figured i would bring the thread over here, heres the latest progress, got nose torn off today, as well as susp and brakes, will be sandblasting subframe and painting in the days to come, also just cleaning up firewall some and putting fresh paint on it. its great working on an original arizona car, everything comes off!!once sub and firewall is refinished we will be repainting the body in a more modern blue.

Nice thing about this project is that its being built in stages. Bought a nice stocker. Drove it for a while (boring). Upgraded the chassis with Air Ride, Moser, Wilwood, ATS, Forgeline and BFG, drove it for a while (what a difference!). Now it's getting paint and engine/trans. It will be driven for a while before getting an interior.

Are you going to smooth the firewall as well? He should have you make him some of those custom Tri-Y headers for that Big Block. Otherwise have fun with the 2" primary headers hanging under the car. If he wants a testament on how annoying that is feel free to contact me :( some custom Tri-Y's would be $$$ but I think it would be worth it for the customer to have you build him some. When the project is done He'll probably be much happpier. I'd gladly spend $2K for someone to build me a custom set. In the long run it would be so much better not worrying about bottoming your headers out on every bump. Plus it would give you a chance to show off those awesome fabricating skills. Not sure if anyone's ready for that though  you might hurt their feelings when they see a real roll of dimes

hey, can I get a shot and a deal for the Under Construction section of PHR? Good way to pimp your shop :)

Is there a rendering of the "finished car"??

Steve Chryssos
08-01-2007, 11:11 AM
.....Is there a rendering of the "finished car"?? Yeah, the rendering is in my head. You can title the section "How To Stay Out of Jail." Jake says he'll be done with the engine/trans swap and paint job in just a coupla weeks. So no "paint jail" at Jake's Rod Shop. Instead of a rendering, you'll have images of the finished Twist/Air Ride project to go along with the scary looking under construction pix.

The car needs to be ready for the XV Motorsports Track Day.

The original rendering that I had Chris Brown do was a yellow car with a black stripe and RED wheels. Vin was over my house and saw the art hanging on the wall in my den and had to have it. We toned it down some.

Jake, got any pictures up and over the rear with the exhaust?

68protouring454
09-02-2007, 04:47 PM
sure do, clears by say 1/2 when fully lowered not as if he could and or would drive it that low, mufflers isolated and tails hard mounted, got 1 to 1.5 inches off bags and the closest is the pipe to the outlet on the carb version of ricks gas tank, i got exhaust wrap just to make sure. you take stock style tailpipes, cut the vertical so you can clock the over the axle portion to go straight back towards fuel tank, then make a 90 towards outside of car, then another 90 to rear tail panel, basically almost identical to the ones i made to clear the quadralink, of course this works with stock style tubs and non notched frame, his axle is about resting on the frame when fully lowered and the tailpipes are like 1/4 off upper air bar brackets.
these pipes work with stock width fuel tank, you would need narrowed tank but same design would work for mini tub, you just would not go towards outside of car as far

The exhaust is a full custom arrangement made from bits and pieces ordered from Spin Tech. It helps that the Air Ride Air Bar does not utilize a panhard bar. Push button ride height adjustment will also make header clearance more bearable. Headers are off the shelf big tube Hookers.

Excellent work. How does it clear the Shockwave? Seems like this is the worst area of concern.

I do not want to steal the thread, but since people will be looking at exhaust ideas.........Here is what we did on Project EmptyNest. Because it is a mini tub, tail pipes are even more difficult to snake the pipes around the Shockwave and tank. So we went over the suspension. Seems to work out great, and minor fabrication for anyone already in doing tubs.

The tank will sit right between the 2 humps almost lined up even with the vertical trunk trim panel we will install just below the hinges. Were making the tank pretty and exposing part of it through the trim panel. The compressor and other hardware will sit hidden in that compartment also.

Clearance is decent if you don't mini-tub and you run oval pipe. Lots of guys with custom rear suspension choose to run turn downs instead of tailpipes. That was not an option here. Custom tailpies are the only way to go.

Yeah, Vin kicked ass. On his first ever auto-x run, he ran a 29 with anything under 30 seconds being fast for street tires. Then he continuously improved into the 28 second zone.
After all of the runs were complete, we let a few cars do some more laps for the cameras with each car doing a smoke show at the end of the run.

Your car has WAY to much power for that track - kinda like threading a needle from 100 yards out with a rock. Had the course been a bit bigger where you could really use the car and the power it makes - and you'd have been smiling for weeks !

I had the honor of going for a blast in this thing after the autocross event. The car is an absolute animal and sounds killer with that exhaust. I know toning down exhaust is popular in some circles, but I like a nice loud hot rod. Jake did a great job stitching this one together. Fast as hell and handles like it's on rails. awr68
11-19-2007, 06:20 PM
I agree more rubber would look great and a deeper dish looks best IMHO, but a 345 is not going to fit your car unless Jake has gottin rid of the fender lip already. A 335 is a pretty tight fit on a 67-68 camaro, you really need the extra .75" the 69 fender well has. Also, if you have a 245 on the front you have to be concerned with going too wide from a handeling standpoint...go too wide on the rear and the car will push! And I know you like to hit the tracks!!

The car is going back to Jake's Rod Shop this week. He's installing a cage, vintage air, and a mini tub. Should I have the rear narrowed or just more back spacing? Just want to see what some of you guys think.....

yeah, you get a better looking wheel and more centered offset if you narrow the rear and then pick a wheel.

I agree, I'm going to narrow the rear and add the 3" to the lip of the wheel. It will definetly look better. I'm going to with a 335/35 for the rear and probably a 255/35 for the front. I have a 245/40 now.

Narrow and add the width to the outer rim shell.

Vinnie, before you go choping the rear, we need to make sure Forgeline can add 3" to the lip. I will write to Scott tonight and check the build sheet on the wheels to see what size outer lip you have now and make sure you can do the entire widening on the outer rim shell. The outer rim shells only come so wide, it may be that you have to go a half inch in and 2 1/2 inch out, or 1 inch in and 2 inch out. Anyway, I am writing Forgeline now. I will let you know what I find out

Yea, they were originally going to do my wheels in their "premier" lip (the reverse lip deal) but they couldn't get my offset of 6" right because they didn't make a hoop that wide.

I sorta like the old school lip better anyways but Frank is right.. check before you cut.

OK Vinnie, Here is the deal. I thought you already had 3" outer lips, and you do. The widest 18" outer rim shell is a 5", so you will have to run a 5" outer (exteend the outer 2") and change your 6" inner to a 7" inner (adding 1" to the inner making the overall wheel width 12") Which means IN THEROY, the rear needs to be narrowed 2" per side. I will talk to Jake about it before you get started. But I suggest you send the wheels to Foregeline, get them done. I have inner and outer shells reserved for you, it will take about 7 to 10 days total turn around from the time you ship them. Then get the tires / wheels mocked in the wheels wells and measure between the wheel hubs for the exact rear width.
