As several of you know, I decided recently to move my car to a shop who has more experience and can handle my project. Nothing against the previous small one-man operation that was working on my car, but the progress just wasn't happening. So after almost 2 years I pulled it and this weekend is was move to Gearhead Garage in Sacramento - and a Lateral-G sponsor. The owner Jason and the shop was highly recommended by 2 local guys here on the forum also with 1st gen Camaros (Mazspeed and Mdprovee) and it was important to me to have the car closer to me this time around. I can be at the shop now in 1:15.
See www.gearheadcars.com and check out Jason's killer website.
Also, "Vertigo" has personal meaning to me and motivated me to do a project of this magnitude. Of course I just didn't think it would take 2+ years!
I am stoked to have the car in the new location now and my enthusiasm is now back to where it should be. Here's a couple pics.

I can't express how happy I am for you! I know how bummed you have been with the drawn out project and I'm sure those days are well behind you! Having it close to home will be nice, you can stop by and check things out, and if they have a question you can schedule a visit and make a decision in person...can't beet that!
Keep the updates coming!! Any idea of when the car will be finished?

Thanks Tony. I am so glad both of us are in good hands now!
Timeline depends on how fast I can throw $ at it. So... that could mean January on the fast side, and Feb/March on the slow side. The goal is to have it possibly done for the AutoRama in Sac in early Feb, but if not then, definitely by Good Guys in March.

Good job and good call. Jason is a great guy to work with and it's always important to have the work done locally if possible. CAR is another great choice but further away, but you will like Jason's commitment. I never know you had 69 rear tails on a 68 body.

The 69 tails from Marquez I just had to have, and to my knowledge, I am the only one who has fabbed them into a 68 tail.

I kinda like my feet. But it seems many guys with high power are not running them? And from what I hear the TKO housing is pretty strong. I don't plan on bolting slicks on and doing 5000 rpm launches.
Do these other guys just not like their feet?

There are plenty of guys running around with no fire extinguishers and having sex with strange women without a rubber. :D I just no my own luck with cars...so I just don't take any chances. Whichever fits your application and clutch. Not sure what motor you are running. I hate to spend your money but now is the time to make the decision.

I was pretty close to getting in that Rushforth GP, but I couldn't sell my wheels and didn't want to take a huge loss on them. I like them, I just need to have them finished in exactly what I want.
Agree with Vegas - I like the smoked titanium but don't think it would mess well with my paint color.

To clarify I realize the titanium doesn't fit your paint scheme. I would never promote color clashing on a nearly civilized forum! ;)
I meant to convey the same wheels in a complimentary color to your paint, no darker than the Rushforth titanium.
Or just swap your '68 for one with paint that goes with those Rushforths.

Not to change the subject, but your build must be influencing someone. They've taken a few of your design cues (69 taillights on a 67/8) for a Grumpy Jenkins tribute 67 in the newest issue of Chevy Rumble.

Aha...found it! Look at Jim Johnson's '68 Camaro on the Lat-G homepage. He's running '69 lights, upside-down,on a '68 Camaro. His car is the red one w/flares, sitting in the snow.
You gotta get up real early in the morning to be the 1st to try anything on a 1st gen Camaro. Pretty much EVERYTHING is a variation on a theme. Long ago, we discovered that the wheel was round...we're still trying to make it cooler, sleeker, faster, right? :lateral:

Thanks! Next is dealing with the dash and deciding to continue working on a custom panel, or revert back to the dual-tunnel stock setup, which I actually do like. I guess the previous "fabricator" hacked a good portion of the dash completely out, so it might be easier/cheaper to actually move forward with a custom piece. Cute huh? I need to get up there and see the dash in person so we can decide. I might go up tmrw (actually today).

Yup, my enthusiasm is at a level I don't think I have experienced since starting this over 2 years ago. :)
They are gonna get the motor running without the procharger here soon and get her moving around so exhaust, alignment and stuff can get done while we work on the dash fiasco.
I gotta find me a stock dash panel and apparently this isn't the easiest thing to find! I love paying a bunch just to GO BACK to where I was before the hacking of the dash started.

No, not gonna switch to Forgelines. I just never had Ben change the wheels since they are so close looking to the 5 stars I have on there now.
Yeah, I like the all black version too.. black trim, mirrors, and wheel lips. :)
No pin stripe - I think that is just the leftover shine/polish or sunlight? If I do it I will go all the way and black out the whole wheel - preferably in a matte finish.

My vote is for the top rendering. Keep the polished outer hoops and semi-gloss black the centers, and keep all the trim shinny. Why isn't there a back bumper?
For the record I do like the 3rd rendering a lot! I just feel that the car needs consistancy and that if you are going to black out the exterior wheels and trim...then the under hood and interior needs it too. And that 3rd one screams cage and race style seats like in the rendering! :)
But at the end of the day...this is only my opinion!

All great points Anthony. And ones I have been considering them as well. I just have to find that happy medium between all black and too much shine.
I had thought about one idea of having the exterior theme being all dark and black, and then interior and underhood having some polished and brushed stuff, as you mentioned. Not sure about that though. Thinking it could work maybe... ?
There will be a back bumper. Not sure why it isn't there. Guess it never was there before when we borrowed the basis for this rendering from Penny.
Thanks Anthony. Your opinions I do appreciate.

I guess at this point the hard thing is balancing the final design with parts you have already have. If you were open to changing the seats, steering wheel, adding a cage, and possibly changing a few of the billet parts to black finish...then I say go for it and do the 3rd rendering...it's pretty bad ass! But I know that you are so close to actually driving the car and WAY tired of spending money...so I guess you have to find that balance with what you already have and what you want in the end. There's nothing wrong with your initial design...but it sounds like you want to make a few changes and possibly tuffin up the over all feel of the car?
Aint build/design change a bitch!! :_paranoid

What about taking the shine away with a brushed look? That way you don't have to tear the hinges apart to go black. Can you do a brushed finish on the steering wheel or is it chrome?
Flash68
01-10-2009, 05:52 PM
Yeah I think I can still move to an overall darker/non-shiny theme, which really has been my plan/goal all along. That doesn't mean there can't be ANY shine or chrome though IMO. I am not building a show car winner here. :) Yeah I won't be blacking out anything under the hood. I like the way that is already coming together. Had considered black IC plumbing as we discussed but I think I will keep the industrial theme going there.
I like brushed and I like black. I think at a minimum I will brush the hoops if not doing them in black. One or the other there. After seeing EVS Motors/Ted's updated version of his J2Z 67, I think the chrome trim and blacked theme can be done and work well together. I really like his latest pics he posted and it has helped me see some similarities in what I was already trying to do as well.

What? You miss me? :D
I was in SoCal for 10 days (actually saw Steve Rupp on the freeway one day - recognized his truck and Camaro Performers sticker!) and been kinda out of the hot rod loop for a bit I guess.
Up and down about the car hoping I do not have to sell. Gearhead was working hard to finish some other things for the cars going to the Sac AutoRama, so my car was dormant for a few weeks, which actually worked out okay financially for me.
Just trying to survive man!! :)

Scrapped the original custom gauge panel idea after the angle was way off and unacceptable to me. I have always liked sticking the big Autometer gauges in the stock tunnels anyway, so I am back to that. There will a custom center piece to hold the 5 smaller gauges now too. Pics of that any day now...

We do plan on toning it down for the initial shakedown miles, but it shouldn't need it. Thing put out 700RWHP in the other car- without an intercooler. Should be able to get up to that number again. We were scheduled to fire the motor today and hear some open header thunder, but it was not meant to be. Found out the previous unnamed "builder" (I use that term loosely) did something with the fuel rail and removed the FPR and hacked something up, so Gearhead is working with Holley to send us out a good one within a week. Hopefully fire it up next week. In the meantime, here are a few updated pics of the car. It's starting to like something I can drive!

Thanks Skip. "Serious" was the goal, so glad you think so.
Yeah, it's just funny how I have said many times to Jason @ Gearhead that I am FINALLY done with dealing with the previous builder and the issues caused by or related to him... but his "work" and a missing or shoddy part here and there just keeps creeping up! It's nothing major (yet) but Gearhead is great about going through every nut and bolt of the car to make sure it is up to par and will be mechanically sound, as well just plain safe for me to drive!

What did they do to the regulator/rails?
Jody
Apparently the other guy had removed the FPR (and I believe he kept it) and had modified the rail somehow to use some kind of external regulator. I think he was working on a different plan after calling Aeromotive when I was going to run the A1000 externally. But then I sucked it up and bought the Rick's tank with internal Bosch and was just gonna run it how you and Don had it... I guess Holley is gonna send us a replacement for no cost, which is absolutely sweet!
I cannot recall exactly how the rail was modified or messed up. I have to ask Jason again, or maybe he can chime in here? paging Gearhead..... :D

The passenger side fuel rail on the Holley StealthRam was originally designed to have a fuel pressure regulator attached to it. The regulator is now gone, and the fuel railis crossthreaded where the FPR was previously located. It is an o-ring design, but a pipe thread plug has been forced into the hole making it so it will leak whichever way we choose to go.
Based on the way the engine bay is laid out, we prefer to replace the fuel rail (thanks Holley) so we can run the on rail style regulator. If it the threads weren't so bad, we'd just run an external regulator w/ bypass return back to the tank. Both ways have worked well for us in the past, so I've decided to go with the cleaner setup to keep aesthetics nice and cost down for ol' Dave. Plus, we had already commited to running fuel lines to the rails, and naively assumed that all was in good working order.....fittings & hoses are already built so since the setup fuels Mike P's ProCharged StealthRam with plenty to spare, we should be good here too!
Otherwise, all is good. Hopefully Lady Luck is on our side, and that hideous Murphy's Law and the gremlins from the previous work performed will stay at bay. Planning on blacking out the wheels, building the intercooler piping, exhaust & maybe eliminating the rear bumper over the next weeks or month.....;)

The black looks good Dave.
I also like how Rad Rides did theirs...a little break from real dark wheel centers with lighter color hoops.

I like your thinking Skip. Funny thing is I already know the "formula" they used on that Nova's wheels for color/finish because I inquired about it awhile back. :)
That car is a very nice one to mimic in many ways!

If we powdercoat the other (3) wheels, we can always repowdercoat the outer hoops in a dark grey or something like on the Nova. The wheel has a good sharp transition that would allow for a crisp tape line....

Jason, that's 2 days in a row you've posted on here. Is that a new record for you? :D
We could powdercoat, but that Nova's outer lips are not powdercoated just FYI.... it's brushed and then something special in the clearcoat.

Dave,
It is an interesting look on Notorious' hoops for sure.
As you know, it's the details that set these bad boys apart from one another.
