & Health >

I think I'll try and find her a necklace and charm with me and my little boy's birth stone in it. Should I add her's in there as well?

We were out shopping yesterday and while it might not be the perfect gift for the wife it is a good gift for anyone on your list who cares about their health and will spend a lot of money and time worrying about it.

Kohls has a UV-C light sanitizer that will kill staph infections and other bacteria, like the ones on your phones ,computers, cutting boards used for cooking and so on.I have seen them used in foreign countries to kill bacteria in water.

They are normally $40 and are now on sale for $20. So if you happen to have a Kohls in your area it's a good deal. If not the company that sells them can be found at
www.markfeldstein.com
they can probably direct you to a place that has them near you.

If your wife is a germophobe she would love you for it !!

I started making a list every year of all the things she sees and wants when she goes shopping throughout the year.....saves me tons of time and now half my family does it too! Start on Dec 26th!

I just woke up and had some good rest and a really good dream and was auto crossing.

If any of you who have a wife that might be wanting to autocross the car you are building or if she might have a really nice Firebird of her own to take lessons from an expert and recently winning autocross champion.

You might consider a really nice pair of leather driving gloves. Good ones are very expensive as far as gloves go but not usually over $100 but they can be if you get 2 pairs.

Finding her right size is also very important.

Frank-ly I wish you luck ;)
