Hey everyone, got a new project going, its a 69 camaro. I know another one, there like a bad disease, I just cant get past the body style. Anyway with me its about the build, some of you have seen my 67 camaro, it was a basket case that required a lot of my time welding but for me its like therapy and I cant get enough. So I begin another one, this time Im not going to weld any sheetmetal and subject my wife to the grinding/welding mess since I do all my work out of my basement/1 car garage. She's a trooper if you can imagine her white blouses hanging from the plumbing(laundry machines) and me grinding and welding non stop for months right next to them, needless to say I cant subject her to the black hue that fills the air and our noses. This is where Mike Riggs- Mikes custom cars enters the project, He's preparing a new body for me with the dse subframe connectors and we will do DSE's quad link and Full subframe. Frank from Prodigy Customs has been very helpful in getting me many of the needed parts to put it together. The brakes are the new wilwood ws calipers with 14" rotors all the way around, I should have them this week and will install them and update. The subframe is like a piece of jewelry, sometimes I just go down into the shop and just look at it for a while, its a shame that much of it is hidden once in the car. Today I cut metal and welded all afternoon and made a cart out of an old lakewood engine stand. When your tight on room its nice to be able to wheel things around to create room. Anway it was a ton of fun building it, I call it The DSE Subframe Super Cart.

That subframe is beautiful. I really wish the price tag for it fit in my budget.
Did DSE build the rear end for you? Is that their satin or gloss powder coat finish?

Rich,
You have one hell of a suspension and brake combo...what power plant are you going to run?

Thanks Guys- Dse did build the rear and it is the satin finish, although it looks more like a low gloss finish to me, I guess it depends how you define satin.
Going with an LS engine, struggling with choices but Im leaning towards the LS7 maybe an LS3 with a maggy, I want 500/500 at the rear wheels and want it to be extremely driveable/reliable. I really dont want to deal with the dry sump but if I have to so be it. Ive been getting estimates on 427 cuin. Ls engines using the ls7 block and heads/re-sleeved ls2 blocks in a wet sump application but the cost is about the same as an off the shelf GM crate ls7. I really like the idea of keeping the weight low over the nose usiing the alluminum block, should make for a well handling car.

Mike Riggs is the man!!! Your in great hands!!!! Im having Mike do my floor getting ready to send all my QUADRA LINK set up . Going with his 4 3/4 tubs and flat trunk floor.. Let see more pics:thumbsup:

Is the rear Wilwood kit using the W4A Caliper? If so where are you getting the kit, I haven't found a rear 14.25" rear with the W4A?
Everything looks like top notch parts, looks fun!

Man that is AWESOME!!!!:hail:
I want to do the same set-up when I am ready to do my build as well.
LS7 sounds AWESOME, but we all know how expensive they are. A LS3 with the hotcam and some nice KOOKS headers should get you close up there for horses.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thought you guys might like to check out the new Wilwood W6A big brake kit with 14.25" rotors. This may be the first kit installed on a DSE frame, Frank at Prodigy put the kit together and it went together nicely. Im waiting for the left side caliper to complete it, but got the right side done for some pics. We set it up with 14 inch rotors on the rear and the 4 piston superlites, I dont think a W4A kit is available yet, Frank can probably shed some light on that subject. Overall Im very happy with the hardware so far, next stop is some Forglines and toyo r888s, I can't wait to see them, I will keep you posted.

Well the Forgelines arrived today, I'm blown away, they more than meet my expectations, thanks to Frank for giving me a great deal and working out little issues to make these monsters fit. These may be the first blind bolt forgelines from prodigy, Ive been second guessing myself since I ordered them, but when my son and I tore the raper off them we gasped, second guess GONE!

Hey Rich, I probably already mentioned it before, but I think you've got a killer project going. Any idea when you're going to get the body to drop over those those parts?
Have you thought about a 416 cu.in. LS3. We talked with the guys from Turnkey about running that basic setup on ours and they figured it would make around 600/540. Not sure if you'd want more torque, but I figured I'd throw out the suggestion of a stroked LS3.
67ragtp
10-25-2008, 07:33 PM
It shouldn't be too long, Mike at mikes custom cars is building the body, he has progressed alot further than the project section of his web page shows, he's just about ready to shoot paint on the under side of the car. As you know these high end parts are real expensive, so Im saving my pennys for the engine/trans combo. I want 427 cubes would prefer wet sump and 500/500 rear wheel power. The 416 sounds like a good choice as well, Im sure cost will end up compromising exactly what I want, so i have a little time to decide. Right now the goal is to leave mikes shop with a fully painted roller, hopefully before spring.
Thanks Rich

Torch red w/black hockey stripes. Im thinking of having Erik at HKE build me an LS 427 wet sump engine but Im not sure yet, the cost to go 500+hp at the rear wheel with an LS engine is a lot more than most people relize. So its still to be determined, really want to keep the weight over the nose as light as possible and fuel injection, that means Alluminum block- $$$.

Rich I just checked Mike's site, are those bars he welded in for your Saftey belts? If so that is a great Idea.
67ragtp
12-19-2008, 07:09 PM
Yes, it's a low speed harness bar. I've always struggled with the decision to install a roll bar just for the belts and after hearing all the arguments about safety regarding hitting your head on the main hoop, etc.--bla bla bla. I was looking at the inside of the quarter window area and started sketching a brace to attach a cross bar. I knew there would be enough structural material to attach the supports to and the bar comes out exactly where most people would have it if it were attached to a main hoop. So I shot it over to Mike and he really liked the idea and ran with it. It's really just for low speed events, and since the car is 95% street-driven, I figure it will keep me and the wife in the seats in the event of a front-end collision. It certainly makes her feel safe--she hates the fact that my '67 only has lap belts. Mike's welding skills are killer...I really enjoy looking at his work.
To tell you the truth, these types of bars always seem to cause a controversy, so I was reluctant to post pics of it. I like it and think it will serve its intended purpose. If you want to check it out, it's in album 16 or 17 on Mike's site under "Rich Barbara '69 pro-touring".
Thanks, Wayne. I'm glad you liked it.

Well things are starting to move a bit, I pulled the trigger and ordered the LS7 and yes Steve it does have a clutch  . Also took advantage of Katech's sale during February and got the torquer cam/springs and retainers. Its been a learning experiance, since Im not really educated on the newer LS engines. But one that I really enjoyed. The engine came apart almost as soon as it hit my garage floor, Big thanks to Scott Gulbranson for answering my endless questions and helping me out in my times of panic. Speartech is putting together the electronics and Peterson is building the dry sump tank. Headers will probably be 2" Lemons unless I can find something in stainless that fits the DSE chassis well and doesn't cost me 3k. Not sure about an accessory drive system right now. Here's some pics of the motor just out of the crate and then going through the cam install, check out the size of the intake ports on the heads, there huge.

What are you considering for front drive systems? What oil pan and motor mounts will you be using?
67ragtp
03-21-2009, 07:28 PM
Thanks Anthony, Im staying with the stock ls7 dry sump pan its a perfect fit in the DSE subframe using DSE motor mounts.
Im really undecided on the accessories, but doing alot of research on the 066 and 067 stock GM drive systems. One is corvette stuff and the other is cadi cts-v stuff. They really are cost effective, certainly dont look the greatest but they work, perhaps a little powder coating can doll them up a bit. They both use a remote style ps reservoirs mounted fairly close to the pump. I just dont know how difficult it will be to plumb my hydroboost through the big bracket that supports the alt and ps pump. Other than that I do believe they will fit under the hood with no problems. Its also a no AC car so fitting the accessories isn't to much of a problem.
awr68
03-21-2009, 08:30 PM
Souncs good! There's nothing wrong with using GM parts! And yes a little coating can certainly help with the looks...I'm dealing with the same thing as I'm using a stock LT1 bracket on my build.

Starting to make some progress with the drivetrain and thought I would share it with you guys. I installed the engine and TKO 600 in the chassis and fit the new DSE headers. I thought for sure I would be doing surgery on the transmission crossmember, especially since the engine was moved back an inch.Turned out great and fit right in there.
Perhaps you guys can help me out with a drive angle question, the angle finder on the trans shows it going down almost 5 degrees. Should I bring it up by shimming the crossmember plate that the trans mount sits on? Or a thick piece of steel between the trans and mount? What is the ideal angle, Im running the dse 4 link? To be safe place the angle finder on the output shaft and or the balancer to check the angle. I would shim between the trans and crossmember. I will be running a 3 degree down hill angle, but I am running leaf springs. I would call DSE to see what they recommend for angle.

Big thanks to Mike for letting me and my brother invade his shop for a near 10 hour all day thrash, installed the rear and subframe with Mike so we could turn the car into a roller and trailer it home to NJ. Its literally a brand new 69 camaro with lots of DSE goodies. If you want to check out Mikes web site he has 100s of pics up on the sheet metal magic that he does. Thanks. Yes the valve stems did hit, but we corected that a while back. We needed to put a .250 wheel spacer in to clear the big W6A calipers and that moved the wheel out and now its touching the fender. And the rear wheels need go about .250 deeper in. I have close to an inch and quarter on the inside of the rear. I just have to get a hold of Frank to get this straightened out.

Rich, I don't know how often you plan on tracking the car, where it's nice to be able to check tire pressures frequently, but if you're not too concerned, you might want to try a set of flush mount valve stems. I had the same problem and put a set on. They stick out about a 1/4" and don't leak. You do have to take the wheels off to access them though. Just a thought. It seems like it could potentially be much simpler than what you're currently going through to correct the issue. You wouldn't need the spacers or anything.

Matt,
We did switch to the flush mount valve stems, the problem was with a 6.2 back space the inside spokes of the center hit the W caliper body. So we added a 1/4 spacer to move the wheel away from the caliper. Now that brings the wheel out very close to the inside edge of the fender. Im going to check the camber curve to see if that will tilt the wheel in some.
The rears just need to go in about 3/8 - 1/2 inch. Theres 1-1/4 on the back side. The rear is suppose to be 56 inches built by DSE and my quarter panel lips are full(not trimmed). I really dont want to trim them. Im going to measure everything tonight to make sure it was made correctly. I think the rear wheels are also a 6.2 backspace. They sit almost line to line(rubber to lip edge.
What kind of gap do you have in the back of your car?
Thanks Rich

I've got a pretty tight gap on the rear quarters. We had talked about trimming/rolling the lip, but I'm not sure we ever did. If it was trimmed it was just a tiny bit, maybe a 1/4." So far, I don't think I've had any rubbing issues and I beat on it pretty on some parts of the track just to get a feel for the car.

I managed to make some small progress, I found out that Mike used a product called Dyna-spray on the interior floors from dynamat,on the wheel houses and under dash/firewall. Its suppose to be a water base ceramic spray on deal that resists heat and noise and has rust inhibitors. It leaves a nice undercoating type finish. So I spent four nights rolling out the second skin damplifier product in the doors and front part of the quarters, wheelhouses and floors/firewall. Mike already had the roof skin dynamated prior to welding. This should knock the tinny sound down a bit. Its tedious putting that stuff down.

And Installed the Marquez tail light housings, of course being the amateur that I am, I never gave these housings to Mike to fit in the repro tail pan. They were off by a full millimeter to fit in the holes. Luckily my work gives me access to some nice computor controlled mills/bridgeports. The radius's in those things are tougher than you think, but we got it done. I always do things the hard way.

Got a chance to assemble the headlight buckets, DSE lamps, and trim. The parking lights are Marquez, and installed the endura bumper, which I might add was a brutal install. I almost sailed it out in to the street a few times. They fit like crap. I had to cut and modify every bracket. Im not crazy with the fit but I think I will live with it. I dont have to many alternatives, Im trying to get some info on the smoothed bumper from year one but getting no responses. The endura on the car fits low in the center and high on the ends, I guess its not to bad.

I was at a local car show this week end and a guy pulls in with a yellow yenko clone, it had an endura bumper on it and it fit just like mine. Have you ever seen these things fit up perfect? The pic doesn't show it well, its actually the painted edge of the grill isn't at the same level as the bumper between the center and the ends. If I drop the ends then theres a big gap at the ends and they dont fit into the corner pockets. If you guys have this bumper please comment on the fit, this thing beat me up.

Its an aftermarket, Im pretty confused at this point, Ive had people tell me they fit like crap from the factory as well. I guess if your a real talented body guy you could probably re-shape just about anything and make it fit perfect. I just flat out don't have the skills to make this one fit any better. Like Flash911 said reshaping a metal one is an option and since I can weld it may be my only option. I think Im going to move forward, perhaps taking it to some ones shop might also be another way.

I finally got to install this humongus tank, had to cut a huge hole in the inner fender well. I did it with a dremel and composite blades, believe it or not, three blades did the job. Easy to cut curves with out having to take out the monster air tools. here's a few pics.
Ive been trying to find out which port on the ls7 oil pan is the supply(front or rear) and which one is the return. If any of you guys know please let me in on it, I must have searched four different sites and couldn't find anythng. I beilieve the top port on the resivoir is the catch can the next one down is the oil return and the bottom goes to the supply. Just need to know what each one is at the pan.

I made a little more progress, takes forever to do things when you can barely walk around the car. I need my head examined for doing this in these conditions. Ok enough bitch'n. Got the rear bumper bolted up, installed the column, pedal assy and electronic gas pedal , parking brake, installed the rear brake line and had inline tube make me a few lines from some templates I bent up. Im not very good with the flaring tool, so I just bend the lines and send them over to inline, BTW very nice people to work with. Hydratech hydroboost and clutch slave and resivoir are in. I used the autowire classic update harness.

This is the part where things seem to move in slow motion. Im not sure whats worse, wiring a car or hanging a headliner :willy: I found a spot to mount the ECU and bent up a piece of stainless for the inside of the glove box where the back side serves a relay mounting platform. Big thanks to Scott G., the way he did his car has been a real inspiration for how I want mine to look, the glove box and bi level heater/defrost is pretty close to the way he did his. Maybe down the road Ill convert it over to air, not a big fan of AC. Wiring is tough for me, Im trying to keep it neat so Im giving these wire chases a try there pretty nice to work with, self adhesive backing but I used some super weatherstrip adhesive to make sure it doesn't come down. It probably looks amateurish but its an improvement for me. I still have to wire the back of the guage cluster and just relized last night that theres 3 more relays for the ididit column ignition to mount. I got a chance to use my green leaf hole punches for the battery bulk head fittings and the big one for the ecu harness, awesome tools to work with, perfect punched hole and little effort. An old machinest gave me a bunch of them, there pretty old.

The gauge cluster really motivated me. Wired all the guages and bolted it in the car. I cant believe how nice the DSE dash fit, and how structural it feels once bolted up to the dash frame. I think I have over 75 hours invested in wiring, my OCD kicked in while in the dash harness soldering all connections even crimp connectors that go in a connector housing and using two to three pieces of shrink tubing on every joint :willy: . I guess you cant be to safe, I have this rubber strip edgeing that I applied to all sheet metal edges that wires were resting on(I need a wiring detox program). I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel, just have to install the front light harness and maybe the engine will go in next. The engine compartment harness hopefully will be mostly plug in and dress.

Im pretty pumped up tonight, got the engine off the floor and in the car. It really went smooth. Im shocked how much room there is up front, it almost looks like the engine is set back an inch or so, but theres plenty of room in the back as well. Can't wait to get the gear box back from Liberty, I sent it over there about 5 weeks ago, they should be shipping it back to me this week. Ive talked with Paul and Brad a few times. I figured since the TKO 600 is going behind a motor that can turn 6500+ it better shift nice. I have one already in my 67 and its a bit notchy and not so smooth. It will be interesting to compare the two once I get the new car on the road. Its nuts how nice that engine fits in there. Cant wait to get the pipes and RD radiator in.

Got things moving this past week, Sent the trans out to liberty gear 6 weeks ago and finally got it back. They did everything you could possibly do to make this thing shift nice and handle the power and still have full syncros, great people to work with. Once I got the trans installed I started looking at my drive angles, was not happy with 4.1 degrees down. Big thanks to Todd and Greg for helping me understand the geometry. Ended up having to cut the top of the tunnel to lift the tail housing , lots of surgery/welding to get her back together. I believe once this car starts pulling at high rpm it should run out smooth. Also got the alluminum driveshaft from inland empire, those guys are fast, they made the thing in one day and shipped it across the country in 4 days. Installed the dse pipes, I think that was the first time in 35 years of working on cars that I didnt have to lay the pipes in the engine bay then install the engine. They would have fit from the top or the bottom, fantastic not having that big old steering box on the frame rail to get in the way.

Fabbed up an alluminum plate bolted to the tunnel, tapped around the shifter for the lokar boot bezel. You can see the tunnel is lifted 1 inch tapering up to about 2.5 inches up towards the firewall. Any higher and the bell is comming through.

If it helps you guys - here's something about bending HARD lines that you might want to use...
Take your various size lines -- mark a start line - and bend a 90 and do the same for a 45 etc. Use these as templates transferring your bend start line to
your work piece.
It also took me awhile to figure out that you can actually measure where your bend is going to be and to set it up in the bender at the correct notch. Not sure what benders you're using - but mine have 0* R 45* marks on the tool as well as the RADIUS dimension that needs to be used (each tool bends a different radius).
Here is a really handy dandy RIGID instruction sheet showing various steps in making bends and how to use these tools. This happens to show their series 500 bender - but they're all generally used in the same manor. Hope it helps.

So the tubing benders I use are the Rigid 400 Series... and they have these various markings on them for where you need to start your bend - and this depends on where you MEASURED from.... whether you measured from the left of the tube or the right - and if you FLIP the tubing 180* then you need to reverse where you set the mark. SO if you measured from the left and you need to flip the bend then you'd set your mark using the R (right) instead.
Personally -- some times I get so turned around that I have to just stop and regroup!
This is a photo of what I use. Note the bend radius. This has to be subtracted from your measurement. So lets say you're going to need a tube 9" long that is straight line measurement - but it hits the frame and goes 90* at the 9" point --- then your mark would be make at 8 1/16" because if you then set that mark in the bender - your tube is going to come out at the 9" point -- but this is where you get into the "right" - "left" - or "center".
Maybe Mark will jump in here and try to help me out -- cause it gets real confusing and is even worse trying to write it up here in a post!

Not true -- not true at all.... but I will tell you I struggled until I started to actually dig into all the nuances of bending this stuff because I'd really like to not waste so much time and tube!
Personally I HATE plumbing... too many tricks and too many fittings and I just can't seem to keep them all straight (a pun?).
When I did finally realize that some of it isn't just guessing -- it became A LITTLE -- and I mean a little - easier.
I can show you my scrap barrel is full of oops!
My signature shows that tool line... and 67 mentioned the PTFE lines. I have a special saw set up - for cutting braided lines. It doesn't mash the ends of the PTFE - it doesn't melt them - and it cuts the braided part absolutely square and without fraying. The other thing I found that really helps is the have the aluminum jaws for the vice... set up to clamp and hold the fitting ends. And the other tool for the PTFE is a hand operated tool to set the ferrel. Without this stuff -- you're just in for a fight... So it's the tools that make me "smart" not anything else. My problem is - I can't remember I have the tool!

Moving forward slowly, lifting the tunnel took a bit of wind out, but Im getting back on track. Sometimes you really just have to walk away for a little bit. I mocked up all the fuel lines and dry sump lines and got them back from Brown&Miller racing solutions. This is the second time Ive used these guys, although very expensive the lines are near the best in the industry. They now have every cup team as clients, the PTFE liner is really impervious to the fluids we use, and has an extremely high burst pressure all crimped with every fitting you can imagine available. No smell in the garage/shop every one that has ever owned an earls or russels hose knows what Im talking about. The front brake line was re bent and I got brake fluid in the system after bench bleeding the master. Heres a few pics of the lines B&M made for me

Had a bit of a clearance issue with the dry sump fittings being so close to the header tubes, so I got rid of the male theard to male AN12 adapter.

Rich,
the car is coming along very nicely. I just read the whole thread and am wondering about the steam vent mod, what is it? I have never heard of it.
Another piece I am wondering about is the dry sump tank, that is from muscle rodz?
67ragtp
11-27-2010, 11:36 AM
Kevin, Thanks,
Im not an expert on LS engines, but I believe they vent off steam from both head water jackets and plumb it back to the radiator. Instead of bringing a hose all the way back to the radiator I dump it back in to the upper radiator hose at the water pump. It just makes for a cleaner install and not having hoses running all over.
The two small black cylindrical tanks on the drivers side of the core support were fabbed up by Mike(MuscleRodz) one is a power steering reservoir the other is a radiator overflow tank. These were his prototypes, he did a nice job on them and I like the black anodize. Dry sump oil tank in the passenger corner.
Hope this awnsers your questions- Rich

Great to hear from you, the build is coming along good, I should be done under the hood by the end of December. Im waiting for my MAF to show up and complete the cold air intake.
The 67 sounds like a great project, having the paint and body done is half the battle. Hey if want a DSE 3 inch drop leaf set up for the 67, its yours on the cheap. Im jonesin to install a CW g-link set up in the blue 67. Shoot me an email of the car, I would really like to see it. Good luck with it.

I made progress on the air intake and very happy with the way it came out. I purchased the alluminum tubing from spectre polished but ended up scuffing it real good with 600 then etch priming and painting. The MAF housing is from powrmax using the stock ls7 hitachi sensor. According to Scott that location for the air filter is real dirty so he suggested a pre-filter skirt that covers the air filter, got that on order(thanks for the heads up). All I need is a couple low/high note horns and Im ready to put the hood back on. Heres a few pics under the hood with the CAI.

Another quick hijack.......I love My '04 CBR 1000rr even though it's becoming "old" technology. The sad thing is is the price of the Japanese bikes is skyrocketing while the Euro bikes are plateauing or dropping. Made some progress, got the rear window regulators in and door handles/locks. Had to weld the seat back braces in and hopefully wont have to take the Mig torch out again, aint no fun welding with fully painted panels all around. Probably not smart but I covered myself and the welded area with a big blanket to prevent spatter from destroying my paint. After I modded the rear seat I had the guys at Creative auto interiors in Butler NJ cover the frames for me, they did a nice job. I decided Im going to do the headliner myself so I fitted the bows and all the little screws so I can find them once the headliner is hung. Also decided to get new window regulators for the front door glass, hope it helps tighten things up.

My wife really helps me with this stuff, Im a lucky guy, she has a great understanding of fabric/stiched stuff and very helpful. In my area of jersey they are getting a grand to do this, so Im extatic to have saved a bit. Thanks - The headliner is one of those jobs at the bottom of the list, but if you take your time, its not rocket science and it can be very gratifying when done. Im not an expert but here's a few tips my wife and I use. When the headliner comes out of the box its wrinkled beyond belief. place it on your iron board upside down(white side), iron on low heat keep the iron moving in circular motion all wrinkles gone in 10 minutes. place all screws in there holes sticking out a bit so you can find them after its done. Hopefully you marked the holes that the bows came out of, put them back in the same holes. Measure for the center of the headliner and strike a line down it and measure the center of the bows, line all centers up with center of windshield and back glass opening. cut the listing strips about an 1.5 inches from the ends of the bows for them to stick out. Pick up 5 dozen large black binder clips as clamps, stretch, stretch, stretch. front to back, side to side. When all wrinkles are out peel off clamps five or six at a time and paint contact adhesive around perimeter car retainers and the material re-stretch and re clamp. 3M 1357 works well for me has a pretty quick set up time. One more thing vynal does shrink so slight wrinkles will come out with heat, but be very careful as the heat will cause shiny spots if held to long.
Hope the brakes worked out well for you. Thanks again- Rich

Door and quarter window glass is always fun, lots of adjustments, I got it pretty well adjusted, it certainly doesn't fit like the original but it does look nice on a new build. Working from the top down and back to front. So the rear deck and rear seat and door panels are in. Because of the harness bar tab coming through the belt line, I thought it would be a good idea to use a 67 door panel. This way I didn't have to buy/cut in to the 69 rear panels and try to trim it out, we finish painted the belt line all the way around for this reason. A couple of Polk 6x9 speakers in the rear deck and getting ready to trim carpet.

Wayne,
Started fitting the front carpet, looks like there should be enough to fit under the sill plates. Its not a ton of material but should be enough. I have a nice size bubble on the drivers side of the tunnel near the shifter, I need to pick up some carpet double sided tape or glue it down. Once that is pressed up against the tunnel theres another 1/2 inch overlap at the sills. Still have a bit of cutting to do. Think Im gonna get me some Sam Adams Cream Stout(its real good  ) and call it a day.

Thanks- The fit was ok once I relocated all the card board cuttouts with a sharp xacto knife and hot glue gun in the back for the push clips(3/side). The corner radiuses at the bottom of the door are a bit funky, not to difficult to get on, I had to add one extra sheet metal screw to hold the panel from bubbling out. You just have to make sure the big metro seal ends at the top ends are tucked in tight at the top of the panel. I used the Pre-asembled standard front panels from Ricks, you may want to go for the platnum edition for 30 bucks more. On mine across the top surface its a bit wavy, I heard the platnums are stuffed nicer and the pleats look a bit closer to the originals.
Ive probably said it a million times, the repro stuff just sucks athough I guess we should be happy we have it. It all has to be massaged in one way or another. Perhaps its me but it seems like the quality is getting worse. This is a good one, the repro window cranks dont fit on to the repro regulator shaft. Something as simple as a bore diameter they cant get right. You cant just stuff a drill bit in it since there are key ways on each side of the bore, so out comes the die grinder, and once again your cutting metal as well as the splines being a sloppy fit. Enough rant for now, I wish all manufacturing would come back to this country.

Rich, sorry to switch back to the headliner topic.
I can't get the wrinkels out of the last bow at the c-pillar. The rest is perfect but at the c-pillar there is not a real good way to tighten the headliner.
How did you do this?

Just read entire thread, very nice ride!
I was wondering if you could give me some details on your bi level heater/defrost set up? Would like to have defrost and like you not really interested in putting in an ac system. Any info would be great. Thanks

Glad you like it-Thanks - Vintage air bi level heater w/defrost model # 50616. We mounted it in the same location as the old heater box(fire wall opening welded shut/smoothed, controls in the glove box. The defroster ducts that come with the kit are to small get the bigger ones that are used in there air kit for the 69 camaro, cant remember the part numbers. Mounting them can be tricky, I used some killer epoxy to adhere them to the under side of the dash, if the car was nuked this stuff would still be there. hope this helps - Rich.

Almost ready to turn the key. A bit more progress, the exhaust was a big hurdle for me, I ended up with a magnaflow system. Its really tough to beat from a price stand point, all stainless although it is pretty ferrous, it aint no 303/304 SS. I have a feeling its going to be a lot louder than I want, I dont have a prayer in getting the tails past the monkey bars back there so its dumps for now. It would be nice to take it to someone who can bend something nice and tight completely under the frame rails. The windshield and trim went in and I did pull the trigger on those fender supports from DSE.

Hey Wayne, Not to bad, although sometimes you take a couple steps foward and then some back. I was having a tough time bleeding my hyd clutch set up. So I jump in the car while my son is under it getting ready to crack the bleeder open while I pump the pedal. I lay my hand on the steering wheel and the column tilt mechanism decides its going to blow its self out of its detent and ratchet all the way to the top position. Now Im sitting there saying WTF this is a brand new column from one of the best in the industry, I start playing with it and from the middle position to the top it will not lock, just slips out of every position except the two lowest. Im seeing red. Tell my son were done, get out of the shop because sh*t is going to be flying around this place. So I call them and they tell me they had a rash of them go out in late 08, my car was still having the body done while I bought the part, They were very apologetic, although I told her that I would have to sacrifice her first born if I have to rip my whole instrument cluster out to remove the column, luckily for her I did not. They turned it, in 48 hours and another 2 hours of install time and I was back were I started. So getting back to the Hyd clutch, wow, I pumped fluid from the bottom to the top, pedal bled it, and tried the mityvac hand pump and couldnt get the air out. Finally I hooked up my 8 cfm rotary vacuum pump through a huge pickle jar, pulled a serious vacuum and sucked a quart of fluid through the system in a minute or two and its perfect. Finally got to install the DSE rear sway bar and all the E-brake cables are completed. Im so close to firing it, I need a group34/78 red top, nobody has them locally here, I really want to buy it local in case it takes a dump on me. Been reading a lot of mixed reviews on them lately. My battery tray is milled for that exact battery so Im stuck with it. I had great sucess with my red top in my 67 so Im hoping there quality is still good. All the fluids are in the engine now, so it shouldnt be long now. Got my Crow harnesses they are so cool.

Sorry to hear about the column. I can understand your blood pressure going through the roof. I'm glad to hear your getting close. I like the numbers on the fender. I'm on the fence for the ones on the hood. I was thinking of having mine airbrushed on. The car's looking great. I can't wait to hear your first video when its running. Those belts will keep you in your seat for sure!

Well today was to be the first fire up of the ls7, unfortunately the fuel pump(ricks gs340) doesn't want to turn on. The computor is an e38 and when the key goes to the ignition I get 12volts at the pump for 3 seconds then the voltage goes to zero. The problem is while the voltage is present I dont here the pump running. The strange thing is when I bought the battery a week ago, I hooked it up with a dry gas tank, and turned the ignition one click to far and heard the pump growl for a second or two and immediatly shut it off and pulled the pump fuse to check the rest of the electrical system. Now the tank has 12 gallons in it and it dont want to turn on, I cant believe I could have damaged the pump with a momentaty turn on dry. If you guys have any ideas what to check I would appreciate it.
Thanks Rich
