No way, all our cars are cool in thier own way, you should always be proud of your ride because it's what you've been able to do with the tools/$ you have.
But thanks for the compliment. She came out better than I planned (I guess that's better than the other way around.. lol)

Thanks, If I had to describe my "build style" it would be "OEM".. I wanted the car to have a factory look. Like all the wiz-bang items could've been ordered from the factory that way (ok, a really cool factory). I didn't want to modernize the feel of the car, just the technology.
I can't wait to see the door panels, I think Eric will nail my vision for them.
Are you planning on having posters made up at SEMA?
No time before SEMA. I will have the Wilwood "penny" banner uploaded soon in high res if anyone wants to have a garage banner made. I will also be working to have some sort of poster made of the Warehouse shot. First I need to make sure I have the car as nice and complete as possible for Wilwood.

How are you opening the doors from the inside? Still installing a handle inside?
i see 2 holes in the door panel, 1 for the window crank, the other for the handle?

Making some nice interior progress now!
Less is more with your car. I was worried at one point concerning the interior. This was based on how well the exterior, engine compartment, stance and all was coming along so nicely.
Should of know better...... Looooooking very good....

Call over to Wilwood and ask for Steve Cornelias.. tell him I said it was ok for you to check her out. :) -- PM me if you need my cell phone number.
How did she look driving by?
As stated she is officially back on the road. I drove her about 20 miles from the interior guy to Wilwood where they are going to fine-tune my brakes. About the only "road issue" I had were a few small rattles and such that I need to track down.
Here she is at Wilwood, damn they have a NICE shop!

Congrats on gettting you car finished for the second time.

yes the hood was open and all the wheels were off, this gave me a nice view of all the workings, I think i will upgrade to the larger 4 piston rears like yours and the 13" rear to match my fronts.

Yea, I was.. I kept waiting for some truck to make a bad lane change.. or other disaster to happen. lol
I just need to get my "sea legs" back. I also need to mess with shock settings and do a bunch of "fine tuning".
I stopped at the gas station to put in some fuel (only had 4 gallons in it). I start to put in 91 and then notice the station sells 100 octane. What the hell, I put in 10 gallons of the 100 octane. Not needed but I might as well start off on a good note. lol

How did those R888 feel?
It was an easy ride. The brakes were a bit mushy (why it's at Wilwood) so I didn't want to push my luck.
The R888s felt great. The didn't "hunt" down the ruts in the road at all. I think they might of been a touch noisier than the RA1s. Engine temp never went over 190 and the fuel pressure held steady at 59psi.. so far so good.

Good to see they were working on it, I don't know how much better the fancy rear brakes I have work compared to thier normal 4-piston rear but they look stunning.
I will be happy when it's sitting in the SEMA booth and I have a beer in my hand. :)

$1200 for the four panels. He used a foam in two sections (see previous post) then shaped it. The edges taper in and since the panel is aluminum the whole deal has a very nice fit to it. The pull-tab is attached to the door frame. Oh, and he rivits the window felts to the panels. I'm very happy with his work.
The back panels have the same OEM look.

I had a chance to catch up with the guys at BOS yesterday and got their insight from the show, etc. Sounds like everyone had a great time and that Penny was well received, which is just. Having watched the progression of that car over the last (nearly!!!!!) two years, it's pretty amazing to see just how good it came out. When I first saw it, the original engine was out of is, the old subframe, etc. The body looked really good, and the paint was really nice, but the rest of the car had issues, ranging from insignificant but noticeable, to downright scary. Every one of those issues has been addressed, and the car just got better, and better, and better. Yes, I'm biased having been part of the build to some extent, but I am really impressed, every time I see it now I just say, wow, that thing really came around. Steve worked his butt off managing the build of that car, and of course the rebuild, and he deserves the accolades. I think I speak for all of us that have been watching the build, both in person, as well as over the internet, etc, that it has been a really cool, real world story with terrific results. Congrats, and thanks!

Rupp is a master at sweating the little details. Every part and piece complements the part next to it. As flawless as any show car, Rupp did a flawless job of preserving the car's competition flavor. He knows exactly what he wants. Best of Show's execution is first rate. Motor, trans, chassis--this car will haul ass as good as it looks.

Thanks Mark, If not for you Penny wouldn't exist in her current form since you introduced me to Best Of Show Coachworks and because of the help you provided with tech on your three-link (which was a big hit at SEMA).
I'm glad I did it the right way and didn't half-ass things together. I consider this car a team effort and you're definely part of the team. Thanks!

Thanks... yea, I'm a bit anal.. lol (all the screws on the light switch covers in my house are turned the same way)
I think the key to try and carry the colors and textures throughout the car and not use too many of them.
I had a couple people point at the unattactive slaggy welds on my cage. I had to remind them this was a race car and the cage was built for function only, if it was good enough for a 9-second car then it's good enough for me. lol
I need to fix a bad pulley bearing, get the Xpel put on and then I can start messing with suspension tuning. I also need a GOOD alignment and some scaling, but the hard part is over now.

No, none that I remember. The Goodmark quarter fit just about the same as the OEM quarter. In fact by the time you factor in the price difference and the labor rates the Goodmark deal is, by far, the cheaper way to get to the same place.

Your car is fantastic. Kind of like following Tiger around the golf course and saying good shot after he hits the ball.
I am curious on how the 450 lbs springs work on the front. I have 350's on mine and they feel really good.
Did you end up with 265 on the front and 335 on the rear? What is your front rim width? 9 inches?

Penny really is a gorgeous build Steve ! I love the down-low engine shot. Gonna blow that one up and put it on the wall man.
What finish in on the front upper a arms ? sanded and powered - or sanded and cleared ? PS, you did a great job on colors and metal finish choices. I know you spent a bunch of time on those choices and it really shows. It's always in the details !
Can't wait to hear and see her run the course ! You going to do any performance testing on her like lateral tests or anything ? Just wondering if she will crest the 1 G mark.

Be careful.. Karma can be a biatch! ;)
I am curious on how the 450 lbs springs work on the front. I have 350's on mine and they feel really good.
Did you end up with 265 on the front and 335 on the rear? What is your front rim width? 9 inches?
So far they feel fine.. the car is certainly "stiff" though.
I ended up with 255s on the front. When put next to the 275 RA1s I took off the car they were less than 1/4 inch narrower. The 265s were wider than the old 275s.. go figure.
Eventually I will have the front rims made 1 inch wider (to the inside) and run the 275s.. for now this will do.
Jim
Upper control arms are just smooted (casting lines removed) and then brushed.
Yea, testing is planned. I start tuning the suspension next week. Will keep ya updated.

I got one of the tachs (the digital one) working great but the other one won't go below 1,700 RPM and seems "slow"... gotta call SW on it.
The speedo has been calibrated and works great when the car is in motion. When at idle it gyrates all over the place like it's on crack.. again, time to call SW.
The clear protection is on the car so she's ready for the road. Next week she goes in for a super double-throw-down alignment.
I still have a squeek in the front drive assembley. I doesn't make noise at idle, just under load. I've replaced both the tensioner and idler pullies so it must be the PS, ALT or water pump..
I still need to wire in the Racepak..
Anyways, that's the Penny update.. and for visting the thread here's a bonus shot. This was taken by Mike Harrington of Super Chevy and was one of the candiates for the cover (but it was never used).. was taken up in the mountains.

Now that's a shot!! Love the car Steve!
The car car looks great! I hope to see it in person someday. One question: this may have been covered before, but what headlights are you using?

Very nice car!!!! Looks like you already see the light under the tunnel! Just wanted to tell you that I had the same problem with the speedo on a 69' Camaro Convertible(22x13 wheels on back) that I worked on a while back. Well I could never find the problem although I changed out the speedo and it did the same thing! I did not get to look into it that much cause the car was sold in the process of fixing little things it needed.

I get asked this all the time.. which is funny because I didn't think they were all that special.
Unfortunatly they are one of the few items left from the original car and I don't know.
But, I am going to make it a quest to find out... time to put on the sluth hat..
You could probably shoot a trashcan and make me save it on my computer :D .. Not that the car itself is anything but beautiful. Keep the shots coming!

Hey, can you contact Mclavain about shooting your car or is the weather "done" up there?
Your car is one of my favorite first gens...

I agree with Steve on this choice John. It is cold, but no real snow yet. Your car looks great and there are plenty of good photo shoot spots out by you.

The clear bra is on and the car is aligned to good performance street setting. No reason I can't beat on it now.
I'm hoping we will rent Fontana soon for track testing.. I need to dial in my shocks. We are also getting a set of corner scales at work soon. :)
Just been cruising around town so far... winter's slow.

There just has to be a couple dry parking lots around someplace where you could setup the video camera and record some 'tire adhesion testing' sequences ! We need to hear that LS2 growl !!

How do those R compounds feel on the off ramps?

Well, my digital tach is working great.. love the shift light. The other tach is all wacked out, I think it's defective.
Also, my speedo signal is getting corrupted (I think it's picking up tach sig) so I need to isolate it and coil a ground wire around it. Works when the car is in motion and goes nuts when the car is stopped.
Tires feel amazing.. whole car feels good. I found my chirping noise. It turned out to be my alt bracket. The new bracket is being powdered and that should be on in a week. minor stuff. We are shopping for a vid camera right now in fact. :D

might as well condense all the Penny info into this thread.. from the alignment:
-----------
The guy who did my LS2 tuning recently bought a new alignment rack. This thing is so cool. It can measure bumpsteer, check if the chassis is square to the body and a host of other things. I guess it cost over $50k installed and uses digital cameras on targets. The technology and graphics were stunning.
Anyways, the best news was that my car is perfectly square.. to the hundreth of an inch. :woot:
And even though my car is a bit lower than optimal the bumpsteer is very minimal. Almost none in a rise and very slight to the right on a compression (1 inch each way).
Sorta cool:

My thrust angle was at about 2-degrees so we brought that to around zero. Scott was impressed with how easy the LD three-link was to adjust. We went for a good performance street alignment since that's where the car will spend 90% of its life.
The final specs:
http://picsorban.com/upload/finalspec.jpg
The alignment wasn't cheap but I feel it was worth every penny. The car tracks dead straight, doesn't "hunt" the ruts in the roads and feels great. We also did some computer fine tuning and figured out my front squeek. When I had my alt bracket powdered they coated the nub where the idler rides by accident. I cleaned it off, but not good enough thus causing the pulley to ride at a VERY slight angle. This causes the chirp. I will order up a new brackt tomorrow and just paint the damn thing. lol
I also found out that my car runs out of gas at 1/2 tank on the gauge.. don't ask but I need to adjust the sender. :_paranoid
The rack:

Those hunter alignment machines are awesome and easy to use. We use the same machine and rack at mercedes. I wish we had the clamp on heads instead of the mercedes specific heads so then I can start aligning my cars.
Car looks awesome. That action shot is now my background. This should definitely give my dad the inspiration to build the 69 z/28 he has wanted since he was a senior in high school.

Steve:
I've been following your car for a while now, I kinda figured you'd discover the source of your, "Chirping", noise was located near the rear of your car.
Specifically under your rear wheels during the latter part of an up shift.
Great car.

I use a Sony DCR HC-42 camcorder and a Sony CCD camera. For a mount I use a billet aluminum clamp for 1.5" tubing(mainly goes in my sandrail). the CCD velcros into a mount that is 3m double sided taped onto the mount. holds the camera very steady on my offroad runs at Glamis or the hardpack, rocks and whoops near Barstow.
I bought the CCD and cables etc as a kit from skullcamz off of ebay a couple years ago.

Steve, after years of following this car, ( I even remember following the blue one) I just noticed this. Do you have manual (not power assisted) brakes?

I always run manual brakes, it's just what I prefer. The key is proper sizing of the MC bore.

Fixed the squeek from my front drive today. It was a combination of a bad bracket and a very dry belt. :woot:
She's running good now.
Also, found a radiator cap worthy of our cars.. nice but not all polished and flashy. It's from Billet Specialties and was about $20.

Someone asked me about my fire extinguisher mount. It's just plate alum I had cut to a template at my water jetter. I then drilled the holes, rounded the edges and scuffed it up with a scotchbrite pad. After that I attached the plate for the Safecraft extinguisher. Oh, the "tongue" is offset one inch and was bent down towards the floor just a bit. The extinguisher in this location doesn't interfear with the passenger at all.

Lastly, I had a request for a pic of how my proportioning valve is mounted. Here it is. it's hung off a bracket that is attached to the master and the clutch master hangs off it as well. Makes for one tidy package.
