View Full Version : A part that SOMEBODY needs to make...

I was driving my Camaro, shortly before it was sent back to the bodyshop, and noticed a glaring area where it needed improvement.
The cowl hood.
90% of us don't run the factory cowl vents on the hood since we aren't running the cowl-induction air cleaner. This means we are stuck with an undinished area of the hood that we have to stare at when driving down the road.
Somebody needs to make a part to close off this area, some sort of wire mesh with a frame that will bolt to the factory locations. It would really do a lot to clean up this area and give a finished look.
Thoughts?
A laser cut piece of stainless? A more elaborate solution? Who will solve this common first gen problem.
I know I would buy one :)

A buddy of mine fabricated his own mesh screen on his 'glass 2x4 hood and it looks great...gives it that '60's "competition" look.
I still run the factory cowl flapper so mine's intact...but I do know what you mean. That is the first thing you see as soon as you're behind the wheel.

Hey Steve, that's on our list with my buddy to do. He is doing a water jet ti item for this that will be plated. I don't know what color yet, but he has a pattern already picked out. I will not have it before Pleasanton though.

Cool, just a simple cover that would bolt onto the hood.. one that allows for airflow. Heck, they could be painted whatever color.
Have a picture? Seem redundant for everyone to design thier own. Someone need to curn out a hundred or so, mark them up a notch, and sell them.

Ill see. The water jet guy who is the employee of my buddy just got his face rebroken due to getting it broken in a bike accident, and he's the one doing my parts. Ill ask him when he gets his mouth unwired. He knows what I want and I'm not going to bug him about it right now. Or maybe I should, it's not like he can talk back to me or anything. :P

On Dad's '68, we cut out a sheet of aluminum to close off the cowl hood. Without it sealed, the hot under-hood air comes out there and goes right into the cowl vents and into the interior when the blower fan is on... really sucks if you don't have A/C.

Regarding the CF Hoods:
Do they need/ have any structure on the underside of them like the metal ones, or are they good to go without it?
Does anyone know if the gel coat could be tinted when they are made. It would look really cool to see a Red Hood that showed the CF underneath. Maybe just a Tint if nothing else.
Thanks,
Ty

The hood needs no support. This lends extra room for maybe a blower or such :)
I'm sure the gel could be tinted. You could also just shoot the hood in a tinted or candied clear.

I think on the Red Witch they just painted the hood on top to match the car, and left the underneath in carbon fiber.

I am sure Marquez desing or Ring borthers could do it. Billet frame and stainless mess would be a hot ticket. Something similar than RingBros have for mustangs allready

Under hood air comes out the cowl hole? You sure about that? Would debunk the whole cowl induction theory then...

I would have to believe that hot air would come out of there unless the air cleaner is sealed to the hood in which case the whole cowl induction theory holds water.

With low pressure at the base of the window, I would think that the evacuation of hot air from under the hood might even be a better use for it rather than using it to pull air to the engine. There are plenty of ways of piping outside/cooler air to the engine.
Also, at speed relieving air from under the hood would help keep the car low to the ground.
Is this wrong??:_paranoid

The base of the windshield is a high pressure area. However, to determine the flow of air you'd have to check and compare the mean underhood pressure vs pressure at the base of the windshield/cowl inlet; the air will flow across the pressure gradient from high to low. You'd have to get some pressure transducers or rig up a quick manometer setup to check the pressures. Or, go budget-style and simply tape a piece of streamer tape or paper to the back of the cowl hood and go for a drive and note if it sucks into the hood or flaps outwards.
With the cowl hood not sealed to a carb pan (as in the original installation) I don't know what the direction of flow will be-- someone do an experiment and find out, I want to know. I'm cowl-less or I would do it myself.

Under hood air comes out the cowl hole? You sure about that? Would debunk the whole cowl induction theory then...The carb/air cleaner was not sealed off to the hood on Dad's car. If they were sealed off, it would work as designed to pull in cool air from high-pressure area at base of windshield.
The heat coming out of it, and into the interior is much more noticeable at low-speeds... the engine fan is pulling air in, and the hot air (which rises) escapes through the unsealed cowl hood.
Sealing off the carb would solve the problem, but Dad is cheap, and doesn't care much about performance, so we just covered the opening so it would be more comfortable to drive.

He is a very good fabrication guy. He is a Lateral-G member by the name of coolwelder62. Give him a call at his shop 785-594-7481
Scott is also the guy who performed ALL the fabrication work on Mizfits 69 Camaro that is now for sale at $185,000 unfinished.

Thanks Shannon, I really need to find time to order two sets of auto pedals. Feel free to call me if you get a chance.
Thanks everyone for your interest. We will have the part done in a week or so. We are turned off by the available slotted or mesh "plate" designs. That plate solution, in particular, appears to block off about 60 percent of the air opening. And mesh seems redundant since we all use air filters. The mesh doesn't seal out the environment either.
Instead, we are coming up with a finished panel that retains the full function of the opening. It will be something completely different and three dimensional--sure to blow everyone's mind. We want to do something that LOOKS as though it works similar to this:

Yeah...Frank and Jimmy are hardcore racers. Those guys will instinctively cut a car in half if they think it'll gain 'em a tenth. Good for one-off designs. Bad for production parts. It's my job to herd them in the right direction like CNC cattle. It's all part of the process. Watch it again and you'll see how their like: "...we'll just move it up some."
You'll be able to install the final design without even removing the hood.

We decided against mesh. Mesh won't keep the rain and snow out, but if you imagine moving all of those pieces of wire together, they will cut down on airflow-probably by 30%. We've all been doing without mesh for 30-plus years. Our goal was to dress up the area without cutting down on airflow. We can black anodize them. Anodizing is pricey on Long Island. Figure on $80-$85 in black. Maybe less. Maybe more.
