Jonny it doesn't matter. This country is so in love with Toyota that they could dump a million tons of crude oil into our waterways a year and people would still flock to their showrooms because it's the 'trendy' thing to do.
As long as our media is in love with them....they can weather any storm.

I agree with you 100%!I just think it's funny how this stuff never gets reported in main stream media.

I just love when people buy a new car to save on gas money. Hello, you are not going to save in gas money what it cost you in car payments.
Good article.

I've seen this article (or similar) a couple times. One of my 'Yota driving friends sent this to me.

I would still put my wife and kids in a Hummer rather than giving myself "pat myself on the back" points for saving a couple bucks at the gas station and giving the impression that I'm enlightened enough to care more about the environment that others do. Watch the "Smug" episode on South Park...pretty accurate commentary on the issue.

It may seem akward, but that show is usually correct on the majority of the issues it pokes fun at. The "Smug" craze, as SP calls it, is just that, a craze and a fashion.

My in-laws drive foreign cars. My family never has and never will.
I'm a mechanical engineer and I enjoy my job, I buy American cars because the parts in them were made in AMERICA! (even if the car isn;t most of the time, haha)
Remember, for every 100 workers building a Toyota in America, there are 1000 American workers building the parts in America to go into that Canadian or Mexican built GM car.

even if the counter points are true it takes more energy and pollution to creat a new car rather than say a 64 cutlass (which I own) I wonder how long it will take a prius to overcome the pollution and energy created by having to build the prius. and what about the batteries can they be recycled?
hummers are dumb unless you drive off road alot which according to a study I read along time ago dont quote me on this but the vehicle with highest percentage of owners driving of road was JEEP with something like 7% so why do you need huge 4WD trucks.
Prius are even dumber super ugly really heavy and the self righteous drivers are annoying. Arent diesels alot cheaper and get similar gas mileage?
For all these reason I hope to have a Hybrid stickers on my 64 cutlass as soon as I get the Chevy LQ4 motor in it. that'll show them what a hybrid should be.

I never have understood all the animosity that hybrids (Prius) generate with the Hummer comparisons, reminds me of the Phillip Morris executives quoting studies that tobacco has never been scientifically proven to cause cancer. I owned an Escalades, great car. I'm building a TT big block 69 Camaro as we speak, and I also have a Prius. I guess I'll offset all the damage I'm doing to the environment with the Prius once I get the Camaro finished and drive it instead of the Prius and the Escalade with my 10 mpg and having to replace the back tires every 3500-5000 miles. I'll be supporting all those jobs at Michellin (is that France??!!)

I gues it's the smugness factor that bugs me. I am not a big fan of Japanese imports, mostly due to their restrictive trade agreements, but I did buy my wife a Miata because their was no other choice in the small sports car convertible niche the Miata fills. If the Dodge Demon prototype become real, that may be her next car though. :)
The smugness thing bugs me though. Yes, a hybrid gets great mileage, but... They require a battery that is not enviromentally friendly either to produce or dispose of. They require the use of a lot of copper (strip mined) as well as other metals that aren't enviromentally sound. They also come from a country that dumps most of its garbage in the ocean, and kills more whales, dolphin, sharks, and elephants than any other country. Hey, we aren't always the best either, but when a company is doing something awful, it usually hits the news, not so with the Japanese products.
Anyway, I just wish we had a level playing field. As for the SUV craze, I don't think it would have happend if the Federal Government hadn't placed such restrictive CAFE standards on the car industry. And now, just whne technology is catching up, and they are building larger, more powerfull cars that meet CAFE, the government wants to increase the standards.
Shiny Side Up!
