First time replacing quarters. HELP!!
I don't want to wait 6 months for my shop to do my quarters for me, so I am just going to do them myself.. I am in a welding class at my highschool, so will know how to weld soon..
But how would I go about doing this? Is there any step by step guides for beginners? Everyone has to start someday.. Also what type of welding do I do with this? AKA MIG, TIG etc. |
I'm doing the same right now on my passenger side quarter. The problem is that there's no cookie cutter procedure on how to do it b/c all the repro panels need some form of tweaking and it varies somewhat. Just be careful removing the existing panel noting where all the welds are and set the new panel in and start beating, banging, hammering, grinding, etc. until you get to where it fits like you want it! It doesn't appear to be that bad of a project, but time will tell (for me at least).
What model car are you working on? |
Working on a 70 GTO right now.. Lol this should be fun!! My mom is going to enjoy this ;)
|
Well, those panels may fit better than some of the Camaro panels. I would do a search for GTO's on the site and PM those guys about their cars. Maybe you can find someone who did this same work already and can give you some better direction than me.
Oh, and mig weld the panel. Good Luck and post pictures of the process. You may help someone else out down the road. |
MIG welding is the easiest type of welding right?
Can't wait 'till Saturday!! I just hope I can get it done before the weekend is over.. Also, do you know where I can get some nice weld through primer? Thanks for all the help man.. |
It is for me, b/c that's the only type of welding I've ever done. I would use some of the metal you're removing and use it to practice plug welding before you tackle the "real deal".
I have my thoughts on weld through primer, but someone else chime in, please. It burns away when an arc is struck, so what's the point? Just my $.02. BUT to answer your question, you should be able to get it at any paint shop, and I believe O'Reilly Auto Parts sells it (?????). |
We're going to be posting a quarter panel install video...
We're going to be posting a quarter panel install video on our '65 Chevelle in a few days. There's a ton of tips for clean removal, alignment, and welding the new piece in place. I'll post the link here when it's live.

Update your information with your location. Maybe there is a member closeby who would come by to get you started.

Also, I live it Pearland Tx guys.. Right outside of Houston.. There are a few shops close by, I am not sure what they do, but they have old cars sitting out there, so I will swing by.. Thanks guys. |
This one is more in-depth on the process with some good info that isn't touched on normally. Working to have it up tonight!

Here's the quarter panel install video... it's hard to squeeze 3 days into 10 minutes, but hopefully you can learn a few tricks.

Good Stuff there guys!!!

Am I the only one that can only see half of Kevin?
|
I've just learned that some IE browsers have a little trouble with our new video player. What do you mean by half? LIke the first half, or half the screen?
I recommend FireFox to everyone... it's much better. |
Half of the video screen left to right. I'm on the 64 bit IE 7 with vista. First time I've had that problem though.
|
same here only 1/2
|
Firefox and it worked for me.
|
We made some changes to the video player... it's full-screen now on IE systems, but on some machines it's a slightly smaller screen than normal, but the full-screen option works. It looks like we're going to make some upgrades thanks to whatever Microsoft is up to.

Quarter panel
I have now done one driver quarter and deep tub on a 69 Camaro. Take your time!!! Currently I am doing the other quarter, tail pan, and so on. Not to hard to do. If you plan on doing a mini tub while you have the quarter removed I would recommend bracing the the inside of the car. This is cheap insurance to make sure the car doesn't move. I would use square tube or angle. I cross braced the door, put in a bar going from side to side. If your interested in seeing this let me know and I can take some photos. The last thing you will want is for the car to shift. My car did with the driver side quarter and tub removal. I then had to fix this problem. I was told to put in some braces and I didn't because a lot of what I found on the internet only showed a couple of jack stands. My bracing looks like **** but it is almost like a mini roll cage. Also test fit you panel. Depending on who stamped the panel it may end up being bad. Sometimes they end up being short in the back, front, etc. It will need to be tweaked a little. But you really should not have to weld on a one inch piece of metal to make it long enough. Actually have seen this done. GOOD LUCK. TAKE YOUR TIME.

OK, we got our video player situation handled... sorry for the hassles, but thanks for pointing out the issue.. that helped us fix it!
