Really neat to see all the mods coming through!
|
Awesome work! Can't wait to see the new suspension go it.
|
Thanks guys, this is going to a lot of work and I'm just sick enough to be looking forward to it lol.
|
So not a lot has been going on with the car. I've been getting things lined up in order to make this happen. I picked up a wrecked C5Z and dropped it off to get the frame back in check. This takes care of my fuel system, suspension mount points, some of the firewall, and trans tunnel.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0706.jpg While it's at the body shop I decided on Anvil carbon mirrors. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0705.jpg And then I started seeing if power mirror motors will fit. Going to be tight, but should work. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0704.jpg Last night I did some really rough mock up. And I mean really rough lol http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0702.jpg It's going to be really really close without cutting metal http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0701.jpg Today I built a frame jig that I could use to keep the car mobile, hold it from moving around and be able to mount brackets to help hold the new suspension in place. I still have some more body brackets to attach, but I got the harder stuff stuff done. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0700.jpg |
Mirrors
What are you using for the power mirrors motors and ect...
|
5th gen Camaro mirror motors then I'll just order replacement 2nd gen Camaro mirror glass.

I'd think that someone would offer a 2nd gen style mirror in power by now. |
sooo bad a$$

This is going to be interesting watching this go together. I love the mirrors in Carbon fiber. I hope it works out.

Not much of an update because dismantling a corvette takes time apparently. :superhack:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0712.jpg In other news, Kris Horton got my new update done on Temper 2.0, I'm pretty happy about it. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0710.jpg |
daaaamn thats hot.

Sweet! I love that back end!!

Thanks guys. The more I look at the render and think about how it's going to be when done the more I want to drive it. :drive:
|
Are you planning to do that roof recess detail?

I love the renderings, the color, everything is awesome! I can't wait to see it come together.

Since the front of the first frame was trashed and I needed to increase my wheel base 3.5" I picked another frame. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0210.jpg I got the first frame measured out and rough cut. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0231.jpg We were closed this weekend and I didn't have to work today so Friday evening I set things up for operation. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0269.jpg I got the cut line from the other chassis transferred over and the 3.5" added after a ton of measurements from about 15 different points that are in the same locations on both chassis. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0296.jpg After a lot of cutting, measuring, clamps, tack welds, and more measurements I now have a longer frame that's within 1/16" of square and the new 108" wheel base. Lots more stripping to do before it's ready for the new outer frame rails and to fit up in the Camaro. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0299.jpg |
Looking Sweet AJ. I can't even imagine the measuring it took to get it that close. Nice work.

So I've been working on the corvette frame to get it ready to meet its new home to the point I don't want to cut anymore until I get them side by side so I can make sure all my measurements are correct. This is where the vette frame is at, both "A" pillars are cut off and the toe boards are prepped for a new firewall once it's in the body. Cut off the battery support and some other random stuff that I don't need and is in the way.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0346.jpg I swapped out the frame for the Camaro as they only let me keep one car at a time at work and continued rough cutting and getting stuff ready for fitment. It's a huge pain in the butt because I had a trailer hitch welded in, but I've got most of the trunk floor out. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0400.jpg So the floor boards on a vette frame come in at 53" wide. Add 4" for frame rails and that puts me at 57" wide to try and fit into a Camaro. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0411.jpg With the help of my plasma cutter I removed a good section of the inner rocker and a little bit of the outer rocker. And then measured some more. From my measurements I've found that I can fit a modified 2x4" box tube into the rockers. It will be cut so it's still 2" on the top side, but 1/2" on the bottom side and a new section welded in. While I feel not as strong as the original hydroformed vette frame rails, I'm pretty sure it's stronger than sheet metal rockers, and with the cage, way stronger than a stock '69 Camaro ever was. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0415.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0416.jpg Last on this round of updates is the front view of the rendering. Kris Horton gave me some wheel color options to see how I liked a few that I was thinking about. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0355.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0352.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0356.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0353.jpg And the ones I decided on, smoked clear polished. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0354.jpg Back to work on it tomorrow :superhack: |
The Camaro is going to be bad a$$. Love the rendering.
What part of San Antonio are you in? I'm in Houston, but drive to SA once a month for the weekend. |

Slow but steady progress on the car. Today I finished up the welding and grinding on the second frame rail. I used 2x4" 1/8" square tube and cut the bottom and part of the side and reboxed it in with flat 1/8" strap. This let me use 4" instead of 3" and should be just as strong if not stronger than the factory Corvette frame once it's welded into the factory Corvette frame, what's left of the rockers, and the roll cage.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0518.jpg And a test fit with a test piece. Fits like a glove. I'll also still be able to use the factory style door stills too. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0517.jpgd And more cutting of the old inner rocker. That's what takes the most time, getting everything cut right as to not mess up the stuff I need to save. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0519.jpg |
I for one LOVE THIS THING! This from a guy who is not crazy about a 69 Camaro.
:king: |
AJ I was just reading this and thought back to when you cut the firewall to set the motor back, You've Come A Long Way Baby! Nice Work.
|
Thanks guys.
Wayne, the cars transformed a ton. It seemed like I was taking steps back instead of forward, but I'm much happier with this setup and actually excited to get it done now. |
It's great seeing someone with skills do the Vulcan car-meld. I just wish you'd done this a couple years ago . . .
It's funny how similar the C5 parts/chassis you're showing look to the C4 stuff I chopped the crud out of. In the beginning, it's like yeah, I can use this and this and this, but no. Chop, cut, change materials. Stock (Corvette) floors and firewall are so scary and cheap--talk to a firefighter/rescue person about this. It's the application of new sheetmetal that's a real blast, once you've got that frame in there. Yours will undoubtedly look far less like sight-impaired surgery training than mine. Again, seeing your skills put to work at this is great. You'll undoubtedly like the Corvette car dynamics considerably more than the older-school stuff you removed. Additionally, the idea of replacement parts down the road becomes much simpler . . . Keep at it! |

Thank you for the positive feedback. This was my original build intention, but when I started doing the research on it everyone says it's impossible and talked me out of it. Actually they still kinda do or they say I'll never get it done because it's more involved than anyone thinks. I also plan on keeping the fiberglass/balsa wood floors. The weight and strength win out for me. The firewall will for sure be metal and I already have a few ideas for it. I am intending a fire suppression system though, just in case. As to the handling of the car, I've owned a few vettes and I've driven hundreds of them. So I should get exactly what I'm looking for, modern vette performance with the old school muscle car vibe. Like a wolf in sheep clothing lol. |
Four wheeled awesomeness.
Picking colors is always tough but those red wheels with a white stripe on the body would be Grand Sport killer. |
I got some more cutting done this weekend and then tested the frame rails. I have a little more cutting to do in the trunk then I'm going to send the car out for soda blasting and epoxy while I weld the new frame rails to the vette frame. Any who, the frame rails fit exactly how I thought they would and are exactly the width I needed.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0564.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0566.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0565.jpg |
Wow much more involved than I thought. Very cool - go for it.
|
Nice
Oustanding fab skills there! You gotta love it when a plan comes together, keep it up!

Thanks guys. I'm hoping to get the body finished up on the removal of stuff I don't need on it this week and start on the frame Saturday. I'm thinking about dropping off the body at the soda blaster to get it down to metal and shoot it with epoxy so that's one less thing to worry about.
I also have an engine plan in the works that I just kinda fell into. Not what I wanted, but it will workout just fine. |
After trying to get one of these superchargers from work for months I finally was able to get ahold of one. I'm taking a more budget, although still expensive, friendly approach to my engine.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0599.jpg It lasted about 15 minutes before I had it torn down and started blue printing it for port work and ordered a solid coupler to fix the noise. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0608.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0615.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0616.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0614.jpg So far I have about 3 hours into porting it. I have one bank done and I'm about half done with the other bank. This is the main area that needs all the work. Lots of hogging out done so far. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...IMG_0659_1.jpg Today I got a good start on the frame rails until I ran out of welding wire. The passenger side is in, fish plates from the backside then reformed the vette frame to better fit the new rails. Hopefully I'll be able to get the rear section finished in the next week or so. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...IMG_0674_1.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...o/IMG_0673.jpg I also dropped the car off at the soda blaster. It should be done in about 2 weeks. |
