have done a small search but would like to know thet spec for the 2''/4'' wood stands that dse uses in the shop? i see that they are 9 tall but not sure how wide they are if anyone has made a set or know the secs that would be great. and if you have made a set how much wood did you use? just trying to get a idea for cost.

Thanks

Not sure on cost of wood to make but seem to remember they are 12'' long by 12'' wide from what I can recall. They definitely come in handy and we use them often .take care Joe:)

Mine that I built are 12" x 19" x 7 boards high. The 19" width allows my 315 tire to fit well but would go 20" if you want to mock up 335 tires.

And yes it really helps when measuring for rear end widths!

I got all four made today and was not bad at all in cost the wood was 26 and change but i had left over lowes gift cards that was 7 bucks so it was only $19 and the nails were free from my dads work WOOT WOOT. I only have the ones under the front as the rear tires are not on due to harware issues. but all in all not a bad deal for something that you can use on any thing with wheels. and I did go 12'' by 12'' on all fours FYI

My next project, thanks! And to think I was thinking a buying a used Kwiklift for $900 when this accomplishes the same thing with not much more work.

How many nails did you use on each piece of cut 2x4 to fasten them?

First the nails i used are long enought to go threw two boards and parts of the 3rd so i used two nail per board. Seems to be enough for me they are very strong. I would trust my 2500HD truck on these

I put a block of wood between the frame and the jake, just make sure that you watch the other stands so they dont kick out. I did not have a problem but its good to make sure:thumbsup: and they do not move unless you want to knock the car off LOL I thin kthey are better than jack stand IMHO

Looks good but I would spread them out just a little more. I'd be nervous under that car.

I agree with Todd...those look a little tight. Kind of a safety concern in my book.

On another note...those wheels are awesome and I love seeing the brakes popping out.

Built mine 16"s wide for my wider rear tires and they feel really safe aswell, these stands are like a self smack in the head going why didnt i think of that not big on copying anything but these are way to nice and make the job way easier and safer to work on!
Used screws in mine long enough to go through both boards and one in each corner!
Another good use if you noticed they "DSE' put them on there sides and put jack stands on them to support bodies etc!
Its not by accident that DSE is where there at with the quality in there cars its little things like even these stands that is the attention too detail and the pride that goes into eveything they build. You'll find all the great builders be it shops or individuals if they are a very detail oriented person it shows in there cars aswell!

I understand what you are saying but they are built just like to ones dse uses.

Doesn't mean it's right. Simply stating a few more inches would make sure the car would never have a chance of rolling off. My biggest concern would be during jacking.

hahaha what the hell make them "DSE"s idea??? a freaking wood stand is not something you consider a issue of copying anyways...
if you think dse was the first shop/person to think of this you seriously got to be off your rocker.
but i do agree brandon, it looks a little scary, looks much sturdyer like g-bodys 16"

I went to the DSE site and your stands look to be the same size. I still think they look (even the DSE ones) a bit small. Cool though.

How about some more pictures of your car. :)

I'm going to do mine 14" x 16"

We are putting a c5 vette on them first, with 305/35/20 tires.

im hoping to get 20" of clearance so we can do a set of headers on the car.

why not just fab some wheel chocks,or just buy some for that matter, and fasten them to the top of the wood stands? Be much safer.
you could also make 2 sets of stands . 1st set to go to max jack height from floor level and second set to you to your working height and then build a stand to put under the jack to reach the working height. It's double work, double money but easy and safe.......enjoy

These 16"s work great the wheels sit in the Hole just right and not putting any bind on tires! and like i mentioned you can set them on there sides aswell for jack stands etc at least for support.

Yeah its just a basic crib stand. The company I work for has used them for 20 years to stand modular buildings on.

well had enough scrap wood to build 3 out of the 4.. so far, they have cost me not a dime.. Had a bunch of scrap wood left over from my deck from the old railings..

need to buy two more 2 x 4 and a few more nails.

I think I'll turn my boards on edge,,,,,,,, that way all I would need is half the amount of materials! Except I'll need longer nails Hmmmmmm..........

not a good idea. I would think boards on there side could shift and allow car to fall, just doesn't seem that it would be as stable.

I made mine last weekend...

I made mine 15x15 in the rear and 12x15 for the front both 7 boards high. I made a "limit" sticking up on one of the front just as one more little thing to help just in case it rolls.....doubt it will and that piece aint gonna hold much back but I figured what the hell..
I'm going to be doing a 335-35-20 rear and 245-35-19 front.

I had a bunch of small scraps so I put one of them into the gaps...same thing...what the hell...alittle added strength

I'm gonna keep jackstands under there just in case......

Thanks guys.
Yep, Gator skin, 426, 727, all #match. If I remember correctly its only one existing with those options.

The Challenger is not mine, it's my good friends.
He loaded it to me for my Auto-Rama contest. Witch I won!

If you look my stands, they have three step beads on the X-side and another step bead as a outside border, dimbles and pressed donut with dimble in the middle on the other. I left them to bare metal, top and corners welded with tig both side.

66fury, your stands look awesom.

I wish i had that option. I restored my car back in '90 and did it at shop i worked at on weekends.i had no garage . Fast forward 23 yrs ,i had repainted car in 2008, but still bothered me that i never did underside. So over the coarse of a year i scraped , epoxied and raptor lined underside.if i ever do another car it will start by building a rotisserie first ! Love that challenger, my first car was a 70 r/t plum crazy 383 auto p.o.s

SlowProgress

I agonized over buying a rotisserie and finally started looking all over craiglist to buy a used one. Then it hit me that they have really good resale value. I decided I could resell it for within a few hundred dollars of what I paid as long as I keep it in good shape. The one I bought would cost me more to build than what I paid new for it. So, I finally decided to take the plunge. Only downside is that it is so nice that now I am thinking of keeping it :-) But the plus it breaks down in small pieces and will easily store in my shed if I decide to keep it. So there is one more way to look at it I guess !

SlowProgress
10-12-2014, 09:54 AM
Oh and I did build some DSE style stands first thing and I use them all the time. I even stacked them to mock up the tire locations when the car was on the rotisserie.

^ me too!

I'd first build those 2x4 stands with a little twist. I have a little add on so I can raise when I need another 10".

I builded my own rotisserie, made it a kinf HD version, it can be tow'ed with car/truck/ ATV, it has trailer hubs with 13" wheels or it can be pushed too.
http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh569/CeeCeeOy/1965%20Mustang%20project/IMG_1250.jpg (http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/CeeCeeOy/media/1965%20Mustang%20project/IMG_1250.jpg.html)

After this pic was taken, I've shorten the uprights so it will fit inside my enclosed trailer and add'ed an towbar that turn the front wheels at the same time.
http://i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh569/CeeCeeOy/1965%20Mustang%20project/IMG_1251.jpg (http://s1252.photobucket.com/user/CeeCeeOy/media/1965%20Mustang%20project/IMG_1251.jpg.html)
And also the pivetpoint of the car is made from trailer hubs so its easy to turn with one hand and locking wheel to lock the car to almost any position.
