looks good my friend. I would consider painting the intercooler black to make it disappear, stealthy look that goes with the rest of the car.

True Flash, I'll try to keep my Seinfeldian humor contained to your thread. No need for others to suffer needlessly. :wow:

Well, from here it's looks all healed up... and certainly won't be confused with other '68's.

BTW that bumper delete deal is a fashion statement that works!

Thanks Skip. I think it has some uniqueness to it. Just enough.

flash if you dont mind what is the paint code for the silver? Its not going on a camaro its going on a cobra so im not ripn your paint scheme off:)

thanks boonie

No problem. I don't have the code with me but its BMW sterling gray. Should be easy to find.

Jody

Thanks Jody. Ya know, that's a really good idea that I had not even considered and it does go with the overall theme I am going for. Tough call because I like the industrial look of the aluminum and plumbing but what you're saying makes sense..... :willy:

this gives an idea of the difference. When I bought the car:

http://www.camcojb.com/temp/malitude_2.jpg

and after painting the intercooler black:

I've had several people comment on how they liked the blacked out intercooler; the raw aluminum is cool, but in my opinion distracts from the front end of the car.

Woohoo! Progress!

My only suggestion is I think the car would look better with brushed lips on the wheels... the all-black wheels just disappear IMO. Brushed lips would make them a little more noticeable without drawing too much attention. Either that or whitewalls.

Yeah I had thought about that but I really didn't want the extra contrast (these wheels were black center/polished lips before as a comparison) and was okay with losing some of the detail of the wheels.

Thanks guys. Had a great afternoon driving the car, showing to my dad who is in town visiting, and hanging with the Gearhead guys. Was a nice cool 75 in Sacramento and perfect for cruising. The car saw its first freeway action and hit about 95-100 actual (speedo showing 110). Procharger is not installed (waiting for return from ATI for cleaning/refurb) so power is only in the 450-500hp range probably. Still pretty snappy for low compression and big cam. Tune isn't dialed in either but we just wanted it drivable for now so we could get some street miles on it and check for leaks and any other gremlins. So far so good. She has 29 miles on it total now. I may extend the exhaust past the dumps after the mufflers. Yes, I know many of you told me so. :_paranoid

Can't believe I have somehow missed this thread---I just caught up with all 50 something pages of it---what a killer ride. Love the fact that you put a procharger on it--once you have one, I believe it's impossible to go without--unless you are Jody and get twin TC's.

Great car bro---really great choices all the way around--love the way it sits, love the all black wheels, love the view from the back, love it all.

I'm coming up for Pleasanton show next year (June I believe) and hope that I will get to meet you and see your car in person. Get some more video of it with the Procharger back on it. Which head unit did you go with?

Well overall it was a good Saturday afternoon of some tire-shredding, clutch-break-in driving around the Gearhead shop in Sacramento. Absolutely no traction in 1st, 2nd or 3rd even with the 335 drag radials. I asked Jason if we could move the motor to the back before the end of this week. :D

Just after I gassed her up with some pathetic California 91 octane and prior to getting on the freeway for some 4th gear pulls, an electrical gremlin bit us in the arse. Something likely minor - like a $5 switch or a crimped wire somewhere is the thought as most functions still had power. The guys at the shop did some troubleshooting but it was getting late and we all had to head out, so we packed her up for the weekend and called it a day.

But the 15 street miles I put on her were mostly full throttle 1st thru 3rd pulls. I beat on it pretty hard and that was the intent to try to put it through some hard field testing before we take the road trip to Pleasanton this Friday.

This week we are planning to put in some steering stops and dyno tune, and hopefully extend the exhaust with tails. It is extremely loud, which I do not mind, but the backfiring on deceleration every time I can probably live without. I told Jason I liked backfiring when I was 14 but not now. :woot:

Of course we had planned on taking pics and doing some video toward the end of the cruise but it was cut a little short. It was the best day I have had yet with this car in the 3 year journey, and I can't wait til this weekend to cruise and hang with the guys for the GG show.

You're finally getting to the good part. Take out that three years of waiting on it everytime you drive. :unibrow: It sounds like you're making some serious power. I find the streets around town to be pretty greasy and you won't hook it to well. I like to get out of town off the beaten path to get some real traction. It's more like the drag strip will be. Are you running it down the 1/4?

Yeah tell me about it. And it was a very cool day for Sac (60 degrees) and not that great of roads I was on.

I plan to run it down the 1/4 as soon as it's tuned and the clutch has a few more break-in miles.

Here is the latest report from the shop this afternoon. At least it wasn't worse!

The heads are off and I can't see anything major. Intake was sealed nicely, gasket failed between cyl #3 & 5. Gaskets seemed pretty rusty, and steam ports in the block seem to be causing wear into the head. I will have Don assess it- not too worried. Head looks to be a little warped too.

We can run an MLS gasket if the head & block surface are smooth enough. I am going to have the heads pressure checked to ensure that they are fine.

Also, I never noticed any sign of detonation- plugs look good, no evidence to speak of & Mark (the GM/FAST tuner) never had any concerns in that area yet with the tune.

Yeah there was going to be a bunch of video on Saturday... shoulda done it earlier!

Boost hasn't exceeded 10 psi, which is a little lower than we expected. The same pulley made 14 psi without the intercooler on Don's 69 Camaro prior.

Sweet man...what pulley are you going to run?? Pump gas or race??

Well we are running the smaller pulley for now which used to hit 14psi with no intercooler when Don/Jody were running it in Don's 69. But now it is only seeing 9 or 10psi with my intercooler setup, which concerns me a bit. That's a large boost drop - shouldn't be that big. One of the things I want to try to figure out...

Just pump gas for now I think, but I do want to talk to the tuner about a separate file for race fuel in the future, but maybe after I get a stronger block! :_paranoid

I am back in line now. there are a couple cars ahead of mine but Jason is doing his best to schedule me in. gas and brake lines were the last items installed. Next items will be interior center console and most electrical components hooked up including dash/ac/power windows/alarm/ac etc. peterson oil tank will need to be hook up before we can fire motor. So its getting closer to being finished. Hopefully by Autorama in Feb. 2010. I'll try to make it by Gearhead on thursday.

Simple fix.

Black intercooler.

:D
 the only way to know is hook a boost gauge between the blower and intercooler to see if it reads higher than the one in the intake manifold. I think that blower has an 1/8" npt plug in the outlet housing where you could hook up a mechanical boost gauge temporarily to see. If it shows 14 psi there then the issue is the intercooler or you've got a big boost leak between the intercooler and engine. If it shows the same boost before and after then you've got belt slip issues, which are fairly common with the stock ATI tensioner (though Don never had a single problem with his, which is why we left it alone). SD Performance Concepts makes a much better tensioner for that , it's a direct replacement and I and many others run it instead of the stock ATI one.

That's right I remember you said that now. I will see if these guys can do that tmrw night at the dyno Jody. I have read about the SDPC stuff and it is spendy but looks to be the top shelf ticket for this problem. We'll see if I have belt slippage I guess.

So after the fun and games we head over to the dyno about 5 miles from the Gearhead shop but she is running like total crap, spittin and moanin like an exhaust leak of some kind.... get to the shop and see that the IC piping had moved a bit, knocking a pulley into the upper radiator hose and puncturing it. But the motor also sounds like it is down to 7 cylinders.... so needless to say we decided not to dyno tonite.

Then.... to really cap off my evening.... I get about an hour of the way home from Sacto to SF and right before stopping for some BBQ in Berkeley for some late dinner and a couple beers, my shifter comes detached from the tranny in the Porsche... must be either the linkage or the cable. So I leave it there on the street, walk the block to the BBQ joint, eat and have a beer, then walk 2 miles to BART (the bay area public train) and take that back to the city, then get on MUNI (the dirty-ass public bus) and then walk about a mile back to my place.

Awesome night. I go from first (romping on a procharged pro-touring Camaro) to worst (public trans and then walking home).

I love cars. Not. :willy: ;)

P.S. At least once both my rides were out of commission for the day, I decided to hit the beers hard. Nothing beats drinking some good beers on public transportation. Hey, everyone's doin it! :D

We'll reschedule the Dyno so we can BOTH dyno our cars at the same time- should be good fun!! Perhaps a late night run back to the shop with 'em?

I thought you had enough of our sweet public transportation on the GoodGuys weekend- since yours was tied up inside. Pretty weak story! Don't bang those gears so hard and maybe the shifter will stay attached. Worse yet, I'm sure the shifter handle & repair on the Porsche will cost way more than ANYTHING on the Camaro ;)

I still don't get what's going on with that engine; it was flawless in Dons car, no mechanical issues. Had a tuning issue at one point with intake reversion and the single plane manifold it had, but the StealthRam solved that.

Yeah I am sick of Bart and Muni at this point. Sigh.... Well the shifter linkage might not be cheap, but it should be cheaper than the a blown head gasket and now the work needed on the IC/radiator hose (if we go solid) and getting it back to a full 8 cylinders. Shiat.

No, Don is a good friend of Jody's and Jody built this motor originally for Don's 69 Camaro. It was in PHR several years ago... but when I bought it it had very low miles (less than 1000) and had been taken apart and refreshened/inspected by Jody. I had no question the motor was in great shape.

Well good news update today that the 7 cylinder thing was just a bad spark plug... whew. And the split radiator hose was a minor deal, although we are considering a solid pipe for that since the clearance is pretty tight between the IC piping and the pulley.

Hope to be back on the dyno maybe as early as next week! :woot:

Hey Doug, yes the stupid Porsche was a fairly quick fix. Luckily I found a short-shift kit the next day and picked it up same day. And it was a B&M product, which was on my car when I got it, and apparently this is not that uncommon. Junk I guess.

Have not ran them... they both need to be operating at 100% at the same time in order for that to happen! But as of now I am quite sure the P-car would win any race, due to traction mainly. Once the Camaro is dialed in, and from a roll at say 50-60, it could be interesting.

I have them on my camaro. They hook extremely good. Unbelievable actually.

As far as a race between my Porsche and camaro... I havent had them in the same state yet... but im certain my camaro in low boost would smoke the hell out of my porsche. The porsche has the 24/18g set up and runs a consistent 11.0@132. The Camaro is retarded.. and i've only been running 8 lbs of boost(I would guess 140 trap). But a 60 mph hit on the camaro.. there is no boost lag(V8 helps forsure)... and it covers WAY more ground in a way faster time than the porsche. I can't wait to feel 14lbs in the camaro. I am guessing a trap close or above 160.:_paranoid

I am a Nitto guy already (running 555s front and 555 DR's rear) and looked at the NT05 but they dont come in anything wider than 275 in 18s. Are you running the 335 in 19s I must assume? Heard great things.

I don't have a day "planned" for the track... winter is just about here and the tracks are closed now. But here in my "Michigan" world and car scene... you can't have a fast car with out running it. You'll get haggled something serious.. so i will have to run it this spring.

Real problem is... it only has a 4 point cage.. no chute... no fuel turn off...ect. So i'll probably only get one pass.... even though im good friends with the track manager... and he lets things slide... going more than 150 through the traps will be pushing it. Maybe we will rent the track this spring.

Nope, same pulley but we have an intercooler setup which we figured would result in 2-3 psi drop max, but we are seeing 4-5 psi drop lately. So we are going to check for boost leaks and try to test boost at the procharger on the dyno day and see what the deal is. Something is definitely going on....

My origional hp goal was 600+ (50% gain) and ATI said that I should have no-prob hitting that! And that was after telling them that I was going to use the stock bottom end, stock heads, a Hot Cam, but go to 1.6 rockers....and no IC.

As you know things have kinda changed and now I can through more boost at it. They set the ProCharger up for the 'original plan' so I will have to see what pulley is going to get me where I want to be in the end. I wouldn't mind making a little more power...but I want the car drivable. Time will tell!

Oh I do know how things change. ;) Man you should have no problemo hitting that modest hp goal with your setup. You can still pulley up to achieve approx 15psi with the P1SC or close to it I believe? Should be a nice machine. How much is the LT1 block purported to be good for horsepower-wise?

Nothing is handy right now....my feet are on the desk!

I have no worries....Jody was aiming for way more power with the TT LT1 build. Since Mike worked his magic on the block, it is now a splayed 4-bolt, we went with all forged internals, ARP fasteners, a real blower cam, and Comp valve train the only thing holding it back is the stock unported heads...they may get worked over down the road. But for now I have what I have and it has to work!

Feet on the desk? Hey, it is Saturday night I guess. Don't work too hard. :D

Well it sounds like a stout foundation, but I am a bit surprised you are not touching the heads... here is what I quick found on the stock LT-1 heads so not sure if it is 100% accurate:

the LT1 cylinder head has a 54.0cc combustion chamber 1.94/1.50 valves w/170cc Intake Port volume. The LT4 has a 54.4cc combustion chamer 2.00/1.55 Valves w/195cc Intake Port volume. LT1 heads flow about 212 CFM.

Man, that seems to be a serious restriction in your motor. I am still quite sure you will produce tons of power, but a simple port/polish job on that for $1000 give or take could probably be worth 80-100hp I would think. Those stock flow #s are pretty anemic.

Heads are pretty easy to remove and have work done to especially when compared to the level of car you are building at this point eh? :unibrow:

Then during the non-driving season swap them out. If I choose to do it right now the car will never get finished! :willy:

Yeah I hear ya. I wish I could pony up a little extra coin right now and do a bulletproof block. We all have to compromise at some point on something right? :D

Hey, the car will be badass and can always be made better. Nuff said. :woot:

Yeah I hear ya... or if you aren't hooking up just let out of it and brake til you get that really good pass and give it all its got. :D Knowing the track mgr sure don't hurt!

I'm only running about 10psi now, but this motor and block have seen 14psi when it hit 700rwhp when previously dyno'ed.

I'd really love to crank it up to 20psi. :D

The 383 with D1SC we did in "Rogue Status" @ 14 psi was putting down mid/upper 550 rwhp on our Dyno Jet. Non intercooled. He had some lame run flats on there... so the tires would blow off around 5800 rpm's... so we never got a good full pass. That was on pump gas. Timing was at 32 total. It uses Dart heads (can't remember witch one) and all forged internals.

Actually.. its coming back and we are selling the motor if you know any one.
He wants a stock LS7 or something in it now.

Thanks for understanding!! I'm focused on the things that can't be changed down the road. Heads aren't on that list so we will get to them later.

Enough about my car.............. ;)

Everyone wants a damn LSx these days... :willy: One reason I liked the idea of going gen 1 with the boxy Stealth Ram intake. I just think it looks tough.

D1SC 383 is a nice setup and you probably have a block that can take a lot more power than my 400.

Yeah man, one thing I have started to realize lately is that even though I am driving it (occasionally) and tuning it as we go, we can just keep adding and upgrading and tweaking as we go.... sure, it does cost more money and adds to the endless pit of money being spent, but getting it drivable and able to be enjoyed and shared with friends has been huge these recent weeks and that is what this whole was about when started some light years ago.

Yeah, enough about your car.. this is my thread.

I know, I am just used to having the 10,000 allowed on the other forum I visit daily. And I'm not joking about that number. :D

This is still my favorite forum though. :D

No offense Dave, but I don't see how what they allow you over at 'Hair Club for Men' is relevant to what is allowed here.

If you want to discuss it further pm me.

I've got a couple left.

Yeah Dave. Looks tough and sounds tough. Can't beat the sound of a BBC!!!!:hail:
And I agree with you on the heads for Tony's car. Those will cause some restriction and hurt the numbers on the dyno. Free up the flow and BOOM.

Yeah thanks Tone. Between the exhaust dumps right under me and the whine of the procharger, there is plenty of racket being made with my car. Definitely pointless to have a stereo which is why I went without. :D

Way too funny Skip. My brother years back gave me a birthday card with a free Hair Club consultant card. Hes shorter since that day.

Sorry Dave to crash the posting, everything is looking real good!

I showed my wife this car today and she loves the color combo and black wheels. I am a BIG fan of grey and black but right now I am on my white and black wheel kick. I wish I had more time to really look at this car when I saw it at the GG's show a couple weeks ago. I saw the vid of the drive to the show, I bet it was a very happy drive after all this time and efort put into your car. Congrats

Thanks Nick for the kind words. I really am a gray/black guy. My cars are kinda like old and new twins right now. White and black is pretty sweet too - not enough nice cars are done in white IMO.

Yeah that drive was a long time comin and much fun. Thanks.

Yes.

Apparently that same mass ingestion of Mountain Dew will also get you all the benefits of an altered central nervous system, but without the 'hack' label now attached to Ovaltine proponents.

BTW- I don't have access to that 'new math' like some here, but I had estimated this thread to be 32% humor and 68% Camaro. :unibrow:

Non elective, scissors while he slept. He wore it way spiked back then and jokingly blames his loss of hair 20+ years later on that moment making him shorter at 6'4" Parents were really ticked but boy I laughed my a!! off.
