Got the car stripped down to nothing. Cut out the inner fender wells, rear lower vent scoops, side exhaust holes through the rocker panels, and welded in a brake vent tube. Then I sent off to the media blaster on April 10th, 2006. Supposedly done in 3-5 days.

Got the steering wheel installed.

Then I had to play a little. I installed the Carroll Shelby Signature gauges. (See , I got it up to 4000rpm! hah) Couldn't resist. I didn't mount the instruments, though.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P8150012.jpg

After I got everything installed, I set in it and , lock to lock is only 2 turns!!!!
That is good, however the turning radius sure looks like it could be tighter:

Squeezed out the bonding agent and spread it out. I put the bonding agent on the car and spread it, also.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P8190010.jpg

See how the bonding agent fills the gap very well. The fiberglass does not need to be a perfect fit, just within 1/16". And don't squeeze out all the 8115.

This is the finished product. It has no gaps and needs little or no filler. Photo does not do it justice!

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P8190013.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P8190016.jpg

I prep'd the side scoop area. Whenever I sand down to metal, as a rule of thumb I always use an epoxy primer (not shown) to seal it. Some people will use bondo right on top of bare metal. I believe that you really need a sealing agent to keep the metal from rusting!

So next will be an epoxy primer coat, and then a little feather fill.

Note how I used a little Kitty Hair to fill between the fender flair and the rocker panel.

I dropped the front and rear running gear, and prepared the entire car for undercoating.

I shot the underside with 2 coats of Lizard Skin Sound Control and 2 coats of Lizard Skin Ceramic Heat Insulation.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9010002.jpg

Pictures are washed out. It is a little black, but very flat in color.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9010007.jpg

This is more how it really looks.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9010008.jpg

I went ahead and shot one more coat of a product called Total Control. It is a glossier black, and has an orange peel finish. I went ahead and shot the engine compartment with this and I like how it turned out.

I replaced the U&LCA's, spindles, brakes, tires, R&P, and coilover rear end tonight. All in about 3 hours.

Putting the car back together after the undercoating. I have got many thing accomplished.

Installed the exhaust system. Putting the exhaust through the rear torque boxes is a challenge. It took me 1 1/2 days to finish.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9140006.jpg

Muffler is only tacked on inlet side at this point.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9140008.jpg

With a little ingenuity you can size down the hole in the rocker to only this small access hole for the exhaust tip clamp.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9140007.jpg

Welded in the drive shaft safety loop.

Installing the rear lights need a lot of attention and time. I mounted the studs to the rings with loctite red. Made sure everything fits right. Lenses go in from the inside. I had to cut some more of the tail panel. But it looks good. Cant see it from this picture though.

I installed the trunk carpet. Good scissors and the right carpet make for a fine fit. I got the carpet from UP. It is thin enough to be mold-able.

Then I installed the fuel cell and the nitrous bottle bracket.

And I have completed 90% of the Painless Wiring 14 circuit system for the Mustang. I am pleased with the kit. Very easy. I just wished it had more than 1 extra relay. I will use it for the electric windows. I will have to add 6 extra circuits for the high amp items like High Beams, Low Beams, Driving Lights, A/C Cooling Fan and Clutch, the Electric Radiator fan and the fuel pump.

Here is the UP taillight sequential wiring harness. I liked how it eliminated all the cutting and crimping. It connects to the PIAA back up lights (connectors already there). You only have four wires to hook up and a ground. You will have to put on your own connector to the rear harness. I just cut off a four wire connector from the old harness and spliced it on to the new one.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9240002.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9240003.jpg

This is the dash wiring. Believe it or not it is almost finished. Only the radio wiring, one glove box wire needing to be capped, connecting the driving lights to a switch, and connecting one "Old Air" orange wire to a switched hot. What worked: the Painless kit fit very well. What didn't work: only one extra interior circuit, GM column wires had to be cut and spliced with the provided connector.

And if you are really counting, I have yet to install the wiring for the console. It will have the power window switches (Jegs $149), couple of gauges (probably boost and oil temp), and of course the nitrous switch.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9240004.jpg

I decided to hide the wiring as much as possible. I routed the wires out to the drivers fender,

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9240010.jpg

Up under the wheel well, (the bolts are #8 x 1/2" self tapping screws and will be ground off, then hidden by the fenders)

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9240007.jpg

This is not a finished project at this point. I am going wire tie it up better and use wire loom to protect the wires. This is where I am building my relays and fuse block for the major current draw items. (High Beams, Low Beams, Driving Lights, Fuel Pump, A/C Radiator Fan-A/C Clutch, and Engine Electric Radiator Fans. Note the detail. Every place there is a chance for scuffing, I have installed a rubber insulator.

I installed the battery box and mounted it to the frame to comply with NHRA rules. I also cut through the bottom of the battery box, insulated the holes and run the cables out the bottom of the box so you cannot see any wires.
The protective covering has been left in place for now.

I just completed the front and rear brake line and master cylinder. I went to our local O'Reilly Auto Parts and used their free double flaring tool. I needed three reducers from the Baer Brakes to the Ford lines (2 front, 1 rear).

This is the rear:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9270001.jpg

I also needed two straight connectors one for the rear and one for passenger side.

Passenger side:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9270003.jpg

I spent a lot of time bending the factory lines to make a neat installation. The 3/16" tube clamps and an #8 x 1/2" self tapping screw made it easier.

I used Russell Black AN 8 supply line and Russell Black AN 6 return line. Two 45's coming out of the tank:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9270009.jpg

You can barely see the Aeromotive 10 micron fuel filter that I added with 2 90's:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9270011.jpg

Then I run all the lines and battery cable to the front:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9270012.jpg

I used a lot of clamps to keep things straight and neat.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9270015.jpg

Routed them through the transmission mounting area. They will get a rubber insulator and a heat shield.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/P9270017.jpg

Ended up at the A/C area for the fuel lines. The battery cable of course went through the passenger shock tower hole to the starter relay.

I designed a relay panel to be hidden under the old battery box. 6 relays - PIAA driving lights, Optional (Stereo Amp), Fuel Pump, High Beams, Low beams, Fog Lamps (PIAA).

Just a note on wiring, I am using the parking/running lights to power the low beams. That way they are on all the time when the switch is pulled. The original mustang wiring turns off the low beams when the highs are on. I will use the low beam circuit to power the fog lamp circuit, and interrupt it with a switch (probably out of the dimmer switch). You usually never use the fog lamps with the high beams on.

Well I got a surprise. The parking lights do NOT stay on when switch is pulled out to the second position. So... I now have low beams ALL the time the car is started. I don't mind. But all the lights up front and in back work. Those sequential rear turn signals are trick!!

I finished the front wiring. That box below the solenoid is a 50 amp fuse for the mustang main harness. I put wire loom from the starter solenoid...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA020010.jpg

down through the passenger fender area where the relay panel is (the relay panel will get a splash shield) ...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA020002-1.jpg

down under the radiator area (I even wired it for the electric fan underneath in the middle)...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA020003.jpg

up to the driver side front (BTW, THAT fan is coming off for good, don't need it anymore)...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA020005.jpg

and under the driver side fender. That set of wires hanging down will get wire loom and then routed inside at that point. Some get hooked up to the coil that mounts on the inside of the shock tower, and the others go to the engine.

Finishing up the wiring (except for the gauges and center console), I checked all the relays and circuits. Horn works, high beams, low beams, fog lights, A/C works (blower 3 speeds and electrical to the switch on the pressure side of the cooler for the compressor clutch), back up lights (with the trans circuit bypassed), starter solenoid (with the neutral switch bypassed), all blinker, interior lights, dome, trunk light (it is always hot, I need a switch and light), fuel pump, and optional relay to stereo amp!

I started work on the gauge cluster. I installed the windshield wiper switch (no new replacement, had to use the old one)

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA040004.jpg

and I will post a schematic of the new Shelby gauge cluster wiring that has to be cut off and adapted to the new Painless harness tomorrow (circuit, Shelby color, painless color). Here is a start

All this work allowed me to start the dash. Everything needs to be installed in this order.

I installed the dash pad from dashesdirect.com and it is very high quality . Fit is excellent, I only had to cut two little pieces off the upper ends (by the windshield) with a pair of scissors to make it fit correctly. This piece makes the inside look better than original!

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA070007.jpg

I installed the Hydraulic Clutch Master today. But I had to make some modifications to the input shaft and the stock mustang adjustable brake push rod. The stock Mustang push rod adjuster is a bigger diameter/thread than the input shaft coming out of the master cylinder. And the input shaft is too long.

So, in the picture you can see how much I had to cut out of the Clutch master input shaft. How did I know how much to cut off? Fit, measure and mark. And I had to weld on a nut to the end of stock mustang push rod. And putting on that fluid reservoir was a PITA. The O'ring did not want to stay in the groove. I had to heat the plastic resevoir up with a heat gun, and work it many times to get it on without the O'ring slipping out of place. Just one more thing that takes time and patients.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA080002.jpg

Now everything fits. BTW, that nut you see is a lock nut.

I started fitting the rear seat. If you tubbed the rear end, you must cut the rear seat. The best way to preserve the hinge mounts and end of the first fold is to cut it in the middle. Yeah, that's right. Two cuts. And then weld it together. My fenders measured only 39" clearance and the panel was 41". It now fits pretty good.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/PA080005.jpg

And I had to remove the floor mounting brackets and re-weld them in by 1" each side.

Edit: I wish that I would have cut the panel off to one side or the other so the mounting holes in the new chrome pieces would line up. But I can alway just drill new mounting holes in the old metal for the one side of the chrome.

I purchased a 1 5/8" holes saw to cut the holes for the new interior lamps. Let me tell you, it was not an easy task installing them. I used a rat tail file to remove all the extra plastic, crimped the new light holder tabs down, and still had a difficult time installing them. I think that 1 3/4" would have been too big a hole. I also used a die grinder to cut out the hole for the roll bar.

Bad picture, but I mounted the FE motor mounts. Not sure if it is correct because the motor mounts did not bolt in without a lot of adjustments. The frame holes did not align. Well, I'm back after several months at work. I brought all the glass out of the garage, washed it down, cleaned it real good to see If I am going to be able to use it. It is all Carlite - Sun X tint, looks to be original with date code and line going down the back glass. Not that it really matters to me.

The back glass is in excellent shape. The drivers door has a few small scratches, not deep, but I bet it will be more visible at night in the lights. I am still debating whether or not to replace the door glass, but I bet I will not be able to get the same tint!

I have all the triangle rubber pieces and channel felt for the vent wings. New latch handles, also.

NAPA Pro Stone Guard says it will "Match OEM Panel Texture". Looks very close. But you have to be about 24"-36" away from the panel when applying it.

Since the texture is white, I used a semi flat BBQ paint that looks very close to the normal color of stock panels! Not nearly as shiny as the other "Hammered" paint I was trying.

New rubber inside, on the front door edge, and new felt lines the window channel. The only special tools need to repair these items is a narrow rivet gun, and a small punch (I used a small drill bit) to drive out the roll pin to replace the wing locks.

Cam,

I bought the Optima Battery and put it in the brackets.

My dilemma is.. should I mount it with the side mount cables hidden (to the passenger side) or have them visible from the inside?

How about facing rear and closer to the back so they are not that visible?

Here is the official dyno results. It is set at 10 lbs boost, and 38 degrees timing. The EFI is pulling out 1 degree of timing for every pound of boost. That will kill some horsepower, but I could add a switch and have a second tuning table for a higher octane gas. That is for when I REALLY need some get up and go! :captain:

You guys think I need NOS? :wow:

I took the door glass to have it installed to a local glass company who gave me a good price. When I arrived with the glass and the frames with the old glass already removed, they agreed on the price of $20 for each piece. I talked with the installer and asked him to protect the pieces as this is an old car. The installer said "That is off of and old Mustang, isn't it?"

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/GlassInstalled3.jpg

I left there impressed and felt assured that everything was OK. You could image how I felt the next day when I called and they said that he had broken one of the pieces. He broke the lower swivel pin off the driver side vent window.

Long story short, they offered me a $20 refund at their main office. I was asking them to pay for a replacement piece. While giving me the refund the lady said "You got a good price!" Then it hit me. The old saying of "You will remember the poor quality long after the low price is forgotten."

I fixed it with Silver solder, flux and buffing. Tried to break it back off. That thing is not going anywhere. I will finish the glass install myself.

Then I installed the bell Housing without the clutch or pressure plate to check the transmission centerline alignment. Good thing I did. I will have to replace the dowel pins with offset dowel pins. It was .050 total off. Divided by two (center) and I need the .025 (closest .021) pins.

If you do not do this procedure, you can have "pilot bearing wear, main shaft bearing wear, difficulty in shifting, and in extreme cases breakage of transmission gears and cases".

The bell housing is a big problem. The dowel pins in the block are very tight. I called Keith Craft and he told me that he had a kit and I did not need to remove those dowels. Got the kit, it includes longer dowel pins and a larger washer that welds to the outside of the bell housing. Just drill out the original holes to a larger size, move the bell housing in to place, and weld on the washers. Will call Keith again tomorrow and verify that I DO need to pull those pins.

I was stewing about how I was going to get those dowel pins out without hurting that aluminum block. So I designed a dowel pin puller out of a piece of pipe, a grade 8 bolt, nut and two washers. With a little welding it worked great. Anybody that has a Shelby/Aluminum block take note. They were in there tight.

Engine has been set in the engine bay. Headers have not been installed yet. I just wanted to see the fit. You can see by some of the red circles in the photos that I have some clearance issues. Anybody installing the shock tower bracing and a FE engine will have to do what I am going to do. I need to grind down the upper areas to clear the header bolts. VERY TIGHT!

Well, I said I thought I had a wire in the wrong place. Turns out you have to program the Alarm before things will work. :eek Seems that the Bluetooth for the Phone to hook up through the radio has a similar requirement for pairing. ha ha

So I finished all the wiring except for: the radiator fans, alarm wiring to flash the lights, PW & P door lock have yet to be installed (but the wiring is in the doors), wiring up the amp (all wires have been run to where it will be) and that's it. Never been so sore in my life. I'm an old codger.

I rewired some of the front lights because I did not like how I wired them previously. Lights are not on all the time now, only when the switch is pulled.

EFI is completely wired. It also controls the electronic Fuel pump (6 sec prime, then waits for start). MSD coil and ignition is installed and wired. And if you think that is a big gap between the coil and ingnition, that is because something goes between them - the air intake from the drivers side fender.

I lifted the engine about 1" and moved it back about 1/2". That cleared all but one header bolt. It cleared the R&P problem.

Figured out the problem with the trans. Out it comes and a new smaller piston will be used in the Hydraulic throwout bearing.

Started working on the doors. I am replacing most everything, so this will be a NEW car when I get finsihed. I installed the power door locks, new door latches, strikers, lock rods, door lock pull ups, and chrome rings, interior door handle shafts, door handles, and door courtesy lights. Missing one door handle, and the anti rattle piece that goes on the driver side door handle to latch rod, that screws to the inside of the door and keeps the rod from rattling. I don't know if they sell that piece.

Many pieces in tight places like above the fender wells inside the rear fenders. It takes a lot of time to do it right. But should be worth the effort.

Thanks! I love the 67 Mustang Body style and any year Boss!

I have done all the work myself except for final body work & paint, and the engine build. I have done some of both before, but I chose to use professionals. The shop I went to was the body shop. I had it shipped 250 miles to one guy that restores Shelby Mustangs. I knew he would do it correctly. And he did!

The rest I have done by myself. I have had the car since Mar 06. Been at the body shop from Nov 1st 2006 till Apr 20th 2007.

30 days since I got it back from the body shop and I may start the engine tonight!

A friend of mine told me the same thing. "Just use the wind lace around the doors and small pieces in front and back around the glass seams, take your time, use carpet type spray on glue and you can do it."

Thanks for the vote of confidence. :lateral:

I own an Income Tax business like H&R. I have 8 offices. Timed the car to go to the body shop while I had to work. It worked out perfect. Got it back April 20th. A month later and the engine is in.

Hoping to have it on the road in less than 30 days. Anybody know of any good meets/runs to attend? How about the Power Tour? I think it starts before I will be totally finished.

Well, I finished the entire drive train. After taking the trans out, bellhousing off, clutch and pressure plate off, putting the bellhousing and trans back on, and checking for end play (it was fine). Remove the trans and bell housing, putting the clutch and pressure plate back in, bell housing back on, fixing the hydraulic throwout bearing (shorter length piston for clearance) and re-installing the trans, driveshaft, exhaust, etc. It is DONE!!!!!

If I had a radiator I would be driving it around the block (without a windshield) tonight.

Clutch is strong but not too strong. You would get a small workout in Houston traffic, but it is not as bad as the one Super Snake I tried. It pumped up immediately, and stays firm even after sitting.

I have question about drive shaft length. My drive shaft goes in to the TKO 600 about 6". I have to pull it back about 2"- 2 1/4" to connect it to the pumpkin leaving about 3 3/4"-4" in the trans. Is that enough, or is that not enough?

I installed the headliner. A good suggestion is to use the old windlace, cut it in to small 2-3" pieces and use them as a clamp while you glue it in place. Then use the new windlace around the doors when you glue. Do the doors first, then use all the small pieces around the front & back glass area when you glue the headliner there. Leave them on until you install the glass.

I installed the chrome pieces around the door today. You can spend HOURS on this stuff to get it right. After that I installed the chrome piece that holds the weatherstrip. I used some 3M strip calk on the backside where the old cork gasket used to be. Just added two small runners to the chrome piece and then screwed it in place.

I cut a piece out of the gas tank filler tube at the tank to make it more level, and not want to spit back at you when filling. Permanently mounted the wiring from the EFI to the passenger fender relays in wire loom.

But the big story is I installed the rear inside quarter panels (3 times each to get them right with the roll bar cut out), the rear seats, seat belts, carpet, and console. Carpet is not all the way finished, but is about 80% done (mostly cut, in place, etc. )

I'm not worried about the rear seat wrinkle right now. After it gets out in the heat, if that doesn't do it I might spray a little water on in and rub it in!

Like my Mustang rear seat belts? Also, look at the trim moulding where the roll bar meets the rear inside quarter panels.

I finished the carpet. I have never been so glad that all the back breaking work is about done. I installed the center console for good. Installed the shifter. I had to bolt the bottom shifter bolt from underneath the console (when it was loose). The extra insulation and new carpet makes the installation process a PITA! Kick panels and door sill plates (stainless steel) are done. Well, I have one to go. Seat floor brackets are bolted down. Seat belt bolts were put in before the carpet. It sure makes it easier to find those holes.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/CarpetFinished.jpg

I even installed the overhead console w/map lights! Installing those screws before the headliner made the process a little easier to find.

A big hole here, I will reinforce it with a piece of angle. More pictures when I get the upper bracket to the radiator welded on. The lower radiator mounts are just 2 pins ( 1/2" ) with a rubber insulator:

Well, I took her around the block. I have three issues.

1.) Transmission has got to come back out. The input shaft must be hitting the crank, which makes it act like the clutch is not releasing all the way.

2.) Something is rubbing like a rotor against a caliper, or the like. I was so tired I did not lift it to inspect, but will get to it tomorrow.

3.) Running way rich. Now comes the tuning with the laptop.

No fluid leaks, no brake problems, no other issues at this time. Still got to get the alignment, cold air intake and A/C charge.

Hood still off till I get the EFI/Dyno guy over here. I Changed the plugs because they were fouled.

Not many new parts are left to put on.

I am thinking about making an upper shroud for the attachment to the upper grill. Since I moved the radiator forward 1 1/2" , the old hood latch bracket wont clear the condenser. I have to make something. Either something small 8-12" wide, all the way to the hood pin brackets, or something that goes fender to fender and under the top grill slat.

I had to install an extra water temp sending unit. If I tapped in to the EFI water temp probe, it may have caused a LOW temp reading by dividing the signal. So I tee'd the manifold, and added the dash gauge water temp sending unit.

I also built an aluminum water shield (2 sides only) for the under-fender 12" long conical air filter.

Got a lot done today. Took a day off to regroup. Those damn gremlins keep sneaking up and screwing with everything.

For instance, the drive shaft delivered to me was too short. Well I ordered, and received from UP (a few weeks late) a longer driveshaft. This fixed one problem but created another. The front universal knuckle started hitting the H Pipe. Damn it!!!

OK I removed the H pipe and had it cut 3/4" on both sides to give me a little room. I also clocked the EFI sensor a little clockwise because it was getting very close to the frame. This allowed me to lift the transmission a little more, hopefully taking care of the shifting problem. We will see in the next few days:

Got the front end aligned today also. I stayed with they guy doing the alignment, and boy am I glad. He really didn't know that you could rotate the plate to move the LCA out for the negative camber.

The figures from TCP:
Camber 0- ½ degree neg
Castor 2 ½-3 pos
Toe 1/16” -1/8” In

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/FrontEndAligned.jpg

But We got it done. Front and rear end. It was only out a little, but a little sure makes a big difference in the way it drives. Now I got to lift the rear a little more. There are adjustments on the UP rear Coilover system to allow for this:

Black is very difficult on painters. Shows every flaw. It was buffed and clayed. When you touch the paint it is smooth as silk. It is not a 100 point paint job, but it is, IMHO, at least a 95.

Going to some local shows while I finish all the little things. I don't have any plans to go to any nationals. I might go to the Unique Performance Fest in Dallas on Oct 20th.

Got the cold air intake installed.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l259/rsowell_2006/ColdAirIntakeFinished2.jpg

Now for the good news/bad news. Good news is I found out why it is running so rough. When I adjusted the valves, I adjusted only the right (passenger) bank, because I was getting a little lifter noise. But I still noticed a roughness in the idle, and something was just not right. So I pulled a compression check. Cyl 6, 7 & 8 were low. #1 was at 120# after 3 revs. Cyl #8 got up to 95# after 5 compression strokes. I pulled the valve cover, turned it over to the heel on the cam, and backed off the tensioner. The valve MOVED UP. It was not seating properly. SO I backed it off a little more. NO SPRING. Goes loose immediately. Adjusted it back down, up, down. Adjusts exactly like a solid lifter. YEP, collapsed lifter. Checked 6, 7, & 8. All collapsed. 5 is OK. CRRAPPPPPPP

Would that be a good name for this project?

This is a rookie mistake by the engine builder. I am a little PO'd. I'm gonna see what they are planning to do. $36k for engine and you would expect perfection!$%*^$
