It'll only add another 6 or 7 months and 10K.... at this point... big whoop. :D

Blue is a hair color.... but the blue in the rendering would be bad azz... subtle like a velvet hammer.

I'm with them ^^^ the blue shaded version is awesome. It makes the front fascia deal work, because the whole thing looks like a badass race car - like it should be dicing it up with C6Rs, BMWs, Porsches, and Ferraris in the American LeMans Series - only cleaned up a bit for the street.

The First flare concept (the blue one) looks really kool! I think you should go with that one. It works well with the front end and rockers. Would be my choice.......
Great Project and glad to see it moving again.....

More updates. Remember- I did not choose any of the renderings to base the wide body off of. Ultimately I didn't fall in love with any of them, so we are doing a combo of a stretch with a flare. Think of a combo of the way the SCAR camaro (http://blogs.hotrod.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/67/files/1967-camaro-wins-goodguys-2010-ridetech-street-machine-of-the-year-award/29834086.jpeg) was done with a bit of the Gulf Camaro. (http://www.racehome.com/images/camaros/dynowestcamaro3.jpg)

Here is the car getting mocked up with flares only; we will be cutting the fenders and quarters much more to reduce the flare size and make it have more of a 'designed' look vs 1971 flares. NOTE: These are Photobucket hosted, so if you see a red X the site is blocked or we exceeded bandwidth (not likely.)

Last shot for the paper flares. I was surprised to see how nice the fenders and rear quarters actually were after stripping them down to bare metal. They are so nice I think we should destroy them.

Here it is with the old carbon fiber side skirts with the side exit exhaust port. The new frame will not allow the side exit so I will re-make the side rocker trim to flow better with the new flares and front air dam. Poor shop kid had to lay under that jig and hold them up for this shot.

Don't get too close to Rodger, he will cut you up.

So he started the fender cuts to reduce the flare bubble size and make it appear more subtle.
He stripped the fender and rear 1/4 down to bare metal and sliced it at the 9, 12, and 3 O'clock positions to pull the body line outward.

I asked Rodger to shoot some pics of the rear tires as they looked to be a bit stretched over the rear 18x12.5 HRE wheels. I was supposed to have a 30/65-18 Michelin road race slick with a section width of 320mm on 12x18 wheel. Overall diameter should be 65cm. Looks a bit under that. Fronts should be 24/64-18 and have a section width of 254 mm on an 9.5x18 wheel. Should be overall diameter of 64cm. Those look small as well. I'm guess that if I ever put on real street tires that they will be even wider than these used slicks I purchased. Does anyone know where to find new Michelin race slicks in the above sizes new?

Here's a shot standing on the work bench trying to get both rear tires in view:

http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010010-1.jpg

Looking into from the drivers side of the front window at the pass rear tire:
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010006-1.jpg

Looking from the middle of the tail panel into the trunk at the drivers side rear tire:
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010008-1.jpg

The rear flare progress was made just before the holiday. They welded in a new bent and broke section into the area where they cut the quarter panel (9 and 3 o'clock positions) to re-make a wider creased body line. They ground it smooth and are getting ready to form the flare area.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010026-1.jpg

Same thing, different angle
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010027-1.jpg

Here you can see the old wheel well 'eyebrow' being re-used and in its new position. The rear 1/4 panel has been flared out at the body crease to make the flare a bit smaller. This is looking down the car on the drivers side.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010030.jpg

Same area
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010031.jpg

Again. Notice the flat panel above the wheel well; that is the actual flare before forming on the English wheel.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010032.jpg

Here they have formed the panel that was in flat sheet in the previous shots to create the flare.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010033.jpg

Same area, new angle
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010034.jpg

Last picture for today. They are working on the front flare/body crease and then it will move quickly on the pass side.

The car is getting the widebody treatment because of the trackwidth. If I changed wheels I could run a 10.5 or 11 inch wheel with a 295 or maybe 305 if my springs were stiff enough. There is room to go in another inch and out about 1/2 an inch; I've had the HRE wheels for almost 6 years now, so I'm not going to replace them anytime soon.

Back to our widebody fabrication, already in progress...

Front fender is coming along nicely. Overall it makes it seem like the car is higher than it really is. Once we set it on the ground and get it off the jig I think it will really be impressive looking.

Back to the metal fabrication!

After jzr made the comment about my tiny manhood front tires I had Rodger mock up a rear C5 wheel in my front. Fits fine, but the back spacing was off a bit. I could do a 10.5 or 11 inch wheel it appears and still have clearance; just need to nail the backspacing and offset. If I can get rich soon, I'll get a set of dedicated track wheel in 18x11 and 18x12.5. That will show everyone I mean business.

C5 rear Wagon wheels my car rolled into Ironworks on to check clearance on a wider wheel:
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010002-1.jpg

Alright. So the taller side wall of a street radial looks a bit better than my super cool-whiz-bang- Michelin slicks. Rims are ugly though.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010001-1.jpg

Nearly completed metal work on front flare/widebody treatment. It's almost 4 inches wider per side now. Think about that for a second. Total width of the car is now 7.5 inches wider than factory. Over a half a foot. Damn.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010003-2.jpg

Henry makes it look so simple. New body creases, flared wheel wells, all very nicely done in bare metal.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010004-2.jpg

Just need to finish the last patch panel at the bottom of the flare and fill all the clykos holes.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Project%2050-50/ShopPicsDecember2010005-2.jpg

Rodger was worried about this transition; he wanted to know if I wanted to push the body crease out to meet the eyebrow or have a filler panel fab'd to take up the gap. I voted filler panel.

How much was the engine sent back?

I haven't seen it recently to get and exact measurement, but it is set back at least 8 inches into the firewall. The back of the heads are almost even with the base of the front window.

That's sexy.:unibrow: Have you considered extending the front flare down to your front facia with a small strip similar to the back?

Already in the design process. It will actually be the front air dam splitter/air fence that will extend into the wheel well and add some coverage of the tire. Plans are to have it removable for trailering.

Wow. Very nice.

I'm thinking if you had a chance to view Bob's Iracing stable of specially painted cars and how visible they are from the track when he has spun out and into the bushes you might reconsider. Very visible from on track and very patriotic.

The widebody is wide.

Pass flare is almost done. Needs to be trimmed up to match the width of the drivers side:
http://i53.tinypic.com/9r6s0w.jpg

It's hard to describe what seeing it in person does. The pictures don't convey the widebody aggressiveness of the treatment very well. It's just...Dominating. Evil. It lets you know you are looking at something that would eat you if it could.
http://i55.tinypic.com/fwk5jb.jpg

View from the upper storage area:
http://i51.tinypic.com/1znn410.jpg

It's over a half a foot wider than factory. It's crazy. (The pass side flare still has not been trimmed here to match the drivers, so it looks big.)

Hey all. I'm on a recon mission out of the country, but yes, the car is still at Ironworks.
Lucky for me Rodger has been super awesome to work with, keeping me updated on where it is in the que and being patient with me as life gets in the way of building cars. I'm totally fine with being on the back burner as watching Greg's bubble top is giving me ideas on how to dump more money into it while it is in Rodgers possession.

In the mean time, John McBride and I have been revisiting the body modifications and are working out a new extractor hood and side rocker to match the amazing flares that Ironworks did.

I'm happy with the hood design, but I'm still up in the air with the rockers. What do you guys think?

Hood:

Rocker 3:

Rocker 4:

I'm leaning toward number 2 myself, but I almost feel a combo of 1 and 2 mixed might be the hot ticket.

Car is not dead, but I feel like I am. I've asked Rodger to put me on hold while I work on my newest venture, DeFenderCo.com. During the days I'm the Service Manager of a Mazda dealership in Orange County, and I work 12 hrs days, 6 days a week there. At night and with my spare income I've been doing R&D on my new products for 67-69 Camaros. We are finalized with all prototypes and I've begun making master patterns and saving cash for my first production run, as well as designing a website in my non-existant free time.

So to hold you over, here is a rendering update from John McBride of the car in its proposed race trim, as well as a preview of the soon to launch website for DeFenderCo.com.

Hope everyone here is doing well.

Guess who finally squirreled enough cheddar away to stop paying monthly storage and maybe, juuuuussssst maybe get this thing out of Rodger's shop and back home to my loving garage?

Me.

It was me. That was a good guess. You were right.

All I will say at this point is that Rodger Lee owner of Ironworks Speed and Kustoms is a professional. He has been more patient with me than my own flesh and blood parents. (and they had to suffer through me learning to play the drums in their house as a teenager)

I've taken up an entire section of Rodger's back storage for many years now, decommissioned a chassis table for a decade, and probably caused a few thousand jokes about my car at his expense. Again, he has been nothing but understanding, accommodating, communicative, and a very cool guy when it came to my many stall outs, fund shortages, plan revamps, and career changes.

I'll let Rodger decide if he would like to update this thread to include any build photos. I'll try and check in but these days message forums are very tough to keep up with.

That said, here is 4-5 years worth of dust and rust seeing the light of day once again. The world champion of stalled-never-completed-out-of-my-budget-project-car-from-1999; the 50/50 Camaro.
